Oprah’s puppy Sadie will recover from virus

Oprah Winfrey’s new puppy Sadie will most likely make a full recovery after contracting the Parvo virus last week. Oprah had adopted a brother and sister (Sadie and Ivan) from a PAWS shelter in Chicago two weeks ago. After having them for less than a week, both puppies fell ill from the Parvo virus. Ivan died last week, and doctors assume he was the one who contracted the virus first, and gave it to his sister Sadie. Thankfully for Sadie, Oprah and doctors caught her sickness in time, and Oprah confirmed on her show that the Sadie is “eighty percent” recovered. OK! has more:

Oprah Winfrey’s newest canine addition, Sadie, is still doing ok, Winfrey assured the audience on her show on Friday.

Winfrey adopted the cocker spaniel puppy two weeks ago. Sadie’s litter mate, Ivan, whom Winfrey also adopted, died within one week from the Parvo virus. But [Friday] on her show, the talk show queen said that Sadie was “hanging in there.”

“I went through it all,” Winfrey said, describing the symptoms of Parvo. “You can’t get it. If you could get it, I would have it.”

Sadie appeared via a videoconference with veterinarian Dr. Alexis Newman of the Arboretum Animal Hospital in Downers Grove, Ill. Newman said Sadie was about 80 percent recovered after being close to death on Sunday and Monday.

Sadie has stopped vomiting and is now eating warm chicken meat and should be home in a few days, Newman said. Winfrey explained that Sadie is being kept in isolation and even her toys will have to be burned.

Newman said that the Parvo virus is everywhere and that the dogs may have been exposed in the ground in Chicago after the snow melted. She theorized that Ivan, who got sick first, contracted the virus first. She said that Sadie had lost half a pound throughout the ordeal.

“We had some … nights where we thought she might not make it,” Winfrey said.

Winfrey showed pictures of her introduction of Sadie to her audience two weeks ago. During that show she brought out three of Sadie’s brothers who were still awaiting adoption at the PAWS shelter.

“That’s she and Ivan kind of kissing, shouldn’t have done that,” Winfrey said of the day she had the puppies on set.

Shortly after the show Winfrey flew her dogs to California. “Ivan had really one great day playing with the big dogs and playing with Sadie and then he got sick,” Winfrey said. Ivan died March 19, she said. She added that her other dogs were “fine” because they had been vaccinated.

From OK! Magazine

Aw, the poor little puppy’s toys were burned. Do they really have to be burned, or could they just be washed and/or boiled? Of course, I’m not a billionaire. I’m glad Sadie is pulling through, and it doesn’t sound like Oprah is blaming the virus on the PAWS shelter.

Some commenters thought that the shelter should have vaccinated the puppies against the virus before the puppies even went out for adoption, but we don’t know all of the details on that. It really seems like Oprah is blaming herself, doesn’t it? I feel really bad for Oprah, she is such a dog-lover and this must be just devastating for her.

I would be horrified! My Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppy got sick from eating part of one of his toys a few weeks ago and it was devastating for me, I was so scared. He’s my first dog that I’ve had while living on my own, and I felt like such a bad mommy. He made a complete recovery, fortunately.

From now on, the only toy he gets is a Kong. They’re almost indestructible.

Aww. I’m glad that Sadie will be fine.

Don’t be too sure about even the Kongs, Shannon. We had a dog nearly obliterate one before we took it away from him. We were incredulous. After years of having dogs, we couldn’t believe that one had finally managed to do such damage to one.

But yes, they are fabulous, and the least-likely toy to be destroyed. (They just hurt when you get hit with them. Ow.)

um ok who cares its a dog for petes sake

Wow yea. Completely unnecessary comment, but way to show you have a gaping black hole where your heart should be.

ANYWAY. Yes, I love the Kong and those loofah dogs. My guys destroys the ears and legs and stuff and eventually guts the thing, but he loves them so much, how can I not buy them for him?

With all the bad news lately (the economy, sudden death in Montreal, murder in Oakland, plane crashes), it’s nice to hear of a happy ending for Oprah’s pooch. Not that it can make up for anything else (of course not), but it’s heartening to hear good news in sad times.

@yea – we dog lovers realize that not everyone cares as deeply as we do for the little furry things. But it obviously means a LOT to Oprah, she’s shown how much she loves dogs in the past, so have a little respect.
