If someone told you that you would die unless you stopped doing a certain behavior, how long would it take you to give that behavior up? Well, if you’re Amy Winehouse, you don’t give it up. Because nobody tells Amy what to do: not her record company, not her parents, not her doctor, not even Blake Incarcerated. Amy was released from the hospital, where she was diagnosed with emphysema – pretty shocking for a 24-year-old – on Monday. She was immediately photographed smoking a cigarette.
Amy Winehouse was photographed smoking in London on Monday after her father Mitch revealed she is suffering from emphysema.
“The doctors have told her if she goes back to smoking drugs it won’t just ruin her voice, it will kill her,” Mitch told UK newspaper the Daily Mail.
Winehouse, 24, was taken to the hospital last week for tests after she fainted at home in London.
“With smoking the crack cocaine and the cigarettes her lungs are all gunked up,” Mitch said. “There are nodules around the chest and dark marks. She’s got 70 percent lung capacity.”
If she doesn’t get treatment, she could need an oxygen mask to breathe, Mitch told the Daily Mail.
“She’s only 24 yet she has the lungs of an 80-year-old,” David H. Nielson, a thoracic surgeon in San Antonio, tells Usmagazine.com. “She’s going to get fatigued [on stage] and have to rest with supplemental oxygen. It will dramatically effect her career.”
“To have this type of emphysema already will likely shorten her life to about 50 years of age,” says Nielson.
Meanwhile, Amy’s publicist (who the hell would want that job) denies the reports that the singer has emphysema, saying that she only has the beginning traces of the disease and that Amy’s father “misspoke.”
A discrepancy regarding the health of Amy Winehouse arose Monday after the Grammy-winning singer’s father said she had early stage emphysema brought on by smoking crack cocaine and cigarettes.
A publicist for Winehouse later said he had misspoken “out of his concern for her.”
“She is not diagnosed with full-blown emphysema, but instead has early signs of what could lead to emphysema,” Tracey Miller, her U.S.-based representative, told The Associated Press on Monday.
This makes a little more sense than her having full blown emphysema- but either way, wouldn’t it be a good idea for Amy to quit smoking and go to rehab? The girl is either stone cold stupid or she’s got a death wish. At this point, she is becoming less of a tragic figure and more of a cartoon character mess.
Amy Winehouse is shown smoking on 5/12/08, thanks to WENN. The photos of Amy Smoking after her release can be found on Gossip Girls.
Yep. Definitely a death wish.
She is an addict and she does not care. Its not different than being suicidal. Maybe she doesnt see the value in living. Maybe she is not impressed with the world. Maybe…she is just insane. But every generation has famous people like this. Thankfully her hair is too disgusting for any teens to really want to follow her down the same path. Its her life and her talent to waste and man she is making the most of that option
Give her a bleedin’ chance. Course she needs to stop but this is Amy we’re talking about here and it’s not going to happen overnight. And tobacco is one of the hardest things to quit.
In all fairness you can’t tell on that GG picture that the cigarette is lit or not. I mean, it probably is, but maybe she’s just trying to deal with the psychological craving before she gives up the nicotine? Yeah, I know… doubtful 🙂
I have been smocking heavily for 10 years. Even when I had Pharyngitis, I would still be smoking despite it was hard to breath and it would make the cure slower. It’s true tabacco is a hard drug to quit. I remember trying to quit many times. You get obsessive about it, angry and depressed at the same time. I was feeling that I wanted to itch and scratch myself all day long but couldn’t do it.
The cigarettes in both pictures are lit.
It is hard to give up an addiction. Even if they say it will kill you – because after all, it can’t happen to YOU! None of the bad stuff can ever happen to you…until it does.
I just want to take her in and wash her face and cut her hair in a pixie cut and feed her lots of chicken & dumplings and get her some new clothes and make her forget about Blaaaake. She has SO MUCH wrong with her. Maybe that’s why she doesn’t care about the smoking. Just to look at all the things you have to fix about yourself would be exhausting.
Syko: they are lit in the images shown on this post on the 5/12 but you can’t really tell on the Gossip Girls one. I’m just sayin’ you know 😉
Kurt Vonnegut once said that smoking is the only socially acceptable form of suicide.
Syko, I wanna chicken soup her up, too. I’ve been a fan of her music since Frank, she is RIDICULOUSLY talented. I hope she can get well.
MSat is right, she’s just becoming cartoonish now. My sympathy is quickly depleting, as well as my support for her music. Why should her fans care more than she does?
Wino, Wino, Wino . . . I really want to give her the benefit of the doubt (as I would for anyone I knew who was fucked up and suicidal), but she needs to get her shit together, right quick. If she’s truly this depressed, she oughta see a shrink – the rehab can come later after she’s realized she’s worth saving.
She doesn’t care, as long as she gets to smoke more crack. If she wants to die that’s her problem.
Chamalla, I don’t even care about her talent, and am not particularly a fan – I just wanna help her because cartoonish as she is, she’s still human. I was touched by those pictures of her greeting an unexpected fan knocking at the door, and her genuine pleasure in seeing the fan. She’s still got some humanity going on.
Tabby, I apologize, I’m reading at work, not the best place to concentrate on forbidden internet links, and I didn’t even click on the link because for some reason I thought the lower picture was the one from the Gossip Girl site. I did check it out and it’s hard to tell, but it would be my guess that it’s lit.
She’s weak. Sorry she has all the resources and does nothing. Cigs are not as hard to quit as people think: it’s mostly psychological. After the first 3 days the nicotine is out of your system. You just need to know your behavioral triggers and also avoid booze as that is a major trigger for most people. People just hear how hard it is supposed to be to quit. It is but not as insurmountable as people say. Anyone can quit you need to want to. Simple as that.
It’s really not that hard to quit smoking.
They should put her on Wellbutrin.
it completely kills your desire to smoke.
@ Barbara: wrong. It is horrid to quit smoking. And Wellbutrin doesn’t work for everyone. When I tried it, I turned into a crazed creature who had anger tantrums in public places and broke doors slamming them. There are still some places I can never go back to, because of the Wellbutrin. Not to mention the insomnia and constipation it also caused.
Chantix didn’t help. The patch and gum and all that stuff are, in my mind, simply trading one addiction for another. Ditto the inhaler, the lozenges, all the things that contain a little spurt of nicotine for you.
The only way I could quit was cold turkey. But it was very very difficult.
That’s it.
I’m no longer praying to St. Rita for her.
Somebody, anybody, Please put this chick out of her misery and get her some crack!
Like daddy doesn’t know what is up?
This train wreck of a woman is heading for an early grave-why not watch it go down right here on the celebitchy!
It’s like watching an animal that is gnawing its leg off to escape a trap. It’s tragic, but there isn’t really anything you can do because the animal will attack you if you try to remove the trap.
Sad!
She’s puffing like a train engine in this photo!

This is what she ACTUALLY has: http://abcnews.go.com/Health/story?id=5228769&page=1
Mitch Winehouse needs to take a page from Jamie Spears and STFU.
My brother is bipolar, and my mom has borderline personality disorder, and I’m almost positive that Amy has one or the other. She’s a perfect example of why involuntary commitment is a necessary evil. I don’t know the laws regarding that in the UK, but if possible, Amy’s family needs to get her into treatment immediately. At my urging, my dad did so for my brother last year. He really hated us for a while afterwards, but while that was painful, it did save his life.
I quit smoking cold turkey Dec 28th, 2007. If you careabout your health and truly want to quit, you can. Yes, it is harder for some more than others, but when Dr.’s are telling you it’s cigarettes or your life, one would think she might choose the latter!
Where there’s an addiction, there’s always an underlying cause. No one ends up in Amy’s condition unless they have serious self-esteem issues, and she’ll never resolve her drug and alcohol problems without first addressing those issues. I just want to grab her and make her watch a recording of the Grammys, when she was finally starting to put on some weight and smile a bit, and churned out a great performance. Remember?
I actually met Amy briefly after a show when she was touring with her first album, and she was so incredibly sweet and gracious and funny–all those pics of her where she stops everything to sign a few autographs, or bring tea to the paparazzi…not staged! Yes, she’s remarkably talented, but I think that her reputation for kindness is the real reason that her fans still have her back, in spite of all her other issues.
Amy Winehouse is a UGLY BITCH. I mean…fuck, look at those pics. She’s FUGLY.
