Tom Cruise was greeted at Mumbai airport by hundreds of paid “fans” (update)

This story sounds almost too good to be true, but you never know. Yesterday, we covered Tom Cruise preening in front of Taj Mahal during his weekend visit to promote Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol. In the process, Tom declared that he’d willingly go Bollywood, and many of you thought he was merely hoping for an opportunity to once again play a dashing young leading man. Indeed, Tom’s got the try-too-hard oozing from his pores and is often desperate to impress even while rocking out on a balcony to universal cringes. So what would Tom think if he knew that the hundreds of screaming “fans” that had greeted him at the Mumbai airport didn’t actually know who he was? According to Firstpost’s Bollywood division, these people were in fact hired greeters who were paid to cheer and shout for Tom as he enthusiastically waved back at them. Really:

When the world’s biggest star and possibly the most famous Scientologist on earth, Tom Cruise, stepped out of the Mumbai domestic airport on Saturday with his entourage, little did he know that the screaming crowds he was waving out to were not his Indian fans at all!

In fact, the 200-and-odd people gathered there didn’t even know who he was and they couldn’t care less. They had been hired at the rate of Rs 150, or $3 per person approximately, by a model coordinator to do the same!

“Tom kaun? I don’t know who he is or what he does. We were told to come here by 1pm today and wait for a foreign VIP to come out of the airport gate and scream and shout when he came. None of us know who Tom is. There was a buffet lunch also for us and we were paid Rs 150 for this job today. We do this for television shows and other such events where crowds are required,” said one of the junior artistes at the airport, who was hired as an excited Tom fan.

Given that the absolutely handsome Cruise of the disarming smile has a huge fan base in the country, thanks to some really great and popular cinema (Jerry Maguire, Top Gun, Cocktail, Risky Business, The Last Samurai, Rain Man, A Few Good Men and the Mission Impossible series) it would not have taken much to get more than half of the city’s population to converge at the airport or any venue to catch a glimpse of the star they love and adore.

Cruise is in the city to promote the fourth installment of the Mission Impossible franchise, Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, which also sees Anil Kapoor playing an Indian character, Brij Nath, in the film.

For someone who is chased down by the paparazzi all over the world in fast cars and helicopters and whose every movement is tracked down by tabloids and magazines, including his wife Katie Holmes’, and daughter Suri’s too, it’s going to come as a shock to him that he was greeted by a motley group of paid people posing to be his fans in Mumbai. Of course he doesn’t know it yet, but when he does, it is not something Cruise is likely to forget in a very long time!

[From Firstpost]

We don’t have access to photos of Tom’s arrival in Mumbai, but you can see the claimed fans-for-hire in action here. Poor Tom. I know the guy is so full of delusions in so many ways (ahem, Scientology), but this news might just crush him if anyone dared to inform him of the matter. He supposed to be a worldwide superstar who’d never need paid reinforcements even on an international level. In order to cope, he’d have to crank his lifts to the very highest setting. Oh, who am I kidding? He’d never believe a story like this. “It’s lies! All lies from the apostates!

Update: Tom’s rep has responded to this report: “The idea that fans were paid to cheer is completely ludicrous and entirely false.” Not that a denial means anything at all, and ten bucks says that Tom himself still hasn’t heard about the story.

That is just sad… I feel bad for him 🙁

  2. Kelly says:

Ugh – the hyperbole in that article is unbelievable. “The world’s biggest star”? On what planet?

No, it wouldn’t have taken much – only 150 rupees and a bowl of soup! The story contradicts itself: he’s so famous, yet they have to pay people – who don’t know who he is – to cheer for him. If he is that deluded, that’s really depressing.

“The world’s biggest star”? On what planet?

The one where Xenu’s Headquarters are located, perhaps?

  3. Christine says:

I have to pay my fans $5 a head to cheer for me at the airport. I’m going to fly to Mumbai – Tom got a great bargain!

  4. Agnes says:

Anti-anxiety meds will help Tom deal once he finds out about this scheme. Oh, wait, he won’t take any. Haha.

    • Eve says:

      LOL!

On topic: I don’t believe those were “fans for hire”, honestly. There are people who still like him no matter what he does and there’s also the “famous Hollywood star is here and we can get close to him” factor — even if it’s a decadent actor who was a huge moviestar once, but is now desperate for attention. Just like when he came to Brazil to promote a movie or something (along with RoboKate and Suri).

I am so over him( in 7th grade when Top Gun was released)… its like I can’t even look at him anymore and yet I can not put my finger on why.. it could be him jumping on Oprah’s couch that is forever burned in my brain….his stepford wife, the whole scientology weirdness…

    • Mitch Buchanan Rocks says:

I agree, he is off putting and would have had more mystique if he had retired in the late eighties. The scientology video with him is very creepy.

  6. Marjalane says:

Does anyone REALLY doubt the truth of this story? Me thinks not.

  7. Sapphire says:

I guess a clue is that this film opened in Mumbai, not the US.

  8. lisa says:

I think his reps just denied the reports of paying the crowd.

Look like him or not. Tom is an International Star. He has millions of fans all over the world. outside the US. And those fans don’t care about his religion. There are not many International Stars left. I can name maybe 5 male and 2 female. I mean Stars that can draw the crowds and BO.. for years. Not talking the Twilight stars because outside the franchise it has not happened for them yet. There are only a few and Tom is one of them.

I think he wants this one to be big so he is pulling out all the stops. So if they reboot with someone else.. they will never pull those numbers like Tom. He leaves his mark on the franchise. I’m not a fan but my boyfriend will be all over MI4..and a lot of guys and girls too.

but I will say face wish Tom looks great . He has that ageless face. I think it was something in the water for his generation of men. They are all doing well in the aging department.

  9. Jag says:

Honestly, if it’s true it’s not a bad idea. I’m sure there are rabid Tom fans, and rather than risk one causing a scene, they paid people to greet him. Not a bad thing. But if this wasn’t the work of keeping him safe, then yes, poor Tom. lol

  10. Newtsgal says:

So Tommy girl has to pay his fans as well as his wife to pretend they like him…….how sad is that?

  11. lucy2 says:

I’m sure he does still have a lot of fans, especially outside the US, but I could totally see CoS or whoever arranging something like this to keep up his superstar image.

  12. Madisyn says:

Whoever thought of this is an azzhole. This just gave the Kuntra$ians, Courtney Stoddens, and the Lohans an idea.

  13. Catherine says:

Not a huge fan of Tom’s but I bet there are tons of people willing to show up for free. This story is lame.

  14. kimberly says:

I just came to put in a comment because I felt bad for this guy.

He used to be cool, now his whole family sucks donkey.

  15. DM says:

I am an Indian and there are lots of Tom Cruise fans in our country. The middle and the upper middle class do watch Hollywood movies.

Even if someone is not fan, people who know who-is-Tom Cruise will hang around a place if they hear he is coming.

But this “hired fans” deal seem real because not many people knew that Tom Cruise is coming to India. Reports were published after he came. Moreover, he reached Mumbai in the middle of night.

Had there been enough promotion of his arrival, the co-ordinators could have saved some thousand bucks 😉
