Sam Claflin on JLaw’s success: ‘She never will let any of it go to her head’

Sam Claflin

Sam Claflin covers the July issue of Glamour UK as the magazine’s Man of the Year. Is that surprising? Sam is bigger in the UK than he is in the US. Most stateside fans only know him from Snow White and the Huntsman and as the damaged, devastatingly handsome Finnick Odair from Catching Fire. Sam was widely praised for his portrayal of the heartthrob tribute (especially for the sugar cube scene), but he’s in no danger of running from screaming fans a la Robert Pattinson. Part of this difference can be explained by Sam’s status as a newly married man. Fans are less likely to obsess about a dude that they can’t dream about marrying, right?

Sam looks super curly and cute on his cover. His interview shows how grateful he is for his success. By the way … Sam did read all those things that people said about him not being right for the Finnick role. Awwwkward:

On playing Finnick Odair: “I couldn’t help but come across comments on my casting. They were just everywhere. I started the process thinking I was going to have to have serious surgery to make everyone happy. With a young Brad Pitt’s face, Zac Efron’s abs, Dwayne Johnson’s pecs, and Channing Tatum’s left calf! But it’s impossible to please everyone. I trusted the team that brought you Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss. They had their reasons for picking me and I worked my butt off to prove to any doubters that I was the man for the job.”

On working with Jennifer Lawrence: “She’s this young, talented klutz who has won an Oscar at such a young age and has the entire world loving her. But she deserves every bit of praise she’s received. I can safely say that she genuinely hasn’t and never will let any of it go to her head. She’s an inspiration to me as much as everyone else and I’ve loved having the opportunity to work with her.”

On marrying Laura Haddock:
“Getting married was easily one of the greatest achievements of the past 12 months. To have a wife with such wondrous, creative imagination, who planned every inch of it, made the day all the more special. Every five seconds I find myself falling harder and deeper in love with her.”

On his honor as Man of the Year: “It was a tad unexpected, to say the least, but i feel very honored. I’ll continue to do what I’m doing so as not to let you down! I feel truly privileged to have my name along all the previous winners. Thank you very much.”

[From Glamour UK]

The discussion wouldn’t have been complete without a paragraph about Jennifer Lawrence. All of JLaw’s co-stars get asked about her, and they’re pleased to oblige. Sam doesn’t think that fame and success will ever go to Jennifer’s head, and I think he’s right. But it has changed her in a way. There’s no way that her level of fame could leave her unscathed. I mean, JLaw and Sam gave a joint discussion on how much the paparazzi suck, but she’s still the same person she used to be. You can’t ever accuse a person who talks about sh-tting her pants on national tv of thinking she’s above everyone else.

Here’s some photos of Sam with his wife, Laura Haddock, at Glamour’s women of the year event. She’s a lucky lady.

Well, if it wasn’t the fame that got to her head, then she was a spoiled brat from the get go.

    • eliza says:

I don’t see a spoiled brat at all.

    • louise sawyer says:

What??? A spoiled brat??? What on earth does make you think that she’s a spoiled brat?
You sure you don’t mistake her for one of the Jenner sisters?

    • Lollipop says:

Her behavior at the SAG awards, her comments about fat men, thin women, homosexuals, rape, constant need for attention, etc.

    • Audrey says:

I’ve never heard anyone say that she doesn’t come in and work hard on set.

She seems like a very hard working young lady having trouble adjusting to the idea that what she says will be reported.

She needs to be more careful but spoiled brat seems uncalled for

    • Jules says:

@Lollipop: WTF?…I couldn’t disagree more. It’s going on three years since Jennifer Lawrence became a superstar, and the woman still seems the same to me. I think that’s one of the very cool things about her.

    • Deedee says:

Spoiled brat? She regularly does fundraisers for charities in her hometown, including St. Mary’s Center, a day training center for adults with intellectual disabilities: http://www.wave3.com/story/24016848/jennifer-lawrence-gift-is-priceless-to-st-marys-students
She has never forgotten her biggest fan from middle school, Andy Strunk: http://ohnotheydidnt.livejournal.com/75715994.html.
@Lollipop, you are way off base. With JLaw, what you see is what you get. She is genuine.

      • Lollipop says:

Most celebrities do charity work. Good for her, but that hardly sets her apart. She seems very very spoiled to me. Maybe because of the fame, maybe because she’s the youngest child, who knows.

    • Val says:

      Completely agree, Lollipop…

    • Deedee says:

I wouldn’t characterize her friendship with Andy as charity work; she has been friends with him since middle school. She actually babysat for friends of mine as well. They said she was fun, sweet and one of their favorite babysitters. Doesn’t sound bratty to me.

  2. Sixer says:

Sam Claflin isn’t any bigger in the UK than he is in the US, I don’t think. I never come across him and he isn’t on the radar of the Sixlets or their little friends – including the girls. I like him, though.

PS: He was very good in White Heat, a BBC drama of a couple of years back. Well worth watching if it pops up on streaming services stateside.

    • kri says:

HAHAHA! Two quotes “a YOUNG Brad Pitt’s face” and “harder and deeper” did it all for me. Cannot believe he went there with Brad!

    • miriam says:

This guy is not well-known in the UK at all. I don’t know where that notion has come from. In fact, none of the guys from THG are particularly famous.

  3. PunkyMomma says:

I think he should have been Peeta. It’s refreshing to hear the way he speaks of his gorgeous wife, too. What a stunning couple.

  4. Kiddo says:

I don’t like the cover pose. Itchy scalp combined with that weird, almost-center-part.

  5. Lilacflowers says:

    Yummy!

  6. Aussie girl says:

His a lucky man too because she scrubs up just fine!

  7. Lee says:

What a pretty couple they make.

    • GlimmerBunny says:

Yeah, I don’t like him as an actor, but he seems like a nice dude and they do look stunning (and happy) together!

  8. fany says:

He is handsome and Jlaw is awesome

  9. Adrien says:

Love, love Sam Claflin but damn he looks like James Holmes (suspect in Batman rises shooting) on that cover.

  10. Becki says:

He’s cute & I like his attitude in the interview. His wide is beautiful too!!

  11. CaribbeanLaura says:

he looks amazing in that suit. Not my type normally, but I can definitely appreciate him. Plus he seems down to earth.

  12. Melissa says:

She already has though? Anyway he seems likable enough. Agree with previous posters that he would have made a great Peeta.

  13. bettyrose says:

I’d never heard of him prior to being cast as Finnick, but I thought he pulled off the role pretty well. JLaw shot to super stardom at a young age. It would break my heart if she turned into an insufferable twit like Shailene W. but I’m willing to forgive some amount of diva behavior (if there has been any) from a super successful young person. She’s only human and we all have our bratty moments.
