You probably haven’t thought too much about Rihanna this week in wake of the Miley Cyrus VMA scandal, but I get the distinct feeling that Rihanna wants it that way. One mere glance at the above screenshot from the show easily demonstrates that Rihanna didn’t want to attend the ceremony at all, and I suspect she felt like she had to go because she was nominated for Best Female Video. Not only does Rihanna look utterly disinterested in the spectacle at hand, but she didn’t even bother getting dressed for the occasion. She simply threw on the nearest white t-shirt and jeans, which is strange because Rihanna loooooves getting dolled up for the red carpet.
I don’t know what’s going on with Rihanna these days. Just a month ago, she was showing off the entirety of her rack in a transparent mesh top, and she followed up in her usual fashion with a gross AK-47 grill. Of course, Rihanna is the queen of the selfie, and she seldom takes a day off from promoting her body and attitude on social media, but one quick check of her Instagram account and a scroll through our photo agency sites reveals that Rihanna’s vibe has taken a decided and surprising conservative turn in the past few weeks.
Basically, I’m wondering what’s going on with Rihanna. She’s been looking pretty sad lately, and the below selfie was captioned with “#decisions.” Is Rihanna entering an emo phase, or has being exhibitionist gone out of vogue now that Miley has really hit the pop scene? Maybe she’s just exhausted from several years of wall-to-wall self promotion. I hope she’s okay.

It was almost as if she saw Miley’s trainwreck of a performance coming, and did not want people getting her name in the mix in any way for also being a risque or provocative dresser. I think Bedhead is right though, hopefully people have gotten so disgusted and tired of being over-saturated with nakedness everywhere, that we can really return to the TRUE 90s style Miley is so desperately (and failingly) trying to replicate–loose, baggier clothes with a cool/laid-back vibe, instead of this try-hard look-how-sexy-i-am-see-my-boobs/butt/cooch thing females have been doing

She was one of the best parts of the show. Every time the camera cut to her, her expression was priceless. I don’t necessarily agree with every single thing she says or does, but other than that time she took Chris Brown back, I have no reason to dislike her. I hope she’s okay, too!

Me too. It seems she’s taken a turn for the better after the 3rd or 4th breakup with that asshole. Maybe she’s just got so over it and along with tossing him she’s beginng to see the way things really are.
Maybe she is doing everything she can to distant herself from Miley. Especially since Miley has been doing everything she can to infringe upon Ri’s image, even bringing her up interviews.

Yeah, my thought was that she was distancing herself from Miley. Rihanna is a beautiful woman, and that much more attractive when she’s not attention whoring herself, IMO.
I’ve been so turned off Rihanna for her behaviour and attitude, and that Rolling Stone (I think?) interview last year where she was flaunting her love of bad boys just disgusted me. But seeing her looking rather dignified at the VMAs has made be swoon over her beauty once again. I hope she comes out the other side, and that this is a sign of her working out some things and growing up. Stick with it Riri, it looks good on you.
Who cares about her personal life? Have you seen her performances? Her performances are phenomenal and that’s all that matters. This girl can sing and she doesn’t need to look like Miley to do it the right way. I’m tired of people comparing her to Miley. Apples to oranges. Rihanna will blow you away.

This is exactly what I thought. It’s like the Universe is holding a mirror up to her in the form of Miley, and she doesn’t like what she is seeing. Must be quite a wake up call.
I will say this: when I saw pics of Rihanna in the crowd at the VMAs, I thought she looked like the coolest person there. Dressing down is the opposite of try-hard, and it’s a much better look. Maybe she didn’t want comparisons with Miley, or maybe she’s trying out a new style. I like the bada** look on her. She looks a thousand times hotter and sexier with clothes ON, too.

My theory is, that she saw Miley as a kind of mirror. One which showed desperation, stupidity and general lack of artistic value, and she is finally realised how silly she looks/looked? I would like to think that.
She has lost everything she identified herself with. Chris and being ratchet. Noone right now can compete with Miley on the shock and entertainment value. Rihanna needs to take this time to grow the eff up.
That is so ridiculous. Rihanna is indeed a shameless self publicist but she has lost absolutely nothing. She has used the publics incessant obsession for gossip, controversy, a pretty face (And banging pop tunes) to create herself a very powerful brand. Miley has created one pop culture moment that has the world essentially laughing at her and mocking her. They actually couldn’t be anymore different.

The Miley reasoning would make sense SINCE the VMAs and Rihanna started subduing herself before. Miley and Rihanna have been posting selfies and the like for months. I like her real casual look to the VMAs which doesn’t seem to have any real direction in terms of a dress code. You have Selena Gomez in a gown, Rihanna in jeans, and Gaga in a seashell bra and thong O_o

To be fair, Miley’s red carpet outfit was ’80s Dolce & Gabbana. It was also her best look of the night IMHO. Not that I would wear it even if I did look like that, LOL. But it was better design than her stage outfits, by a country mile.
She probably saw how everyone was critizing Miley’s raunchy image and it made her consider changing her own image. Rihanna is beautiful and quite talented, she doesn’t need to expose herself as she does.

Rihanna has never given a crap about what people think of her so i don’t think she’s changing up based on the feedback from Miley’s ratchet show. Could be she saw how pathetic it looked and had an epiphany.
-or- It could be that my dear Riri is finally just maturing. I’ve always had a soft spot for her. She had a really intense relationship at a young age that went tragically wrong. I could see how it could make her act out the way she has in the past. I was that way at her age over a break up and it didn’t even involve domestic violence.
I think she has finally closed the door on CB and got her closure and she’s now 25 (and her frontal lobes are grown in lol) She’s just reaching a different stage in her life and growing up. I’ve always wanted to see her mature and evolve. The time to act up (if any) is usually between 16 and you’re early 20’s. I think she’s over it now.
I really hope you are right regarding the CB stuff. I am convinced she finally wised up when she realised he was using her to get back in the public’s good graces. I don’t doubt that what she felt for him was genuine but I don’t believe CB loved her. He is far too bitter and hateful. I also doubt he could have coped long term, with her far exceeding him career wise either.

She was positively glowing when she was in Barbados. It was really nice to see. You are right, as far as I know she has never taken 6 months off or a nice long sustained break. Even this mini break before her tour resumes she is still working on other things. It is non stop. However, this is what she signed up for. The mainstream pop industry is a very demanding master and an outdated beast. It has very few ‘sure things’, so when they do have that they will milk that cow dry. It’s the reason One Direction are like on their 3rd album already and are consistently on tour and it’s the reason why Rihanna basically releases an album every year. Look at Beyonce, someone one would class as a certifiable ‘sure thing’, her last album was only 2 years ago (It didn’t sell well), she had a baby after that but her album delays have been due to her and her team struggling to agree on ‘direction’. It is taken so long that she missed the boat to benefit from the Superbowl momentum. So you have a massive star with a die hard fan base with a project that seems to be riddled with self doubt. Because basically she is unsure now, where she fits in and needs to ensure a hit.
This is why Rihanna works like she does and is a tireless self promoter. She and her team will make for damn sure she keeps up momentum at every turn.
She had a come-to-Jesus meeting with her attention-seeking self after watching Cyrus’ embarassing display, and finally realized how others saw her.
She’s 25. For a lot of people, once they hit their mid to late 20s they scale back. It wouldn’t surprise me if she is simply becoming more mature.
She’s super famous, she’s got a clothing line, her songs are catchy as hell, she’s got a great big solid fan base. She doesn’t need to do stupid shit any more.
Hopefully Miley & Gags enter that phase of their life soon.

IMO, this whole “too cool for school” attitude is just as lame and attention-seeking especially at her age. Maturing, smart business woman, would love to see her in movies? You guys are really drinking the Kool-aid…She is getting more unprofessional by the minute, she has a terrible singing voice, and an entitled attitude. Not to mention that she is also quite bullying, sometimes seemingly racist, and all around quite dumb and uneducated. Her “empowered,tough woman” schtick is almost as laughable as Beyawncé’s who never had to do anything by herself in her life, not even holding her own umbrella lol. An empowered woman would never get back with a person who abused her especially so publicly, but would have some dignity which Riri severely lacks.
