The Hollywood Reporter has their 2015 beauty issue out, with alternate covers featuring Reese Witherspoon and Taraji P. Henson with their makeup artists. There are profiles of the beauty experts who work closely with celebrities behind the scenes, typically hair stylists and makeup artists, along with a list of Hollywood’s top 25 beauty products featuring far too many lipsticks. Lipsticks are a dime a dozen in my opinion and while I understand that lipstick can transform a look I don’t consider them a beauty product you need to splurge on.
My favorite article lists the top 25 beauty moments of 2015. Apart from maybe Lupita’s hair and definitely Adele’s makeup for “Hello,” none of these other looks would have occurred to me. Maybe if I watched Empire I would have thought of Taraji as Cookie though, she’s getting a lot of buzz for her character’s styling. Social media buzz aside, you get the impression that these “top beauty moments” heavily depended on the beauty experts’ willingness to talk to THR, which is totally understandable. It’s just that only a handful seem memorable enough to make this list. Here are the ones I particularly liked, with more at the source.
Taraji P. Henson as Cookie Lyon
Fan pages devoted to Cookie’s beauty, including tens of thousands of YouTube tutorials on how to re-create the diva’s makeup, have flooded the Internet this year. Why the obsession? According to Ashunta Sheriff, Henson’s makeup artist both onscreen and off, “Cookie is uninhibited, and that is giving women the courage to try new things. She isn’t afraid of the trends, whether it’s a dark plum or bright turquoise eye shadow.”
Lupita Nyong’o’s Cannes “Fronut”
Nyong’o’s attention-grabbing fuchsia lip coupled with a hairstyle that garnered its own hashtag, #fronut, was the ultimate display of fresh glamour on the Croisette…
The finishing touch was a full donut bun, courtesy of London-based hairstylist Vernon Francois, which instantly became hashtagged #fronut on social media — a nod to the natural Afro-feel Francois wanted. “I had been in Uganda, and there were lots of women in buns,” Nyong’o tells THR of the inspiration. The 32-year-old, who’s starring in the play Eclipsed and gearing up for the Star Wars: The Force Awakens press juggernaut, posted a photo of the look on her Instagram, saying, “They are calling it a #fronut. I like that.” So did 76,223 of her followers.
The haunting lyrics, the voice and the alluring eyes — defined with winged liner, thick lashes and pristinely groomed eyebrows — are flaunted in six entrancing minutes of director Xavier Dolan’s video for the first single off 27-year-old Adele’s much anticipated album. “He wanted it to be very much Adele, which is always a polished beauty look,” says the chanteuse’s longtime makeup artist, Michael Ashton, of Dolan’s vision for the black-and-white shots.
L.A.-based brow artist Kristie Streicher had groomed the brows into a signature feathered look that tapers at the end. And Ashton did the liner as he so often does: using gel liner from the inner to outer eye corner for outlining the desired shape, then filling in with a precision-tip liquid liner and winging it at the end. He’s using a new technique for lips, however: “Defining the mouth with lip liner, then blending it with nourishing lip balm into the natural lip tone, which gives a beautiful freshness that doesn’t look too overdone.”
Call it the Cara effect. Delevingne’s brows have inspired the sudden popularity in bold shapes and the launch of dozens of new products and brow bars (extensions are one way to get a full Delevingne-esque set). As Umbreen Sheikh, owner of New York City’s Wink Brow Bar, has said: “Ninety-nine point nine percent of women come in asking for [brows like Delevingne’s].”
Kirsten Dunst’s “It” Haircut, the wavy bob
After months of contemplating a cut, the Fargo actress lopped off 10 inches of long blond hair, resulting in a chin-grazing bob that flaunts her natural wavy texture while showcasing the year’s “It” style: “I had bleached my hair the year before, and Cervando was like, ‘Let’s cut this shit off!’ ” Dunst tells THR.
I used to think that products were not as important as technique, but I’ve changed my mind over the years, especially after I started buying better makeup like Urban Decay eyeshadow. (Not a paid plug, I just love the colors and pigmentation. I have Naked palettes #2 and #3, with #2 being may favorite.) Products do make a big difference, and I want to know what the celebrities are using. I’m really sad to hear that Adele uses Maybelline gel eyeliner, though. I’ve tried it and it made my eyes water so badly I had to take it off. Maybe I applied it wrong and should give it another shot, but I stay away from gel eyeliner now. I would love for Adele’s makeup artist to do a tutorial on how to achieve her “Hello” look. For now we’ll have to settle for the videos made by makeup experts trying to recreate the look and getting quite close.
I love all the beauty looks in this post! They could just write “Lupita’s everything” on the list and I’d still agree. She’s truly a beauty icon, always pretty and classic but at the same time bold and experimental. And even though I’m a tan, blue-eyed blonde (similar in coloring to JLaw or ScarJo) and can’t personally copy her looks I’m so happy that darker girls now have a Hollywood starlet to be inspried by.
Yaassss! And, as fellow natural girl, I’m thrilled they complimented her hair. 🙂
Maybelline mascara makes my eyes water…love Clinique mascara.
Me too! I use Clinique mascara, eyeliner and the chubby sticks for eyes and lips. Love their makeup!
Apparently, I have been sporting the “It Hairstyle” for the past two years. I’m a trendsetter.
I love product reviews. I can’t believe how many makeup artists use Maybelline, though. I don’t think something has to be expensive to be good, but whatever Maybelline product I use winds up all over my face. Their eye products smear and wear off in a hour. Maybe I’m doing it wrong, too, but I don’t have that problem with anything else. I do think expensive lipstick is worth it. Chanel lipstick stays on for hours without drying your lips out. And I love Bobbi Brown eye shadows because the color looks the same on your lids as it does in the package – pale colors don’t just look white or beige on your lids. You can actually see pink or gold or whatever. I love makeup, sorry.
God, so do I. Don’t apologize! I don’t get the Maybelline thing either, I think they’re actually cheap rather than a budget buy. There are super super cheap lines here in Germany that are better quality than M. At least they work much better on my face. And yes on expensive lipstick, it makes such a difference especially when it needs to last all night and survive food and drinks. My favorite is YSL. Somehow I don’t even need lipliner or a brush to apply it and it looks perfect forever. I’ve never tried BB eye shadows but I love Urban Decay, MAC and Tom Ford (which is the craziest splurge you could think of but … birthdays).
I think Adele’s makeup is always on point but it would be hard to mess up that face. She’s so gorgeous. As is Lupita. Great bone structure.
It feels really good to hear you guys talk about makeup, I’m not into crazy bold makeup because I have combo skin and they always look cakey on my face, I prefer I more subtle look: a base, a tinted moisturizer here, some powder there, nothing heavy on top of each other. But I can never get enough lipstick, I love the Nars Audacious line, also some of their Matte lipstick and crayons. I have a few tubes from Tom Ford and Estee Lauder as well.
I LOVE makeup too! To be honest, I am in love with Kat Von D’s eyeshadows. They are my go to everyday now. Such great pigmentation! I have problem with watery eyes and I wear eyeliner everyday, any suggestions?
I have the same due to allergies. I really like Blinc eyeliner and mascara
Never apologize for loving makeup. You have nothing to be sorry for. I have oily eyelids. So Maybelline gel liner slides right off. I use Kat Von D tattoo liner. It’s a liquid pen. It goes on easy and stays put. It does not slide or crack. My favorite eyeshadows are Lorac. They are pigmented with no kick up. I use their eyeshadow primer and they stay all day. I use the absolute best eyeshadow brush MAC 217. Because it doesn’t matter how nice your eyeshadow is if you don’t apply it with the proper tools. If anyone is looking for an eyeliner. Sephora has their favorites out now for the holidays. They package a bunch of brands together for a decent price. Full sized and deluxe trial sizes. That way you can try a ton of product for a decent prize.
Hi I use Kat Von D’s tattoo liner too! I almost mentioned it in this post. It is so much better than other pens I have tried and the shape lets you get the lines just right. For eyeshadow prime I got some free urban decay samples and that’s good but I just put a matte foundation on my eyelids and that works just as well.
Her eyeliner is the best! Its so easy to use and get the perfect cat eye. Yeah, my eyelids are too oily to just use an eyeshadow base. I have to use a primer too. The primer controls the oil. When I’m using darker eyeshadows, I use NYX black eyeshadow base because it makes the colors more intense.
Oily lids used to drive me nuts but one word: NARS. Their pro prime base is the BOMB.
I can’t use Maybelline either. Their eye makeup makes my eyes water and ends up all over my face, as you said; their face products make me break out. I came to cosign what several people below said about Kat von D tattoo liner–that stuff is AMAZING. I LOVE liquid liner and I am normally against the “pen” type liners, but I got this one as a sample from Sephora and have bought several more full-size ones since. And yes, Chanel lipstick is the stuff. I’ve never tried anything from Bobbi Brown, but that may have to be my next purchase. 😀
I think I have a Bobbi Brown gel. It’s the only way I wear eyeliner now as moving to a hot climate means pencil liner just slides right off your eyes. I love the Sephora brand mascara as it looks natural in brown, doesn’t clump and makes your lashes look thick but not spidery. Maybe I’ll buy a more expensive brow powder since I use a cheap powder (usually eye shadow) + angled brush on my brows and its tends to smudge off within a few hours.
I hate it when women are reduced to some total of their body parts and make up. Overtly Photoshopped images and make up that models and movie stars[everyone of the pics posted] do has created unrealistic exceptions from women and done a disservice to woman empowerment. Women instead of perusing intellectual pursuits have fallen prey beautifying themselves and losing out to men intellectually.
These women are celebrities, whether we want to admit it or not, their looks play a big part on how they are perceived by the media and public. That said, a beauty talk does not make a woman stupid. I am smart, and love pretty clothes and makeup. I am all for women empowerment, but women have worn cosmetics since the beginning of age. Yes the beauty culture can put pressure on a woman to look a certain way, but that usually comes from a much more rooted self-esteem issue.
I love the Urban Decay Naked palettes too! I use the darkest shadow as an eyeliner a lot.
Cookie’s look on Empire is always changing, and always interesting. I like all the other looks featured here too.
My eyes can only stand 2 eyeliners: Lancome’s pencil liner and Chanel’s gel liner/shadow (you apply it with a small brush that can be cleaned). Anything else and my eyes burn and water.
My favourite lipstick is a Marc Jacobs. I got it through my VIB Sephora Rewards and have been buying it since. It stays on for hours and you can make it darker/lighter to fit the ocassion without it losing its’ touch of colour.
Revlon has good makeup, but I wouldn’t call it cheap either.
I love the pixiwoo videos. The real techniques brushes are the best!
I love the pixiwoo videos too! I was contemplating getting a set of their brushes. Good to hear you like them!
I wish I had the courage to go huge on the eyeliner like Adele. She is gorgeous with or without makeup, but the kick ass eyeliner plays up her features so well.
I like all of the ones you’ve listed. Yes, even Cara’s eyebrows (I have bushy ones myself, and they’re my favorite part of my face).
Love Lupita’s hair- very pretty. And Adele is timeless with her beauty.
Adele is so damn beautiful. I think she could wear her makeup a la Divine from the John Waters films and still look beautiful.
I know it doesn’t matter what I think, but I really don’t get what cara delavigne has
@Celebitchy: I’ve got the eye combo to achieving the Adele look down to a T (or at least this is what works for me) that I’m sharing. Fellow Celebitches, give it a try if you want!
Start with Chanel’s eye palette #14 Mystic Eyes. Yes it’s pricey but it goes a long way and achieves that look where the inner corner seems light and matte, while the outer shading contrasts juuuuust enough. It’s really similar to the contrast Adele does, and doesn’t have a lot of shimmer, which is key. I ignore the grey colour in it, and just focus on the pinkish (comes off as more neutral) for all-over the lid and the two browns to contour. It kinda reminds me of that sixties eyelook that Adele is doing. Get the palette anyways because honestly it’s the only one I’ve ever used that I get a lot of comments on and people who buy it love.
For a thick black eyeliner that’s more matte than shiny, I use Estee Lauder Double Wear eyeliner gel. Getting this brush from Sephora makes the application so easy: Probent liner brush #23. I think the key is to have something more on the matte side for both shadow and liner. Even without a primer, they both stay on all day, which says a lot about what you’re paying for. I also have very sensitive eyes and allergies (so watery eyes often) and this is some of the only stuff that works.
For the lipstick, I agree with other posters that Chanel has amazing matte lipsticks which don’t dry out the lips very much. But for this look, the Makeup Forever Rouge Artist Intense lipsticks are FANTASTIC. They have 4 or 5 matte neutrals that, when applied, dry the way Adele’s lipstick does. They’re not shiny, more on the matte side, but not as dry as a regular matte lipstick, and don’t require a lining your lips if you’re feeling like that’s too much work. A friend who works in the luxury industry gave me some free lip stuff from Makeup Forever and I really was amazed. But that’s also how I’ve experimented with different stuff to get the look right! Lesson here today folks is: get your friends in their industry to give you free samples! Hope this helps!
