Above is the new poster for Love and Other Drugs, the film that will be coming out shortly, this fall sometime. Jake Gyllenhaal plays a pharmaceutical rep/salesman who ends up promoting the best-selling drug in the world: Viagra. Anne Hathaway plays the girl Jake meets and falls for, even though she’s intense and his career is taking off and he could bone every nurse he wanted. The trailer came out last month, and I watched it, expecting to hate it. I didn’t. And now I’m ashamed:
Okay, here’s my question: does anyone else remember the stories about Jake and Anne hating each other? They previously worked on Brokeback Mountain together, and I have strong memories of Jake insinuating that he thought Anne was a major a–hole. Am I hallucinating? If they did (do) hate each other, then I guess their acting is a lot better than you would think – they do seem to have some kind of chemistry together, and it’s good to see them both in these kinds of roles. Will this just be another interchangeable rom-com? Eh. There is something icky about it though – they both trying to seem so wholesome.

He has gotten sooooo sexy hot. He used to be kind of goofy cute, but he is truly hot now. I hardly noticed her watching the trailer … but upon rewatching it to check her out, she is definitely gorgeous but he outshines her by far. They’re not believable together though.

I seem to remember that too, Kaiser. But then again, Natalie Wood and Richard Beymer hated (and I mean despised) each other and West Side Story didn’t suffer at all.

Saw the preview. It creeped me out. Not seeing it. I have a hard time seeing either one of them in a romantic role. Jake, because, well, I still think he is gay, and Anne, because, well, there is just something off about her.
I never heard anything about them hating each other on Brokeback but I’d like to hear about it now. Any links?
I’m always on the fence about whether she’s pretty or not, she moves back and forth across the line from still photo to still photo. However once in motion she undeniably has “it”.
I don’t think that she has sex appeal, although she is very pretty.
Hmm, well I guess I am the lone poster who actually wants to see this movie. Of course I will wait until it’s on HBO, but I will watch it.
I like both Jake and Anne. I find her to be a good actress, and I really liked her in Rachel Getting Married and The Devil Wears Prada. I liked her more than Kate H in The Bride Wars. I have love for Jake since the the Donnie Darko days. Bubble Boy was great, The Good Girl and I adored him in Jarhead!
Laverne & Shirley hated each other too, but they made it work!

The promo for this movie is so weird. They keep selling it as some fluffy rom-com, even though Anne’s character has a terrible disease (not a spoiler).
Also, I just don’t like Jake much as a romantic lead.
I have to confess this is the kind of rom-com I enjoy but I wouldn’t pay to see it I’ll wait for cable.

The movie doens’t look bad, the trailer made me smile a couple of times, althought I’m not into rom-coms enough to enjoy them from the beginning to the end.
What is with you and your thing with celebrities appearing “wholesome?” This seems to come up a lot with Anne Hathaway and Jennifer Garner! So they aren’t crazy like other celebs… that’s a bad thing?

how is she not pretty? she has soft feminine features and a great smile as well as great hair. she looks natural. people are wayyyy tooooo picky these days. it’s because of women who put other women down for the most picky reasons that we are so stereotypically and unrealistically portrayed and represented in magazines and media. we say men are mean or sexist when they say we should be a certain weight or when they push their own thoughts of what ‘pretty’ is down our throats, but women are way worse and do it to each other when we should stand behind each others differences and flaws because that’s what makes each of us uniquely beautiful. society will never follow if we can’t even set a good example ourselves for how to treat women, and we are women!
It looks really odd, of course I will see it just for Jake.
#29 – I wouldn’t describe her features as ‘soft and feminine’. Everything on her face looks really… big. She has BIG eyes, BIG lips and, yes it’s nice, but a BIG nose. All fitted on a small face.

Anne’s features are more overwhelming than soft and feminine. She’s one of those actresses who is as much disliked as she is liked. I’m not hugely keen on her, mainly because I think she overacts her roles. It’s almost like she’s trying too hard to prove something, or maybe it’s because I don’t think she’s as good of an actress as most people say she is.

Anne herself has said she thinks her features are too big for her small head, so it just goes to show that we are all too hard on ourselves already. No need for others to pile it on as well. She really is quite beautiful.

I don’t like Hathaway and am heartened to hear that others feel the same — I thought it was just me. There’s just something about her… her ears? nose? or is it her “acting”?? Whatever it is, it rubs me the wrong way… blech.

Right on. I think she’s lovely in an elegant, classic way. I get it when women don’t like plastic, artificial women, but when people are hating on someone who is very pretty in a natural way, I just feel like it’s jealousy. Or stupidity…I don’t see the need to knock women down like that.
So surprised that people find Jake hot. I think he is totally gay, which makes it awkward (tho not impossible) to be a romantic lead. He looks like a clown to me.

The thing about Anne Hathaway, and the character that she plays is that she is neither charming nor endearing, nor particularly attractive. She just does not have the movie star factor that makes you want to watch and adore someone. Anne could be a great character actress, she was at her prime in Rachel Getting Married. However, in this film, to convince the audience that Jake Gyllenhaal has given up womanizing, she needs to really charm, and she just does not. Jake is charming, but its hard to see the attraction to her on his part.
Loved her in Alice In Wonderland as the White Queen.

As far as Jake goes, he’s a wonderful actor but he’s just not the kind of guy I’m normally attracted to. I’ll probably see this after it comes out on DVD.

I am torn as well. I like Anne Hathaway as an actress and she gets really good roles and does well with them. I don’t know what that whole scandal was about and how deeply she was/was not involved, but it went all the way to Rome and the pope (he was a high level financial con man). So, I’ll admit it, that colors my perception of her. Other actresses should get roles who are talented (Michelle Williams, for example) who haven’t been involved in an international financial scandal.

I thought Love & Other Drugs was a romcom but I was disappointed as the movie was depressing. The only good thing was that Jake was an eyecandy. -Riza Hollister
