Chris Pratt puts his own spin on the ALS ice bucket challenge: awesome?

Chris Pratt

These are new photos of Chris Pratt heading to the gym. This is Chris’ new normal, and he looks fine with it so far. I’ve also included some sweet photos of Chris embracing Aubrey Plaza at the Life After Beth premiere. This post is all about Pratt Pratt Pratt taking the ALS icebucket challenge.

By now, everyone on the internet is aware of the challenge. Celebrities are dumping ice over their heads to raise money for ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease). You can find out more details of the charity intiative at the ALS site. The basic gist is that a nominee has 24 hours to film themselves dumping ice water over their heads, or they must donate $100. They also nominate others for the challenge, which is why this trend has gone viral. I can’t even keep track of all the celebs who have posted ice-dumping vids. There are so many of them. I’ve included a handful of vids bottom of this post.

I’ll be honest: When this challenge first started, I thought it was something that celeb guys were grabbing onto as an excuse to take their shirts off. Maybe that was the case at first, but the trend has significantly boosted donations over last year’s ALS take. This challenge has raised over $10 million.

Here’s Pratt’s addition to the pile of videos. He does not go shirtless (boo), but he infuses the video with more humor than the other celebrities have managed:

See? Pratt fronted like he was going to douche his way out of the real challenge by drinking an Ice vodka and a Smirnoff Ice. Then Anna Faris and a friend dumped ice water on him from a balcony. They did it again. And again. Finally, Chris had enough: “That went down my butt crack!” Yes, I laughed because I’m very juvenile.

Here’s Robert Downey Jr. doing the ice bucket challenge.

Ansel Elgort joined in the fun last week. He was one of the first celebrities to do so. His reaction made me shiver.

Justin Bieber tossed a swaggy nomination to Barack Obama.

Gwen Stefani joined in the fun too. Blake Shelton really took his time torturing her.

Taylor Swift and Jamie King doused each other and donated a load of cash. Taylor nominated Selena Gomez and Ed Sheeran.

Too bad someone didn’t replace ice with sh*t for Justin Bieber.

    • swack says:

From what I read else where, he did not have ice in his bucket.

      • Abbott says:

Can you imagine if there actually was ice in the bucket? He’d either collapse under the weight or faint from the chill to his swaggy sensibilities.

      • wiffie says:

@abbot, the bucket would actually weigh less with ice in it, since ice is less dense than water. (when water freezes, it expands- same mass but takes up more space. That’s why it floats). Not meaning to nit pick. Just a fun fact 🙂 but you’re right. Justin is way too dense, so naturally, like attracts like, and he does water, the douche version. He can’t handle it.

And my moderatecrush on Pratt keeps growing. I can’t help it. Urn d not the weight loss per se, but he just gets hotter. Dang it.

      • Abbott says:

@wiffie Look who is a science understanderer. Well La-di-Da 😉 😉 🙂 You’re telling me famed physicist, Dr. Paula Abdul, has been wrong this whole time? Opposites do not attract?

  2. Abbott says:

Maybe I’m being overly cynical, but OF COURSE Swaggy nominates the President as if they’re on the same level.

    • Allie says:

      I thought the same thing!

I appreciate that this has not only raised awareness but money as well, but I’m so sick of seeing these videos. Why are people so flashy? Why can’t you donate money to a charity without letting the world know?

      • maybeiamcrazy says:

Well, this is the easiset way to raise an awareness for charity as you said. It is the best way for celebrities to use their influence on people.

      • Bridget says:

Actually, the awareness is a huge part of the campaign. People know that ALS exists, but it actually gets very little awareness or public funding, 2 things that go hand in hand. There’s very little research or treatment options right now, and the disease is 100% fatal, eventually rendering the person wheelchair bound, unable to speak, and on a ventilator. For currently unknown reasons there’s a higher occurrence rate in veterans, but it’s so underfunded and under-researched so no one knows the connection. So be as flashy as you want on this one celebrities!

      • ataylor says:

THANK YOU! I hate these videos because it’s like social media blackmail. Either you participate (if you’re a celebrity) or the whole world gets on your case for being an a-hole that refused to participate…you know…for charity.

I mean, there are other ways to create awareness.

I doubt many of the celebs would have participated on their own without the threat of being viewed negatively by the public. I totally buy that some are being prodded by their publicists to participate.

      • T.C. says:

I think the genius of the campaign is making it action oriented with the ice bucket thing and calling out a fellow celeb in public to do it or be called an uncharitable spoiled sport. It gets covered by media and brings much more attention to a forgotten cause. Social pressure being used in a positive way.

      • Bridget says:

@TAylor: “There are other ways to create awareness” – It’s not exactly like the ALS community hasn’t been desperately trying for years to gain some awareness, using every means possible. How can you begrudge them the fact that their campaign (which has been going on for a while, by the way) went viral?

      • ataylor says:

Simple. I abhor coercion. For any reason. Charity and participation in it has to be voluntary. And I’m not begrudging the fact the campaign went viral. That’s nice. But I for one would find no joy or happiness to know someone joined in because of fear of their career going down the drain due to public perception. Pressuring someone to do something they don’t want to even if it’s for a good cause is a slippery slope. No one owes anyone anything. Even celebrities or public figures.

Now I’m sure most people are glad to help and participate, but I can also see things from the other side of the coin, especially since I’ve worked in PR, in artist management and for non-profits.

      • Dancinnancy says:

Amen @ATTAYLOR – many give freely of their time and money without the cameras on them. Forcing them to be public is ugly IMO and I’m staying off Facebook because I’m tired of the videos. Though I think NHL’s Biznasty wins. Top of a mountain with artic water…

      • Josefa says:

        @T.C.

My thoughts exactly. Who cares about the intentions if a good cause is getting supported and nobody is getting harmed. I see this all as a game done in good fun to support a good cause. I think some people are reading way too deep into this.

      • Bridget says:

@ATaylor: But I disagree that it’s coercion. The part that makes it annoying – the blatant exhibitionism – is what has made it appealing to so many. Otherwise it would never have taken off like this, plain and simple.

  3. Belle Epoch says:

Gwen stefani – not the face, dude, not the face!

    • kri says:

I am so glad I’m not the only one who saw what she did to her face. DAMN IT WOMEN STOP!! But kudos for raising money for this cause. And thank you, RDJ, especially. 🙂

  4. Tiffany says:

My fellow bitches. You Tube NHL player Paul Bissonette’s challenge. Worth it.

  5. Talie says:

Of course, Bieber thinks Obama is his peer… sit down, little boy!

  6. M.A.F. says:

Some celebrities barely have any water/ice in their bucket while others get drenched.

How long does this challenge run? Until the end of summer?

  7. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Good for them for raising money. That’s the important thing. I guess I’m just a bitch, but I think this was genius in a way because it appeals to a lot of people’s need to call attention to themselves. I went to the beach this gorgeous weekend and everybody was doing the ice bucket challenge and using the opportunity to make a video of themselves drawing it out, shrieking, hopping up and down in their bikinis, I don’t know. Some of them had done it 4 or 5 times, instead of donating money. It became pretty tiresome pretty fast. But it’s a great cause, so I won’t say it’s too bad people can’t support something without getting this “benefit” for their own egos. Oops, said it.

    • Abbott says:

I’m with you…. interested to see how many of them donated $$$$ in addition to the free publicity.

    • V4Real says:

If it brings in money and awareness for charity who cares about people’s motive. Like I said down thread, my job did it and there were no cameras around. My place of business has made the local news and popular newspaper several times. The benefit for me was seeing my coworkers get drenched in cold ice water. I also have coworkers who participate in the polar bear plunge for charity. A lot of people just enjoy charites that can have fun with while bringing in cash.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I said the money was the most important thing if you bother to read my comment.

  8. icerose says:

Great that it is raising awareness and some money for ALS but there are only so many times you can watch someone get water thrown all over them. I am being quite selective about which videos I am clicking on.

  9. Josefa says:

I can’t ever be mad at celebs doing charity, whatever their actual intention may be.

I still love Chris, but I went to watch GotG the other day and I have to say… him and Zoe were the weakest links. Groot, Rocket and Drax were the true stars of the film.

  10. Jules says:

Exactly. My favorite was Groot…and Drax but Pratt was just okay…cute but he didn’t impress me at all in the film which has to be the most overrated movie of 2014. I know I sound cranky but it’s probably because I’m angry at myself for falling for the hype. It was a generic Star Wars-ish kind of movie.

  11. Kate says:

My mother passed away from ALS in 2005. The awareness and donations made through this has been incredible!

    • Innie Outie says:

I am so sorry. All degenerative diseases seem almost viciously cruel to me. I am always glad to hear that people are working to find a cure or at least a means to halt their progress.

  12. BW says:

I don’t get it. They EITHER give $100 to the charity or get drenched in ice water? Since all I see if people getting drenched with ice water, does that mean nobody is donating to the charity?

    • Sam says:

The article states that they’ve raised over 10 million dollars for ALS research. I think it’s safe to assume that they’re donating. I can’t imagine the bad PR if they didn’t.

    • ataylor says:

Right? I know this is making money, but who’s donating? The celebs? The donations aren’t public. I’m thinking that if there were volunteers (celebrity-wise) that required a minimum amount for them to get doused repeatedly then the donations would go through the roof.

Imagine Kim Kardashian, Kanye or Justin Bieber volunteering for this crap? So many people can’t stand them so ALS would make a FORTUNE due to so many people donating to see them get repeatedly made to look like drowned rats!

      • lucy2 says:

Celebrity Dunk Tank…I think you may have just pitched the Fox network’s newest hit.
Most people I know who did it are also donating.

      • ataylor says:

Re: Celebrity Dunk Tank: *bowing* Thank you. Thank you very much. LOL.

Like I said in a previous post up above, there are many ways of creating awareness. You just have to be willing to brainstorm for a while.

    • Linn says:

I think most stars who accepted the challenge donated as well.

    • icerose says:

you can choose to do both

  13. Altariel says:

Leave it to Chris Pratt to make things extra fun! Just love the guy!

Won’t watch the Beiber one, no

  14. Miss M says:

I am glad that this cause is going viral. But I would like to share some info with you. This challenge did NOT start with celebrities. As far as I know, it started with Peter Frates from MA, diagnosed with ALS. Many of my peers and friends have done the challenge. You have to be nominated to continue. If you pass the challenge , you donate $100 dollars and nominate other people to continue the challenge.

    • Bridget says:

Thanks for saying this! The celebrities have actually been the late adopters on this one, the challenge has been going on for a while.

  15. Today says:

Chris Pratt is so adorable! I just love him. He seems like he never would get angry or moody. Anna Faris is a lucky gal!

  16. lindy79 says:

Hiddles has done it and nominated cumberbatch and luke evans
    http://www.whosay.com/l/jio9353.

    today is a good day

    • Miss M says:

Nice! Thanks for sharing this info!

    • MexicanMonkey says:

He did it in a white t-shirt, and in Slomo.. Today is the best day!

      • icerose says:

and he took it from the front insuring every inch of the front of the white Tshirt was wet wet wet!

    • Innie Outie says:

He actually originally challenged Helena Bonham Carter, too! Wonder why he then decided to cut the end off his vid and stop on Cumby and Evans. Maybe he thought he can only challenge two? Or maybe decided it’s too ungentlemanly to challenge a lady lol.

      • lunchcoma says:

She’s a neighbor of sorts, isn’t she? Maybe he decided to play nice and pick on an old friend and a current costar instead.

    • flavia_deluce says:

That video derailed my whole day. Damn you, Tommy Hiddles.

    • jammypants says:

      A very good day!

    • Dara says:

      Well done sir!

    • icerose says:

I got it right Benny and Luke, So does everyone think that third was his neighbour. Helena is a livewire so more than likely. Getting even for her raucous laughter during Coriolanus. I think she went to it twice.

    • lunchcoma says:

Ah, the lovely chain from Nathan Fillion to Tom Hiddleston, and now the upcoming Benedict Cumberbatch video to look forward to (because it’s very hard for me to imagine him not doing it).

    • pru says:

Bless him for doing it, and in a white t-shirt too!

    • Altariel says:

      Veeeery cute!! Love love him!!

  17. Innie Outie says:

    Hahaha Chris is adorable! 😀

  18. Mei says:

Oooooh Taylor nominated Selena, what could this meeeeeeeeeeeeean my goodness

    ……….looool.

& eurgh why won’t el swaggy just quit everything, we really don’t need any more of his nauseating presence.

  19. Miss M says:

    Taylor also nominated Emma Stone…

  20. V says:

Sigh. I’m going to be wretched here…all of these celebrity could have promoted ALS awareness without being so typically first world. Do you know why I have an issue with this? I’ve seen some of these same celebrities promote water conservation and clean water charities and now they’re wasting water in the name of charity too? I’d rather they tell people about it, donate and encourage others to donate instead of encouraging people to waste water (I can only imagine how this must look to people who live in cities/states that are suffering from drought and water fines)

    • Camil says:

MTE. To be honest, I don’t understand this challenge o.0 but at least it has raised money xD
