Matthew McConaughey and Camila Alves named their baby “Levi”

Now that OK! Magazine has the exclusive first story that Matthew McConaughey and Camila Alves have named their first child Levi, I think there’s little doubt that we can look forward to seeing the baby’s debut in the pages of OK!.

I figured Matt might name his kid after some moderately obscure God of leisure, but no, he named him after the world’s most famous brand of jeans. They have a biblical explanation for choosing the name, though, and Matt explains that Levi is another name for the apostle Matthew, and that his son was born at a very significant time. Alves is Levi’s middle name, and he will not have a hyphenated last name.

Explaining how they came up with the name for their baby boy, Matthew tells OK!, “Levi was another name for the apostle Matthew in The Bible. They were, in fact, two names for the same person.

“Our son was born at 6:22 pm, and this particular time represents my favorite verse in the book of Matthew in The Bible: ‘If thy eye be single, thy whole body will be full of light.'”

Baby Levi’s middle name is taken directly from his mother Camila’s last name. “We wanted to incorporate her family name,” explains the proud new father.

To all the well-wishers and fans, Matthew and Camila have also released the following statement:

“We welcome Levi Alves McConaughey into this wonderful life and look forward to living in it with him. In the mean time and all times, just keep livin’.”
—Matthew David McConaughey and Camila Maria Saraiva de Araujo Alves

[From OK! Magazine]

Camila’s full name is so regal-sounding. I love those multiple South American names, like in a Gabriel García Marquéz novel.

Considering that Matt has an older brother who named his kid “Miller Lyte” in a warped tribute to his favorite brand of beer, Levi isn’t that bad a choice. It’s like Matt figured he may as well honor his jeans as well as the bible. Because kids bring an element of the sacred to everyday life.

Congratulations to Matthew David McConaughey and Camila Maria Saraiva de Araujo Alves on their new arrival, Levi Alves McConaughey.

I had no idea Matthew was so … so … spiritual.

  3. geronimo says:

Oh please! Just name your baby and be done with it. No one needs an explanation! Enough already. 😯

    Congrats, happy life etc.

I like it, I love the old Biblical names.

The guy who invented the jeans was called Levi Strauss. He made canvas pants during the Gold Rush. They were strong and would hold up an entire season at the gold fields. Everyone was saying to each other “Have you tried those pants of Levi’s?” and the pants became known as Levis.

It’s gonna take that child until about age 6 to be able to say his full name! Not that there’s anything wrong with that – I figure the kid is lucky just to have arms.

  6. Diva says:

A lot of first time parents explain their baby’s name to people.

“Because kids bring an element of the sacred to everyday life.” Interesting thing to say. It’s true, but not in the way that I thought it would be before I had kids. Being a parent is a life of servitude. But a spiritual life should be one of servitude. So for every one glory moment there are a hundred, “Can’t I be left alone for a minute???” But it brings you to this weird place of sublime poop. It’s crazy, but great. Anyway, thanks for that comment and reminding me of the beauty of it before I go haul the kids out of the tub and deal with the whinging to follow 🙂

Syko, Levi Strauss made denim pants with rivets to keep the pockets from tearing off. Some say from the weight of the small sacks of gold dust. Denim, a heavy duty blue cloth worn by French sailors and woven in Nimes, France hence the name, De Nime, used by Strauss probably the first in U.S. to do so .
More than you ever wanted to know I’m sure.
I like the name Levi. It always makes me think of Elton Johns song. I also like hearing the story behind peoples names, but maybe that’s just me.

I dont know why all the fuss. at least three kids in my small town were named levi. its very common and has nothing to do with jeans.

The boy’s name Levi \l(e)-vi\ is pronounced LEE-vye. It is of Hebrew origin, and its meaning is “joined”. Biblical: Levi, third of Jacob’s 12 sons, became father of the Levites tribe that was later assigned priestly duties. The name was revived by the Puritans.

Levi has 4 variant forms: Levey, Levin, Levon and Levy.

Baby names that sound like Levi are Lev, Leif and Lew.

  13. Syko says:

I did know the origin of denim…but the first pants were made from old tents, later he started with denim. Probably not much later, but the first were really just what was on hand. Like most inventions are. I think he may have been the first to use denim in pants, also.

  15. Teagen says:

I have a friend named Levi, and no, he wasn’t named after the jeans. It’s not that uncommon or odd. :/

  16. AC says:

I like the name a lot.

  17. Gigi says:

What song of Elton John has “Levi” in it?

Actually, it’s a very beautiful hebrew name with great importance in the bible.
It’s also Jacob’s son that was the father of a very spiritual and important tribe…

It is a very spiritual name of historic importance.

I am actually surprised that Matt has thought so deeply about a name for his child.

  18. fee says:

I like it – I was totally expecting some tripped out name and I was surprised by their choice……. and obviously the name was around before the jeans people – get over it

  19. Jen says:

Elton John’s song is “Levon” not Levi.
My son is named Levi. It’s nice to hear the positive comments.
It’s also oddly fun to dress him in Levi brand clothes.

  20. Lauri says:

At least it’s not some weirdo name like other celebs seem so intent on saddling their poor kids with. Levi is a good, strong name.

  21. Bodhi says:

Levon is a great name too! Levon Helm, the drummer for The Band, is an amazing muscian.

Anyhoo, I really like the name Levi! I love Old Testament names. I’d definately give kid a name that has been around for a thousand years. Its a great connection to the past

  22. breederina says:

As someone pointed out Levi and Levon are variants of
    one another.
I said the name reminded me of the Elton John song.
    Yeesh, picky picky.

I agree Bodhi, I’ve always had a thing for Levon Helm
    myself.

  23. TIA says:

BIRACIAL CHILDREN ARE THE MOST BEAUTIFUL !!! Two different races in this baby and I bet he is gorgeous.

  24. Bodhi says:

Woot woot for good music, Breederina! I’m willing to bet that Matt has rocked out to The Band a time or two… 😀

  25. Meredith says:

Love the name! I really thought he’d go the Miller Lyte way and I’m glad for the kid’s sake that they didn’t. Congrats to them!
