Robert Pattinson’s shiny brown suit: a bold choice or a bad call?

wenn9266006

I don’t critique men’s fashion enough around here. That’s going to change! With this one post. It makes sense to start small with Robert Pattinson, who is by all accounts much, much prettier than most women. Plus, Sparkles was recently voted the Best Dressed Man in Britain – a decision I did not hate. Sparkles also has all of the tools to be quite stunning on the red carpet too – he has that beautiful face, he’s tall and slender with lovely shoulders. He should be able to wear the hell out a suit.

So what’s the problem? Nothing, really. I mean, in these photos from the Berlin premiere of Water for Elephants, I guess I could nit-pick him to death. He needs to stand up straight! He’s got that tall-guy thing of slumping his shoulders, and he gives the impression that he’s still not really comfortable in his own skin. Then there are his loveable, crazy-ass faces. He’s very animated on the red carpet, but that’s not a complaint. I love his crazy faces.

Perhaps my problem is with wearing a slightly shiny BROWN suit on a red carpet? For the most part, I kind of applaud his decision. Most men don’t like brown suits. Most celebrity men wouldn’t choose brown for a red carpet. The descriptors aren’t good: dirt, mud, sh-tty, drab. Sparkles is unique, and he’s a fashion-risk taker, only not really. Look at the suit – he actually put some thought into it and it’s tailored for his body. Plus, I just like that there are celebrity men who think it’s nice and appropriate to wear a suit and tie for the red carpet. It’s so quaint!

So… while I’m not a huge fan of this suit on him in particular, I applaud the choice.

By the way – I keep meaning to embed this video. It’s Reese Witherspoon and Sparkles interviewing each other for Moviefone. I love when they were talking about costumes and Sparkles talks about his wide hips! I love him for admitting it, and I love how Reese tries so hard not to laugh at him.

    Yuck! I vote bad call!

  2. the original bellaluna says:

That colour would look awesome on me!

  3. I’m so sick of this dude. Yeah, he’s good-looking (sometimes) but it’s seems he’s everywhere and it’s tiresome

  4. gobo says:

Not keen on the suit but that interview was hilarious!

  5. Sisi says:

Don’t like the tie with the suit, the saturation isn’t right and the color is too blue/gray it needs something fresher. No matter what the object, I never like a red-ish color in combination with a blue-ish color. I hate this contrast the most, obviously. Lol, rant over. Sorry to bother you with my color obsession.

But the suit itself could could definitely work.

  6. Dr_Venkman says:

Suit looks great in real life I bet, problem is flash photography – it makes the suit look shinier than it actually appears to be without it.

Being on a red carpet one should take that into consideration of course.

  7. luls says:

somethings off about the whole oufit, the shoes/tie dont really match with the suit right.

As for the suit itself, its not bad, i think the fact thats its a shiny brown rather than drab, is what saves it! 🙂

  8. Leigh says:

That interview is hilarious. I get the RP charm now, he’s SO funny.

BTW the book he talks about in the interview is absolutely amazing and worth the read.

  9. Photo JoJo says:

I can’t help it, I love Sparkles. Loved him Harry Potter, love him for signing on to the hideous Twilight movies and not bitching too much about it like KStew does. Love him for making other strange films, for being awkward and quirky and hot and messy all that the same time. And that interview was great, makes me want to see Water for Elephants even more.

  10. seVen says:

Wow… hes so beautiful and that suit is so fug… Id like to see him pull off a off white or cream colored suit.. but maybe it would wash him out as well… meh , im not very fashion forward.

  11. khaveman says:

He’s young, tall, thin, cute and British. He can wear $hit like that. He carried it off. Love the shoes.

  12. mia girl says:

I love how this guy looks in a suit. And I do like the color choice. It would not work for most men on the red carpet, but it works for Pattinson. I read yesterday that this suit is a custom made Gucci.

The Moviephone thing pushed me over the edge into total adoration. This guy could charm the pants off of me!

  13. Samigirl says:

I don’t mind the suit so much as I abhor the shoe choice! Matte black and pointy. With brown? I suppose he couldn’t have worn blue shoes though… I don’t know what I expect of him, but the shoe is killing me.

  14. Vee says:

Love him, love this look! And, his new movie is quite lovely, a very well done picture. The elephant is worth the admission price. Go Rosie!

  15. mdf says:

The color is HORRIBLE and would be on anyone. That said, I adore Robert, but I wish to god he’d find another way to release his nervousness/anxiety and retire the constantly running his hands through his hair the way he does.

  16. Mia says:

Ugly suit. Does WTE’s failure mean Hollywood will stop putting him in leading man roles? Gee, I hope so.

  17. Vee says:

Mia – Funny. WFE is not a failure, it overperformed last weekend. But whatev….if wishing negative makes you happy, you keep on keeping on. LOL!

  18. Nanea says:

    ♥ Christoph ♥

Sorry, just had to, he should have gotten some love on this post as well…

  19. Mia says:

@Vee How exactly does a movie that came in 3rd overperform? If that was the case, it would have beaten Rio & Madea. With its cast, it should have done better.

Let’s be honest. Fox was hoping the Twilight fans would flock to see their Edward in this movie and it didn’t happen. I don’t see it happening this weekend either and forget about the week Thor premieres. It’ll be crushed.

I’m not wishing negative. I’m stating a fact. Hollywood is attempting to make him out to be a true Hollywood star when he’s a one-trick pony. 🙂

  20. Ari says:

The last pic he looks good in it but that pic of him pushing his hairline back is gold

  21. anthea says:

i love brown and grey suits and he pulls it off 🙂

  22. Celebs.com says:

I love the suit. I love him. I love him in the suit.

  23. anait says:

I don’t like the colour, and I don’t like his black shoes with the brown suit!

  24. Novaraen says:

Like the suit…hate the tie, it’s totally the wrong color. Anyway…the poor guy always looks so awkward and uncomfortable.

  25. Mikki says:

Russell Brand called and wants his suit back!

  26. mia girl says:

@Mia & @Vee- Just some food for thought I’m in the entertainment analysis field for a living so I can tell you that you are both right, sort of. (sorry for the long post but I love this stuff!)

Certainly you can take @Mia’s stance – if a movie isn’t number one at box office then it is a failure. That is a macro look. You could argue that Pattinson should have been able to bring all those Twilight fans out to see his movie but didn’t. That is fact. This movie did not perform even close to Twilight standards. This phenomenon happens often in film… Keanu Reeves Matrix movies are huge, but movies like The Lake House or Constantine did not come close to those numbers and did not open at #1. Or the Batman movies with Christian Bale… The Fighter certainly did not bring out all those Batman fans either (debuted at #4 in wide release behind Yogi Bear among others and made $14M opening weekend). LOTR fans do not flock to Viggo Mortensen movies. There are fans of the story and fans of the actors. Sometimes they coincide. Are these film failures? By macros standards, those that do not hit #1, or successfully bring fans out from their other films, then yes. But by other measures, these other films certainly are not.

Onto @Vee’s point about “overperform” The overperform analysis about WFE, written in multiple movie industry sites, come from the fact that a romantic period drama has an expectation of box office, and that this one overperformed that expectation. WFE was expected to gross between 13-15M and it did closer to 17M. That is another way to look at the success of a film. Plus, this movie is strong among W25+ who do not flock to films opening weekend (the way teens and young adults tend to), so as written in other sites, this movie is expected to continue to perform at a steady pace , thus not having to make all its money in opening weekend. For example, already in the weekday grosses, WFE has moved up to #2 behind Rio.

Finally, another measure of success is gross to budget. WFE costs $38M to produce and so with the opening weekend, the expectation that it will be a steady performer for a bit longer and with international markets opening over the next few weekends, this movie will recoup costs and then some. But yes, it will be crushed by Thor and Fast Five two big budget fan boy targeted films that are expected to open at #1.

As for the future of Pattison, jury is still out. But I can tell you that generally, the performance of WFE is seen as a big positive for him, that and the fact that Cronenberg cast him as the lead in his next film.

  27. Mari says:

    He’s growing on me like a fungus…

  28. Forelithe says:

    Sartorial splendor !

  29. sassy says:

I didn’t notice Rob – all I see is CHRISTOPH!! Please put my pretend boyfriend on for HGF! You’ll be my pretend-best-friend!!:)

  30. k says:

Love his fashion sense! I’ve always found him to be adorable as there’s just something about him that does it for me:-)

  31. Shy says:

This is the first time in years that I enjoyed Resse. In that video. Who knew she has it in her 🙂 So relaxing, funny, easy, put her bitchiness away.. It was nice.

It’s something in the atmosphere and the mood in those Unscripted videos. Celebrities are always charming and funny and at ease in them. But why those producers put such stupid questions in the monitor? Always.

  32. Vee says:

@miagirl – thank you for your analysis, very interesting. Yes, the good performance of Water for Elephants bodes well for Rob and like you mentioned the fact that Cronenberg cast him in a lead role.

  33. raincoaster says:

I think I was the first celebrity blogger to harsh on this suit. Thank you for bringing it to my attention again, along with the fact that it’s too short and he’s wearing black shoes.

  34. Sugar says:

Too short? Are you crazy? Look at the break, and where it hits on his wrists. The whole look is… almost there, but it just isn’t.

  35. j. katz says:

When the Twilight movie series is over, do we get to stop pretending he’s straight?

  36. Claire says:

Love him! He is too cute. Freshing and sweet. Nice change after the Justin Timberlakes/Justin Bieber’s of this world. I liked Reese too.

  37. Vee says:

@jkatz – Classy! Do you stalk message boards outing actors you think are gay? Why would you do that? Oh, I know, it makes you feel all big inside. Got it.

For the record, Rob is straight.

  38. jemshoes says:

Well Rob is Sparkles so why not a shiny brown suit? 🙂 The interview with Reese was cute, but the questions were so inane and tween!

  39. Newbie says:

I love the way it fits, and I love the shoes, but I hate the color. The same shininess could have been ok in a gray or even a navy blue or something.

  40. harfang says:

Aw, I’m just glad the poor kid cuts loose in little ways once in a while. …On a side note that guy from Inglourious Basterds is a demi-gawd!!! and we do not see enough of him.

  41. Abby says:

    lol what a great video.

  42. Skye says:

The suit is way more than shiny, it looks cheap and tacky. A shiny suit, was at one time was style taboo for men, but now considered edgy/trendy. Not only is the suit not flattering on him, but the shoes are black and the tie is grey. Brown and black can work together, but wtih all three colors going on he has his seasons intermixed. He is way out of the box on this one – warm fall brown tone, with cool winter grey and black thrown in. Not working at all.
