James Franco’s rep on whether he was stoned at the Oscars

franco1

There’s been a lot of speculation that James Franco was baked out of his mind at the Oscars, which would certainly explain his very mellow, phone-it-in attitude the whole ceremony. I defended Franco in an earlier post about this, which many of you disagreed with, including Kaiser. My point was that the guy may be an unprofessional douchebag but no one could have made that material funny or watchable and I think he realized that and just sort of coasted through. It’s also worth noting that he often acts like that, and whether it’s snobbery or just his general demeanor is up to interpretation. It could be due to a lot of herb, but according to Franco’s rep that’s not the case. He claimed his client was sober and that “James does not drink or do drugs ever.” A simple “No, James would not jeopardize an important job like that” would have sufficed. The ever part makes it less believable.

In Marc Malkin’s coverage of this on E!, he mentions that other sources confirm that Franco isn’t a partier and that the guy was just exhausted from a busy week:

Franco was not under the influence on Sunday. “James does not drink or do drugs ever,” his rep tells me.

Several sources (who have no reason to spin me) confirm that Franco is not a partier.

He was “exhausted” because he had spent several weeks flying back and forth from the East Coast to L.A. to rehearse on weekends. By the time Sunday rolled around, one source said, “he was going on 20-hour days four days in a row.”
It’s certainly not the first time someone assumed Franco was a stoner. It almost cost him 127 Hours.

“I wasn’t sure at first,” 127 Hours director Danny Boyle told me in October about casting Franco. “We met him and he was so relaxed—he looked stoned to me. People say that about him. But he’s not. In fact, he’s abstemious.”

As for the Us Weekly report that he and Hathaway grew to “hate each other” during Oscar rehearsals, reps for both insist there’s no animosity between the two. While they may not have become best buddies, one source insists “they’re friends.”

Hathaway’s rep says, “Anne adores James and had a wonderful time hosting the Oscars with him.”

[From E! Online]

I’ve never heard that word that Danny Boyle dropped, “abstemious.” I assumed it meant a person who abstains but it means a person who is moderate in their eating and drinking. Boyle probably thought it meant straight edge too.

Getting back to this story, I get the criticism of Franco, I really do. He can be charming and witty when he’s on his game, so it’s true that there’s no excuse for that behavior no matter how lousy his lines were. I’m reminded of Franco’s appearance on Inside the Actor’s Studio late last year. He was engaging, funny and excited. Of course he was talking about himself, which is a key difference from his Oscar duties.

Even assuming that Franco’s rep was telling the truth and that the guy was just exhausted, that’s no excuse for blowing a huge gig like this. Most anyone else would have tried to rest up ahead of time for such a big moment in their professional careers. I still say that Franco on his most gracious A-game wouldn’t have made the show any more watchable, though. People have a tendency to blame the host of the Oscars when it’s poorly organized, too self congratulatory and not entertaining. The fact that producers used Hugh Jackman as a punchline instead of inviting him to host again shows how clueless they really are.

Somehow James Franco reminds me of the Gold medal skier Bode Miller. When everyone expected Miller to win Gold at the Olympics and all eyes were on him…he balked, was accused of being a drunk, missed his gates. Four years and a lot of misguided bad press later, he quietly returned in 2008 to win three medals Gold, Silver and Bronze and is today the greatest skier of his generation…he always was but chose not to prove it until he was ready. Maybe James Franco is poised for greatness, too, but not really ready for the spotlight.

  2. Shay says:

Whether he does drugs or not in his private time is irrelevant. He was shit at presenting the Oscars. Even the jokes he uttered were horrid. In some instances, he wouldn’t even look at the camera, his eyes were off elsewhere.
Hopeless is all I can say, especially after they would have apparently rehearsed before the awards.
I really don’t understand what the fuss is about him. He is no big deal.
I think he brought Anne Hathaway down in many ways. The guy is in dire need of a chemistry injection for God’s sake.

  3. Keen says:

no, he wasn’t the best host ever. But I rewatched the Oscars (or at least the highlights) w my husband and even the tiny bits of Anne Hathways crazy giggling and yelling made me want to punch the TV. Maybe by the end of the rehearsal process he just couldn’t stand to be next to her? I think she’s an excellent actress and does great on SNL but she was incredibly annoying at the Oscars. Maybe he just wanted to play it cool and be a smooth host and she was being crazy “I won a contest and I get to be near the STARS” lady and they just really brought out the worst in each other. Hopefully Billy Crystal or Hugh Jackman will host next year!

  4. Rita says:

I give Franc&beans a pass in the snoozing picture. Elemental Differential Equations and Boundry Value problems did the same thing to me in college.

  5. Str8Shooter says:

Franco is a decent (not great) actor, but he was a total bore on a show that needed some UMMPPHH. Bad choice. As for Hathaway, I still do NOT understand the appeal of this girl. She came off as a giggly school girl who thought she was hilarious when in fact she SUCKED.

I’m just glad I Tivo’d this sad mess so I could miss most of it.

  6. Amy says:

Honestly he probably bit off more than he could chew. He probably didn’t realize how much effort goes into hosting the Oscars and what with classes and schoolwork and traveling back and forth, no wonder he came across so loopy. Add the terrible material he had to work with, and he probably just realized the whole thing was a waste of time.

To be fair to Anne and James, in recent years the hosts haven’t been great and they’ve all been people I loved! Ellen Degeneres, Jon Stewart… The producers have failed to find a formula that works. And when they do (like Hugh Jackman), they keep trying to change things up.

  7. CJ says:

People are ripping him much too hard as though he were a bad date and you couldn’t just change the channel. He’s a brilliant actor and I loved him in 127 hours. I don’t blame him for the format and suckitude of the hosting. In fact, he should be applauded for being such a professional, juggling all his responsibilities. Cut the guy some slack.

  8. lucy2 says:

I think a big part of being a professional is knowing what you can and can’t handle. He seems out to prove that he can do anything and everything all at once, and it’s too much. I agree with people in the previous postings that if he were really serious about his education, which is great, he’d be focusing on that instead of trying to also be Mr. Hollywood too. And if that were the case, he’d have realized that hosting the Oscars on the other side of the country was just not going to work for him. Instead of making that decision, he tried to do everything, and failed.

Or he was just really stoned.

  9. Muffy says:

I think they both sucked. In the first few minutes Hathaway acted like the crap they were reading off the teleprompter were the funniest lines ever read, and her holding her side to contain her laugher, meh! Why not just show people arriving and then spend a half hour giving out the six major awards?

  10. Marjalane says:

Not that this is in any way an excuse for a crappy show all the way around- but I’ve read that these two- (Hathaway and Franco) were pretty much the last choice. I’m sure they DID ask Billy Crystal and Hugh Jackman, and both said, no thanks. I saw Hugh Jackman on Leno and he said it was a huge commitment and he would prefer to be remembered for doing it well once. Plus, he’s all involved with doing the next Xmen. Love Hugh Jackman.

  11. Roma says:

I’ve heard over and over again that he doesn’t smoke pot.

I do think he’s a mellow person by nature. I think he was a poor hire as he’s not as engaging as a host should be, but come on. They knew who they were hiring.

  12. Jackson says:

I don’t even care why he sucked – if he was stoned it meant he didn’t care, and if he was sober it meant he didn’t care….so, either way, he didn’t care. And if you don’t care, you don’t even try, then don’t take the gig! Yes, the material sucked, but it generally DOES suck for awards shows. He needed to put on his Big Boy pants and do his J-O-B job.

  13. Arianna says:

dont care. still love this man
cant stand hathaway i’m glad to see other people found her irritatingly chipper.

i think the bottom line is… the oscars are too long, boring, and horribly written!!!!!!!

  14. mln76 says:

I am not a huge James Franco fan but this dude isn’t the only person who’s bombed at the Oscars much funnier men have bombed there (David Letterman, Chris Rock, and Jon Stewart I am looking at you). In 3 weeks everyone will have forgotten about it.

  15. Brittney says:

“James does not drink or do drugs ever.”

    High-larious.

  16. Dana M says:

So his pupils were clearly dilated due to “exhaustion”.

  17. Oi says:

Thank so much for that picture as the header. I never “got” this guy, but that was funny. I think he’s stretched too thin. He needs a serious focus.

  18. kathug says:

they just need to bring back hugh jackman! oscars needs some singing and dancing

  19. Isabel says:

I don’t quite understand the backlash against him. He was exactly as he is at any given time. Did people expect him to turn into a show pony?

The material was crap, and the producers missed the mark. James Franco was James Franco. Maybe people are watching too much Pineapple Express.

  20. JenJen says:

He said that he does not do drugs, not that he doesn’t smoke weed.

  21. Dani says:

I think he is just a quirky guy. He doesn’t seem to buy into the Hollywood hype. Just does his thing and makes no apologies. I respect that about him. He may have not been well matched for the oscars but so what. He gave it a try and will move on. That’s life. At least he puts himself out there and that’s how you grow.

  22. REALIST says:

He wasn’t stoned. He just knew he was blowing it almost from the beginning and/or couldn’t tolerate the “role” he was playing, but he had to keep going for hours more. Ann is a good sport, James is a rebel artist type.
This was entertainment, really, not acting per se.
It’s odd they hired them for the gig in the first place. He is just too Indy Man..

  23. Bubbling says:

I think he just is not all that Hollywood and that he didn’t give a flying f*** for missing promotion and after party. With that said if he took the gig he should own it, good material or bad, but it looked like he didn’t care that much… I still appreciate his dong and waiting for it patiently on HGF, *I always had thing for douches so he might even be one

  24. MiMi says:

Maybe Franco thinks he’s too hip for the room and he took the oscar gig to turn it inside out? Who knows? I wish he’d passed on hosting it b/c now he looks like a tool

  25. Hmmm says:

His rep protesteth too much! BTW, Hugh Jackman was asked to host both these past two years following his stint on the show.

Meh. This too shall pass. I think Franco’s an okay actor, but I can’t give him any sort of pass overall because he’s just drifting through an education that a lot of us would kill for. I also hate that he’s using it as an excuse every time his image gets a little tarnished.

  26. Mshuffleupagus says:

I’m not sure he was stoned. A lot of times people think I’m stoned but I just have sleepy eyes and spend a lot of time thinking about naps. But I do think he was trying to be a hipster douchebag and separate himself from the entire situation. Why the hell do it then? He’s one of those hipsters that makes me want to punch him in his skinny jean shriveled balls. Oh, I’m gonna work on a soap opera, because its so uncool, its cool. Shut the f*ck up. Asshole.

  27. Johnny Depp's Girl says:

I so didnt understand this choice… it was just weird to have him host.

  28. KLO says:

i don’t get what everyone is talking about. I like that he’s a mellow fellow like that 😀

But what do I know, I’m a “cold” northern european.

  29. foozy says:

IF HE WASN’T HIGH, THEN HE HAD STAGE FRIGHT. WATCH CAREFULLY AND YOU’LL SEE..

  30. alexandra says:

The only people to blame are the Oscar people. These two are not seasoned comedian entertainers, comedian is the key word. Short sighted Greedy people trying to attract a bigger demographic. Maybe someone in the Oscar comittee was baked and really thought those two were a good choice.

  31. Hammer says:

Isabel: What’s “show pony” have to do w/ it? He took a job to HOST, which involves showing some personality, bad material or not. He’s evidently a “show pony” when he talks about himself on Inside the Actor’s Studio. But then, being up ones own a$$ will cause that. Bottom line: Being a responsible professional means putting on the big boy pants, just like someone said. He’s shown he can’t be professional.

Dani: Yeah, sure he doesn’t buy into it. I’d bet everything he would have jizzed ON THE SPOT if they had given him the Oscar, but then covered it up with some laid back stoner “I totally deserved this because “I WENT TO FILM SCHOOL” yadda yadda yadda like he did at the independent spirit awards. He’s not “too indy” or “too hip,” he’s just playing that role because he thinks it makes him edgy. Whatever. He comes off as a douche.

Muffy: I think Anne went overboard to compensate for the dead weight she was carrying.

  32. TQB says:

I gotta tell you, I’ve been told some bad things about myself in job reviews, etc., but “he looked stoned to me” has them all beat.

  33. Alexsi says:

I for one am surprised that he was chosen to be the host of the Oscars. Ann could of done well on her own. I prefer James Franco the actor not the host. Despite his lacking performance at the Oscars. I still love him. =D

  34. Camille says:

I’m not sure I buy the denial stories. This greasy looking, pasty and sweaty faced man seems to be on more than ‘just pot’ to me. Hell if Angelina Jolie is allegedly a ‘high functioning’ heroin user (yeah right), then this douche certainly seems to be on something. Either way he is an unprofessional idiot who most likely is trying to be a jack of all trades but failing.

  35. Kola says:

I love every comment made! I wish you guys could be the critics of EVERYTHING! Honest and entertaining. Kudos to everybody!

  36. BillyBob says:

did u all see his tweets, he came out of his dressing room when it started wearing sunglasses. At night? I knew then we were headed for trouble

  37. grace says:

I know that everybody has to suck it up at their job, but our regular jobs do not involve reading stupid lines in front of millions of people while having the chance to win the most important award there is in your field. That being said, I would not blame him for behaving in a weird way. If I were in his shoes, I’d be totally off till the time the winner was announced.
But people have this necessity of blaming a single person for something that goes wrong, it doesn’t matter if there is a team involved in the work. So I guess he was just the one chosen this time.
After 127 Hours, I think he is a brilliant actor, and my opinion didn’t change a bit.

  38. menyc says:

Love Franco. It was a shitshow and he called it. Someone wrote: “Even the jokes he uttered were horrid.” YES! They were written for him and he realized they were horrid so he just pulled back. Absolute props for him. btw TKS sucks, Fincher was robbed. Time will prove it.

  39. Katie says:

They need to get someone to host the Oscars that isn’t afraid to make fun of the celebrities that are there….what’s Chris Rock doing these days?

  40. dick says:

I found him to be funny. Original and less than overly hammy, like his dumb co-host. He is who he is. They knew this when they hired him. I LOL’D repeatedly.

  41. Chris says:

“The fact that producers used Hugh Jackman as a punchline instead of inviting him to host again shows how clueless they really are.”

I heard Jackman was invited but didn’t want to do it.
On Franco I actually thought he looked stoned at the time, so it’s interesting to read that I’m not the only one. He had that smiley lightly toasted look about him all night. On the quality of the material you’d think Hollywood would have the resources and talent to put on an absolute cracker of a show on their night of nights. Personally I’d like them to shorten the ceremony and just give out awards for movies, directing, acting, music and writing. The rest could be done at a separate ceremony like at the one Marisa Tormei hosted.

  42. gobo says:

If the scripting was so crap that he just withdrew then I’m with him. Why should he compromise himself by being enthusiastic about crappy jokes and writing.

  43. jayman419 says:

Anne is a pretty girl, and has a great smile. But when she goes with that dark red lipstick (which she always seems to break out for the award shows, hosting or not) well, she just looks like a clown and suddenly her mouth becomes like three-quarters of her face.

I didn’t watch the show, but from the comments I gather her make-up was the least of her troubles the other night.

  44. eric says:

Why do people find him so interesting? He’s mediocre. His attempts to “do it all” only shine the spotlight on this.

  45. erika.rain says:

Abstemious also means “characterized by abstinence” so I think Boyle can use it in that context. But the first definition is the most prevalent, you are right.
