Miley Cyrus leads GQ’s ‘least influential’ & ‘least sexy’ lists: rude?

Miley Cyrus

As we talked about yesterday, Miley Cyrus turned 21 (with “the gayest cake ever“) over the weekend. The internet is still leaking the happenings of her birthday party because that’s how the news cycle runs. I don’t think Miley will mind at all since seems like the type to celebrate her birthweek or birthmonth. Of course she misses her birthday already. She loves being the focus of everyone attention.

Anyway, the above photo comes from Kelly Osbourne’s Instagram page. As you can see, Miley appears pleased to carry that champagne bottle like a champ. She no longer has to hide her drinking, you know? TMZ says Miley’s birthday party was filled with twerking dancers, The Lorax, and a teepee. Happy freaking birthday indeed. Well besides the burglary that happened at Miley’s house on Friday. Estimates put the haul at over $100,000 of jewelry and purses. Speculation is that her engagement ring from Liam Hemsworth might have been part of the take.

Now for the meat of this post, which is all about a few of GQ’s recent buzz-baiting lists. About a month ago (and I ignored this at the time), the magazine included Miley in two entries of the Least Sexy Moments of 2013 list. They called out both Miley’s twerktastic VMA performance and her “Wrecking Ball” video. Other not-sexy entries included Lena Dunham’s topless ping pong moment in Girls and Kristen Stewart’s everpresent scowl. I think you can guess what kind of list this is — one designed to be cruel and one that features only “unsexy” females and not males. Ugh.

Now GQ has published a list of the 25 Least Influential Celebrities of 2013. The list includes Anthony Weiner, Lady Gaga, Ryan Reynolds, Paula Deen, Barack Obama, Dennis Rodman, and Miley Cyrus. I can see why Deen is on the list, but it seems really unnecessary to put even her on a list with the likes of Jodi Arais.

GQ justifies the Miley entry by saying she’s “basically trying every inane strategy she could think of to rile up America’s few remaining pearl clutchers,” and “what’s sad is that it totally worked.” I’m not saying these statements are wrong, but Miley has been sadly influential amongst young women. So many people were dressed up as Miley for Halloween. Even if they did so as a joke, Miley’s still influencing them in one way or another.

GQ seems to be dragging Miley’s name into the lists because they know her name gets press.

Miley Cyrus

Now for some replays of Miley’s EMAs dress. Because — let’s face it — the girl who “can’t be tamed” been very tame lately.

  1. Kiddo says:

Yawn, she practices her antics for attention, GQ uses her antics for attention. I’m more irritated about Snowden being on the list.

  2. Haley says:

    Did they lie?

    • Anna says:

Well, for one, “what’s sad is that it totally worked.” statement is evidence of Miley’s influence. So GQ is contradicting itself. If those antics were ineffective, they wouldnt bother with her.

      • m says:

People talking about her doesnt make her influential. If she was, there would be a hell of a lot more latex wearing, twerking, people in the world.

      • TheOriginalKitten says:

“People talking about her doesnt make her influential”

Not a fan of the girl but I disagree with statement. Just based on the fact that people are taking time out of their day to comment on Miley’s antics makes her “influential”. Influence isn’t defined simply by copying someone’s behavior, I think you can greatly influence people simply by being on the forefront of people’s minds, generating a conversation etc. Miley has done this as evidenced by the many C/B posts regarding Miley’s choice of dress and how that does/does not impact feminism and young females.

      • Anna says:

        Agreed, Kitten.

Miley’s recent performances /antics – whatever you think of them – have set off so many discussions about sex, feminism, media, race, gender, etc. She’s not quite a wreckingball, but a little spark plug? I’ll give her that.

  3. Buckwild says:

I feel sad for her. 21 and what’s next? Is she ever going to return to some semblance of normal?

  4. eliza says:

The only thing Deen killed was her career, not so with Arias who murdered her boyfriend.

  5. Andrea says:

I always think it’s cruel and not necessary when magazines make lists like that. It’s still ultimately just a group of men evaluating worth of women. Gross.

    • Jacqueline says:

If we need to stop the “ugliest” lists, then shouldn’t it stand to reason that they should quit with the “sexiest” and “most beautiful lists?” The ugly lists are mean and no one in the beautiful lists look like that without heavy retouching. It’s all so stupid. It’s just to sell magazines – they’ll include whomever will sell copy. (Still scratching my head about Adam Levine)
I think GQ is looking at it from a male perspective, in which Miley is probably gross. IMO they’re just telling her to sit down, which she definitely needs to do.

      • mj says:

Yeah, we need to stop the lists. It’s a gross component of our culture. And f “male culture” for deeming Miley gross. “Male culture” is gross. I’m not a Miley proponent but I am a proponent of women.

      • InvaderTak says:

@Mj: there are several gross areas of women’s culture as well. I am all for women too, but some of the things published and marketed toward women is not good either. We should all respect one another, when the respect is earned. Women can be just as guilty.

      • Veggie says:

I wouldn’t mind if ‘sexiest’ lists stopped, but ugliest lists are worse.

Of course they are. They are meant to shame, look down on and despise. With sexiest lists at least some things will go up.

And as for the discussion between MJ and InvaderTak: many female magazines are all about how to please guys, how to look nice for guys, the idea guys have. Guys are generally talked about as people with feelings and opinions. Male magazines either just show women as commodities, make fun of us or have articles how to deal with ‘women bullshit’. Women magazines are much nicer to men than men magazines are to women.

    • Reality says:

I’d take all of these posts a little more seriously if they weren’t on a gossip blog. But I’m sure you all have well reasoned, not completely hypocritical, reasons why it’s ok to read damning stories about celebs but those other lists are taking it too far.

  6. Jules says:

What is so influential about a corporate created poptart and the faux media outrage?

    • TheOneandOnlyOnly says:

Yes, and are her “fans” that unaware that they can’t see this: faux rebellion orchestrated by your corporate minders is laughable, not dangerous – we are a long way from the 60s and even 70s.

      • Leila In Wunderland says:

But how do you know that all of it is manufactured by her ‘minders’, especially since her minders keep changing over the years? Miley has always been ‘controversial’ because of her fashion choices, dance moves, doing normal teenage stuff, and getting tattoos. It’s been that way for 6 years. Her old minders actually warned her against doing the ‘scandalous’ things she’s been doing for the past 4 years. I don’t think it’s all manufactured, although I’m not denying that she has a team. I think a lot of it is her choosing to do things for a reaction, and wanting to create a certain image for herself. The fact that her antics and fashion choices over the years even generate ‘controversy’ and ‘scandal’ show that we’re not as far from the 50’s and 60’s as we might think.

  7. Anna says:

They should do an “unsexy” list for males as well, because I’m sure many people can think of many unsexy things men have done this year..
That being said some of Miley’s outfits have been incredibly unattractive to me but that’s just my opinion and I praise her for wearing whatever she wants… But that Tupac/Biggie dress is so stupid I can’t believe she even wore it.
Miley is influential though and for people to deny that is ridiculous.

And I think it’s awesome Lena was confident enough to go topless on her show and I’m sure there were many males and females who found it sexy, even though she doesn’t have a typical Hollywood body.

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

..but they would never do that because it’s easier to pick on women.

      • Tapioca says:

…and because there aren’t too many guys who gone naked for attention in the same way Miley has. Apart from Bieber singing naked to his grandma, I can’t think of anyone!

      • MisJes says:

It’s in GQ Magazine. That stands for Gentlemen’s Quarterly. Of COURSE the polls and lists are going to be women-centric. It’s written by and for men. I honestly don’t know what you’d expect.

      • TheOriginalKitten says:

I wasn’t specifically talking about the context of GQ magazine. I’ve never seen a list of the Unsexiest Men in a magazine geared towards women, have you?

      • Zoid says:

        +1 to OKit on here…
How completely rude of GQ. You never, ever see males being treated cruelly for their ‘least sexy’ moments. Oh, that’s right, because males stand for more than just their sex appeal. Women, however… And I don’t see how this being a ‘gentleman’s’ magazine somehow makes it better? I’d also like to point out that a lot of these moments that were soooo not sexy didn’t involve nudity, or even sex. Katy Perry’s grill? Taylor Swift’s house buying choice? Kim K’s blood facial? If they’re going to make fun of random pictures these celebs post, or fashion choices, theres a plethora of Bieber pictures I can refer them to.

      • lana86 says:

@kitten – The point of making “unsexy” list is to poke fun on people who try to be sexy in a desperate or ridiculous way, as a main thing of their agenda. (that’s why Lena Dunham bulling is uncalled for imho). Objectively, women tend to do this much more than men. That’s why it’s easier to pick on them – because many of them make it easy.

      • Veggie says:

Guys in the media have tons of unsexy moments, many of them related to talking shit about women.

  8. TheOriginalKitten says:

WTF? Our PRESIDENT Barack Obama is on the list of “least influential celebrities”?
    Be more disrespectful, GQ.

Beyond that, this list is f*cking ridiculous. Definitely trying to get a tweet out of Miley so people will go out and buy their sh*tty rag.

    • Emily C. says:

Yeah, and the first black president at that. Oh yeah, the president of the United States has nooo influence at all. Uh-huh. This is pure trolling. They just wish they were as good at it as Miley Cyrus is.

    • Gossy says:

I gotta say, most of you and the media weren’t so respectful for Bush so this seems pretty hypocritical to have outrage over this.

Also it’s clear they’re just riding the train in this instance, over the national disappointment/outrage over the disaster that is Obamacare.

  9. epiphany says:

Girl is headed for a big fall. All this frenetic activity doesn’t seem joyous to me, it seems manic. GQ did what they did for attention – just like Miley. The kindest thing the public can do for her is to ignore her.

  10. Tapioca says:

Hmm… there are sites on the Internet infested with guys who would masturbate to a brief flash of Barbara Bush’s ankle and they pretty much universally don’t think she’s sexy, so…

  11. paola says:

Now that she can drink alcohol will open the dance to a lot of new shenanigans like DUI, pics of her and her friends s**tfaced and so on and on.
I too think she is the least sexy woman on earth, award that in my mind she shares with Gwyneth Paltrow and Leann Rhymes. i could even consider buying myself a copy of GQ just because we think alike on this matter.

  12. bowers says:

It’s true. She’s pretty, and she can sing but she isn’t influencing young women her age; they like Ke$ha. And no, she’s not “sexy” as in Stevie Nicks, Sophia Loren, Rihanna, ScarJo, and Marilyn are and were.

  13. Sixer says:

Well, if they think it “totally worked”, how is Mardy Whatsit NOT influential?

Typical patriarchy and also – a negative reaction does not equal lack of influence. One would hope it’s the opposite, actually. Influencing others to not be like you is still influencing them.

Yet another reason to dislike GQ, which has pretensions to an upmarket slot but really is just another tabloid lads mag.

  14. Shay15 says:

LOL at the “please stop” at the back of her outfit. Iconically ironic.

  15. Tiffany27 says:

    Fu*k GQ.

  16. klue says:

    How lame

  17. Sisi says:

hijacking all the media-attention during & after several awards shows from ALL the other artists present seems pretty influential.
We might not like her methods much, but she still did it successfully.

  18. Beep says:

WHAT IS GOING ON WITH HER NOSE in the B-day party pic?? it has been driving me insane for 2 days!

  19. drea says:

Miley’s too easy a target for this stuff, it’s not even fun or funny anymore. Who would’ve thought that GQ could out-famewhore even her? The list is silly, self-contradictory, and too obvious in its appeal for attention. The President, seriously? Like the others here have said, even if you don’t respect him, respect the office. Put the President on the same list as Jodi Arias? How the hell is someone like Arias even considered in terms of influence? I don’t understand. Whatevs. I’ve come to the conclusion that these magazine lists (especially the ones for “hottest”) are all silly and a waste of reading time.

  20. BeckyR says:

If Kelly Osborne isn’t on this list, she should be.

  21. Annie says:

They didn’t lie and I’m glad they don’t feel obligated to support her on a misguided attempt to be feminist. Truth is Miley is for Miley and she’s not touching uncharted territory here, so some people need to stop acting like she’s some kind of hero or feminist icon. Madonna already did that 30 years ago and she did it right, keeping a career alive so long as she has. And dressing up as Miley for Halloween hardly counts as influencing anybody. I’m around a lot of very young people at the moment. I listen to their conversations and pay attention to the music they blast when they party. Not once have I listened to Miley. And when they talk about her is not in a very positive light. I know she has fans but she’s not taking anything by storm. When you see tons of girls cutting their hair like her, then yeah, maybe we can talk about her being an influence. But she hasn’t introduced anything that hasn’t been around forever.

Also, if this is a magazine for straight men, why would they include unsexy male things?

I think people are so up their own asses, and this has been made worse thanks to social networking, that they just don’t accept harsh truths. No, Miley is not sexy and no Lea Dunham with all her ~real womanness is not sexy either. Let’s stop being condescending and accept that not eerybody is sexy and that’s ok too. When did that become such a priority. Do you see guys worrying about that crap? We will not advance as women as long as we still care so much about that.

    • Emily C. says:

So it’s okay for men to criticize women relentlessly for not being what they consider sexy, but it’s not okay for women to care. Gee, that makes sense.

      • TheOriginalKitten says:

        ^THIS!

Of course it doesn’t matter whether women are perceived as “sexy” or not, so then why give a free pass to a men’s magazine that is reinforcing the idea that it IS important?

    • Side-Eye says:

Oh god bless you Annie for this entire comment. I agree entirely. And Emily and Okitt–I think you’re almost *comically* missing the point of what she said. I mean, wow.

      • TheOriginalKitten says:

Man I hate being patronized..I “got” what Annie said.
        I simply disagree, that’s all.

    • Leila In Wunderland says:

Miley’s not a ‘hero’, but she has generated a lot of important conversations this year related to feminism: slut-shaming, bodily and sexual autonomy, and whorephobia.

It’s true that Madonna, through her career and interviews, has generated many of these conversations before. But I think the fact that so much bigotry, pearl-clutching, and paternalism comes out over the dance moves and clothing choices of female celebrities is just a sign that we still need to be having these conversations. Not to mention femen, the teen suicides over the past several years over slut-shaming, and the reactions to Sandra Fluke last year.

  22. Maureen says:

She’s got to be the most un-sexy person out there. And so full of herself. Her and those teeth.

  23. Laura says:

I didnt Know that Miley and Kelly were friends. Thats why in Fashion Police she never says something wrong about her.

  24. JLo says:

“Least” lists are so unkind. Granted that GQ is sexist and patriarchal but they usually know their target audience. And I don’t know any men who find Miley remotely sexy or have changes in some way because of her.

Also, can you really consider someone influential if the only thing they have changed or effected is the topic of conversation for five minutes (and not behavior, character, beliefs)?

  25. GlimmerBunny says:

The lists are from Esquire, not GQ. Both are men’s magazines, but they’re not the same.

  26. Grant says:

I do think she’s influential (like a flash in the pan is influential) but here’s my thing… I don’t find Miley Cyrus to be especially attractive; she’s skinny in the way someone who starves themselves is skinny (as evidenced by her non-existent ass) and she’s certainly not ugly but does anyone actually lust after her in the same way they lusted after Britney circa 2002 when she was going bad?

Also, WTF is wrong with Miley’s nose in Kelly Osborne’s pic?! Why is it flattened?

  27. Emily C. says:

It appears GQ has just become yet another misogynist troll site. I can’t wait till they go out of business.

  28. kim says:

I can’t argue with anything they said about her. …it’s basically her brand

  29. shellybean says:

Well she isn’t sexy. At all.

  30. Claudia says:

Did they really include Barack Obama, our freaking PRESIDENT (!!!), in the least influential celebrities list?? Sorry he isn’t trending golfer shorts, GQ, you assholes.

  31. diva says:

    I completely agree with GQ.

  32. dorothy says:

I think everyone is tired of the Miley circus. Totally agree with GQ.

  33. madchen says:

The GQ article is click bait and and Bedhead/Celebitchy fell into that hole. It’s stupid as all f#%k. The writing and the list itself is completely lazy. In regard to Miley, I’m out of her demographic but from my perspective she’s all of 21 and despite the attention she garners shouldn’t be on any “list” yet.

  34. leela says:

NOPE. Not rude at all. Catty maybe, but neither rude or wrong, for that matter.

  35. Lark says:

I find the sexy lists distasteful, but I find these “least” lists to be downright abhorrent. Also, putting the freaking President of the United States on a list with Paula Deen is NOT okay for MULTIPLE reasons. Whether one is a republican, democrat, libertarian, green party member, or whatever one should have a basic respect for the office. Also, listing Miley Cyrus higher than a murderer on the least sexy scale? This whole list is incredibly offensive on multiple levels. GQ is trolling and wants attention and clicks, that’s the only thing I can think of for writing such a shitty thing.

  36. Dommy Dearest says:

Nope not rude in the slightest!

When did truth become rude when it’s the truth? Sweet or sad: Truth!

  37. Asdfg says:

GQ has the POTUS on the least influential list? Obama isn’t the best president ever but he is the president and should be respected. How embarrassing. I’m seriously embarrassed for are country.

  38. cc says:

Wow GQ putting Prince George on the 25 least influential people of 2013 list because he’s just “another stupid newborn who cries and sh*ts and can’t even decide on an eye color yet.” is a new low. O_O

  39. Luna says:

Miley has cellulite!!! Celebrities have cellulite!!! The sun shines again in my world!!!

  40. Kosmos says:

Miley is not sexy, but very boring at this point.
