In this version, Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder broke up but they’re going to remain “professional” and “best friends” on the set of The Vampire Diaries. So you can bet this is a rep’s statement:
Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder’s showmance is over. The Vampire Diaries costars, who play Elena Gilbert and Damon Salvatore on the CW hit series, have called it quits after more than three years of dating, a source tells Us Weekly exclusively.
The couple, who first took their romance public in 2011, are “consummate professionals,” the insider says, and “will continue to work together and remain best friends, which is where the relationship started.”
This makes me sad on many levels. These two were one of my favorite young couples and I was really rooting for them to get engaged. They’ve been together for around three years by my count. Plus a lot of fans were hoping that they would co-star in that Fifty Shades movie together, which is not off the table even if they’ve broken up I guess.
Still, Nina is only 24 while Ian is 34. They’re probably at different places in their lives in terms of wanting to settle down. These two were spotted together in New York just last week. So maybe they broke up then or maybe it was just a day or so ago. I’m still holding out hope that they’ll work it out. But I guess this means that Somerhalder is single, which will make a lot of ladies happy.
I checked the Twitter accounts for these two, and they did post quotes which may hint of a breakup. They’re staying pretty classy about it though.

Omg! No! I love them, I just watched the first three seasons of VD on Netflix and became obsessed!!! It is such a fun show with pretty people on it! I hope they can work it out and get back together!

I really doubt this is true. Nina and Julianne are pretty good friends and lots of pics of them go up on their instragrams of them together. They just got back from a fun time at the beach and hanging out at the MET, etc. I just see people trying to twist this story but I really (would like to) believe that they had a great relationship but were just at different spots at their lives. No scandal involved.
Sometimes being really close friends doesn’t mean anything. It just gives you easy access to your friends guy. People often break the girlfriend code like sleeping with a friend’s ex or their currnet flame. Let’s not forget Tony Parker cheated on Eva Longoria with her best friend.
And Shania Twain’s husband cheated on her with her (not at all attractive) BFF/personal assistant.
Nina a Julianne were seen together at the beach last week. I wouldn’t go to the beach with a friend who slept with my boyfriend.

I like my fictional love kept away from the real life drama bc people get confused and don’t understand that these are real people and not the characters they play on a show. You watched it happen with Rob and Kristen, with these two etc.
I wish them the best. It shouldn’t affect the show at all bc Nina and Ian are not Elena and Damon.
Of course they aren’t their characters, but it could affect the show since their body language might be different. I got dumped in an office romance and couldn’t sit near him after that for quite a while because I was so upset; had my job been to kiss him and seem romantic with him, I wouldn’t have been able to pull it off convincingly.
Btw am I the only one that thought that their on-screen chemistry went down the toilet once their characters actually started dating?
I find that real life couples do very little for me on the screen together. She was sparking off Wesley way more this year.
I 100% agree! It has gotten to the point that I’m really hopeful that storyline arc is nearly over. Damon & Elena haven’t had a 1/10th of their original chemistry since their characters got together, but her chemistry with Wesley has increased by leaps and bounds.

I ship lots of fictional couples and the more their personal life stays out of the equation the more I but it on-Screen.
Look at Paltrow and RDJ. I can’t stand Paltrow and RDJ clearly adores his wife. But on film it was great. I don’t ship real couples.

I’m not surprised. I don’t follow them extensively or “ship” their relationship, but they really seemed to lack chemistry in pap pics and on the red carpet. She’s ten years younger and hooked up with him when she was 21? Well, he’s right, per his quote. People change..especially between the ages of 21-30. He should find someone closer to his age who has been there, done that.
That was my thought too. 24 to his 34? met when she was 21???? of course it wasn’t going to last.
I am super judgy of anyone, regardless of gender, in their 30s+ dating anyone 18-25yrs. And when it inevitably breaks up, i have no sympathy because it was going to happen. it’s a cliche at this point. It’s not about bad behaviour on anyone’s part. it’s a fact that humans change alot emotionally 21-30, but especially 18-25. If a couple is lucky enough to find they change in the same direction during this time, then they survive. However, many change in different directions and invariably ‘grow apart’.
Not the biggest Ian fan, but I agree the odds were against this relationship lasting- they were at such different stages of their lives. Anyway, good luck on set- hope they are done filming for a while!

Inevitable. I always thought that they seem like completely different persons. Ian is the hipster, alternative style, Nina is the pretty, conventional type. Like water and oil, can not be mixed.
Their age difference always made me uncomfortable. It wasnt my relationship so it shouldnt matter, but she always looks like a teenage girl coming home from the mall while his smile made him look like one of those predators who follows her home in a white van.
I would never last in a relationship with him, hes way to preachy and annoying.

I’ve heard rumors for a while he is a douchebag which was confirmed by friend who went to a comic con. Apparently he showed up late and was very rude to his fans. She on the other hand seems genuinely nice. Glad they broke up.
