Angelina Jolie is still in Pakistan, doing press on behalf of the UNHCR and meeting with refugees and Pakistani officials and NGOs. Today, Jolie did something she rarely does in her capacity as UNHCR goodwill ambassador – she gave a press conference on site, and she entered the hot-button political arena in a big way. According to mulitple news sources who covered Jolie’s press conference, she outright condemned the Florida preacher’s threat/promise to burn a Koran (Quran or Qu’ran) on the anniversary of September 11th. Pastor Terry Jones, of the Dove World Outreach Center, has become a national and international figure after making the threat to burn the Koran, earning condemnations from Pres. Obama, Secretary of State Clinton, General Petraeus and General Odierno, all of whom argue that the act could and will endanger the lives of soldiers and further alienate Muslims around the world.
Angelina Jolie on Wednesday condemned a Florida church’s threat to burn copies of the Muslim holy book to mark the ninth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks. The 35-year-old actress spoke out against the proposed burning during a trip to Pakistan to raise awareness about the floods that have devastated the largely Muslim country over the last six weeks. She visited in her capacity as a goodwill ambassador for the U.N.’s refugee agency.
Jolie’s criticism echoed that of top U.S. officials, who have described the church’s plan as a disgraceful act and have even warned that it could endanger U.S. troops in Afghanistan and Americans worldwide.
“I have hardly the words that somebody would do that to somebody’s religious book,” Jolie told reporters in Islamabad after visiting refugees camps in northwestern Pakistan — one of the areas of the country hit hardest by the floods.
The Christian minister organizing the Quran burning, Pastor Terry Jones, has said he plans to go ahead in spite of concerns. He is part of the Dove World Outreach Center, a tiny, evangelical Christian church in Gainesville, Florida, with an anti-Islam philosophy.
The issue has not gotten much attention in Pakistan, where officials and residents have been trying to cope with the devastation caused by floods that first hit the country at the end of July following extremely heavy monsoon rains. The floodwaters have killed more than 1,700 people and have affected over 18 million others.“I was shocked especially by how high the floodwaters went,” said Jolie, who wore a long dress and covered her hair with a black scarf in keeping with local Muslim custom. “In some of the people’s houses, it was nine feet (three meters) high.”
U.N. officials have expressed hope that Jolie’s visit would help spark the fundraising campaign to help Pakistan, which has stalled in recent days. The U.N. issued an appeal for $460 million in emergency funds on Aug. 11, but only $294 million, or 64 percent, has been received so far even though it is one of the worst natural disasters in recent years.
“There’s lots of speculation about why this one has not gotten the attention it deserves,” Jolie said. “Even all of the wonderful coverage … is not getting the response that usually it’s able to get.”

That’s interesting that Angelina came out against so strongly – usually, she moderates her comments on some of the more controversial subjects, and I’ve always suspected she was a lot more politically conservative than most people believe. But I agree with her comments, as I hope most people will.

Burning the flag & the Bible is ok but burning the Koran is not? What a world!
What’s sad is that Pastor Jones keeps insisting that Muslims burn Bibles – but a Muslim would never burn a Bible or a Torah, since we consider them to be holy scripture from God as much as the Quran.
Love what Angelina’s wearing! Beautiful Afghani embroidery on the shirt.
Wow that so-called pastor is a creep. How can you call yourself religious and have no respect for anyone else’s book of worship. Good for Angie for calling him out. As for Angie’s politics I have a feeling she isn’t a libertarian or a liberal but one of those independents who votes for odd people whose name you’ve never heard of. I love what she is doing and I hope they can get the extra 200 million they need to help with relief.
This entire Islamo-drama is getting out of control. I wish the news stations would not give this church any attention, I don’t think any of the protesters from either side at the Ground Zero location are interested in solving the problem in anyway…people just feel like they want to fight these days.
wow she looks terrible. She had the time to put on eyeliner and lip gloss but still looks scary.
Condemnation is what this pastor deserves. As a supposed religious leader of his small Florida flock he is suppose to lift up his flock not lead them in hate. He needs to re-read his bible. I hold the bible sacred, I can’t believe someone would do this to anothers sacred book.
I don’t agree with Glenn Bleck and find him a threat to this country, shall I organize a burning of the Book of Mormon? Of course, not.
This pastor his lost sight of what it means to glorify God.
good for her. I think what that “preacher” wants to do is disgusting.
the number of Muslims who are terrorists are just a small percentage of the Muslim population.
there was a great piece on The Onion about just that.
(and I’m still laughing about the Darth Maul reference…)
EDIT: to jen…it depends on what you mean by “OK”. legal? yes, it’s legal to burn the Koran. I may not like it when someone burns a bible, American flag or Koran, but that person has the right to do so.
so, legally, it’s “OK”, but morally? not in my opinion. and that’s what’s great about the US. people have the right to do those things, and we have the right to not like it.
I’m glad AJ spoke up against this!
I live and go to school in Gainesville, and I can personally vouch for the fact that this pastor is crazy. This tiny church (about 30 members) has done many ridiculous and offensive things over the 3 years I’ve been here, and this time they’re just going above and beyond. It’s just a terrible situation.
Burning the flag, the bible, the Quran, books in general is not alright.
Yea what a douche that guy is. There will never peace if people keep doing dumb sh*t back and forth to one another. Its ridiculous. Keep up the good work Angie. Angelina was the number 2 most searched person yesterday according to Yahoo and was the number one person trending. To me people are seeing why she is there and hearing what she has to say and will reach out and help. 😀
Exactly where is it okay to burn flags and Bibles? We, as civil human beings, are expected to respect all flags and all forms of religious material. Americans, it’s always just about you! No respect about the much bigger picture of what burning them will consequently cause. And instead of pointing fingers about what ‘they’ have done try and live by a positive example yourselves. Have you learned nothing from your history? Every decade you seem to find a new culture to alienate then eventually go too far, this step is going to push you over the edge once again.
Poster 1- Are you a Christian? If you are take another look at the New Testament. Matt 22:37-40; Mark 12:28-31
Whether you are or you aren’t how about the very simple parental lesson- Two wrongs don’t make a right.
Good for her! I’m glad she spoke so unequivocally on this issue. I cannot believe that someone as dumb as this pastor is allowed to tie his own shoelaces, let alone head up an organization of any kind. Why can he not understand that to carry out this burning will only hurt the country he professes to love so much???
Does he really think that acting like a radical Christian will stop radical Muslims from attacking the U.S? Does he think it will teach them to fear him? Unless he’s willing to sacrifice to the same extent that these people who feel they have nothing left to lose, he needs to shut up, sit his @$$ down, and let the adults handle things.
/soapbox rant.
I think I’m a terrible person because I can’t stop laughing when I see pictures of Jolie in that outfit
Oh, I’d like to retract my American comment! I see a lot more positive responses then I was expecting and obviously just picked a few out of many. Which is not fair and exactly what I was outraged about in the first place. Sorry. I tried deleting it but couldn’t.
@jen: Burning the flag & the Bible is ok but burning the Koran is not? What a world!
headdesk. ok. *congress* has established that it cannot make burning flags/bibles/etc illegal without impinging on the people’s first amendment rights. congress won’t be sending anyone to jail for burning the koran either. various commentators have said that burning the koran is ass. various commentators have also said that burning the flag/bible/other stuff is ass. so far, everyone except you is being consistent in their stance.
or, in short form, your comment is like saying ‘omg prostitution is legal in nevada but my mom doesn’t want me to go out wearing this top. what a world!’
(why the hell is constitutional law my hot-button issue???)
Religion does more harm than good to peace and goodwill toward men, Im I wrong or isnt religion suppose to be about tolerance and love, and loving your neighboro,, This country is suppose to be built on freedom of religion..Yeah,,
@ Praise St. Angie!-Yes I was referring to the legality, and not commenting on the wisdom of it. I’m just tired of the hypocrisy.
Bina – Exactly. I’m tired of hearing “You’d burn a bible in a heartbeat.” I used to get laughed at when I was younger because I couldn’t bring myself to throw away The Watchtower booklets. I couldn’t even imagine burning a bible, even if it isn’t my holy book. To imagine the mind of someone who would? Aye. Too much hate in this world…
A “church” with 30 members … doing something over-the-top stupid and ridiculous … is getting press. And lots of it.
We are only giving them what they want. Attention.

How shallow, You really dont seem mature enough to grasp the gravity of what is going on in OUR world today. So very sad on you part. I pray you do not have any children, that you are bringing up in the world
Sadly this is a no win situation.
If the US Gov’t steps in to stop the preacher from burning the Qur’an on the grounds of “security”, it pretty much proves his point that extremists are impacting internal US policy.
If the preacher goes ahead, extremisits now have yet another excuse to hate the west (although to be fair, offending a bunch of people who seem to believe it’s their birth right to go through life unoffended is an exceptionally easy thing to do).
Condemnation is what this pastor deserves. As a supposed religious leader of his small Florida flock he is suppose to lift up his flock not lead them in hate. He needs to re-read his bible. I hold the bible sacred, I can’t believe someone would do this to anothers sacred book.

Sadly, not enough people in our world think as you do.
“How shallow, You really dont seem mature enough to grasp the gravity of what is going on in OUR world today.”
Oh god, shut up, I work on Capitol Hill. I most likely know more about what’s going on in the world than you could ever even dream of.
This is a site called “Celebitchy.” Not “Thoughts on Humanitarian Crises and Responses by Third World Governments and Aid Agencies.” I am commenting accordingly.
We are giving to much attention to something that doesnt deserve attention.
Actually, BrendaWalsh is a troll who just got banned. She was commenting under multiple names.
I think she could have used a bit more powder myself and softer makeup. 😉
This guy is a kookoo.
It worries me (for all the world) that we give zealots a platform of any kind. This guy reminds me of the guys who have led their followers to death (Jim Jones & the guy who made his people wear Gap clothing and die on bunkbeds)…their messages are never remembered, just the way they died.
Where has common decency gone?
is it a must to wear hijab in pakistan?
We shouldn’t be giving this “preacher” idiot any attention. I wouldn’t be surprised if he has ties to the white supremacists and the KKK if he’s that over the top racist. If he does burn the Quran like he’s threatening to, then his ass should be thrown in jail. Unfortunately he has the right to speak his mind and I hope the authorities are monitoring his activities. People like this guy can be very dangerous.
@Parisienne:She is not really that covered up, I mean my Catholic grandmother, covers up more when she goes to Church. I don’t think its law to wear a hijab in Pakistan, I think she is wearing it out of respect to her surroundings, which is commendable. I have some Muslim friends who don’t wear it at all, its Ramadan at the moment, so I think more women might be wearing it then they otherwise would.
Angie needs to shut her pie hole and stop trying to be a saviour, which she is obviously not.
denise: If you would gladly take her place to speak for the plight of millions of people, I would love to see you sitting there instead of her.
@denise: Angie needs to shut her pie hole
mmm, whatever angie’s using that mouth for, it ain’t pie. i hart her, but omg THIN.
@ Samantha
While her charity work is admirable, this is one topic should should steer clear from. Furthermore I do not mindlessly follow celebrities on whatever cause they may be endorsing at the moment.
LOl @ Bizzy
True.
I don’t agree with how thin Angelina Jolie is ( I have always stated that), but to insult her by saying she is scary looking? Please. So nasty, negative, jealous and untrue. She is trying to get the word out about this crisis. She could be doing nothing right?
@33
Angie doesn’t take orders from perfect strangers on the internet about what she can say or not as a UN employee, what she can do or not within her own professional mission besides, …
She is 35 and is perfectly able to give her opinion on that subject.
While I question her character, her humanitarian side is hard to deny.
denise:

Oh Jen, dont you have a joint to smoke, and a tanning appointment to attend to.. smh
“I do not mindlessly follow celebrities on whatever cause they may be endorsing at the moment.”
Hilarious. Millions of people are homeless, starving and dying of thirst, not to mention all the illnesses that are surely to kick in, and you say this? Aye. Mindlessly following celebrities is one thing. Supporting ANYONE who is willing to try and help humans in a horrible situation is another. Hate Angelina all you want, but until you are willing to do what she is doing, I find your insulting her comical. Whatever your stance be on the world, I find it sad that you would have nothing better to say in regards to someone at least attempting to make the world a little better.
@ Sam
A celebrity is simply doing something that any person is capable of doing. Yet we bow at their feet like they are a saviour. Maybe if we all became pro active and got off our arses we’d make positive change.
I’m not Angelina bashing, I’m just not an obsessed loon.
I know that what that church is doing is legal, but I wish that the police/authority in that town would/could set up a blockade around that church to prevent the crush of international media from filming the incident and the fire dept could have one truck on hand to douse the “church” and “pastor” the moment they saw a whiff of smoke.
This “pastor” is using extreme hate to generate publicity for himself. This event would not be occurring if everyone in the world agreed to turn their backs and ignore it. Just like the “pastor” that protests at the funeral services of slain soldiers. Stop the attention, they go away.
Without the video of the offensive action being viraled around the world, this disturbed man and his followers would be left to fade into obscurity where they belong.
No one in the government is saying that these people ‘can’t’ burn the Quran, however people of all political stripes are asking that they rethink doing so as it may put our fellow citizens and in particular out soldiers overseas in even more danger. That is a very fair request, but only a request. And I would hope that this pastor and his flock mull over the possibility that their actions could potentially cause harm. Not to mention, and this is only my personal opinion, I disagree with burning religious books (all books for that matter)in general, and I hope that they do not do this, but it is our right to do so if we see fit… no matter how stupid, petty, and truely pointless a choice it may be.
Burning the flag & the Bible is ok but burning the Koran is not? What a world!
********************
These are all wrong, maybe legal under the First Amendment, but still wrong and totally against the religious tolerance that this country is meant to stand for.
The problem with men like him is they are not men of God and harm Christianity, which when followed according to the teachings of Jesus is actually a loving religion. This so called pastor is nothing more than a false prophet. Beware the false prophets.
I have always felt that people who were overzealous with it came to the religion they practiced were not crazy, they just did not seem bright enough to form opinions of their own. This preacher just confirmed it for me. Whether you don’t like a religion or it followers, that is your right, to disrespect it is something entirely different. When did calling yourself a ‘Christian’ give you to right to be mean and volitile?
@denise –
I am merely pointing out that if someone, ANYONE, regardless of their social status is doing something for the benefit of mankind, I am not about to knock it. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that people tend to listen a little more when a celebrity says something, rather than if I went walking down the street in my abaya and hijab preaching about it. That doesn’t mean I don’t, I am still active and doing what I can. But I can appreciate it when someone who has a little more pull with the world uses their pull to do good. I can’t fault anyone for doing it, and I don’t care if they have an ulterior motive behind it. I would much rather just appreciate the actions, rather than be cynical about the intentions. Every little bit helps.
I don’t know anyone who HASN’T condemned what this lunatic wants to do. It was all over every news channel this morning, and every response I’ve seen has been disgust (including my own).
Is this preacher also going to burn every gas pump of Florida because of BP’s oil disaster?
I am an atheist but I have a huge respect for religions and gods, I don’t like their fan(atic)s, ‘tho.
@ Sam
If you bothered to read my comments instead of getting on the defensive, you would have noticed that I said her charity work is admirable. But she’s entering a whole new ball game by addressing this issue. Nothing anyone will say will heal US Muslim relations, unfortunately.
@denise: “Angie needs to shut her pie hole and stop trying to be a saviour, which she is obviously not.”
This is the first comment you made on this thread. I will admit, I did not think to go searching through all other threads on celebitchy to see how you respond to every story. However that was your first comment here, so I hope you can understand that from that point of view and having nothing else to go off of, my first impression was not that of a person who admires what she is doing.
Denise wrote: “Nothing anyone will say will heal US Muslim relations, unfortunately.”
There are millions of ‘US Muslims’ they are just as patriotic as any other US citizen, be they christian, Buddhist, Jewish, or agnostic. I assume you meant relations in the middle east.
Dear Florida Pastor. Jesus says in the BIBLE that you hold so sacred, that the second most important commandment is to love your NEIGHBOR. Which you are definitely NOT doing by burning the book that THEY hold to be sacred.
@olivia: I must be a terrible person too, because the death’s head garb makes me laugh too. I just can’t seem to help myself.
@ Taylor
The United States relationship with Muslim nations. i/e Iraq, Iran, etc…..
@Crash2GO2: neither of you is a terrible
person :-), the pastor on the other hand well..
I won’t call him a terrible person but
I think what he wants to do is terrible.
I think that something like the struggle to show images of the prophet Mohammed or speak freely about Islam in film is a valid struggle against radicalism and a valid fight for freedom of speech.
But burning Korans? That’s just totes Westboro Baptist Church-y, yo.
If you want to watch this douche get pwned by the Silver Fox, DO. It’s good viewing.

Way to put our troops in danger, gramps.
I’m much rather listen to the Secretary of State who actaully, you know, knows what is going on than this chucklehead who made a garbled statement “I have hardly the words that somebody would do that to somebody’s religious book” giving her “I’m so concerned look” through perfectly rimmed eyes and her pouty look with perfectly glossed lips.
I’ll get my quotes and news from people who care less about their appearance and more about the issues at hand. Some quotes from people who actually matter:
Secretary of State Hilary Clinton: “I am heartened by the clear, unequivocal condemnation of this disrespectful, disgraceful act that has come from American religious leaders of all faiths.”
General Petraus: “…images of the burning of a Quran would undoubtedly be used by extremists in Afghanistan — and around the world — to inflame public opinion and incite violence…It could endanger troops and it could endanger the overall effort…It is precisely the kind of action the Taliban uses and could cause significant problems. Not just here, but everywhere in the world, we are engaged with the Islamic community.”
Lt. Gen. William Caldwell (commander of NATO training Mission in Afghanistan)-“It’s their Holy Book, so when somebody says that they’re going to destroy that and cause a desecration to something that’s very sacred to them, it’s already stirred up a lot of discussion and concern amongst the people…We very much feel that this could jeopardize the safety of our men and women that are serving over here”.
And there’s more if you look up the story and follow it aside from some celebrity’s garbled statement.
Has anyone asked JEN’s opinion on the subject?
And at the person who said, “Burning the flag & the Bible is ok but burning the Koran is not? What a world!”
Oh. My. God. Show me one person who isn’t a supporter of terror or a lunatic radical who thinks it’s okay to burn a Bible or an American flag. I wish staunch conservatives would stop acting like the “liberal media” thinks these things are okay. Please, show me the video where Katie Couric or Anderson Cooper has gone on TV saying, “Check out this video of radicals in Saudi Arabia burning Bibles! Isn’t that AWESOME?! SCREW AMERICA!”
Both are wrong, wrong, wrong.
@lucy2: Check out some of the posts on Huff Po about this. Some people are defending this lunatic’s actions on the specious grounds of First Amendment rights and saying he shouldn’t “give in to terrorism” by backing down.
The Gainesville fire department has denied him a permit to burn anything on the church grounds, and the church’s insurance company has canceled their insurance policy. Yet this nutcase is still going to go ahead and burn a pile of Qurans to make his statement. I hope the police get there before sets the first one afire and throws his ass in jail.
Kudos to Angie for speaking out against this. I wish every celeb in Hollywood would follow her example.
“I wish every celeb in Hollywood would follow her example”
To what point and purpose? This is a small group of idiots in a po-dunk town who are getting WAY too much attention as it is.
Who cares what the celebrities think? What kind of credentials do celebrities have that make their opinions matter so much than others that they should all speak out against this?
@ Olivia…what’s so funny? The fact that she cares about these people and is sincere in her cause to help in any way she can or the fact that you’re insensitive to other people’s hardships?
@jen1; people like you are what is wrong with this world.
I’m a muslim and I have 100% respect for the bible, the thora and the quran.
Muslims believe in the three books and in all prophets. We believe in Jesus and Abraham just as much as christians and jews do.
And I love and admire Angelina for having the courage to speak out.
“Who cares what the celebrities think? What kind of credentials do celebrities have that make their opinions matter so much than others that they should all speak out against this? ”
Unfortunately to people like Love Angelina and Cheyenne, what their celebrities think and do is what dictates their thinking and actions. Even if they have to make up what their celebrities are thinking and doing half the time.
Thank you for posting those statements.

The Hamm Is My Dream Man:
I agree!! They are paid actors for crying out loud and this qualifies their political views more so than the rest of ours?
@Hamm: Whether or not you like the fact, the fact is that celebrities have a lot of influence the rest of us don’t.
I don’t think anything is going to stop this nutcase at this point. He’s gone too far and he’s too committed. If he backed down now the republicans would accuse him of kow-towing to terrorism.
I just hope nobody ends up getting killed over this lunatic’s actions. If you think it can’t happen, you’d better think again.
“Who cares what the celebrities think? What kind of credentials do celebrities have that make their opinions matter so much than others that they should all speak out against this?”
Who cares what celebrities think? I guess WE all do right? We’re all on here commenting on the latest Brang outing so…….
I suppose the comment would be more impactful if we were on a CNN thread and not a celebrity gossip website 🙂
Just saying…
@parisienne and @girafe – nope, it’s not law at all to wear hijab or burqa or chador in Pakistan. We’re free to wear what we like. In conservative areas of the country, women wear them much more than in the liberal cities. It’s a social/cultural thing, not so much a religious one.
Man, I wish she would shut the hell up. Here she is swanning around like the dark side of Mother Teresa. What has she ever done or thought that is of any importance? Great image, though.

Celebrities are for entertaining; politicians for lying. Let’s not confuse the two.
@ Super Sleuth
Good one!

I wish people would not equate buring a flag (a secular gov item) with burning a religious book. Flag burning is about standing up to the government and speaking up as an equal voter, burning a bible/Quran etc. is very different, that is about disrespecting someones faith… unless those people equate government to a faith, in which case I can only assume that those same people would never say anything negative about an elected gov official, especially their president, and this is my opinion only, you can not claim that disrespecting the flag as a symbol of the US is somehow wrong but dissing the POTUS who is also a symbol of the US is ok. In my opinion, as they are both political symbols in a ‘free’ society they can both be burned in effigy.
Someone once said that we have a separation of church and state, not only to keep the grasp of the church from the government but to keep the grasp of the government from the church. They need to be separate, to protect both the law and the faith.
Burning a flag is saying I don’t like your policies, and I am standing up for my political freedom; burning a bible or a Quran is saying your faith and your ‘god’ is wrong or bad. One is a debate based in politics and the other is hurtful to anothers faith/soul, healthy debate is a wonderful thing but ad hominem attacks tend to backfire in pretty nasty ways.
Just my opinion, and no offense intended.
I’m American and Muslim and I look at it two ways. Firstly I don’t expect much from his type. His. Threats don’t phase me one bit. I know that there are good level headed Christians and I won’t allow him to taint my view point on most Christians. Secondly the Quran is a book but we focus more on recitation of it than the actual book. We are against the destruction of it but the Quran started as memorized passages by 100s of the first Muslims. This loons plans will not destroy the words. It’s his first amendment right to be an idiot.
what he is doing is sick.
i hate the way that this man (and others) thinks that religion is to blame for all the evil in the world.
it is not the over 1 billion muslims, who are only trying to live in peace, that are to blame but is in fact the handful of psychos that are using faith cover to kill people. this is applied to all religions and this is coming from a catholic girl currently wearing a star of david.
Bina…Samantha Thank you both!!!! Exactly……Muslims revere Jesus, Moses, Abraham, as well as the scriptures Injeel, Torah, religious pages that were revealed to them. Muslims condemn all devlish acts of terror as much or even more than their associating themselves with us and our religion. They are not of us and we are not of them. Religious terrorism is separate from the religion itself. Just as African Americans, Catholics etc. were/are able to differentiate KKK acts, done in the name of the Bible, from the religion itself, so should others be able to see we are a peaceful faith. Please know that some of what is “quoted” from the Quran is taken out of context and should be read within its context and realized that during the time there was even more persecution than there is now for choosing to worship one Creator over graven images and Muslims were being killed and driven out of Mecca/Medina. Some of the warring mentioned is in regard to that time. Verse after verse we are told to seek peace, to show restriant even against an aggressor, to an extent. To be careful about retribution and to know there is a justice other than wordly justice. We do not believe that only people calling themselves Muslims will gain Paradise. Our book clearly states any good man or woman seeking right and forbidding wrong will be blessed. These terrorists are bound for hell regardless of their claim of affilliation with us.
I would like to say that while I totally and 100% agree that these people can do this, I don’t personally think they should. I have the legal right to walk up to my neighbor and say (as it is an opinion) ‘Your kids are horrid little monsters that pester my dogs and your icky, grabby husband has hit on me and EVERY other woman on the block’ but while I CAN say that, SHOULD I? Hell no. Her family may be suspect, but she is a very nice person and deserves respect; just because a few members of her family suck doesn’t mean she goes down with the ship.
What has she done to her face esp her nose?? She has had to much done and looks like a wax doll. What a shame. Another beauty sucked into over use of botox, fillers & plastic surgery at to young. She used to be so pretty-sad.
i am an unabashed bibliophile; i love books, i work with them all day, i read them constantly, i belong to 3 book clubs and i flip out if i see people dog-ear their pages. if i could eat books i would. BUT…it is legal to burn books in this country. and i support that right, although the idea of burning a book -any book- makes me ill. this asswipe “preacher” has the right to burn books, but i just want to know why? what does he hope to accomplish? why would anyone want to burn a book? all i can say is the nazis did it, and that should tell you something about the character of those who would follow suit.
i also i wish the media would stop giving this fucktard coverage.
You know who else burned books they didn’t agree with?
Nazis.
Original Kate,
I couldn’t agree more. There are books that I detest, I find the messages (and the author) disgusting, but the books still should not be burned. We can always learn from books, even if we learn that the message of the book is revolting and the person who wrote it is a pig. At least we now know what kind of person we do not want to emulate. Do I personally want to scrub the racist/bigoted/sexist images and words from my mind? Hell YES!! Should that book be burned? Hell NO!! As they say you have to kiss a ton of toads before you find your prince… or princess.
Oh, thank GOD St. Angelina has *finally* weighed in on the subject!
I’m sure the gen pop and politicians and law enforcement could never have made heads or tales of it without an attention-desperate, high school dropout ignoramus, druggie kid-collector’s 2¢.
I’m w/Denise– AJ, shut yer piehole.
PS She looks ridICulous in that get-up. Had time to shadow and line her eyes and slap on the lip gloss, though, I see.
kitten: I don’t come here to read about what celebrities think about. I don’t care what they think about political matters or natural disasters or things they don’t know about because generally they are uneducated nitwits. I come here to read gossip like whether or not Paris Hilton was smuggling cocaine in her vadge.
It would make no sense for me to comment on people taking celebrities seriously on CNN because the people who read that and then comment probably don’t take celebrities seriously either.
Unlike here where people are saying, “God Bless blah blah blah” for making a statement. No world leader is going to listen to an uneducated actress. They listen to each other and to their generals.
Entertainers should entertain and try to sell me stuff I don’t need, not talk about world matters like it’ll influence anyone important.
Celebrities do not influence my decisions-no one should take their cues from someone who gets paid to play pretend all day.
This pastor’s actions are utterly despicable, and its a shame we are giving him the attention he craves. However, if we are going to discuss this, we should acknowledge that this same type of thing happens to bibles as well. I posted a link earlier from an Asian news source that commented on the burning of bibles and all around general trashing of a church in Pakistan:
http://www.speroforum.com/a/17283/Muslims-burn-Bible-in-Pakistan
Also, last summer in Punjab, a community of Christians had their church and homes burned by the local extremist muslims. A family was burned alive.
I think it is the decent thing to do to condemn all religiously motivated harrassment and murders, wherever they happen.
@ benven: i agree those actions are horrible and should be punished. but we are talking about the US, where we (supposedly) have freedom of religion and to think, read and watch whatever we wish. pakistan doesn’t make claims to be a democracy. we are a democracy, which is what makes this pastor’s actions so insulting to so many americans. he is behaving just like the governments he despises, an irony i’m sure he and his followers do not see.
I think my comment is valid. She’s in Pakistan, condemning the call to burn Korans in the U.S., while in Pakistan, bibles and churches are burned. Sorry you don’t agree. I do agree with your last sentence.
From wiki:
Pakistan is a democratic parliamentary federal republic with Islam as the state religion.
he religious breakdown of the country is as follows:
Islam 173,000,000 (the majority are Sunni Muslims, 5-20% are Shi’a and 2.3% are Ahmadis).
Hinduism 3,200,000
Christianity 2,800,000
Sikhs Around 20,000
I agree with her. My husband and I were talking about this after seeing this on the news last night. The preacher is an idiot.
Also I love what she is wearing, she looks gorgeous.
Why does this man get so much coverage? Obviously he is an idiot, yet the media is allowing him to turn his little book burning into an international event.
Burning books is for people who don’t have the intellectual capacity to critically examine and debate ideas.
@ kaiser, re: your last paragraph: you’re spot on. btw, people in the entertainment industry (where I work) generally believe that Angie is considerably more conservative than Brad, politically speaking.
The pastor sounds like he wants to be a martyr of some kind. It would be kind of funny if he was arrested for not having a burning permit, but I’m sure he’d just play it off as people violating his freedom of speech.
It would be nice if he just concentrated on following the bible instead of worrying what holy texts others are following.
“She’s in Pakistan, condemning the call to burn Korans in the U.S., while in Pakistan, bibles and churches are burned. Sorry you don’t agree.”
@benven, agree with what? agree that bibles are being burned, or that angie is in pakistan? once again, your post is nonsensical and fragmented. do i agree that religious harassment is wrong? yes, and i said so in my previous post.
I don’t see why we should care about what one dumb-nut and his short list of mindless sheep do as long as it’s not illegal. Why are the media giving him such a forum? We’ll always have insignificant nutjobs running around, threatening to do stupid stuff, why doesn’t the media go after each one. Personally this is the media’s fault for bringing an extremely small-scale insignificant event and giving it a large-scale international forum. Do you think anyone would’ve known about this otherwise? Why does anyone care what he does? He’s not important, he’s not even worth an opinion.
Why are so many commenting on her make up. Come on, if you were going to be on television or have your picture taken for mass distribution, you wouldn’t wear make up? Give me a break.
Benven-She did not get asked about churches and Bibles being burned in Pakistan, did she?
She was asked a question and provided a simple answer.
She was there to speak about the floods anyway.
“Wherever they burn books they will also, in the end, burn human beings”. Heinrich Heine.
@Benven I live in Pakistan. Nobody burns Bibles here. We respect the holy books of Christians and Jews because they came from God, the same source of the Quran. The incident you quote with the church being burned was staged by the same extremists who have killed Muslims by the thousands over the last several years, thanks to the occupation of Afghanistan and the bombing of my country by US Predator drones. It is not something that happens every day and nobody endorses it. In fact, burning a Bible is illegal under the Pakistani Blasphemy Act and if caught, the culprits would be tried in court and sent to jail.
Theyve already burnt a bunch of humans. And burning books is not at all demonstrably causative of autos da fey; Ill agree its a slippery slope, but so is religion!
I have to say this. As much as I hate religious fundamentalism, and well, the vast majority of organized religion per se, I 100% support this total dick of a preacher’s right to burn a book, regardless of what it is. To me, Islam and Judeochristianity are just one big nasty fart joke and I don’t really distinguish between them, so it’s not about hating on Allah, or loving Jesus.
But come on, if we decide no one can burn a book as a means of protest, what else is for the chop?? I WANT to be able to have a bonfire full of bibles and qurans in my front yard on Halloween if I bloody well feel like it, and I don’t want some ethics police douche with a siren on his head busting down my door and arresting me for it.
Support the freedom of speech we currently enjoy, while it’s still ours. Have the maturity to see that it wont always take the form you personally enjoy.
Fundamentalists are a great way to gauge freedom- if they’d ban it as soon as acquiring power, then it’s an important freedom 🙂 !!
I think burning the quran in the current climate is ethically reprehensible, but A- christianity is not renowned for it’s informed toleration (read the bible folks) so B- this says far more about the poop stew in this guy’s cranium than anything else. Pity him! But don’t try to stop him. Rise above the urge.
I have as little respect for the radical Christian as I do for the radical Muslim, or whatever religion. The operative word there is “religion” because it’s as far from the basis of faith as you can get. Inciting violence is against the law…constitutional law. You have freedom of religion, yes; you DO NOT have the freedom to incite anger and violence by attacking another. This pastor is in for a rude awakening when his “Book of Life” is read; he will find he is in the proverbial hot seat..and for much longer than it took to burn that Koran/Quran. He needs to invest in million block heat screen and lots, lots, LOTS, of bottled water.
\
What.an.ass. He’s completely missed the message of Christianity, and other faiths that espouse honoring your fellow human being, and placing love and care above all, treating others the way you would wish to be treated.
Hey….BBQ of the Bible at his church next week. Bring the s’mores.
Only NOT. Not everyone is an ignoramus.
Hopefully the predictions of uptik in attacks from that won’t happen but who knows?
Hope he and his can sleep at night. ‘course..he’s probably related/affliated with the Westboro bunch.
Gawd, what a fucking mess this world has “evolved” into…
Maybe I should come back as a dog…humans can really suck sometimes.
By burning the Qu’ran, that minister is saying that all Muslims are responsible for what happened on 9/11, which is entirely wrong. It sickens me.
“I think my comment is valid. She’s in Pakistan, condemning the call to burn Korans in the U.S., while in Pakistan, bibles and churches are burned.”
Two wrongs don’t make a right BenVen. That’s also a “lemming” mentality. Instead, rise above, lead by example.
If this dickwad wants to burn a Qu’ran let him wrap in the American flag first because he might as well be lighting the First Amendment on fire.
Of course I think this is awful, and this guy is insane.
Now. I would like to address someone who made a comment about bible burning not occurring elsewhere. Do you read the News? In response to the threat of the Koran burning, there were Afghan civilians in the streets burning the American flag and chanting ‘death to the christians.’ Is this anymore justified than threatening to burn Korans? No, of course it is not.
There is ugliness on both sides, sadly. Let’s not forget that this is what war does to people, and differences, and that what is MOST problematic is how very fragile their faith in the good of many Americans is, AND vice versa (the faith of many Americans in the good of many Muslims). It is so easy to point fingers, but we all need to realize this is not going to go away my maintaining an uneasy truce that is so fragile that one wacky dude with a ‘church’ of thirty ignites this kind of response from so many over there; you will be endangering out troops lives, they will be recruiting by the thousands, burning flags, chanting of death, et cetera.
And before someone says something about the flag burning being a lie, no. This is not propaganda, I am furious at the media for the propaganda they have spread, especially on this topic and the extreme Islamaphobia that has occurred as a result. This is from a factual account of the situation in Afghanistan in an article I read on CNN yesterday, as well as many other valid News sources. Unfortunately, I am not sure that I am allowed to link it.
Also, have we forgotten the thousands of Muslims across the globe cheering and chanting anti-American hate speech on 9/11?
And NO, This is not an anti-muslim speech. I do not hate Muslims and I am not even American, not that that is exactly relevant. This is a factual re-account of the REALITY of the seething hatred of these two religions have for one another in general, and of the bahviours of the countries that represent said religions. It is not one sided, and not as small and ‘concentrated’ in little tiny circles of extremists as many of us like to make it seem, perhaps to feel better ourselves, the situation as a whole, I don’t know. This is saying, we need to stop pretending America is the only country with a plethora of bigoted overzealous civilians who fall in stride with the extremists. Maybe if we acknowledged that we could stop the issue from being vague enough for said extremists to distort. And you Americans are the worst, the first to take the blame and blame one another. I don’t get it! Stop abusing one another, first of all, it makes you look like a weak nation from the outside and I personally know that’s untrue.
But here’s another interesting thing. Is it just me that finds it telling that it would be so easy to alienate them and send them right into the grips of Muslim Extremists ? It almost seems inevitable anyway, if this is indication of anything, and it is. I hate what this guy is doing, I hate what some of the Americans are saying about the Mosque (community center) and innocent Muslims are suffering within the States for the actions they played no part in. I hate all of that. But the ugliness is not all on the Americans side. Not even by half, and we need to stop blaming them, as easy as it is. You have to look this beast in the mouth, or it is going to eat you.
The whole thing is not going to end well, and I tell you now, it won’t be just because the Americans don’t like or trust or care for Muslims who are not extremists and in effect alienate them. It is well understood by un-bigoted Muslims that there are many more Americans who respect their beliefs and their right to coexist peacefully. But not all believe this, and how quickly they will turn is proof enough of that.
No, this will not fade away, and no uneasy truce, no placating or appeasing or ‘respecting’ those who are inevitably anti-american or anti-muslim will hold it off forever. I only hope that the many Muslims that could not be so easily swayed do not take it to heart when this becomes much, much uglier. Because where else can it go from here….
@Angel: thanks for saying this, well done
i think in all over the world that guise so become very famous in the world so they come in ( ISLAM ) is religion and its very good to we love and respect that one god so he is the one at all over the world and bishak he is ALLAH and he doesnt have any share and i promise that all of christen and sick or others religion that the ISLAM is winner at end of the leave of peoples zinda bad ISLAM:)
