Tom Cruise will gain weight to play a 300 pound pilot: Oscarworthy?

Tom Cruise

Tom Cruise has been filming Mission: Impossible 5 – Is Ethan Hunt Retired Yet? in London forever. This photo captures a moment before Tom supposedly almost got run over in real life, but it was only a stunt for the movie. Nobody runs over Tom Cruise, not physically anyway.

Only last week, the new documentary, Going Clear, premiered at Sundance and revealed the CO$ engineered collapse of the Kidman-Cruise marriage. Tom stayed quiet during the discussion. He knows better than to stick his finger into glib Matt Lauer’s face anymore.

The Liftmaster has a different focus right now than public CO$ attack mode. Page Six says he’s on the prowl for a new kind of role. Tom the adrenaline junkie has been stuck in action mode for the past several years. Is there more out there for Tom besides OT Level VIII Scientology paradise? Well … Tom Cruise has never won an Oscar. He’s been nominated three times (for Born on the Fourth of July, Jerry Maguire, and Magnolia), but he’s never captured the gold.

How badly does Tom want to capture that little statuette? Very much so. According to Page Six, Tom will gain weight in order to play Barry Seal, the 300-pound, drug- and gun-trafficking pilot for 1980s cartels and the CIA. Sources don’t know whether Tom will gain help from a Tropic Thunder-esque fat suit, but Tom is expected to gain “a significant amount.” Doug Liman (Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Edge of Tomorrow) has taken over for Ron Howard as director, which is interesting. Liman primarily directs action, but Tom seems to be aiming for more with this role.

Will this be an awards contender? I can’t see any other reason for Cruise to move out of his mega-physical comfort zone. Tom’s been in action-hero rotation forever, and now he’s changing up his career strategy. Then maybe he’ll cash in on Kirstie Alley’s Weight Watcher’s connection. Be careful, or those volcanoes full of Thetans are going to blow from all the awesomeness.

I get doing things for a role, but I think gaining a lot of weight and losing a lot of weight is a really stupid thing to do. It’s so dangerous. Just put on a fat suit, it doesn’t make you less dedicated as an artist.

    • Kiddo says:

I think he’ll do the fat suit.

    • Katie says:

He’s body obsessed. He will never ever gain the weight. Fat suit perhaps but he won’t gain weight.

      • PunkyMomma says:

^This. Tom is never going to ruin his pretty face or trim body. A fat suit and genius makeup.

      • Kiddo says:

Gaining weight to the tune of 300 lbs is incredibly dangerous, especially for someone of his stature and age.

      • Artemis says:

        Agreed!

As if he would ruin his looks for one role. Jake Gyllenhaal he ain’t.

      • Lucinda says:

        Exactly.

      • Lolo-ology says:

I don’t think he would risk it either. While watching MI:4 I kept getting distracted by his bubble butt, because he’s supposed to be pretty fit in that role. I kept wondering if that’s where his mid-life weight gain is gravitating. Some guys get the beer belly, maybe others get a beer butt.

    • Zwella Ingrid says:

Yes the gain/loss thing is not healthy, and at his age, it is not going to come off as easily as it has in the past. I know I’m in the minority here, but I like Tom Cruise as an actor. I like his movies, and if his performance is Oscar worthy, I hope he is able to get one. I don’t care for his religion or his real life personality and antics, but as an actor, I respect his work, even though it’s primarily been geared toward action and entertainment.

      • Dońt kill me i'm french says:

        Me too.
I don’t care how the directors or the actors are in real life.I’m perfect …why would they be ?

      • Ariadne says:

I like him as an actor as well. I didn’t realise this until recently when we noticed that we tend to watch his movies when they’re on TV and to quite enjoy them. He makes entertaining movies and that is part of the point of hollywood, to entertain, surely?

      • Lolo-ology says:

Totally agree. He’s crazy as a loon, but he’s damn good at his job. It’s also commonly reported by those working with him that he really gives it his all, going well above and beyond for every scene. I respect that.

    • mememe says:

      Just hire a fat actor.

  2. Loopy says:

Tom is an excellent actor just like Leo Dicap he is owed at least 2 or 3 oscars.

    • Katie says:

Tom is one character: tom. He’s not an excellent actor. He’s a pretty face.

    • JWQ says:

Cruise is not an excellent actor. He’ s decent. However, he is usually entertaining in his movies, even if he has a very limited range. DiCaprio is the same (but less entertaining), but I know I am in the minority in this: most people think he’ s an acting god.

      • M says:

I also like him as an actor. He was always good in my opinion.
He deserved the nominations for Born On The 4th Of July and Magnolia. He was so great in Magnolia.

      • Lucinda says:

Leo’s early work was better than his recent work. He seems to just play the same character over and over these days. A self-satisfied lunatic. It’s too bad because I do think he did some really good stuff early on but now he is just riding on his reputation.

Tom was never a great actor. He just did well with a few great roles that were edited really well. In the films where he has more artistic control, he is very one-dimensional.

      • Jayna says:

Leo does nothing for me. He can be really good, but I never seek out a movie to see him. I really liked him in Shutter Island. I am in the minority, I guess, but he doesn’t draw me to movies the way some actors do. Now, I will go to the movie if I hear it is a good movie.

      • Sea Dragon says:

^^Yes. Leo was brilliant and impassioned in his younger years and it earned him the informal title “the greatest actor of our generation”. Maybe it’s all gone to his head or maybe he’s just an incredibly lazy guy but I’m with you in that he’s been resting on his laurels way too long.

    • unmadebed says:

Tom Cruise, as the misogynistic motivational speaker with a tortured heart, in the film Magnolia should have won an Oscar. In general, I love his passion, intensity and, some may say, insanity. He has his opinions, but he’s, basically, harmless. Without people like that, what a bore This would be!

      • doofus says:

        “but he’s, basically, harmless”

        tell that to Nazanin Boniadi.

      • SpookySpooks says:

I think Tom’s a good actor too. As for Leo, apart from his role in Gilbert Grape, he never impressed me much.

      • Dońt kill me i'm french says:

        He’s so good in Magnolia

      • Sea Dragon says:

        “but he’s, basically, harmless.”

Ugh. Tell that to the thousands of people that have joined scientology over the years in part because they were inspired by him. Scientology, the money grubbing, spirit sucking cult that forces their most dedicated to endure hard labor when they’ve fallen out of line or questioned authority.
The dangerous cult that employs the most sinister tatics and manipulations to keep a person involved and that has a long list of deaths associated with it.

This is a guy who has, for years, manically endorsed a system founded by a science fiction writer that admired the famous occultist Aleister Crowley and borrowed numerous mind control techniques from him.

But maybe it’s just me and you’re right. Maybe Tom Cruise is just an innocent little fawn in the woods of Holly.

    • kcarp says:

I like his acting too. If he wouldn’t have gone couch jumping nuts I bet he would be getting better roles. Why waste an Oscar worthy role on COS crazy Tom Cruise?

He is super short no way can those little ankles hold 300lbs.

      • Ursaline says:

Haha! Love the little ankles comment. He’ll have to adjust the lifts to help accomodate the fat suit.

But I would VERY much enjoy it if someone with too much time on their hands blended Tommy in his lifts with the Dancing-in-heels-french-guys video

        http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kc17H68IKMs

It wouldn’t last too long before the C0$ police shut it down, but awesome it would be….

    • Josefa says:

I think the only really noteworthy performance I’ve seen from him was Magnolia. But he’s good, yeah. Very charismatic back in the day before he was known as a batsh*t crazy couch jumping cultist. He’s just not good enough on screen to separate him from his public persona, hence his box office flops.

    • Someonestolemyname says:

Tom is a excellent actor. I really enjoy many of the film’s he has done over the years.

  3. Sullivan says:

Ms. Aniston, please give Mr. Cruise your Oscar strategist’s number. Maybe he’ll have better luck.

    • CM says:

Yes, please do. She clearly sucks at Oscar strategy – that should help keep his freaky mitts off the prize

    • Adrien says:

Mr. Cruise should give Mr. Depp his agent’s number. Tom maybe a whackadoodle but he rarely makes stinkers.

  4. Lilacflowers says:

Cruise was desperately trying for an Oscar earlier in his career, then switched to action hero mode. His stuff was always really baity and he had an attitude that he was owed something. Looks like he is heading back to those days.

  5. minx says:

300 pounds on his little body? He’ll look like a bowling ball.

  6. LAK says:

Sometimes, weight gain AND a fat suit or padding are necessary depending on the final look required.

I remember Jill Scott had to do both for No1 Ladies’ Detective agency series.

    • Ginger says:

Exactly. I think he’ll do a bit of both.

      • smcollins says:

That’s my thought, too. I think he’ll “fatten up” to a certain degree, and the rest will be padding and make-up.

And if gaining weight is all it takes to win an Oscar, where’s mine? I should have a mantle full the way my weight’s yo-yoed over the years. Just sayin’…
        😉

  7. Adrien says:

I have no problem separating his work from his personal life. I always enjoy his movies( except Knight and Day). And he’s a good actor. He was great in Valkyrie and Collateral. Anyway, hasn’t he donned a fat suit in Tropic Thunder?

    • Hautie says:

*whispers* I actually liked Knight and Day. But I will admit I have enjoy a lot of his movies.

It was the completely melt down he had about 10 years ago… where he just showed off how batsh*t crazy he is… that made it hard to see past that image now.

And sadly, Cruise has not done anything publicly to make me think that he is sane.

Add to it that Katie Holmes had to build an elaborate escape plan, to leave him. So she could keep her child out of the clutches of the Cult.

It is those little public moments that make it hard to see him buried in a character. He is a character in his own self created daily drama, of a life style. Where he believes that everyone else is crazy and not enlighten to his Truth!

But I will say… the whole story about Barry Seal… is off the rails crazy. I can see why it is making the rounds.

There has been a documentary running on Showtime for the last couple months… Cocaine Cowboys… that covers the whole drug packed history of the cocaine trade and Miami. Which includes some vintage interviews of Barry Seal. Well worth the watch, if you have the time. It is filled with great interviews of the men, who were significant part of the the whole Miami drug trade, from the dealers to the cops.

      • doofus says:

        just watched Cocaine Cowboys…absolutely fascinating.

and I saw enough of this guy and his back story in that documentary…I don’t know why we need a fictionalized version of his story. he wasn’t even the most interesting part of the story.

    • Someonestolemyname says:

      +1

      I love his films.

I still watch reruns of ,Interview with a Vampire. jerry Maguire, Rain Man and the one with Rebecca DeMourney

  8. l'etranger says:

I hope for his sake he goes for the fat suit. Gaining and losing that kind of weight is going to be ROUGH on his body, especially at his age!

  9. the blonde one says:

Meh, he’ll probably just expect us to pretend he’s 300 pounds just like we were supposed to pretend he was a 6’5″, 250 pound wall of man muscle Jack Reacher. because you see, in HIS mind that’s what he is. us lesser beings are to blame for not being able to actualize it.

  10. RuddyZooKeeper says:

At his height & age, that much weight would be a death sentence. You can’t put on that much weight in a “healthy” way.

  11. Sea Dragon says:

Don’t do it Tom. Weight gain does NOT an Oscar guarantee.
You’ll look terrible and you’re too old to bounce right back.
It will mess up the lipo you had a few years ago and will probably distort the look of your torso permanently.
Unless your acting is unquestioningly stellar, no one wants to see a fat Tom.
If you keep to the one dimensional acting you embrace in your action flicks, the movie will flop.

  12. scout says:

Haha.. looks like very thin, very fat, minority theme, Cake like characters seem to work to get a nom. Don’t think Tommy cat will ever get an Oscar ever, but man can try!

  13. BooBooLaRue says:

“Oscar worthy”? No. Just desperate. and not talented and sadly losing his looks.

  14. jinni says:

Well that’s been Christian Bale shtick for some time (as well as many other actors) and the Academy seems to love nominating them for it. Though as others have pointed out it would be very dangerous to do that, but maybe that’s the angle. Actors love to go on and on about how much bodily harm they put themselves through because they were so dedicated to bring their character to life.

  15. Renee says:

I think it’s funny to have the discussion about whether or not the role is Oscar worthy when the film hasn’t even been shot yet.

  16. Josefa says:

… People still care about Tom Cruise?

  17. MJ says:

300 lbs?? That is a huge amount of weight to gain. I can’t even imagine trying to lose that after the fact. I do think he would do it, though, he is obsessed with doing his own stunts and all of that, so I could totally see him wanting the weight gain to be real and going for it.

  18. Triple Cardinal says:

It must gall him no end that Nicole got her Oscar for a serious film that starred top-notch actors.

  19. kri says:

Someone really wants to tightly grip a little Oscar in his sweaty palms! well, Tom can pull the pound on desk/cabinet/wall punch/yelling thing, and he is an established (white) actor, willing to gain some weight. That sounds like the standard formula for some attention from the Academy

    • Sea Dragon says:

Since you bought up the issue of race, it occurred to me that I’ve never seen a black actor ot actress gain weight to win an Oscar. It’s not a common route actors take but am I right in thinking it’s never been done before?

  20. Robert says:

The only film he’s been actually good in was Collateral with Jamie Foxx. He’s been decent but not great in everything else. Say what you will about his acting but he has charisma, screen presence and a big box office draw. The same can’t be said for a lot of Hollywood actors.

    • Jayna says:

He was really fantastic in the harrowing Born on the Fourth of July. I also think his performance in Jerry Maguire was really great, note perfect. Rain Main another strong performance. There’s a lot of films that Tom Cruise has been good in, A Few Good Men. He was excellent in Magnolia.

I think he is a strong actor, even though a nutcase these days.

  21. bette says:

If this was 20 years ago, I would say gain some of the weight. In his 50s now, too dangerous for his health

He’s a decent actor, but he comes from the RIchard Gere school of blinking too much when emoting.

Ironically, I think he and Richard Gere should have done more comedies, they both seem to have a nice comedic touch to a lot of their roles.

  22. Zombie Shortcake says:

Just give the part to Val.

  23. MrsBPitt says:

I hope Tom doesn’t gain the weight…Matthew McCaunahey (? Is that how you spell it?) lost all that weight for Dallas Buyers Club and yes, he got his Oscar, but he lost his looks!!! He has not looked good or healthy, since that role….

Of course, Tom, being a hight ranking theton, he can probably use his mind control power to make the audience think he is 300 pounds, and won’t have to actually do it….

  24. hilda says:

actors should stop pursuing that award because it became silly , i mean if witherspoon, jolie, roberts and portman won it , then it’ s not worthy

  25. Beth says:

Not even Russell Crowe would be willing to gain that much weight.

    • Mrs. Darcy says:

At this point Russell Crowe wouldn’t need to gain much to play a 300 lb’er! Someone of Tom’s stature though, not healthy, can only assume he wouldn’t go near 300 but would adjust to height.

  26. siri says:

In my opinion, Cruise is an ok actor, always trying a bit too hard. I don’t really dislike him, but wouldn’t go to a movie to see HIM. I think his performance in Jerry Maguire was really good. He seems to be a very energetic guy, and oftentimes comes over tense. I think he’s very competitive as well. I hope he won’t gain that kind of weight, it’s really dangerous. No award is worth that. Look at McConaughey, he never looked the same again.
