Jessica Simpson and Nicole Richie are working together on a Project Runway-knockoff show called Fashion Star. It’s already started filming, and it will be airing on NBC in a few months. About a month ago, The Enquirer reported that Jessica and Nicole weren’t getting along at all. The claim was that Nicole is super-professional, always on time, always knows her mark, and that Nicole is kind of a Mean Girl. On the other side, Jessica is always late, always farting, always dumb as a box of mall hair, never knows what she’s doing or where she’s going, and she doesn’t even realize Nicole is mocking her and making fat jokes about her. It was an interesting story, and I really didn’t have any problem buying that dynamic between the two women. Now Us Weekly seems to be confirming that there are definitely issues between Nicole and Jess:

Nicole Richie and Jessica Simpson are both mentors on Fashion Star, a reality competition for aspiring designers debuting midseason on NBC. But a source tells the new Us Weekly — on stands now — that there’s “definite friction” between the two women.
“They chat only when they need to, and they have wildly different opinions about style,” adds an insider.
Richie, 29, “thinks Jessica doesn’t have much of a high-fashion eye” and “makes snarky comments about Jessica’s outfits,” according to a source.
But Simpson, 31, isn’t phased by Richie’s digs. She “really doesn’t care what Nicole thinks,” says an insider. After all, Simpson’s fashion empire had $750 million in sales in 2010, while Richie’s lines pulled in an estimated $10 million.
“Nicole may know trends, but Jessica believes she know how to make clothes for all kinds of women,” says a source. Still, other insiders tell Us the ladies “get along well, and hang out on set.”

Hm… I don’t think Jessica’s style is all that great either, but she occasionally wears stuff that I really like. On the other hand, I almost always hate what Nicole wears. She’s still doing that boho crap that’s SO Sienna Miller circa 2004. And when Nicole tries to go glam, it’s almost always cheap-looking and over-processed too. Honestly, neither one of them has any business judging fashion, but I’ll give Jessica more of a pass because her clothing lines are so wildly successful, while Nicole’s House of Harlow crap looks like 1970s vomit.
By the way, Jessica denied that story that originated in In Touch Weekly a few weeks ago, about the possibility that she might undergo a breast reduction before her wedding. Jessica tweeted her thoughts:

I definitely believe they don’t see eye to eye because they are very different but I wonder if it’s being blown up to get people to watch.
I personally think that Nicole’s fashion sense is much better than Jessica’s.

I can see Nicole being snarky and superior. And obviously Jessica isn’t exactly a Rhodes Scholar but seriously – being meaner doesn’t make you more clever -I just means you are cruel. I don’t remember Nicole being best friends with Paris Hilton for her raging intellect. Maybe Nicole only likes other uber thin people.
Nicole is smart, witty and ambitious… stylish – not so much. Studied is exactly how i would describe her fashion. Taking pot shots at sweet pretty dumb blondes with large breasts is probably a pretty ingrained habit at this stage. Still, I’m sure anything she says about Jessica is milder than the things she no doubt thinks about herself (see eating disorder, repeated drug abuse etc.)

I appreciate both of their perspectives. Nicole is amazing with accessories and I love her high fashion sensibilities. Jessica is popular, American, Macy’s-style fashion for errbody. Which is also great and fun.
The press, both positive and negative, is totally working on me. The only negative is that it’ll be on NBC. I’d love to see it on Bravo.

These types of stories are meant to drum up publicity for their show and fashion lines.
Okay, I really don’t care for either of these two women at all. I find them both annoying and talentless. Having said that, however:
Jessica Simpson is business-savvy and is very successful. I give her props for that, very surprised props.
Jessica Simpson is very pretty, and is not fat, and just needs to do some weights and cardio and work on her core to be “tightened up.”
Her breasts are fine.
I think Nicole Richie is NOT attractive at all, although I give her props for turning her life around quite a bit.
Nicole has a more refined, boho chic style. Jessica’s style is more for the everyday woman. There is room for all kinds of fashion. If I remember correctly, a few years back Nicole was a tad chunky.
How could anyone not love Jessica Simpson? Its like hating puppies! At least she had a legit claim to fame in the begging, she used to be a singer. And Ive seen some of the crap House of Harlow puts out, Jessica’s line is way better and affordability priced. Im rooting for Jess in this one. I hope she uses one of her boobies to slap Nicole.

I also believe that Nicole probably has a very old behavior pattern of being bitchy and making mean comments on other people, maybe as psychological protection (making fat jokes on someone when you yourself had weight issues in the past seems typical). That’s why I never bought her new no-longer-mean-and-bitchy, completely-different persona, just simply ’cause it takes much more than nine months to change such deep rooted habits.
I love Nicole’s style, she always looks very chic.
I actually like both of them. As someone said above, these stories are likely made up to get publicity for the show.

being a fashion designer myself, I find it very sad that participating in a reality show -with 2 women with no design talent (as they most likely have designers in their staff, and having a sense of style .-any style- does NOT make you a designer) and probably no seaming/clothes construction experience- is a viable option for starting you own brand or getting your name out there. Things are really difficult nowadays…
Can we address the fact that NEITHER of them are “natural” blondes?
Because we already know that Nicole used to be “thicker,” used to hang with Parasite, comes from a lot of money, and has been as pious as they come since she “turned her life around”: of course she’s a mean girl! Look at the facts, people.

Nicole Richie is an F-ing bitch. Anyone would show up late to the set just to avoid small talk with her. Did anyone see the “Americas Next top Model” where Nicole asked one of the weaker girls who was mean to her? Then she went and told the mean girl everything the weaker one said, causing a huge fight amongst everyone! Then Nicole and Paris (who was also there) cracked up laughing. Juvenile and MEAN person, that Nicole!
My thought is what I ALWAYS think when I see photos of Jessica…..WEAR SHOES THAT FIT. I just do not understand that unless she is wearing pumps with her toes covered, they are always half- arsed hanging over the ends of her shoes! What is up with that?????

Not really a fan of either if these chicks, but I could see this kind of friction between them. Neither strikes me as particularly stylish, but Jessica seems annoying, but harmless, while Nicole – I dunno – but I don’t have a hard time buying the “mean girl” vibe from her.
If I had been best buddies with the Herpes Sore called Paris Hilton, I think I would shut my mouth. Because gee, isnt Jessica worth more than Paris? I second the opinions that Nicole is a mean girl. I remember the text messages she sent to some girl (can’t remember her name) after Blohan stole a bunch of her clothes. They were so, so nasty and just plain mean. It was an absolutely high school thing to do, and it was clear that Nicole considered herself the Queen Bee. I’ve never bought her supposed “turn around.” I’m sure she is still the very nasty person she was before she had her kids.
Last thing — I’m glad I’m not the only one who noticed the “phased” thing. As a writer, I get insulted when shit like that makes it into written publication. I write textbooks, and a big part of modern textbook writing is figuring out a way to write for young adults with crap reading skills without dumbing down the material. Every time I see a major grammar/syntax/spelling error in a publication it just reminds me of where we are in terms of people’s reading levels and why we are there, as well. Sigh.
@Celeste: SAME HERE about biscuits! It’s not even that the word is used, it’s that it’s repeated over and over and OVER again within the same story. Everytime I see the word on here, I just close the site because I know out of 50 words, 30 of them will probably be BISCUITS.
There’s always a puppeteer with reality TV. They either cast the two of them precisely for their differences and the drama that would inevitably result or Nicole’s snarky side is being encouraged by producers or she herself is letting it loose because she knows what people watch.
I think Jessica is sweet. So what if she farts and burps.. don’t we all? It’s much harder to be real and true to who you are instead of trying so hard to be the person who society tells you to be. Nicole seems to forget that she was larger than Jessica at one time. I don’t think Jessica is fat. Since when is it only okay for women to be reed thin with 11 year old bodies? Women are beautiful because they come in ALL shapes and sizes.
Nicole’s style is way better than Jessica’s. But then she’s a twig so clothes are more forgiving on her. Jessica has issues picking the right clothes for her body and ends up looking dumpy.
I like both their fashion lines, but Jessica’s veers on the going out at night and looking to get laid, while Nicoles is more boho chic lounge around casual. Nicole’s is also more expensive. I can see why Jessica’s line is more popular since she caters to the night crawl crowd. I do love her shoes 🙂

I hate to see statements like ‘Oh, but Jessica has a very successful fashion line’, as if she goes to work on a daily basis and makes savvy business and/or fashion decisions. It was very decisive and lucrative of her team to agree to license her name/personality/image to this fashion line, but I think that even without her likeness, the line had a good chance of success because of it’s broad appeal and penchant for re-packaging high-level clothing/shoe designs for the general public.
If Nicole Richie is behaving how she is described here, then all I have is pity for her.

According to Forbes, Jessica Simpson earned about $20 million last year. The Camuto Group who owns the rights to her name is the one that made $750 million not Jessica.
I’m sorry but Nicole is lucky we even still care about her…and I do like her but I like Jessica’s shoe line and ummmm…750 million…BITCH! Done and done.
I think its all about publicity so people watch and can see the tension themselves. I would suspect that the two are totally different people and that they probably don’t always see eye to eye – its healthy to NOT!
Nicole Richie is a spoiled rich kid who had everything handed to her because of her daddy. She wouldn’t have even been in public eye if it weren’t for The Simple Life which really featured two spoiled rich kids who had no talent. Jessica on the other hand, had a smart dad who got her into show business, took care of her and let her develop into who she was. She is not all that talented but is likeable because she seems pretty average and has worked damn hard for what she has. $750 million – holy shite! That’s awesome!

Nicole seems to have grown up a lot, but I wouldn’t be surprised if this is true. Both of them still seem to have a bit of that high school mentality.
I love my Vincent Camuto shoes so comfortable and stylish. I also like the JS line. And yes since there is a general consensus about the “juvenile words” thrown around here so often, hope there is a change. You know once or twice funny, after that just annoying.

All I’m going to say about Nicole is remember when she had a huge press push for her line of… Head bands? Yeah. Jessica has licensed her name to fashion brands, she’s made some great choices doing that, but I dare you to wear those gorgeous shoes, most uncomfortable shoes ever made. The show might be fun just to see what hot messes they come up with on their own without stylists to guide them.
