Michael Keaton is not jealous of Batfleck: ‘Why? Because I’m Batman’

Michael Keaton

I truly hope Michael Keaton wins an Oscar this year for his role as Riggan Thomson in Birdman. He’s received awards buzz since the film hit festivals, and he’s up for a Golden Globe and a SAG. There are plenty of deserving actors and great performances this year, but people love a comeback. Keaton has a new interview with The Shortlist. He promises that he’ll give a “weeping, gushing, phony, obnoxious” speech if he wins. Girl, you know you wanna see that happen.

This is a fun interview. Keaton claims that he’s not jealous of Ben Affleck playing the Batman role, but there is some delicious shade in his answer. Not necessarily towards Batfleck but towards all of the other Batdudes. Keaton previously said it’s not hard to play Batman these days, and he doubles down on that statement. He also considers himself the only “real” Batman. I gave him the benefit of the doubt last time, but I think these answers are a little shade-y. You tell me:

On his Riggan character in Birdman: “He’s so f***ing annoying. He’s such a whiner — actually, it’s not that he’s a whiner; he’s just so needy. But then I didn’t relate to the character I played in Desperate Measures. I was going to say [I didn’t relate to my character in] Clean And Sober, but to some degree everybody’s probably got some sort of addiction. For a long time I had an addiction to going running. But I don’t relate to Pacific Heights, you know? I guess I don’t relate to Riggan’s personality type.”

On running through Times Square in his boxers: “Fun, because it was so f***ing crazy. Then, honestly, what happens is that it quickly becomes very not crazy. Once you’re in your character mood, you’re this guy and weirdly you go: ‘OK, I’m in my underwear, and I don’t want that to make me look really uncomfortable.’ You just think about him, how desperate he is and how he’s trying to hold his dignity together.”

On the film’s unflattering shots: “It’s purposely not flattering. People say I look like that because obviously I do, but it’s not that hard to make someone look bad. I like it. I’ve done this before. Beetlejuice isn’t the most attractive dude in the world. Dogberry [in Much Ado About Nothing] isn’t either. But I like when you get to have teeth. It feels like more work to be well coiffed and made to look handsome, because I have to be careful about what I do. You have to be willing to make yourself unflattering. You make your eyes look tired. You look horrible. It’s really freeing because you just go, ‘OK, take all your clothes off in Times Square.’ Then, of course, you see yourself and go: ‘Woah, dude, I think I’ve gone a little too far.”

Is he afraid of having a gushy Oscar speech? [Laughs] “No, I think weeping and gushing is cool. I see a totally phony, gushing, pandering, obnoxious, long, vomiting, spewing type of speech.”

On superhero movies: “Tim [Burton] changed, or started, everything. And I’m proud of the choice I made, in terms of how to play Batman. It’s probably easier now because Tim paved the way, and if I did anything to pave the way, I’m proud of that, too. I’ve never seen [a superhero movie] beginning to end. Oh actually, I saw the first Spider-Man — I thought that was really good. You can step into it more easily now, is my guess. Technically, [superhero movies] do everything for you. They create a world where all you’ve basically got to do is show up, not f*** it up too much and you’ll come off OK.

Does he share Christian Bale’s jealousy of Batfleck? “No. Do you know why? Because I’m Batman. I’m very secure in that.”

[From The Shortlist]

This is hilarious. The Batfleck casting ruffled some former Bat feathers. Christian Bale admitted how hestared into nothing for 30 minutes,” which (as some of you pointed out) was definitely shade against Ben’s acting and not cool. (By the way, Exodus boycott may have worked.) Do these grown men realize they’re acting like teenagers over a superhero role? In Keaton’s defense, a lot of people gave him grief as he filmed the first Batman. He was seen as a comedic actor, and no one thought he could play “serious.” So it makes sense that Keaton would feel a little protective of the role. It’s still funny.

I love him, that’s definitely shade, and I don’t care, it made me laugh. He’s amazing.

    • Brandii says:

Hmmm. I wonder how many of us would be laughing if it were say Michelle Phieffer declaring that she IS catwoman. Sure shes probably the best catwoman ever but its really bad form to cling to a character who is now played by someone else, even as a lame joke. Boys really do get away everything.

      • elo says:

I don’t know Brandi, if Pfeiffer were to say that I would be inclined to agree, even more so than Keaton. To date no one has played cat woman like her and I don’t think she would receive much criticism or shade for saying something everyone pretty much knows to be true.

      • Mia V. says:

She doesn’t have to say she was purrrfect as Catwoman, we all know.

      • Brandii says:

Elo I want to live in this alternate universe of yours where Pfeiffer wouldnt be ripped to shreds for saying stuff like Keaton says however true.

      • noway says:

Did you see the Michael Keaton Batman movies? The reason I ask is “I’m Batman” kind of an iconic line and part in his Batman movie. I don’t remember Bale ever using it, although he may have but it didn’t have the same impact, but do remember Keaton and his very stern Batman voice using it. I am pretty sure that is what he is referring to, and it makes it sound so funny with all the Batfleck crazy crap now. It’s a joke.

      • Anastasia says:

I would laugh at that, too. And why shouldn’t she say that?

      • Tiffany :) says:

““I’m Batman” kind of an iconic line and part in his Batman movie”

Exactly. I read his comment as a joke.

      • CTgirl says:

Lighten up. It was a quote from the Keaton Batman movie and an obvious joke.

      • L says:

I read it as the voice from that Snickers ad from back in the day. 🙂

But yes, it’s a big line in the movie

      • joan says:

Keaton can throw as much shade as he wants. He’s funny and quick and has great energy. Lately he just crackles.

        I’m so glad he’s back!

    • someonestolemyname says:

I love Keaton he’s so cool.

I think he’s Batman and Beetlejuice.

He will always be the best Batman of the films, IMO.
I don’t think he’s throwing shade really, I think he’s just stating that He is Batman.
The man is just cool. He’s old school, laid back cool.

  2. Snazzy says:

HAHAHAHA Batflek turning grown men into crying babies …

    • FLORC says:

It’s not Batfleck. It’s the childhood comic idol that will be butchered by Affleck.
When really looked at and understood Snyder is causing fans of Batman to mourne the loss of a great character.
Though no one is actually crying over this. Not sure where the crying baby part comes from.

Keaton is correct though. He is Batman. His Batman was awesome.

      • Snazzy says:

        I love batman, always have.
The crying baby part comes from all the different Batmen and their reactions.
Bale staring into space, Keaton saying “I am batman”
The whole point is that everyone who loves Batman is Batman … no one actor can own it. So in my mind, all this commentary is crying. And I love every bit of it

      • Kiddo says:

        +1 FLORC

      • Eleonor says:

I don’t know George Clooney was a glorious mess as Batman.

      • Tiffany :) says:

I might be wrong, but I thought that Bale’s reaction to the Batfleck news was like Minnie Driver being dumped by Matt Damon: he found out from the media. It was my understanding that he had lingering hope he’d be in another Batman movie, but when Affleck was cast it burst that dream.

      • anne_000 says:

I agree. Keaton’s Batman was better than all of the rest that followed him.

And I agree with Keaton that the rest of the Batmans are easy to act. Same with the other superheros nowadays. It’s now not about the character as a person but just to fit into the action stories with all the special effects. The role can be played by so many different people now, because the character’s personality isn’t as important because they’re playing mostly to teenagers now. Keaton’s Batman was romantic and charismatic.

      • Mel M says:

Totally agree, he is my favorite batman and clearly that statement was a reference to the line in the movie.

      • someonestolemyname says:

Keaton is Batman. He’s right, IMO and it’s not about Affleck, he’s throwing that message out to ALL the Batmen who have come after, but I don’t think it’s shade really.

I still see Connery as the best Bond, even though I love Daniel Craig. I still think Sean Connery IS BOND.

      • FLORC says:

        Snazzy
Appreciate the explanation. And i’m not exactly sure what Bale meant by the 30 minutes staring. That he literally did that? Or he was crushed by the casting. Or the direction Batman was going to be taken in.

        Eleonor
Clooney’s batman was Horrible! I cut him from my comment because it would have been too long.
Clooney’s batman was so bad it’s in many ways forgotten in the batman movie list. And as long as Clooney doesn’t remind us he was Batman our hatred and anger will remain dormant.

  3. Vera says:

He’s still my favorite Batman of the bunch.

    • Dani2 says:

      Mine too.

    • Gea says:

I have seen him in Birdman, movie makes funny take on action comic hero. He is Batman, sure he is.

    • Ennie says:

      He is Batman alright!

    • Mia V. says:

They should ask Clooney’s opinion, since he was the worst Batman.
Keaton IS Batman and his pairing with Michelle Pfeiffer Catwoman was the best ever.

      • noway says:

Don’t forget Nicholson as the joker either. I loved Heath Ledger and Bale too, but they would have never had the chance for an update without the original.

      • littlestar says:

She was also SUPER SEXY as Catwoman.

      • girlnbayou says:

Wasn’t Danny Devito the penguin or something? I could Google but I’m feeling exceptionally lazy today. Anyway I seem to remember him playing a villain in one of the Keaton versions. And yes, I totally loved
Keaton ‘s batman above all because he made the roll quirky, sexy and serious all at once. And then I’ve always loved Michelle p (stupid spell auto correct keeps trying to change the spelling of her name so I gave up) so naturally her catwoman was the best.

My stepdad used to go see movies a lot during the 90’s and even though, as an overly dramatic angst full teenager I despised him and rarely spoke to him, he would often bring me an original theatre poster from our now defunct movie theatre. I don’t know if he paid for them of just asked the right person, but his big mean ominous self would march in my room without a word and toss me a poster.
I think it secretly made him proud to see his “scores” hung all over my room.

Michael Keaton ‘ s batman was one of the first. Wish I still had it.

    • Amy Tennant says:

You know, I think he’s mine too, aside from Kevin Conroy 🙂

    • lylaooo says:

i love him… he´s my favourite Batman ! and then is Bale.

  4. Hautie says:

I love that he kept it simple. “I’m Batman”. That is all. Move on, nothing else to see here.

I do hope Keaton does get some love from the Academy. It will make for more fun interviews from him. And keep the whole thing interesting for the Oscars this year. Mr. Keaton is never a boring interview. And I am tired of the male actors who whine and harp about having to do the PR.

  5. GiGi says:

He *is* Batman to a lot of us… I really like him – he looks good & he’s a straight shooter – what’s not to love?

  6. Mom2two says:

Michael Keaton got a ton of shade for initially being cast as Batman. Those two Batman movies, I think paved the way for the current wave of superhero movies. Honestly, I think Keaton was the best Batman.
I am sorry, no leading actor this year gives as brave of a performance as he does in Birdman. If Michael Keaton is not making a weepy Oscar speech in 2015, the Oscars would have screwed up.

    • Dani2 says:

I really really hope he wins but I have a feeling that Cumberbatch will probably win instead. If not him, then I’d love for Michael Oyelowo to win instead, HE was ridiculously good in Selma, his voice, his demeanour, everything about him transformed in that movie. Keaton and Oyelowo are my faves in this years Oscar race.

      • Chatty says:

Keaton is helped by “Birdman” being a legit contender for Best Picture, whereas “The Imitation Game” might be nominated but as a place-filler. It played fast and loose with the facts of Turing’s personal life, and is considered a disappointing final product. “Birdman” is genuinely an impressive piece of cinema, beginning to end.

Plus, Keaton is playing what Oscar loves to reward – an actor.

      • LAK says:

I thought it was DAVID Oyelowu in SELMA? There is a Michael too?

      • Kay says:

I thought the acting was excellent in Birdman but the movie overall was rather disappointing. Hanging plot threads all over, blah ending, and a lot of typical scenarios for art house films that got repetitive.

The place filler for me so far is the Theory of Everything. It was like a Lifetime movie.

  7. danielle says:

Don’t think “I’m Batman” was throwing shade. I thought it was hilarious.

    • Hautie says:

I took it as him being funny too. No shade. Just stating a fact. 🙂

      • A says:

Yeah, it’s meant as just a fact. No one thinks higher of Michael Keaton than Michael Keaton tbh.

I usually avoid his interviews, since I learned he’s an avid hunter (that is just me disliking hunting, I realize it’s common).

      • Amy Tennant says:

        I think it’s awesome.

    • j.eyre says:

It’s his most famous line from the movie, isn’t it? They even reproduce a version of it in Birdman – it’s almost as if he has to say it.

      • rianic says:

Yes – that is a line from the movie!!!! He is such an under appreciated actor! Have you seen My Life?

      • j.eyre says:

I have and I liked it. I also thought he was quite good in Clean and Sober.

I think I started following him on Working Stiffs and I loved him in Night Shift so I guess I have a pretty decided bias.

      • noway says:

Even though he hasn’t been in a lot lately he has a wide array of characters he has portrayed. Great body of work over the years. He better win or I will be sad.

    • Lilacflowers says:

      He is Batman.

    • Esmom says:

Yes, I thought it was 100% tongue in cheek.

He looks fantastic, btw, dare I say hot?

      • Amy Tennant says:

I always found him attractive. I dated a dead ringer for him in college.

      • anne_000 says:

I agree. It was most likely said in a tongue in cheek manner that doesn’t translate as well in print versus a video interview.

  8. MrsBPitt says:

I don’t think Keaton or Bale are shading Ben! I’m sure they both had a twinge of “I’m Batman”, because it’s such a cool role to play. They both brought something special to the Batman character, and I hope Ben brings his own special thing to the role. I love that picture of Ben in the Batman costume….soooooooo sexy!!!!!!!!

  9. mia girl says:

“I’m Batman”. That sums it up.

This man HAS to win the Oscar for his performance in Birdman. He’s earned it through that performance, not through a campaign. I thought he was amazing.

  10. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

You couldn’t pay me to watch a Batman movie.

    • Snazzy says:

lol I love them … but my favourite Batman was Christian Bale 🙂
Either way, the guys just kind of need to let go … it is a role, after all

    • FLORC says:

      What!?
But they were so great! Unless those action movies aren’t your thing. The Keaton Batman movies are iconic!

    • Esmerelda says:

Burton’s movies are fun. They are dated, but they have all these little surreal touches that keep them somewhat watchable: the armor collection, the dining table setup, Prince, the Penguin’s gin-guzzling parents, Christopher Walken in a pimp coat… and Keaton looking great in a camel coat. Truly excellent coat p0rn.

  11. Tig says:

He’s hysterical- and he’s right. When he played Batman, it was pre-CGI-fest era. He did a great job, and I also think that was one of Burton’s best films. However, I don’t think this is throwing shade at anyone.

  12. Catherine says:

I remember when Keaton was originally cast there were comparisons with Adam West.

  13. aenflex says:

    Damn right he’s Batman.

  14. Kate says:

I love love Keaton and he’s still my favorite Batman but Burton didn’t start all of this nor was he the “first” huge superhero on film.

That would be Christopher Reeve as Superman and Margot Kidder as Lois Lane with Richard Donner directing. That began in the late 70’s and ::that:: was the franchise that changed everything. Burton made his films darker and more gothic to illustrate the dark angles of Batman but he wasn’t solely responsible for bringing heroes mainstream. That was Superman.

    • FLORC says:

      Kate
But Burton’s Batman was the 1st superhero film to take more of a comic feel. Not really modern day that Superman had, but another style of reality from the comics.
I took it to mean the 1st superhero from comics to big screen without sacrificing the comic approach. If that makes sense.

  15. InvaderTak says:

What no love for Val kilmers bat man???

Yes I’m joking. I hope mk sweeps this year.

  16. scout says:

    YES, YOU ARE!!

  17. Mindy says:

He IS Batman. There was no real audience for Superhero films when he donned the costume. It’s thanks to him and Tim Burton that Hollywood opened their eyes again to the possibility of making comic book films (after the fourth Superman film, NO ONE seriously considered superheroes for quite some time). The team of Burton & Keaton made Superheroes ‘Cool’ for ‘regular’ film going audiences to see.

As for his chances for the Oscar this year? They are GREAT. There is nothing better in academy voters minds than a ‘comeback’ story – and the film itself has the extra advantage of being about the entertainment industry (think about it, the Artist and Argo did well because it’s about THEM). Keaton is going through the awards season like a champ – he’s giving just a handful of interviews and showing up only when necessary (taking a page out of Daniel Day-Lewis’ campaign book). His big contenders are over saturating the media now and the voting academy will also see their ages as a hinderence (in their eyes, both Eddie Redmayne and Benedict Cumberbbatch have many more years to win, and Michael Keaton has ‘paid his dues’ <- the same reasoning which kept Ralph Fiennes from winning for Schindler's List). I hope he wins… screw it, I KNOW he’ll win.

  18. Esmerelda says:

He’s Bruce Wayne to me… but yeah, he’s Batman.
And I hope Fiennes wins the Oscar for GBH… but I’m not holding my breath, and I’ll cheer for Keaton if he wins…

  19. The Original Mia says:

He is Batman. He was a great Batman. When I rank them, it’s Keaton/Bale fighting for supremacy with Kilmer and Clooney pulling up the rear. And if he’s throwing shade at the ridiculous miscast of Affleck. more power to him.

I would love for him to win an Oscar. Him & JK Simmons. They gave amazing performances and should be rewarded for them.

  20. KatieRose says:

Anyone else remember his hilarious celebrity jeopardy skit on snl where he basically repeats “I’m batman” the entire time? When I read this I immediately thought of that. I think he was joking..

  21. kri says:

He is awesome. And yes, he IS Batman. I read that interview a few days ago, and loved it. At an office meeting the other day, a co-worker stated that an idea I had “just wouldn’t fly”. I stated of course it would. He said “Why are you so sure”? I said “Because, Scott-I’m Batman”. He suggested I should perhaps sit in on group with our patients. Some people have no sense of humor.Michale Keaton isn’t one of them.

  22. 2OutOfFive says:

He will always be Mr. Mom to me! Haha. Fell in love with him then.

  23. Penelope says:

    Well, he IS! 🙂

  24. Alexis says:

    He’s right you know

  25. littlestar says:

Ugh gahd Keaton was just SO SEXY as Batman. To me, he truly personified the character, and everyone else who played Batman after were just poor imitations, Bale included.

  26. Kori says:

I love the line. It’s a direct reference to the most famous line in the movie–‘I’m Batman’. For me, that’s when I really felt Keaton was in the role. And,yes, I’m old enough to remember think WTF? Beetlejuice as Batman?! I don’t think it’s shade so much as confidence and a wink to the movie. I also didn’t think Bale was shading. I think he’s an intense actor who, once he made the decision to take on an iconic role, threw himself into it wholeheartedly, including really abusing his body to gain/lose weight for that role and others in between filming the franchise. He feels proprietary. I think Keaton feels confident in the mark he put on the role–that doesn’t mean shade towards anyone else.

  27. M says:

I do love a comeback! I vote for Michelle Pfeiffer next!

  28. lunchcoma says:

I laughed. This is a much better response than Bale’s angst about the role. Keaton did it, is aware it’s now part of his identity as an actor, and doesn’t need to get hung up about all the other men who’ve played the part since then.

  29. ek says:

As far as *this lady* is concerned, he IS Batman. Open and shut. No others will come close. I love me some MK. Can’t wait to see Birdman.

  30. Ummm says:

Love him and all his movies. Johnny Dangerously anyone?

  31. Korra says:

He’s the best. I love him to pieces. There’s a movie he’s in called Post Grad and he’s just so darn hilarious and lovable in that role.
