Charlize Theron & Sean Penn ‘have been arguing big time’ in South Africa

wenn21344516

Charlize Theron and Sean Penn have been together all year, and I still have zero idea as to the dynamics of their relationship. Charlize pays lip service to this idea of being a powerful, independent, ball-busting woman, but Sean Penn’s history with women shows that he doesn’t really like those characteristics in a woman. Maybe he’s changed. Maybe she’s changed. Maybe he makes her seem grumpy and she makes him seem lighter. I’m telling you, it’s a weird dynamic to figure out. But Star claims that Sean’s old, controlling habits have come back with a vengeance. Sean has been directing Charlize in The Last Face, filming in South Africa, and Star says Charlize hates the way Sean has been treating her:

Charlize Theron is seriously butting heads with her boss…who also just happens to be her boyfriend, Sean Penn! The couple, who are currently filming The Last Face in Cape Town, South Africa, are learning the hard way that mixing business and pleasure doesn’t always work.

Sean is directing the film, while Charlize plays a lead role — and sources say she’s fed up with his constant criticism. “Sean is a different person on set,” an insider reveals. “He’s a perfectionist and it’s driving Charlize insane.”

In addition to interrupting the blonde beauty during her scenes, set sources say the actor also makes her do her lines over and over again and gets upset over her lack of passion. “Sean the director is not the man Charlize fell in love with,” the source adds. “They have been arguing big time.” Cut!

[From Star Magazine]

Yeah, it’s Star, but this feels true. The thing is, a lot of people have said that Sean is actually rather nice as a director and he’s just a bastard in real life. Maybe the mix of business and pleasure has been toxic for Sean. I don’t know. Will we be the first in line to yell “I Told You So” at Charlize if and when this relationship crashes and burns?

He’s soooo orange. Don’t these people realize how ridiculous they look with fake tanner? Mirrors and lighting are your friends!

    • Kiddo says:

He looks pretty leathery. I actually think the tan is real. On my screen (at least) it looks redder/browner than the typical orangey spray.

      • Frida_K says:

I think the tan is real too. He’s of Italian background and that sort of red-brown color (at least in my family) is pretty typical. My elderly great-uncles, may they rest in peace, all had necks the same color as Sean Penn’s.

        FWIW

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Looks real to me, too. After a certain age, if you have tough, leathery skin, tanning just brings it out more and doesn’t look the way it used to when your skin was smooth. I think a lot of older men should cut way down on the tanning, but they seem to think it looks “healthy.” I see it a lot in sailing.

      • Kiddo says:

I think that they aren’t ‘tanning’ so much as not covering up with sunscreen. Maybe the sunscreen isn’t macho, or it’s too much of a pain in the ass to reapply or something like that.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

You’re probably right. Just too lazy to do sunscreen.

      • mimif says:

I never wear sunscreen. So basically I’m macho & lazy and my future face is going to look like Sean Penn’s. Thanks a lot, ladies.

*throws vapo-rub at Kiddo & GoodNames and cries*

      • Kiddo says:

@mimif, I’m sometimes lazy too or not completely dedicated, especially if the stuff melts in the heat and runs into my eyes, then I don’t reapply. Throws Vicks back! Wipes sunscreen tears from eyes with hopes of not going blind.

        PS

        You’re pretty macho!
Offers Kool-Aid and vodka flavor of your choice in conciliatory gesture.

      • mimif says:

Lol Kiddo, thanks for the treats. But serious talk now, I never wear sunscreen because I loathe the way it feels on my skin. I see a baked ham in my immediate future…

        *pounds vodka*

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Oh, mimif, please don’t cry. Just try to find one you can tolerate if you spend a lot of time in the sun. They do feel gross. How about a nice big hat? But even if you don’t, I’m sure you will never look like Sean. Plus, vodka might work as a preservative. In that case, we’ll never show any aging, right?

      • mimif says:

Thanks, sweet pea. I do wear a huge hat, it’s like a peplum hat for my head.

        *bastes ham for baking*

        *throws vodka at Goodnames*

      • Kiddo says:

mimif, Yeah, I am sensitive to a good percentage of the stuff too. There’s one made out by you ( I forget the name) that is a disappearing zinc which I can tolerate better than the bag of mixed chemicals in other brands. It too, however, does not hold up to sweat, in high heat or working out, and I don’t trust any of that getting into my eyes. Since you are in the fields all the time, (I think), you really should try to find a hat that isn’t obnoxious to wear. Oops, just noticed you already wear a hat. Are you sure you didn’t throw the vodka at me..hic!

      • TheOriginalKitten says:

Imma look like Tan Mom minus the children because I only wear a low SPF on my face.

      • Kiddo says:

@TheOriginalKitten, But she smells like desperation and you smell like eucalyptus, camphor (and vodka and Kool-Aid).

      • Bella bella says:

@Frida_K, I thought Penn was Jewish.

      • Kiddo says:

In retrospect, I feel kind of bad about making fun of Tan Mom. I think she is a troubled soul. I am flagging my own comment.

    • Sarah123 says:

Is this also from long-term cigarette smoking? My friends who smoked the longest have definitely gone leathery faster than those who dabbled – or never started.

    • FLORC says:

      Sandy
He’s not fake tan orange. I think it might be the lighting on your screen. Also, he’s had that leather like skin for ages now. That’s something you’re more likely to get from the actual sun.

    • whateveryouwantittobe says:

I think it’s high blood pressure, the face of a perpetually straining curmudgeon.

  2. Brin says:

I’m surprised they lasted this long.

    • Christin says:

So am I. Two giant egos usually result in a massive collision once the new wears off.

      • Gea says:

Well said. He is who he is and there is no secret about. His aditude, temper and reputation didn’t stop her from romancing with him. On the other side as beautiful and good actress that she is , her arrogance is well known.

      • tracking says:

        yup.

  3. adain says:

    going to break up

  4. eribra says:

Her hair in the white dress pics is gorgeous

    • Dani2 says:

It really is, I just cut my hair into a bob style and I was thinking I want to get it even shorter now so that I can get it styled like that.

  5. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I think it would be weird to suddenly have your SO as your boss. Lots of couples work together well, and I think I could work as an equal partner with my husband, but I’m not sure I’d like it if he was suddenly snapping orders at me and pointing out my mistakes. Lol

    • Bob Loblaw says:

I remember watching a show about couples assigned to complete a task together and a counselor who watched them interact and could predict the likelihood of the couple staying together or not with incredible accuracy based on how the couple worked together. It’s not always easy to work with your SO.

  6. Stoner says:

    They’re both @ssholes.

    • Gia says:

Lol! A year ago, I would have been all, “how dare you! Charlize is amazing!!” But she’s slipped recently. She’s done some interviews and made some moves that really had me shaking my head. I used to love her! Now she’s a bit annoying and sh-tty. Still hot though.

      • maybeiamcrazy says:

Me too! Charlize Theron was my idol. Now I can’t stop rolling my eyes whenever she talks.

  7. decorative item says:

Because I don’t pay much attention to Penn, I never realized he was so short. I wonder if that has anything to do with his angry outbursts?

    • idontknowyouyoudontknowme says:

Chris Brown is 6’0 at least and has angry outbursts… Michael J.Fox couldn’t hurt a fly and is 5’4 at his peak.. can we please stop perpetuating heightism?

  8. kri says:

I feel bad for saying this, but I kind of hope they do break up. They might both be asses, but I would hate to see anything physical happen here, given SP’s history.

    • Jag says:

I’m concerned for her child. She’s a grown woman and knows what she’s getting into with Penn, but her little boy has no choice.

      • FLORC says:

I really doubt Penn is aggressive/violent with her son. Not with him or in front of him.

Still, I think there’s much to be said for what kids can sense in their parents. If Sean has upset Charlize or acts cold/mad at her with just body language kids can pick up on this. And she should know better.

      • GUH says:

Sean Penn’s two children have never caused the issue?

The influence of his father Jackie Chan’s son, Jon Voight’s daughter, is unknown.

Drugs, crime, alcohol was Sean Penn children.?

Famous celebrity kids growing up without much trouble right of the well I know the case

    • Paula says:

It’s not the 80s anymore. Sean Penn is more interested in saving lives than punching people. In fact, he recently risked his life saving the life of a man. Of course the media doesn’t want to advertise that. They are still stuck on the Sean Penn of 30 years ago. Move on. Even Madonna has.

  9. ToodySezHey says:

    Quelle surprise. ..

  10. Jen says:

    powerful, independent, ball-busting woman…

Well, that’s Madonna all over. And Robin Wright Penn never struck me as limp and wimpy, either. Yeah, I’d say he has a “type”…

Maybe he likes to “break” them-? Or maybe they aren’t as powerful, etc as they think-?

  11. MrsBPitt says:

Why do I imagine their fights being like this:

    SP: Do it my way
    CT: No
SP: I said do it that way, bitch!
    CT: F – You
He gets in her face, she slaps him, he slaps her back, pushing, shoving, falling on the floor….sex…

    I don’t see this ending well….

    • FLORC says:

If he hit her it would be over. I can see her hitting him, but not her allowing him to hit her and remain in a relationship. Not with what her father did to her mother.

I think they argue and are both stubborn. That can lead into some extreme yelling and breaking stuff, but not scary physical violence.

  12. siri says:

I remember an interview with Susan Sarandon about Robbins directing her in “Dead man walking”- they fought a lot, too…I think it’s indeed a very different situation, he’s the boss, and she is ‘just’ an actress. And I don’t think Penn will pamper her more than other actors- but perhaps she thought it would be simply nice to work with the ‘boyfriend’. She might be simply disappointed that he doesn’t treat her as the girlfriend on set, or that she doesn’t have a word when it comes to his ideas about his film. Everyone who ever worked with Penn is full of praise for giving the actors a lot of space to explore…On the other hand, as a director, you NEED to be in control.

  13. break says:

She’s a mediocre actress — passable, but nothing extraordinary. He might be a jerk in real life, but he’s a serious artist. I can understand why he might be regretting his casting choices and taking it out on her. Not very nice, but he’s there as a director, spending millions of dollars to make a film. She’s an employee, not his girlfriend. Having said that, who are these “sources”? People on the set? Hotel staff? I’m always skeptical about these generic couple fighting stories, when there’s no evidence (even indirect) to back it up.

    • Tulip GArden says:

I really think she is a talented actress. And while she is probably what most would consider a “bitch”, I still like her. As far as Penn, talented as hell but too ragey and abusive as far as I am concerned. I hope Charlize does kick him to the curb or the other way around as long as she gets away from him!

    • siri says:

I was thinking the same. He’s very demanding as a director, but very good at it as well. Maybe, IF there’s any truth to this story, he is disappointed with her capabilities as an actress. He might have expected more…but you’re right, we don’t know the source of this rumor, and I’m sure there are plenty of people who’d like to see him fail.

    • Paula says:

A mediocre actress doesn’t give arguably the greatest performance of all time by an actress (Monster). She also gave one of the best performances in recent years to get snubbed by the Oscars (Young Adult). Not only is she a chameleon, but she has depth. People want to attack her personal life, but now they want to attack her acting ability now? Please.

      • break says:

i guess it’s a subjective thing. i agree that monster was her best work, but i thought that she was pretty bad in “young adult” (which is normally the kind of movie that i really like). to each her own, i suppose 🙂

      • FLORC says:

Monster is a type of movie that is hyped for turning a very beautiful woman into an ugly woman. That’s what the Oscars like (extreme transformations) and that’s why it was popular imo. Oscar buzz brings in viewers.

I really thought her performance was good. Not great.
Take away makeup, a good script, supporting actors and all the scenes that come with a hollywood movie shooting for the oscars. If you’re left with an actor that can still make you believe what they want you to you have talent in spades. Charlize imo needs eerything a good hollywood budget can offer.

      • Paula says:

Roger Ebert was right to call it one of the greatest performances of all time. People who say it was all makeup are being superficial just because she’s a beautiful woman in real life. When men do physical transformations people don’t judge it the same way. Charlize could have been thin and with perfect skin and it still would have been an amazing performance because of the emotions she played it with. What matters is the acting. She was channeling something deep inside her having witnessed her mother shoot her father. This is what makes her a special actress for dark roles. It’s real emotion. Plus she’s just a talented actress. She even got great reviews from critics for her performance in a not-so-great film A Milion Ways to Die in the West. There isn’t an actress with her beauty who is as talented. She’s a special actress.

      • Bridget says:

Paula is a really big Charlize Theron fan apparently.

  14. serena says:

The Penn-dong haze if finally over, it seems.

  15. DavidBowie says:

He looks like something I pulled out of the drain. Yuck.

  16. Micki says:

I try not to think about their make up sex…

  17. hal says:

that’s what happens when you steal Robin Wright’s pet project to help Penn at getting back to his ex-wife as a vengeance for dumping him. I hope this movie will flop as all of their last movies did: they didn’t had a successful movie in years now

    • FingerBinger says:

No one stole this movie. It may have been a Robin Wright pet project at one time but people have been trying to make this movie for years. At one point Jeremy Irons and Isabelle Adjani were going to star in it.

      • decorative item says:

That said, it’s still a slap in the face to his ex. There are a lot of projects he could have worked on with her, the fact that he picked one so close to Robbin’s heart speaks volumes to me. And, I wouldn’t want to be involved in a project that my boyfriends ex was passionate about anyway, it just smacks of passive aggressive vindictiveness.

      • Paula says:

Actually the film became Javier Bardem’s passion project and he begged Sean and Charlize to do it. Films get bounced around Hollywood all the time. Someone was going to play that female role. Why not Charlize since Sean is dating such a talented actress?

      • Xavier says:

In fact The last face was Robin Wright and her best friend Erin Dignam (the screenwriter) loved project for about 10 years. you can search pictures from 2004 with Javier, robin and sean when Erin had to direct the movie and Robin and Javier were going to star.
In fact, Robin Wright was the leading leady in all Erin Dignam films
        Denial 1990 and Loved 1997

      • FingerBinger says:

@Xavier Not true. Erin Dignam was working with Isabelle Adjani on this project as far back as 1998. http://www.jeremy-irons.com/news/archive/12.html

  18. Pager90 says:

I love Charlize, she’s a talented and seems like a well respected lady in the industry and even her press has never been bad except for recent tabloid crap. I never read anything bad about her except recently ,which seemed greatly exaggerated.
A eye roll does not a make a bad person. I didn’t get the hate over that. It was kind of silly, the fuss over it.

Now ,Sean Penn I’ve read a lot of negative things about from his years with his ex wife. He doesn’t sound like picnic. Maybe Charlize figures she doesn’t need it.

  19. BooBooLaRue says:

Wow her face is jacked in that 2nd photo – shades of Meg Ryan.

    • Paula says:

Lol at judging a photo that was posted with her face in the middle of an awkward expression. Meg Ryan? You have to be joking. Girl has the prettiest face in the business. People would kill to have a face that beautiful.

    • holly hobby says:

That’s what I came in here to say. I don’t know if that picture (black dress) predates the white one but she doesn’t look like herself. Fish lips.

  20. Paula says:

Star magazine is about as reliable as Lindsay Lohan passing a drug test. Charlize Theron just appeared in the most beautiful Dior promo, but of course gossip mongers only report the negative. Just like they reported that fake story about Sean Penn’s kids not liking her, but didn’t report on the follow up when Penn’s daughter raved about how happy she is that her father is with Charlize.

I get it. People want to hate on the woman who is probably more beautiful and talented than their favorite actress. A beautiful, strong woman who intimidates people will forever be the subject of false rumors and hate. Katharine Hepburn and Ava Gardner experienced it. Today it’s Charlize Theron and Angelina Jolie.

As for people constantly claiming that Charlize Theron has a bad reputation. Where do you get that from? Lainey gossip? Lainey who is obsessed with Gwyneth Paltrow. People who actually know Charlize all describe her as cool, witty, and like one of the guys.

  21. decloo says:

They remind me of Boris and Natasha.

  22. manta says:

Gena Rowlands probably gave some of my favorite performances by an actress under the direction of her husband John Cassavetes. They did it several times, sometimes acting together, using the couple’s money and house to shoot. They managed to have a more than 30 years marriage, and from what I read about them a very healthy relationship.

Kevin Bacon directed Kyra Sedgwick in his only film Loverboy and in a couple of episodes of The Closer, and if I remember correctly, she actually said that having him as her “boss” was a really positive experience.
I think it really depends on the dynamic of the couple.

  23. GUH says:

Everyone has different opinions, differences in the way work can also fight.

Especially when you work with couples or lovers can be more sensitive and private parts should be distinguished,

In particular, the whole movie is responsible for commanding the gun Director, he will endure the responsibility and pressure to heavy.

And if you’re a member, together with the Director, as more pressure is heavy. ‘

“This will be Penn and Pohlad’s fourth collaboration. They previously worked together on Into the Wild, which garnered two Oscar noms. Pohlad also produced Terence Malick’s Oscar-nominated Tree Of Life, which Penn narrated and starred, as well as Fair Game. Of course Pohlad was one of the producers of this year’s Best Picture winner 12 Years A Slave. Penn, Theron, Bardem and Pohlad are all Oscar winners.”

  24. GUH says:

I think a humanist with a love story, the film is an attempt for an Oscar bites.

Of course there is a possibility to be evaluated as a mediocre movie.

  25. Paloma says:

The newness has worn off and too much together time.

  26. GUH says:

Susan Sarandon about Robbins directing her in “Dead man walking=Susan Sarandon Oscar winner

Gena Rowlands direction of her husband John Cassavetes With one or two films nominated for Oscars twice

  27. TheCountess says:

Where’s Grumpy Cat and the “Good” image when you need it?

  28. MSat says:

    Shocker!

    Man, Spicoli is looking BLOATED.

  29. Godwina says:

Urk, they just look so WRONG together. The more time goes by, even. Weirdness.

    • cef says:

I think Sean Penn is Clint Easton wood directed the series.
Sean gives him a very mediocre than females the same gorgeous Charlize women is needed.
His genius talent for getting more light

  30. Ravendaughter says:

    Run, Charlize, run!

  31. A says:

He abused his exes, Madonna most notably. She grew up in an abusive home where her mother had to shoot her father in self defense.

Sadly, these unhealthy backgrounds likely caused the attraction they have for one another….on some level they each sense something familiar that feels like a spark. Someone who grew up in such an unhealthy environment cannot always trust feelings of intense attraction to another individual.

    • Bob Loblaw says:

As I recall, and I’m old enough to remember, Madonna gave as good as she got. They had a volatile and passionate relationship and it ended. People seem to think Sean is a wife beater but I notice Madonna isn’t out there saying that and she lived through it. I don’t think tabloid stories are anything to go by, we don’t know what these people are like behind closed doors and gossips rags just make stuff up to sell magazines.

  32. Tyne says:

I think that both of them are really not nice or genuine people in real life and as such reach far to perpetuate the myth that helping the more disadvantaged people (read: black) will make them more endearing in real life. Sooner or later your true colors show and as the old adage goes, where there is smoke, so a fire burns.
