You know it’s a good day when you’re blessed with three stories about projects dreamboat Johnny Depp has signed on for. The news came out earlier today that Depp, 45, had signed on to play the Mad Hatter in a 3D live action animated adaption of Alice in Wonderland, to be directed by Tim Burton. Now there’s news that Depp has signed on for another Pirates of the Caribbean sequel, something that seemed to inevitably be coming based on the enormous box office take of the last three episodes. He’s also set to play sidekick Tonto in a Lone Ranger film to be put out by Jerry Bruckheimer. I’m not one to criticize Depp on the big screen in any capacity at all, but doesn’t Hollywood have some new ideas on how to capitalize on his hotness? Tried and true may be safer in these troubled economic times, though.
Depp announced the dual roles for Disney by appearing on stage at a Disney event at LA’s Kodak theater wearing both his Pirates costume and a Lone Ranger mask. Why are there no pictures of this?
It appears the gazillion dollars the first three Pirates of the Caribbean movies raked in weren’t good enough for Walt Disney. Franchise star Johnny Depp will reprise his role as Captain Jack Sparrow for a fourth installment of the franchise, according to Movieweb.com.
Disney also announced Depp will play iconic sidekick Tonto in Jerry Bruckheimer’s big screen take on “The Lone Ranger” as well as The Mad Hatter in Tim Burton’s forthcoming “Alice in Wonderland” remake.
The announcements came Wednesday during a Disney Studio Showcase at the Kodak Theater in Los Angeles. Depp appeared in full Sparrow regalia, while wearing a black mask in a nod to his Lone Ranger role.
I always thought of Depp as the kind who has some shred of integrity when it comes to choosing roles. We all know the “Pirates” flicks paid him a ton of money, but films like “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” showed there was still more to him than mumbling like Keith Richards for two hours.

The last Pirates movie made no sense to me and I found it kind of interminable. I probably wouldn’t go see another one unless it got great reviews. Depp has expressed his gratitude to the Pirates series in interviews and has mentioned several times that he’d be open to doing another one. Keira Knightley has pretty much ruled out reprising her role as Elizabeth Swann in another sequel. Orlando Bloom also indicated that he’d like to walk away from the series, saying in May, 2007 that “I’m looking forward to taking on some completely new challenges. I’ll be sad to see it go, but it’s time to do something new for me. The great thing about this film is that, as a trilogy, there’s closure.” As long as there’s boatloads of cash to be made and the star is up for another sequel, there’s no such thing as closure in Hollywood.
As I just wrote in the Natalie Portman post, I dislike many actors. EXCEPT JOHNNY!!! I’d watch him in anything.
I love me some Johnny…but the last POTC movie sucked big time…i hope they´ll come up with a better story. Looking forward to Alice though!
why is he making such lame movies lately? does he really need the money? come back, johnny!
I think he makes these family-friendly movies so his kids can watch them.
It has to be a lot of fun to make the cartoony movies. Just to be bigger than life and be silly and outrageous.
I’m still laughing to think of him as Tonto. Can you imagine his facial expressions? 😆
Love me some Johnny.
He’s doing these types of movies mostly for his kids, but I’d really love to see him in something new that has some teeth to it.
Anytime, Anywhere… 😀
i’m not overly thrilled with pirates 4, but i think tonto will be a pretty good role. plus the fact that he is partially native american, which he seems to want to portray in a more realistic way than hollywood does. it may seem more genuine than if it was like brad pitt or something.
Johnny Depp does not look Native American. In fact, he played the white man to Gary Farmer’s Indian character in ‘Dead Man.’ I mean, yeah, I guess he’s a step up from the blond Brad Pitt, but not by much — unless they write into the script that Tonto had a white parent.
I love Johnny Depp, but there are SO many really talented Indian actors out there — why does Hollywood insist on pulling crap like this?
*coughcoughmoremoneythanGodcough*
I agree. Yes, more Johnny. I have to admit that, for me, what adds to his sexiness is the love & devotion to his family. Skanky dudes+gross = not sexy. Johnny + not skanky = sexy.
I know, I was the only one in the universe who really liked POC3. I HATED 2 though, HATED it, and everyone seemed to love that one.
It doesn’t matter to me if Keira and Orlando don’t come back. It’s all about Cap’n Jack as far as I’m concerned. I’ll happily look forward to seeing 4. Another movie Johnny in eyeliner and long hair is absolutely fine with me!
I cringed when hearing about another Pirates film. 2 and 3 were already completely devoid of plot. I thought Johnny would make better choices than this
yaaaaaaaaaay!!! UI loved POTC series utter fun no matter what hee hee! I iz a happy person. 😛
Is it bad that I imagine myself as the boney loud mouth Kiera Knightly whenever I watch the two kiss in the second movie? 😆
I think Johnny Depp is a “dance with them whut (sic) brung ya” kinda guy. PotC made him beaucoup dollars and has allowed him to be financially independent enough to do quirky roles he likes. It’s kinda ironic that the hotness that is Depp really just wants to do character parts. Now if they will just let someone write a decent script for PotC IV.
Stop selling out Johnny!!!
Johnny Depp is a very gifted man. A rare talent in todays world. I have enjoyed every bit of work this man has brought to the screen. Good for him taking on roles that are different. I look forward to future work. Totally excited about Tonto. I was there as a child when the Lone Ranger first came out. What great things Johnny will bring to the role.
Pirates have been also referred to as corsairs who operated in the Mediterranean Sea between the 15th and 18th hundreds of years, and the buccaneers who lived in the Caribbean throughout the 17th Century.
