Kathy Griffin courts controversy (again)

For the second year in a row, CNN decided to pair Kathy Griffin and Anderson Cooper together for their New Year’s Eve live coverage in New York City. They looked like they were having the time of their lives – joking, acting silly, making too many Lady Gaga jokes. I’m not sure if Anderson was drinking, but it would certainly explain his endless giggling fits.

What happened during the live broadcast is still being poured over. Did Anderson and Kathy think they were off the air? Did Kathy scream at some heckler knowing that it was going out live? All anyone knows is that at some point during the broadcast, Kathy Griffin leaned over the railing and shouted “Screw you. Why don’t you get a job, buddy? You know what, I don’t go to your job and knock the d–ks out of your mouth!”

CNN pulled the comments from it’s repeat broadcasts, and the CNN executives are probably wishing they had put Anderson and Kathy on a ten-second time delay. CNN honchos are now in the midst of issuing denials, explanations and a litany of shrugs.

Here’s an on-air pairing that will probably never happen again after CNN’s New Year’s Eve telecast: Anderson Cooper and Kathy Griffin. Griffin was co-hosting the CNN special telecast of Times Square on New Year’s Eve with Cooper. The “My Life on the D-List” star got into hot water early Thursday morning with some choice words to a heckler that were captured live on the channel. It happened after the ball drop but while the telecast was still going on.

“Screw you. Why don’t you get a job, buddy?” she told the hecker. “You know what, I don’t go to your job and knock the d–ks out of your mouth.”

The remark had been made as the channel was about to go to commercial, which it did right after, according to a recording of the incident widely available on YouTube.

“We recognize that the comment made by comedian Kathy Griffin during the live broadcast was inappropriate. She did not know she was on the air at the time, and we removed it from the rebroadcast,” said a CNN spokeswoman.

Griffin’s rant was edited out of a rebroadcast early Thursday morning. CNN did not have a delay on the broadcast. But perhaps it should have, since Griffin is known for a blue act and even on TV has made controversial remarks. One live comment in accepting a 2007 Emmy for “D-List” offended some Christian groups.

Earlier in the CNN telecast, she lampooned former CNN Headline News host Glenn Beck and asked for a pap smear given by medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta.

CNN is unlikely to get in any substantial trouble because there are no FCC rules regarding cable obscenity.

Kathy Griffin will most likely come out of this a big winner – every time she opens up her mouth it seems that someone is trying to jump down her throat. And yet she’s always able to make lemonade out of the proverbial lemons. After her “suck it, Jesus” remarks at the Emmys in 2007, the controversy made her even more famous and she began playing bigger venues. It’s my hope that Anderson Cooper doesn’t get punished for Kathy’s remarks, and that he steadfastly refuses to throw her under the bus. He’s the one who was laughing! He was her enabler that night! Alas, I doubt CNN will let them host next year’s festivities. It’s a shame.

May I please ask what a heckler is?
I have got no clue (English is not my first language.)
    Thanks 🙂

  2. Lem says:

We were way more offended by the fact that CNN not only didn’t have the countdown timer running for that last 10 seconds but Cathy & Anderson were screwing up the time (…9..2 oh 7) Than that Cathy said Dick at a time we weren’t paying attention.

CNN should be apologizing to my kids for confusing the actual ball drop

  3. Sunnyjyl says:

Kathy was hilarious, and that guy was a heckling pest. Security should have dealt with him long before Kathy lost her cool.

  4. Holly says:

Ugh, whatever, I think the BIG controversy here should be that it wasn’t Kathy’s joke to tell.

  5. vdantev says:

May I please ask what a heckler is?

A person who yells at, insults or otherwise interferes with someone who is speaking publicly is a heckler. Usually it happens to comedians when they are performing on stage.

  6. voodoobetty says:

She has never been my cup of tea but for that brilliant comment Id seriously like to buy her a beer. That was great!

  7. Christianne says:

    Vdantev:
    Thanks a lot!

  8. Jinxy says:

Oh, god it was hilarious, a comedic comeback as old as the hills in comedy clubs but who cares it’s 2009 with Kathy and Cooper – if you were home watching live you have failed socially anyway. I can’t believe that anyone in this day an age who aren’t the Duggars or neocon weirdos would give it a thought.

  9. KDRockstar says:

Kaiser – it’s should be its.

    Sorry… I’m an English prof.

Otherwise, anyone who knows that they are hiring Kathy Griffin should know to put the taping on delay. Der.

  10. jaclyn says:

What a great comeback! haha, I love Kathy Griffin. 🙂

  11. vdantev says:

if you were home watching live you have failed socially anyway

Or were already too drunk and happy to be out driving around, smartass.

  12. NotBlonde says:

I commented twice by mistake. Could someone delete this comment?

  13. NotBlonde says:

“Or were already too drunk and happy to be out driving around, smartass.”

Or were out with their friends at a bar/club/outdoor event…

  14. t says:

    Prof. KDRockstar…

If this is the line you thought was wrong, “It’s my hope…” , Kaiser got it right. 🙂

    Kathy’s the greatest!

  15. Codzilla says:

Jinxy, you have failed grammatically and your punctuation is laughable, at best. I’ll take a mellow New Year’s Eve at home with my husband and a bottle of gin over your shortcomings any day.

  16. MoJo says:

I didn’t give the comment a second thought when it happened, but considering some people might be watching it with their kids, a small amount of complaint is understandable. Yes, jinxy, not everyone has the luxury of going out on NYE or think it’s that important to go out and party each year.

I can see them bringing Cooper back as he’s usually the “good child” (and he’s usually just that giggly), and I can’t think of anything stupider than putting a live NYE countdown on delay. That would put everyone watching it 10 seconds behind on the countdown than, oh, New York or anyone watching another channel.

  17. Suki Houston says:

Back to the ‘heckler’ thing, if you want a perfect example of a couple of funny ones, (in my opinion 🙂 check out ‘Statler and Waldorf’ from the Muppets, the two old guys in the balcony – I’m sure they’re on youtube!

  18. Kink says:

I thought it was freakin hilarious…it’s cleaner than what I would have said to that asshole harrassing me all night. I can’t wait till next year.

Jinxy – I’m sorry that you think everyone who was not out getting blitzed “failed socially,” but some of us have more responsibilities in life than that. Did you even consider people who are disabled, or with children? Wow, what a narrow minded world you must live in.

  19. Jason says:

the fact that this is just now being posted 4 days after the fact shows how slow and behind this site really is!

Get with it people……this is old news!!
and its not news at all………

  20. vdantev says:

Don’t recall anyone putting a gun to your head to sign in, read or mouth off on this, Jason.

God, school day Monday cannot get here fast enough !!

  21. NotBlonde says:

There is nothing wrong with calling out a gossip site for being late with news, vdantev. This story IS old. Sorry.

  22. dovesgate says:

I wish we had been watching Kathy and Cooper instead of Robbie Knievel making a 5 ft jump of Mirage’s volcano.

  23. CeeJay says:

Yes, the story is a bit old. Tuned in because I thought something new had developed. Honestly though, I was just glad to quit reading the Travolta posts…for the love of God!!!

  24. Jennie says:

People complained because their children were watching??!!! It’s like complaining about naked women at a strip club! It’s Kathy Griffin for Christ’s sake! You’re lucky she didn’t get into fisting. Go Kathy!!!

  25. Absolut says:

    Jinxy…
There are countless reasons why someone would be home watching this at midnight and it has nothing to do with “failing socially.” For example, here in Texas, a lot of people decided to do it up quiet instead of driving drunk when the police were authorized to take your blood if you refuse a breathalyzer. Or you might have still been hungover from a wild night the previous evening. Or you were at a house party. Or you had to work the next day, and had to go to bed before midnight anyway. It’s not important, but your comment was just irritatingly ignorant and snide.

  26. NotBlonde says:

Or perhaps Jinxy was making a joke…perhaps some of you aren’t as big of fans of Kathy Griffin as you think you are because you certainly don’t understand that type of humor.

  27. CB Rawks says:

hehehehe Love Kathy! Wish I had seen that one.

Ooh but allow me to tell you of MY New Year’s!
The hubby and I were dancing in our pyjamas after having watched the countdown and Sydney fireworks on tv, when suddenly there was a major fireworks display outside. So we ran out and discovered that someone a few blocks away was setting fireworks off every few moments and they were exploding right above our house!
It was the most awesome and scary close-up of fireworks I’ve ever seen,
and with no waiting around all day at a public park! 😀

  28. Aspen says:

You know…she’s crass and horrid..and I LOVE her!!

That woman cracks me up, and I’m glad she called back at him. Hecklers never know WHAT to do when the act on stage actually speaks back.

It was cable. It was midnight. Anyone offended can watch NBC.

  29. Dorothy says:

I think the professor was refering to the – CNN pulled the comments from it’s repeat broadcasts – which is wrong!

  30. Kaiser says:

CeeJay, Jason, NotBlonde – I wrote this on Friday, but there were some technical difficulties with getting it out. Sorry if it’s not as timely as you hoped.

  31. MSat says:

I’m 8 1/2 months pregnant and didn’t feel like being out with a bunch of drunks on NYE. I guess I’ve failed socially too. 😉

I love Kathy and Anderson together. She is like the naughty kid in class, showing off for the cute but nerdy kid who secretly thinks she is hilarious. The best is when Kathy just starts going off on something inappropriate and Anderson doesn’t know what to say, so he just ignores her and tries to change the subject. They’re like the new “Odd Couple.”

  32. KDRockstar says:

Ditto Dorothy… yay, I love other people who know their its and it’s.

I know you’re writing for CB now, but I miss seeing you on the boards, Kaiser.

  33. daisy424 says:

She never fails to crack me up. Lighten up, it was funny.
    Thanks for the laugh Kaiser!

  34. Christina X says:

    She’s obnoxious.

I’m sorry, but I tried liking her. I watched her standup and not only did it not make me laugh, but she really seems to try too hard.

Then again, I only watched one standup routine. I’m not sure if all of her routines are like that, she just gave me a bad first impression, I guess.

  35. xranger says:

After reading some of the comments on Ms. griffin, I now see who her fans are.
Young with no class, most with the IQ of a cabbage and major poor upbringing.
What a shame when ones brain thinks what she said is funny.
