After ending her long-running daytime television talk show, Oprah Winfrey hasn’t exactly been idle. Instead, she’s been devoting much of her time to the school she opened in South Africa, and she’s stated in a letter to her fans that she plans to return this fall to teach a ‘Life 101’ class. Of course, this isn’t the same as teaching an academic subject, but I can admire that Oprah’s doing some real footwork at her school instead of, you know, pulling a Madonna by merely throwing money at the cause (i.e., that fraud-tinged “Raising Malawi” charity), expecting things to happen, and then being all surprised when it falls apart. Nope, that’s not happening in this instance; and while Oprah will undoubtedly be housed in a luxury villa during her fall stay, she’s at least putting her mouth where her money is, so to speak.
Oprah Winfrey is back in the USA after spending time with her “girls” at the school she opened in South Africa, but don’t fear, ladies, Miss O will be returning soon in the role of teacher.
“They were all stressed for tests, but doing fine,” Oprah emailed fans — including yours truly — about her students. “No major crisis this trip. I love being with them and talking to them about all things important. When I’m there I’m talking from the time I get up till I go to bed, about EVERYTHING teenage girls are going through. It’s the same all over the world.”
Oprah revealed that she would be returning this fall to teach a class called “It’s Life 101” about all the stuff she wished someone had told her about how the world really works.
“Should be fun since I love to teach. And they’re like sponges,” Oprah said. “Like 12th graders everywhere, this first class is both anxious and excited about going to college. Most will be the first in their family. So it’s a very big deal for them, and they’re feeling the pressure.”
Adding that there is nothing like leaving the USA to get a deeper appreciation of the freedoms we sometimes take for granted.
“When Chris Rock was last on the show he said, ‘real wealth is having options.’ I thought that was pretty profound,” Oprah says. “I now stress to my girls that education prepares you to have options. Without it you have none. Just took a walk around the neighborhood watching sprinklers on the back lawn … (I love sprinklers) Made me think about the red dirt road I traveled from Mississippi (no sprinklers) to the here and now … And how that journey could have only been possible in the USA.”

Sometimes, I find Oprah’s shtick a bit too sanctimonious but, all things considered, she’s really putting good things out there in the world, and I hope she follows this pattern throughout her post-daytime television era. It’s easy to criticize her for living in her own sort of wealth-induced bubble, but it really doesn’t work any benefit to complain about what she does do in terms of charitable purposes. Yes, Oprah has a self-inflated picture of her own importance, but she does a lot more with her celebrity than any other number of examples.
Here’s another photo of Oprah in May as she was inducted into the Illinois Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame (and yes, that’s Roger Ebert alongside her) as well as a picture from last year’s Walk For A Better Life in NYC.

what? what does oprah remember about a difficult life? didn’t she have a hissy a few years back about getting into a closed hermes store? is she going to teach the orphans how to deal with situations like that?
I agree with you 100 percent. I think she was raped in childhood and/or abused by more than one person. Oprah had a full scholarship. Now I know, she is not smarter than other deserving individuals. Some people are just darn lucky. Even with the free ride she didn’t finish and didn’t obtain her degree. I remember clearly hearing her on her show talking about returning to school to get her degree. In an article with this url http://www.angelfire.com/ne/lliegirls/winfrey.html says she got her degree as one normally would in 4 years. It wasn’t until she became oprah that she finally got the degree. Correct me if I am wrong but I am sure I am correct on this one. She is not qualified to teach in the U.S as she does not have teaching credentials and if the teaching rules change just for her I will be angry . She can teach at her own school I guess because she can do whatever she wants at her own school.
just read: she left school to accept a job in Chicago. “Received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Speech and Drama from Tennessee State University. 1989” Oprah was not impressive to me but many of her topics were.
I want to search how she finally got her degree in 1989…did she schlup with her books to classes…not. need i say more. she should teach a class on money and power ad privledge
First lesson: hire no-nothings like Dr Phil, Rachael Ray and Sara Ferguson, and validate them by giving them their own shows.
Second lesson: do not research before you jump on bandwagons, and when things turn out badly, make sure that you blame someone else (this also works well when you hire sexual predators as teachers).
I never find Oprah’s routine a bit sanctimonious; I always find it very sanctimonious.
I’m so over Oprah. The only reason she started donating to charity was because people started questioning why she wasn’t, when she was so rich. And the cars she’s famous for giving away were donated; she didn’t spend a penny. The girls’ school is great and imo, is the best thing she’s personally done. (Her Angel network was abandoned as soon as she retired, from what I read.)
Oprah really doesn’t know jack about what it’s like to be a 17 year old girl in South Africa and what they need to know to survive there. It’s probably a nice gesture but a little oblivious.
How pretentious! Life 101? Sure Oprah, sure – like you have anything in common with these girls.
South Africa has UNBELIEVABLE poverty… I’ve seen it with my own eyes. People there need so much help, and Oprah could have done so much MORE for South Africa than she has. Further, her school is decked out to the nines with expensive designer everything, and she could have afforded to educate more than just a couple hundred girls… but she didn’t. Local ordinance or something? I don’t know.
I can just imagine how the opening statements of her class will go: “Girls, I’M OPRAH! Hi! Now, here’s how life works: you get a job in broadcasting, you work your butt off for a few years before moving to a city where your race is especially scarce in broadcasting and you lead a parade down the middle of the city so that people can’t help but notice you! OOPS, I’m talking about ME again! *her signature inane braying laughter*”
some of the girls probably have it better than she did at their age.
remember she grew up dirt poor
Oh please….
Yeah, I can hear it now. “The ‘secret’ to life is in just wishing for whatever you want. You too could be as successful as me, but if you’re not, you’ve squandered the potential in in the universe which is just waiting to give you everything. Loser”.
I do not subscribe to the Cult of Oprah, but at least she has kept up with the school. Maybe spending some real time there will lead her to do more.
“Should be fun since I love to teach. And they’re like sponges,”
Much like her former audience.
Gosh! U guys here are so mean. Being rich does not mean that she has to give everything she WORKED HER A** OF TO GET.Besides oprah does a lot for people u guys just dont want to see it.btw u never forget how it feels to be poor
Boom: what sort of classes do you think that Oprah is qualified to teach? Perhaps spelling and typing?
And the hate begins. Sometimes I wonder about those that sit behind a computer which is why I hardly ever comment anymore. It would be interesting to see what some of you contribute on a daily basis besides your negativity that is…
Well, Lydia, since you asked, I have done the following: raised money for homeless children; raised money for animal shelters; bought food for homeless people with my own money; given clothes to homeless people literally off my own back; adopted 6 cats from the street and rehabilitated them; rescued 13 other cats from directly off the street and found homes for them; volunteered at animal shelters; volunteered at homeless shelters; written countless letters & made dozens of calls to my local House reps & Senators to urge them to protect wildlife & help people in this country who have nothing to their name; volunteered at both “mainstream” and special education schools; and donated books to schools that need them. Among other things.
I don’t have hundreds of millions of dollars to throw around, but I do what I can. And I don’t shove it down the throats of my “adoring public,” either.
@nymeria-
hold on to your panty hose, princess -this is a gossip column, not a soap box. it sure is great that you have such an outstanding resume and the selfless need to post it that im going to reward you the “oprah got nothing on me” award for the day.
now take a seat, kitty hoarder.
I wish this cow would STAY in South Africa. Life 101 my ass…..
Duh – she is a public figure. Everything she does will most probably become public knowledge – even her giving. If you know her history, she even gave when she didn’t have much. Giving is not about having millions honey (but it is fantastic to give away millions if you have it!). Maybe you need to learn that…
@arock (#16) – lol, I am totally a kitty hoarder. I apologise for getting on my soapbox; I just get so irritated when people ask on sites like this, “Oh, and what do *you* do for the world?” My overarching point was, you don’t have to have millions and flaunt everything you do in the press in order to do good things for the people (and cats!) around you.
I want to take that class.
arock:
hahahahahahahahahahahahahah, you rock!
Yeah, like she knows anything about normal life.
You know it’s nothing but love.
I’m SO sick of Oprah Winfrey. I was never one of her ‘sheeple.’ Very few really no what/who this woman really is. There is an agenda behind everything she does and she has never fooled me.
My overall thinking on this new law; The implementation of this measure obstructs competition to big industries and promotes the elimination of the small farmer. This is a revenue/job killing law. Please contact Governor Schweitzer.
