50 Cent tries to defend his anti-gay tweets, makes it worse

50 Cent really needs to stop tweeting. Last month, he tweeted a photo of two men in suits running away from a mob along with the message “Perez Hilton calld me douchebag so I had my homie shoot up a gay wedding. wasnt his but still made me feel better.” He deleted the photo and tweet but never commented on the controversy even after GLAAD called him out for it. Then last week, in what seems like a misguided attempt to recommend that more men perform oral sex on their women, he tweeted “If you a man and your over 25 and you don’t eat pu**y just kill your self damn it. The world will be a better place. Lol.” There are plenty of men over 25 who don’t do that, but 50 says he wasn’t referring to gay men and their “choice” of an “alternative lifestyle.”

The other night I made a joke about a blow job. My male followers enjoyed it. So I then went on to joke about women receiving the same. Some how they turned a simple joke about oral sex into a anti gay statement. I have nothing against people who choose and alternative lifestyle in fact iv publicly stated my mom loved women. It funny how people think negative statements are news worthy but positive statements are not worthy of coverage. Access holly wood for got to put laughing out loud lol that was at the end of that statement.

I guess this fool doesn’t have a management team that can convince him to stop tweeting and showing the world what a self-involved homophobic ass he is. His latest tweets are about how “cool” he is and while they seem tongue in cheek with the “Lol” at the end and all, they probably aren’t. “You know if you don’t like me something might be wrong with you. I just looked in the mirror and I’m cool man. I just checked again I’m cool for real man. I got all this swag I should sell some and get some more money. Lol” Yes, 50 has a lot of money. His net worth is estimated at $440 million dollars. It just goes to show that money can’t buy sense, class or tact. He needs a hobby other than tweeting.

I don’t think this particular tactless comment was intended to be a statement against gays. However he’s gone there in the past on other comments, so he will always have that filter on him. He should choose his words more carefully….or at least have someone check his tweets. He’s made himself a target as a homophobe.

  2. Stacy says:

50 Cent is a complete and utter douche.

I didn’t think it was possible to have a combination of ignorance, lack of education, bigotry and lack of class in a more ugly package of a human being.

On top of that, he can’t even redeem himself by at least having made a hit since 2003.

    Pathetic.

  3. Shannon says:

His homophobic comments might be understandable if he was new to the game. Part of macho black culture, especially in the ghetto, is aggressive homophobia.

But 50 Cent isn’t new to the game. He’s been in LA/Hollywood for years, where gay people make up a greater proportion of the entertainment industry than in any other industry anywhere else in the world. He talks to gay people daily, he works with them, he’s friends with them. He has no excuse for saying this crap and hurting the people he knows.

  4. Riley says:

If Twitter has done one thing for our society, it has exposed how insensitive, careless, and f**ed up most celebrities truly are (is that under 140 characters?)

  5. Po says:

Shannon, I would just like to point out that homophobia is not just a part of macho black culture but it is also a part of macho white, latino, and every other races culture. I understand if you want to speak about his obvious ignorance, by the way I think he has major issues with the fact that his mother was bisexual and he really needs to work that out, but agressive homophobia didn’t start or end in the ghetto or black culture. I just wanted to point that out.

  6. jc126 says:

The first part was awful about shooting up a gay wedding. The second part, I doubt he was even thinking about gays at all, just saying it to other (straight) guys about performing oral. I don’t think every comment has to include a disclaimer that one means no offense to gays.

  7. LOVE ANGELINA says:

I agree with number 1. I didn’t think that comment had anything to do with gay males. I didn’t know about his previous comments, but I am tired of all the hate.

  8. georgiagrl says:

He may be intelligent for surrounding himself with smart business people (accounts, lawyers, management ect) but he is an uneducated bigot. I cant stand these kind of small minded, nasty comments. He’s more known for stupid tweets than music these days.
    Keep em to yourself moron.

  9. Mia says:

His latest tweet may not have been intended towards gays, but it never the less reflects what an all-around hateful, ignorant douche he is. He obviously felt the need to make the tweet as an after-thought or attempt at damage control for the undoubtedly misogynistic, sexist bile that came out of his mouth re: the earlier blow-job tweet.
He is beyond ridiculous. There are absolutely no words to describe this clown.
And yes, of course putting “Lol” at the end of any ignorant statement just makes everything ok, doesn’t it? (eye-roll).

  10. cutie says:

@ Shannon: So I take it you know alot about black culture and life in the ghetto? Cause if you don’t you just made an ignorant biased comment, just like 50.

  11. Kaboom says:

Imagine the gay white man doing that kind of cracks against black folks …

  12. Shay says:

All celebrities should stop tweeting. Tweeting only brings out the douche in people, in general. It is beyond narcissistic.
In Australia, swimmer Stephanie Rice, lost her Jaguar sponsorship because she tweeted something moronic about a losing football team, using ‘fags’ in the tweet. It was seen by a militant gay actor former rugby player who needs to be expose other sports stars for fame, and that was it for her.
Twitter is the worst social network tool for tools, closely followed by Facebook.

  13. Po says:

I think twitter is good in a way. For the celebrities who actually handle their own twitter accounts it lets the consumer know exactly who they are giving their money to. If they like what the person says, great. If not they can keep their $10 for the movie ticket or CD, because they can see that the person is an asshole.

  14. eja102 says:

I didn’t find them to be offensive. I don’t much care what random people on the internet have to say, celebrity or not.
Unfortunately, people are assholes, and you can’t make people change. I think the focus should be on teaching that what other people say, especially randoms, doesn’t really matter.
You really can only change your reaction.

  15. Jen says:

Ugh. I can’t get past his misspellings and bad grammar.

  16. mello says:

This is what happens when u hit the lottery in rap music….Shitty cent made his money off the clout of Eminem and Dr. Dre and now his music sucks..so just like a prick with no true talent does is create controversy to stay relevant…Very Sad…I don’t believe this scumbag is worth 400 mill, but who cares….Shitty cent buy an island far far away and disappear….Please

  17. Amy says:

If you go on 50 Cent’s twitter, all he does is make derogatory tweets about women. Here and there he’ll make the occasional gay tweet but most of it is really demeaning to women. I’m not really a feminist but I really wish he would stop tweeting and constantly refer to women as sexual objects.

Also this other guy started an “English Fifty Cent” twitter and started “translating” 50 Cent’s tweets into proper English (most of his tweets are incomprehensible to begin with). I have never laughed so hard at something I’ve read online in my life!

I dont think Shannon meant to be racist, she was pointing out that the particular culture 50 came from has elements of extreme homophobia. She was not talking about other cultures, so there is no need to include, “ALSO FOUND EVERYWHERE ELSE IN SOCIETY,” because thats not that she was talking about. She was talking specifically about 50. Plus, she’s not wrong – been to the ghetto lately? The particular one in my town is EXCEEDINGLY racist and homophobic.

  19. Ron says:

50 cent is worth 400 some million bucks, however he made most of it from his investment in Vitamin Water not music. I just don’t understand why he can’t keep his mouth shut and enjoy it. He had his moment and that moment is gone.

  20. hmm(the original) says:

First of all, I thought he was talking about straight men and people misinterpreted what he said. Secondly, I’m a little sick of people making the argument that black people are more homophobic than every other group. In Montana (not a lot of black folks there) the Republican party platform makes homosexuality illegal and that’s just one example. You can find examples in every group in this country that has elements of homophobia and I just wish we could stop looking to blame everything on “ghetto” folks.

  21. Mary Jane says:

    “Shitty cent…”
That is TOO funny, mello! I’ve got to remembre that one!

  22. Faye says:

    I’m with Jen.

Also, some dudes don’t go down, and some ladies don’t go down. I don’t see how this has any bearing on their character whatsoever. If I could go back in time to when he was about to post this tweet and give him some advice, I would tell him he should probably change it to, “I enjoy cunnilingus and you should too. It’s nice. If you don’t, well, I’m not sure I understand but it’s ok, that’s just how you roll.” I didn’t count the characters so that might be too long. But that would be my adivce.

  23. Shannon says:

Whoa, you guys are calling ME ignorant? I’m a sociology major, would you like me to cite some peer-reviewed articles to back this up? I would be happy to oblige.

Discussing black culture, even the negative aspects of it, is not inherently racist. Thanks for your hypersensitive knee-jerk reaction on that, but attempting to say all cultures are the same is the racist way to go about it.

Please don’t whitewash cultural differences based on race, because they exist. And yes, I happen to know a lot about ghettos. The ghetto-jail cycle was created as the next tool of white oppression after first slavery, then Jim Crow laws were deemed illegal. Please see “Black Picket Fences: Privilege and Peril among the Black Middle Class”, Mary Patillo-McCoy for more information on colorblind racism and white privilege.

hmm- I NEVER said that black people are more homophobic than white people. I said that part of black macho culture in the ghetto is aggressive homophobia. This has been qualified by hundreds, if not thousands, of empirical studies using rigorous sociological standards. I’m not blaming everything on “ghetto” folks, in fact I said it would be UNDERSTANDABLE if someone from that background used homophobia as proof of masculinity. Just as it would be UNDERSTANDABLE if someone from the deep south born in the 1920’s held views that we would consider racist. It doesn’t mean it would be RIGHT, it just means that people are a product of their environment. Pretending that we all come from the same white middle class upbringing is naive and does a disservice to people who do not fit into that mold. Please see “Racism without Racists: Color-Blind Racism and the Persistence of Racial Inequality in the United States”, Eduardo Bonilla-Silva for more information on how slavery, Jim Crow Laws, and the ghetto are interconnected in addition to some interesting information on red-lining in the 21st century.

You are totally correct that other segments of our population practice aggressive homophobia, but that homophobia is a different “brand” than the kind I’m talking about. They’re trying to institutionalize the homophobia via the government, which is different than homophobia as a cultural norm.

And finally, some direct quotes from articles:

“The terrain Black Gay Men navigate in the quest for self and social identity, is, to say the least, hostile. What disturbs – no – enrages me is not so much the obstacles set before me by whites, which history has conditioned me to expect, but the traps and pitfalls planted by my so-called brothers, who because of the same history should know better. I am a Black F*****, if I believe what TV, movies, and rap music say of me. Because of my sexuality, I cannot be Black. A strong, proud, ‘Afro-centric’ Black man is resolutely heterosexual, not even bisexual. Hence I remain a Negro. My sexual difference is considered of no value; indeed, it’s a testament to weakness, passivity, the absence of real guts — balls. Hence I remain a sissy, punk, f*****. I cannot be a Black Gay Man because, by the tenets of Black Macho, Black Gay Man is a triple negation.” — Black Macho Revisited: Reflections of a Snap! Queen, by Marlon T. Riggs

“Black churches in the USA constitute a significant source of the homophobia that pervades black communities. This theologically-driven homophobia is reinforced by the anti-homosexual rhetoric of black nationalism. Drawing on a variety of sources, this paper discusses the sources of homophobia within black communities, and its impact upon self-esteem, social relationships and physical health.” — Homophobia, Hypermasculinity and the US Black Church, by Elijah G. Ward in the Journal of Culture, Health, and Sexuality.

I think I’m just going to do the journal-citing from the get-go in the future, to avoid people getting their panties in a twist and saying “how DARE you” for making general points about aspects of society that are easily verifiable by a quick Google Scholar search. Since apparently that is asking too much of CB readers to do on their own. (Alright that was probably overly-bitchy, but I’m so used to this kind of thing being a given and moving on to more nuanced conversations that it is really shocking to me when people assume that stating something like this is racist and they refuse to even consider the point beyond that)

  24. eja102 says:

^ prime example of my theory.

  25. wunderkindt says:

Tweets de-mystify celebrity and make it less managable, marketable, and therefore less profitable.

Image is everything. So when the ‘stars’ reveal themselves to be bigoted-or just plain stupid like Lohan and Love-they lose thier aura of glamour. A lot less people will want to buy into the fanatasy product.

  26. slam says:

I dont know why people are always after celebs. Its just a joke and all of a sudden it turns to something else. The world today approves gay, so be it but people should stop talking celebs like they are jeolousy.

  27. redlips says:

He needs to come on out of the closet!

HIV/AIDS is up 75% with African American women. The reason…..black men being on the DL and then having sex with their wives or girlfriends. It is a fact…..google it.

  28. HotPockets says:

    Since it was brought up..

Any sociology major would know better than to use the term “race” to discuss humans. Genetically speaking, there is no such thing as different races in humans, there is only the human race; race is defined as being a sub-species, which does not exist in humans.

  29. DetRiotgirl says:

@Amy thank you so much for posting that link! I’ve been having some medical problems lately and have been feeling really depressed about it. Plus, it’s raining here today. So, I was all prepared to lay down and make place cards for my very own private pity party for the rest of the afternoon (i.e. me, cat #1, cat #2…) when I clicked your link. Thank God I did! That thing really got me to laugh out loud for the first time all day. Thanks to you, I’ve actually gotten myself together enough to change out of my sweat pants! Amy for the win!

PS my name is Amy too! So, that pretty much triples your totally awesome awesomeness in my opinion!

  30. Shannon says:

HotPockets, just because there is no genetic basis for race does not mean it simply goes *poof* and no longer exists. Race is a category by which humans in certain communities sort themselves, and the effects of that sorting are obvious.

Are you saying that the effects of racism are now invalid just because there is no DNA coding for racial differences?

You are attempting to discuss the biological idea of race, which has been debunked. I am talking about the sociological definition of race, which is *very* different – sociologists view race as a social construct (that is, something created by humans and human society) rather than a biological phenomenon.

“Race, although it does not exist in the world in any ontologically objective way, it still is real in society (as opposed to nature). Race is a social construction that has real consequences and effects. These effects, consequences and the notion that race is ontologically subjective is epistemologically objective. We know that race is something that is real in society, and that it shapes the way we see ourselves and others. Many rightly claim that race is conceptually unstable. However, this should not lead us to skepticism about race, i.e. that we cannot have any objective knowledge about race. We can know what race is and how it works regardless of the various shifts in meaning that have occurred through history and occur geographically.”

I think 50 should be careful about his wording only because of the fact he is a celebrity and has an obligation to the public almost equal to a politician in some aspects. I could care less about 50 cent’s opinions on sexual preferences of young men but in his defense, if you don’t want to here it then don’t read it.

  32. Trashaddict says:

“I’m cool for real, man”. 440 mil net worth. He’s nowhere to be found on the list of top celebrity charitable givers. So I think I’ve found a new hobby for you 50cent! Get out the freaking checkbook!

  33. bunny wabba says:

    wow 50. what a douche.
