‘Green Lantern’ wins the box-office weekend despite horrid CGI and Blake Lively

greenlantern3

Over the weekend, Green Lantern officially grabbed the top box-office prize with an estimated $52.7 million, which is slightly amazing considering that the trailer looked like an enormous mountain of shiny green crap. Despite this supposed coup, however, $52.7 million certainly doesn’t make a dent in the film’s $200 million production budget (with at least another $100 million blown on publicity on top of that). Of course, all of the fanboys flocked to see the movie on opening weekend, so I seriously doubt that the movie will have “legs” in the coming weeks. Certainly, there will be no substabtial measure of positive word-of-mouth in manner of X-Men: First Class (including but not limited to Kaiser’s official take) to keep the money rolling in for the weeks to come. Interestingly enough, many prominent critics have chosen to pepper their Green Lantern reviews with some choice words on Blake Lively’s (for lack of a better word) performance:

“[Carol] is played by Blake Lively, and some in the audience might be heard to observe, ‘What is she, like, 15?’ And frankly she is also not too terribly convincing these days playing anything other than somebody who doesn’t know how to frame a cellphone picture. What. Ever. As I think they said on that TV show she used to be on.”

“Blake Lively wins this year’s Kristin Stewart Award for Indistinct Diction”

[From Wall Street Journal]

“…Carol Ferris, who would be an amazing character as depicted by Blake Lively if only she weren’t allowed to speak. Ever.

[From Pajiba]

“As appealing as Blake Lively might be in the right role, she’s miscast here and it shows in her wooden, unconvincing delivery. A life-size Barbie Doll would emote better.”

[From James Berardinelli]

“Blake Lively is decorative — no more”

[From Rolling Stone]

Ouch. Not that those meanies will affect Lively’s own plan for A-list stardom, for she’s still got Leo, right? Meanwhile, the J.J. Abrams’-produced Super 8 held on to second place by adding another $21.3 million for a two-week total of $72.8 million. If nothing else, this will give a substantial boost to Elle Fanning’s future marketability.

In third place, the debuting Mr. Popper’s Penguins landed with a decent but not stellar $18.2 million, which is about what analysts expected from this Jim Carrey-starring kiddie flick. In my review, I stated that this was a much better than expected movie, but (admittedly) that bar was set pretty low in the beginning.

In its third weekend, X-Men: First Class nabbed another $11.5 million for a domestic total of $119.9 million (and $282 million worldwide), which easily takes care of the pic’s $150 million budget and virtually guarantees that we’ll probably get another installment of Fassbender/McAvoy deliciousness.

And somehow, The Hangover Part II added another $9.6 million for an astonishing four-week domestic total of $232.7 million (and $488.7 million worldwide). Exactly how did this happen?

LOL I feel really bad for Blake Lively, I dislike her for all the wrong reasons and I am justified for some. I am lime jello when it comes to how lucky she is. Thats no excuse to dislike her, I guess. These reviews on her performance are super sad. Poor girl. Anyway, I adore Ryan Reynolds and because I adore him so much I happy the Green Lantern was a huge success…well a success.

  2. Eve says:

200 million? 200 f*cking million dollars on that?

I really do not get how money is spent in Hollywood.

And The Hangover II being so successful baffles me. I watched the first one and couldn’t laugh once during the entire movie. About (male) friends getting wasted…Hot Tub Time Machine was a way better movie (and funnier).

  3. the original bellaluna says:

So I was correct in my assumption (from the trailers) that this is, in fact, a crapfest? Who knew!

I liked RR in Definitely, Maybe (though he looked too young for the part) and The Proposal. But as I mentioned, Hubs said he’s too young for the Green Lantern role. If RR is too young, I can only extrapolate that BL is w-a-y too young for the role.

    And I sense a scapegoat here…

  4. luls says:

Im surprised at all the bad reviews of blake’s performance! She actually emotes much better in this movie than on gosisp girl!! And my friend who saw the movie with me agrees! Its like the 1st time Blake shows actual emotions on screen!! (granted, shes still more of a doll-figurine than a human, but at least shes finally EMOTING!)

  5. lisa says:

I was questioning the “huge success” thing. it did well, but next week will tell all. Transformers is coming out in 2 and Cars 2 and Bad Teacher.. It will need a lot to stay at the top.

I guess Ryan will get more work. But funny how the woman in these movies is always trashed. As if these superhero films have strong writing for the females. I don’t care who they are. ANYone could be put in the role. Makes no difference. Look at Katie Holmes replaced by Maggie. Gwyneth tried to make it seem as if her role as so important, but it was all about Robert. Look at Cameron in The Green Hornet.. window dressing nothing more. Sad that these movies don’t support women.

considering all the women before her and their unmemorable performance…

    Blake did ok

  6. Riana says:

I’ll be the first one to say it.

Blake Lively will be another Megan Fox…except not hot.

Both girls have their positives and negatives. Fox runs her mouth but is very dedicated to her step-son and a quiet life. Lively up till the intentional nudie leak was a very wholesome, sunny girl who seems very nice.

Neither girl can act but desperately wants us to believe she can.

While I’m sure Reynolds was bad, he at least has proven he has the chops where as Lively as another critic said ‘is the most ironically named actress in Hollywood’ she’s dead wood on long legs.

I assume the A-list machine will shift to further attaching herself to famous men because much like Fox you can only act badly in so many movies where its everyone else’s fault but your own and expect to be an A-lister. Also, in spite of all this A list talk it seems she’s getting passed over for a lot of movie roles. For every 1 she’s in, there’s 3 I’ve heard she didn’t get.

  7. gabs says:

You know, most reviews dont mention her AT ALL. Haha its obvious you searched and found the meanest quotes possible for her and I get it. Its more interesting to write about how she ruined the movie because we hate her. She is a TERRIBLE actress but the movie doesnt depend on her. Its Ryans job. I really thought he was miscast as well to be honest. What I mean to say is..yeah Blake sucks but it isnt fair to blame the movies failure on her alone.

  8. curthe says:

so sexism!! you could put the commets about Ryan Reynolds and his role … terrible reviews for him.

  9. lucy2 says:

The trailers for this looked AWFUL, I can’t believe they spent $200 million on what basically looked like an animated movie with Ryan’s head floating around in it. Not surprised the reviews are awful, but agree with lisa that none of these superhero movies give the female characters anything to work with – not that BL would be much good if they did.

Super 8 on the other hand, was really good and entertaining, and made for $50 mil, with pretty great special effects too.

  10. Jen says:

I actually thought Blake Lively was good in the role. However, as there was a reference to a sequel after the ending credits, I hope they choose a different actress for the character, as she should be featured more prominently in a sequel, if it were to happen, and I don’t think she’d be a good choice for it.

I’m pretty biased about Ryan Reynolds because I think that man is HOT. I liked the movie.

  11. Tiffany says:

Not planning on seeing this green load of crap. Super 8 was great, X-Men is next-all approved by the 11 and 13 year olds, Kung Fu Panda too.

  12. Iggles says:

Ryan Reynolds looks terrible in this! I think he was miscast yet they’re focusing on Blake??? Definitely sexism. All the CGI in the movie looks ridiculous anyway!

  13. Eve says:

I’ve just checked Box Office Mojo to confirm Green Lantern’s budget and hell…it really is 200 million! WTF?

Also, I was surprised to see that Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is close to reach a post in the “1 billion club”.

  14. lilred says:

I saw Hangover II this weekend and it was a rediculously huge unfunny waste of time.

  15. sassenach says:

Look I know you guys hate Blake but now you just are being sexist. When I went to Rottentomato there were so many critics who TRASHED Ryan’s performance but you only put up the quotes on Blake. Lame.

  16. kibbles says:

I just saw this tonight. Not the best superhero movie but Ryan Reynolds is possibly the handsomest young actor in Hollywood right now. He has charisma, sex appeal, and a sense of humor which allows him to carry a non-serious action movie or comedy. He’s not the best actor but he has the “it” factor that many here have argued Julia Roberts had and which her niece Emma Roberts lacks. Some actors have it and most do not. Ryan has it and I think he will last a long time in the industry.

Blake Lively does not have “it”. She is a bad actress and an overrated beauty. She isn’t likeable the way Kirsten Dunst was in Spiderman. Yeah, Blake is skinny and has a nice figure with the help of her bolt-on boobies. But her face wasn’t particularly attractive on the big screen. Her eyes are also dead and emotionless. I do believe she has the determination to become A-list and will try to attach herself to more A-list actors in coming years to further her career. She may or may not succeed. Maybe her career will flounder or she will have a lasting career only for her looks or relationships like Jessica Alba or Jennifer Aniston.

The movie would have been better if they had fleshed out the characters more and spent less time on CGI. Hopefully the second installment will be better.

  17. kibbles says:

Most of the reviews I’ve read have been kind to Reynolds. Most of the criticism is aimed at the direction and CGI. Most of the negative comments about the acting have been directed at Lively. I agree that many of these action flicks do not develop female characters as much as male leads, but I’ve seen other actresses do a lot with bit parts. Lively is simply not a good actress so it is easy for critics to go after her in a lackluster movie.

  18. imho says:

    BWAHAHA!!! Just like the self-pimping Pippa Middleton;
Flakey Unlively will never & wont ever happen!

  19. Mick says:

I saw the movie because I am a Ryan Reynolds fan. However, I don’t think the actors were the problem, the plot (story) is the problem. The two main characters are Ryan and Blake, they are supposed to carry the movie surrounded by aliens, a dark green background and a very weak plot. Then, the movie suddendly ends.

Thor had a story line which was easy to follow, several beautiful people were in the movie, it had suspense and some love and attraction.

Green Lantern was lacking in substance, and that’s the writer’s fault, not Ryan or Blake’s fault. When you are given just so much to work with, how can you make something happen when the substance is lacking?

  20. normades says:

“Blake Lively will be another Megan Fox”

Nothing could be farther from the truth. Megan is a dumbass that shot herself in the foot by pissing the wrong people off and is headed for the F-list. Blake has a “master plan” and knows how to kiss all the right asses weather it be Anna Wintour, Langefeld, Affleck, Leo or Spielberg. Whether we like it or not she is headed for the A-list (if only by association, not her roles).

  21. Turtle Dove says:

Lisa #5 – “But funny how the woman in these movies is always trashed.”

Exactly. Why do you think that is? If it’s a huge success that belongs to the guys. Major double standard.

Kibbles #17 – Is your avatar your baby? Too cute. 🙂

  22. Amanda G says:

I’m so embarrassed for Jim Carrey. I guess he’s going the way of Eddie Murphy and doing lame kids movies.

  23. Camille says:

@Eve: ITA with you about The Hangover! That movie was so over rated in my opinion.
My hubby and I also both liked HTTM. It is much, much funnier than TH.

I still plan on seeing GL (it looks like silly/stupid time waster fun)- but only on DVD and only because I am a RR fan.

It doesn’t surprise me that Blake is getting bad reviews, she looks terrible in this.

  24. ShirylMay says:

Now we know why America Ferrera rolled her eyes,on camera while blake was talking, during that Good Morning America interview a couple of years ago.
She was unbearable then and even more so now.

  25. jocular says:

It looks like a movie mess. WHy on earth did this film with a space theme and a hero nobody has ever heard of get such a big budget? I suspect that it was originally a smaller budget but the studio kept throwing money at it in hope of salavaging it because the director had made such a mess. There is such a great supporting cast – it’s a shame. A few good quality indie films could have been made instead. I don’t think Blake could have tanked the film whether she is good or not, it wouldn’t sway the critics to such low ratings – the female role is small part of a big ole’ mess by the sounds of it. There’s so many elements that need to be right for a summer blockbuster and they would have been better off choosing a director who has worked extensively with CGI before and spent the money on the script.
Anyway here’s a link to Leo negotiating with a photographer to not publish pics of him flirting with a woman in NYC.

  26. Chris says:

With talent and friends in high places (Leo) Blake has all she needs to make it to the top. As long as she doesn’t call anyone Hitler.

  27. Mick says:

    @ 25. I agree…..

  28. Sue says:

May have #1 spot but it’s not making back its 200 million in America. Horrible movie.

  29. monde says:

    @jocular
And thats the REAL Leo; getting worked-up,conscious,annoyed,discreet when its comes to paparazzi – all in contrast when he’s SHOWMANCING Flakey when GL is just about to be release.

  30. jocular says:

@monde yep I’m believing now it was a showmance, disillusioned.

  31. Deltona lakes says:

Kaiser a movie studio receives 55 percent of gross the other 45 percent goes to the theater owners. Include marketing cost a studio would have to do 375 million in business on a 150 million movie before they see a profit. So I don’t know if you are guaranteed a sequel to xmen. However, you may if they sell enough in video
market. That’s what happen with kick-ass. It didn’t do so great in box office but it did above expectations in the video market that they are
    now producing a sequel.
