There was a lot of buzz at this year’s Sundance festival over a previously unknown, younger Olsen sister named Elizabeth, 21, who starred in two films. According to the National Enquirer, this is causing some rivalry with her older more famous twin sisters, Mary-Kate and Ashley, 24, who never really made it in films after they did that New York Minute movie in 2004. Mary Kate has had some roles, most notably in The Wackness in 2008 with Ben Kingsley, but her film career never really took off like her sisters is about to.
The twins are boiling with jealousy over their younger sister’s astounding success at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.
Elizabeth Olsen, 21, had crowds abuzz with her starring roles in two films – “Silent House” and the highly praised drama “Martha Marcy May Marlene.”
But rather than being thrilled for her newfound stardom, Mary-Kate and Ashley, both 24, are “filled with envy and regret over their failing to make the transition to big feature films,” an insider told The Enquirer. While the twins have earned a fortune with a media empire and as achild stars in their high-grossing family movies, they’ve never been able to break through to become successful in serious films, as their less-famous sister has now done.
“Mary-Kate and Ashley expected to fall into more mature project as they got older, but sadly that hasn’t materialized…”
Meanwhile, Elizabeth already has another big-time project in the works – teaming up with heavy hitters Robert De Niro and Sigourney Weaver for the thriller “Red Lights.”
Added the insider: “Mary-Kate and Ashley love Elizabeth. But they hate being eclipsed by her.”

The article barely mentions the Olsen Twins’ fashion business, but they’re really raking it in with their high end line, The Row. Kaiser reminded me that “They are legit fashion designers, completely accepted within the fashion community” and that they’re strict about their manufacturing and make sure that everything is made in America. I never got the impression that they were hankering for movie careers, but Mary-Kate has certainly been acting in the occasional film and TV show. It’s not like they need the money, but I could see them resenting how their little sister is suddenly making it big when they saw their film careers fizzle out.

Well when only one got the talent….that’s not fair. i truly enjoyed the twin when i was younger but they have just gotten so kooky most can’t see past that. it makes it hard to be believable.
well, for one (sorry if this is mean), she’s much prettier than her sisters.
also, she wasn’t a “child star” so she doesn’t have that stigma.
and perhaps she’s just a better actress?…

If this is true (fingers crossed it’s not), this is really sad. The twins are multi-millionaires (billionaires??) after capitalizing on their cuteness and humor when they were younger.

If i had even a quarter of the amount of money they had, i would buy that girl the biggest giftbag of congratulatory gifts ever. Thats what loving sisters would do for each other, giving support.

To me the twins always look a little bizarre and almost always conjoined, so that may detract from their bankability. They are pretty girl, but they ruin it (to me) with the raccoon eyes, the baglady clothes, the frightened looks, etc. They look like they should be living in “Grey Gardens”
To me, it’s a shame, as they could be very attractive and they are far to young to look like this.
I can tell by just that one still at the top that this Elizabeth Olsen is tons more talented than those two. Haha.

I mean, really…a jersey-tee for $275? jeans for $400? a white cotton button down blouse for $450? Khakis for $565? a tunic-length cashmere BLEND (it’s not even 100% cashmere!) sweater for $1190?

I don’t know, they seem like they would be jealous over someone else in their family taking the spotlight away from them. Sure, they have a lot of cash, but they don’t really do any acting these days, and maybe they are jealous that she not only is getting attention, BUT that she is also getting rave reviews for her ACTING, which is something neither of those girls can do very well.
Elizabeth and James isn’t made in America, their line where they do the volume. but it doesn’t matter because “made in america” doesn’t mean shit anyway. There are tons of sweatshops in LA with bussed in immigrant workers and all of the componentry, including all fabric and trim, is from Asia and some from Europe. I think the Olefin’s are amazing designers in their own right and respected in the industry, don’t get me wrong, I just don’t think you guys should be talking about things outside your areas of expertise.

well, it’s not their fault they were pimped out as children-and i’m sure that is where their body image issues came from, and the desire, today, to not reveal themselves much in that way….i think they are perhaps over wearing and selling their young sexuality-

Besides, most child actors don’t transition to adult roles, t.v. or film. It’s rare when they do. Leo, Jodi, JGL….a few others…but sooo many stories of the ones who simply became addicts and shadows of their former selves…i’d say the twins are 50/50 on that front. doing okay and not kay at the same time.

Elizabeth does not have the duck-lips because she is not getting injections like MK & Ashley are. I remember when, for a short period of time, Ashley stopped plumping her lips & she looked so much better. You could instantly tell.

Eli knows she’s just a starlet who caught a break, even if her sisters don’t quite get it. There are dime a dozen actors every year who’re considered rising stars but never make it. By this time next year, it could be all over and Eli could be back to asking her sisters for loan…
One thing I appreciate about Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen is that they don’t whore themselves out. Rarely do you ever see them photographed out and about, and you never hear of them going clubbing or partying like Paris Hilton or Lindsay Lohan.
That said, I’m sure that they’re happy for their younger sister. I think if they wanted to, they could probably get another movie made, but I think they moved on from film and are happy just doing their fashion business.

One thing I didn’t like about the twins after Full House is that they did EVERY movie together. It made it look like they were only worth watching if they were both there, or that they were too much like crutches to each other. Should’ve pursued work independently.

I don’t follow any gossip on the Olsen twins so I know next-to-nothing about them, but I just had to click into this post to check out what Elizabeth Olsen looks like (I’m always curious about celebrity siblings who fly under the radar). And I, too, like to believe that there’s no merit / credit to this story, and that all the Olsen siblings are close and supportive of one another – especially given the twins have named one of their clothing lines after their younger sister.

Re Older sister thing: OK I’m the older sister and my younger sister (it’s just the two of us) has always been competitive to the point that when I started to get grey hair she had to tell me how much more she has. I’m not jealous of her success, and she’s doing better than me!
Wow reading these comments makes me so glad that I just have a little brother. We’re nothing alike and we’re both smart and talented in what we like to do, so any praise he gets I’m not at all jealous of and vice-versa. In fact, we’re just proud of each other when one of us accomplishes something great. We don’t get compared very often at all because, like I said, we’re so different and into different things. And as an added bonus he’s never tried to steal my clothes or makeup.
I doubt that MK and Ashley are jealous at all. I’ve gotten the impression that because they were pushed into acting at a young age, they resent it and feel somewhat exploited by it. Whereas their ventures in fashion were completely their own doing and they’ve built their own empire. Why would they miss acting after that? I think they are quite content to stick with fashion, aside from MK doing the odd side project in film when she has time.
Elizabeth is beautiful and her success with indie and alternative films shows that her talent is legit, and she’s not riding on the Olsen name to get her parts. I admire her for that, when she could have gone the route so many celeb sibs/kids go, trying to monopolize on the family name. I think she’ll become a big star known for doing serious roles that require more than a pretty face. The fact that she’s aligning herself with the likes of Sigourney Weaver and Robert DeNiro reflects that.
