2016 Oscar nominations: who got recognized & who got snubbed?

wenn23344374

Another exciting year of Oscar nominations. Sam Smith and The Weeknd will perform at the Oscars!! They both got nominated in Best Song. As for the rest of it… there are some big surprises and big snubs. We have some real races going on in the acting categories. And I really don’t believe that The Revenant has Best Picture/Best Director locked up, actually. Leo might have the Best Actor race locked down, but everything else feels wide open. Here are the big nominations, and you can see the full list here.

Best Picture:
The Big Short
Bridge of Spies
Brooklyn
Mad Max: Fury Road
The Martian
The Revenant
Room
Spotlight

Best Director:
Adam McKay, The Big Short
Lenny Abrahamson, Room
Alejandro Innaritu, The Revenant
Tom McCarthy, Spotlight
George Miller, Mad Max: Fury Road

Best Actor
Bryan Cranston, Trumbo
Matt Damon, The Martian
Leonardo DiCaprio, The Revenant
Michael Fassbender, Steve Jobs
Eddie Redmayne, The Danish Girl

Best Actress
Cate Blanchett, Carol
Brie Larson, Room
Jennifer Lawrence, Joy
Charlotte Rampling, 45 Years
Saoirse Ronan, Brooklyn

Best Supporting Actor
Christian Bale, The Big Short
Tom Hardy, The Revenant
Mark Ruffalo, Spotlight
Sylvester Stallone, Creed
Mark Rylance, Bridge of Spies

Best Supporting Actress
Jennifer Jason Leigh, The Hateful Eight.
Rooney Mara, Carol
Rachel McAdams, Spotlight
Alicia Vikander, The Danish Girl
Kate Winslet, Steve Jobs

The Snubs: No Idris Elba for Beasts of No Nation, which was completely shut out of the big nominations. No Aaron Sorkin for the Steve Jobs script, which made me happy. No Michael Shannon for supporting actor in 99 Homes, and no Jacob Tremblay for Room, although Room got way more nominations than I was expecting. In Best Director, Ridley Scott didn’t get nominated for The Martian, which is INSANE, although he did get nominated as a producer. What else? No Kristen Stewart in supporting. No Johnny Depp for Best Actor for Black Mass. No Helen Mirren for anything. No Straight Out of Compton, Trumbo, Carol or The Hateful Eight for Best Picture.

Surprise nominations: it’s great to see Charlotte Rampling get some major love, because she’s been shut out of so many major awards. Tom Hardy’s nomination is a huge surprise, mostly because he hasn’t been nominated for anything before this because all of the money has gone into Leo’s campaign. It’s great to see Ruffalo get a nom, because he had the “showy” role in Spotlight, more so than any other actor in that film. And of course Vikander’s hustle paid off. Seriously, who’s going to win Best Supporting Actress? I really don’t know. Supporting Actor is wide open too!

It’s Batman vs. Bane in the Best Supporting Actor race…

    • mia girl says:

      True!
Wasn’t Bane the worst? I hated that stupid voice.

    • NUTBALLS says:

Thrilled to see Christian get recognized. He deserves it more than Hardy, for sure. I’m torn between the rest of them as I enjoyed all of their performances. That’s going to be a hard category to predict.

      • alex_r says:

So happy about Christian and he hasn’t campaigned a lot. They are all so good in that category. I’d be ecstatic if CB won but anyone can win.

      • noway says:

You do know Christian has an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for the Fighter in 2011. Yes he is a very good actor and deserves more though. I think Mark Ruffalo is a good actor that gets ignored a lot for his performances, so I was happy to see him nominated. I think though it will be Sylvester Stallone with the nostalgia vote.

      • NUTBALLS says:

noway, I’d be happy with Ruffalo or Stallone winning for the exact same reasons.

      • Lisa says:

Bale also was Oscar nominated for American Hustle.

      • Amberica says:

Bale has also won an Academy Award for The Fighter.

      • Ally8 says:

I do not care for Bale’s voice at all. It sounds artificially deep, it’s shouty and his accent sounds like an English person putting on a bad American accent. Distracting in almost every part he plays.

He was adorable as hell in Empire of the Sun, though. Still one of my favorite movies. Should have won for that — amazing performance. And a remarkably non-mawkish portrayal of a child’s story for Spielberg.

    • Lilacflowers says:

      With the Incredible Hulk

    • Nic919 says:

Even though Idris Elba should have been in the best supporting category, I think that Stallone has this. The instant standing ovation for him at the Globes shows how much the industry likes him. I don’t think anyone else has a chance at winning, despite the performances being good.
Bale won recently so he is the least likely to wn.

    • sam says:

This will be Rocky vs Rylance. The sentimental fave vs the talented Brit thesp. The others are running far second. Bale was good in TBS but I thought Carrell had more impact imo and would have liked to have seen him here. Idris or the little boy from Room would have been great to see here as well.

Idris’s snub can be put down more to insular AMPAS members feeling uncomfortable with the advent of Netflix and other ‘non-traditional’ outlets rather than anything personal or about his performance (which was supposedly phenomenal – didn’t see BoNN yet).

      • misery chick says:

@ SAM~x 1,000 about Steve Carell in TBS. His final (I believe) scene, when he was sitting outside at a table, on the phone trying to decide whether or not to “SELL”-so many emotions were expressed on both his face & through his body. Terrific performance. Would have LOVED to see him be nominated!

  2. Lucy says:

While overshadowed by a great loss, this is still exciting. And I’m very happy for Sam and The Weeknd!!!

    • Liv says:

I’m glad that Rachel got nominated! And I really hope they honor Alan Rickman with an Oscar.

      • Kimmy says:

Right? I bet Lindsay Lohan is in a mood this morning!

But really, 2015 has been a great year for Rachel….South Paw, True Detective ( wasn’t good, but not her fault), Spotlight, and getting cast in a Marvel film.

      • Grant says:

So excited for Rachel. I’ve always thought she was a great actress with a lot of range. She’ll always be Regina George to me!

  3. Tiffany27 says:

They would nominate Jennifer Lawrence for taking a sh*t on the toilet. Good Lord. Joy was terrible. Ah well. Shout out to Rachel McAdams though!

    • Lindy79 says:

      Its infuriating

      • V4Real says:

I will be so disappointed if JLaw wins. I’m kind of tired of her and Cate being nominated. I’m pulling for the underdogs such as Saoirse but I bet they already know who they are going to give it to. It’s probably bought and paid for.

      • Val says:

        It really is, ugh.

    • GlimmerBunny says:

      😀

I like her but yeah, she’s reaching Brangelina territory where they would literally nominate her for anything just to get her to show up.

      • BossyKat says:

Really @Glimmerbunny? I disagree on several levels: first one being I don’t think people view J-Law as a TV ratings magnet. Yes she’s been in moneymaking teen franchises, but then so has Chris Hemsworth and Emma Watson. Doesn’t make them ‘Brangelina,’ either. If it was just about ratings they’d nominate Beyonce, or a Kardashian or ‘Poor sad Jen Aniston,’ who sells rags because she’s poor sad Jen. Kstew could have given them a ratings bump with her hardcore still Twi-lit fans yet they didn’t nom her either.

Secondly, other than the silly comedy Golden Globe nod for The Tourist a few years back, there really has been no consensus point of view that somehow Angelina (or Brangelina as you strangely call just her ) didn’t/doesnt deserve her Oscars and Oscar nods, or any of her other recent noms for films like A Mighty Heart, and Changeling.

Revising history doesn’t play well when everyone can Google the critical acclaim.

      • Grant says:

I’m with Glimmer. I thought Angelina was dreadful in Changeling.

      • BossyKat says:

        @grant

Not surprised at your comment, different strokes for different folks.

Plus, there are indeed still loads of bitter hater trolls who will never let the one sided catfight die that still abound. (Not saying you are one)

That said, everyone, even message board haters are entitled to opinions on movies.

Someone down below thinks Lawrence was hammy in Silver Linings and not that great, I totally agree with that – that doesn’t mean we have *consensus* or that our opinion is in the majority. It also doesn’t mean our opinion is echoed by the critics who by the way, slobbered praise all over her.

        Capiche?

This really wasn’t about a couple snarky types weighing in per their usual biased attacks on Angelina, or your review of her performance.

I responded to Glimmer, because she seemed to be revising history to claim Angelina Jolie only has her noms and closetful of hardware because of ratings, which is b.s.

You can dislike this or that performance as an individual, but claiming your opinion/or Glimmer’s was consensus at the time and ppl we’re aghast at her last best actress Oscar nod for Changeling, is just some weird biased deluded POV on display.

        That didn’t happen

      • Cranberry says:

        @BossyKat
The Brangelina comment was referring to JLaw becoming overexposed in the media in general and that people are getting tired of her cause she gets nominated all the time and gets all the good roles even if they don’t fit her well (ie. playing a 30 yr old with teenage kids). Even though she’s a good actress, she’s still not convincing in Joy, and there’s many other excellent actresses that would have been more believable than her. But she’s the money ticket with the marketing appeal so she gets it all the accolades so that they can’t continue to make money off of anything she does. Not saying she’s not a good actress, just not as great as all the awards she gets.

      • GlimmerBunny says:

Oh no don’t get me wrong, I think Angelina is a very talented actress who absolutely deserved her Oscar for Girl, Interrupted (Changeling was okay but it’s hardly one of the worst performances someone has gotten a nod for). I just meant as in the sense of star power she and Brad (who I also love – Fight Club is my nr 1 favorite movie!) are the biggest “gets” for Awards Ceremonies, and that’s why they MIGHT have an easier time getting nominations/asked to present. And however you feel about JLaw in Joy and whether her nomination was deserved (I don’t think it was – 4 nominations before the age of 25 is too much, not even Meryl got that!) she is THE BIGGEST STAR IN THE WORLD RIGHT NOW, of course thay want her there 😀

    • LadyJane says:

Joy was a very poor film.

    • Diana B says:

Really annoyed by that. That movie was mediocre at best. What a joke.

    • M.A.F. says:

I still hold firm in that the only film she deserved the nomination for was Winter’s Bone. Everything after that, she has acted the same way but that also could be due to David O Russel.

      • minx says:

Agree with that. She was excellent in Winter’s Bone. Silver Linings was such a hammy picture and she was hammy in it.

      • Miss V says:

I literally couldn’t make it through the whole movie Joy. It was that bad. And J. Law plays the same character in every movie she does with that creep.

      • Fallon says:

I didn’t find her performance in Silver Linings to be anything special. Or any of her performances, really. I still haven’t seen Winter’s Bone, but I agree with Miss V that I feel like she just plays the same character over and over and it’s nothing special.

      • Grant says:

I didn’t think she was particularly great in Winter’s Bone either, she just played a very somber character that didn’t require much range of emotion–very different from all recent, showier roles. In my opinion, the best performance she’s given was in Catching Fire where I thought she was just fantastic. That ending close-up of her face when she realizes they’ve taken Peeta? Gave me goosebumps!!!

      • helena says:

YES! winter’s bone should’ve been her only nomination. she is the most overrated actress I’ve EVER seen on screen. she is pretty, she can be funny sometimes, but that’s is. she is NOT a great actress. I find her constant nominations an insult for other actresses that deserve it more.

      • M.A.F. says:

@Grant- To me, how the character was in Winter’s Bone fits with her acting. Winter’s Bone isn’t a go-to-happy movie. As for the Hunger Game movies, her acting works because she is playing within age range. All the movies w/David O Russel she has been miscast large impart because of the age of the characters vs. her. I also feel that Russel has no idea how to get anything out of her.

    • kibbles says:

I’m really tired of JLaw getting nominated for these horrible David O. Russell films. This collaboration needs to die and yet it will likely continue because JLaw always gets nominated.

I was surprised to see Rachel McAdams on this list. Everyone was saying her career was dead but it seems like she is making a stealthy comeback. I’m kinda rooting for her to win.

      • Cranberry says:

        + 1
Plus so tired of seeing the same people get nominated all the time. The awards system mostly recognizes actors with marketing appeal, the sure thing. So we get the same actors recycled and reconfirmed over and over along with the young, newbie crop of marketing darlings getting their break through.
Not saying these aren’t good actors being nominated, but if good acting was the only criteria at work for these awards, the nom. list would be very different from what it usually is.

    • hogtowngooner says:

Agree completely. The movie was an overrated mess. She was good with what she had but didn’t deserve a nomination AT ALL. I like her as an actress but my patience with the love-in for her is getting thinner by the day.

    • ShinyGrenade says:

What I don’t get…. Why nominated her for shitty Joy, but not Charlize Theron that was amazing as Furiosa?

      • ninal says:

        Yes!!!

      • Flora says:

Couldn’t agree more! Charlize was fantastic in it and I’m not even a fan of hers.
I am glad that Tom Hardy got some love.

I also don’t get why Alicia got a nod for The Danish Girl in stead of Ex-Machina.

      • Cranberry says:

        Absolutely.
And Charlize can out act JLaw any day. Damn, tired of this B.

“B” is just an expression folks. Don’t got no hate for the J – only justifiable criticism.

    • Fee says:

Tiffany27 Looove your comment. I couldn’t believe she had won her 3rd Golden Globe, for Joy of all roles. These roles are your everyday acting, if you’re gonna get a nom for “acting” then there’s some other names to b added. Now an Oscar nom? She’s over rated.
Show me who your friends are n I’ll show you who u are….she counts Kris Jenner as a bff

    • noway says:

I think you might be right about Jennifer, but Joy was terrible because the script was just odd. There was no joy in Joy. One of the most depressing films I had ever seen, and not in a good cathartic way either just give me a valium to recover way. I kind of wondered if David O Russell was using the film as his personal therapy or something.

I do kind of get Jennifer Lawrence’s appeal even more after that film. To me I saw how good of an actor she really is, because again the film itself was horrid, still not award worthy though. I think the winner will be Brea Larson for Room though which will make me happy for someone new.

      • jbap says:

All this pressedness about Lawrence! Joy may be a bad film but she got rave reviews for her performance across the board. Every year actresses get in for doing a great job in mediocre films – see Julianne Moore last year for Still Alice. Brie Larson will deservedly win, ahead just of Ronan and Rampling, so you needn’t worry about J-Law winning. But even if you dislike her, you have to face the fact that her acting peers – i.e. experts – keep voting for her because she’s very good at what she does.

    • Nic919 says:

There are many other women who deserved to be nominated over Jennifer Lawrence this year. She was good in Winter’s Bone, but the yearly nominations are ridiculous.

That said, I think Brie Larson is going to win.

      • jbap says:

Theron might have got in ahead of Lawrence, and maybe Mulligan – but apart from her, who else was clearly better than J-Law in a lead role in an Oscar-friendly film? You mightn’t think much of her, but Lawrence had the reviews…

      • Cranberry says:

        @jbap
The awards system and film industry is a racket. It’s all about money and who is marketable. It’s not that JLaw and the other noms aren’t talented, it’s that marketability and campaigning play a much bigger part in who gets recognized or wins than the actual performances.

      • Farhi says:

“who else was clearly better than J-Law in a lead role in an Oscar-friendly film? ”

        Emily Blunt?

    • Jib says:

Maybe she’ll win and insult foreign reporters and talk about slutty lesbians some more.

      • Josefina says:

Are we seriously turning the GG incident into a racial thing?

      • Jib says:

@Josefina, were you in hiding this past week? I didn’t turn it into a racial thing?? JLaw did, but being a jerk to someone whose first language isn’t English.

      • Josefina says:

She told him to put his phone down, and ask her about the GGs and not the Oscars. How are either of those racist?

    • Carol says:

I’m thinking its really a race between Saoirse Ronan and Brie Larson. Joy sucked and JLaw is annoying. Brie was pretty good and I haven’t seen Brooklyn yet but Saoirse is getting a lot of love from critics.

    • Josefina says:

Yeah. I’m still a huge JLaw apologist and I do think she’s a great actress, but Joy was bad. Not mediocre or dissapointing, a flat-out bad film. Her performance didn’t elevate the film in any way, either.

    • sarah says:

Joy was AWFU! God, I don’t remember counting down time like that in a movie in a while, I don’t think iv actually ever done that until Joy. Can’t believe she got nominated.. more so because there were other options this year. Charlize, Emily, etc.
Everyone is already pissed (with good reason) about Idris Elba snub. Also, JLAW has some good projects in the works/upcoming yrs that will be of fruition, so it’s stupid (and sets everyone up to hate her) to nominate her for something so sub-par like Joy.
I don’t hate her, but I hate that she got nominated, and I hate her cavalier attitude, it makes her seem ungrateful (which I’m she isnt), but i especially hate her love for David O Russell

    • kate says:

The film was mediocre but she was great in it. TBH that sentence sums up like half the Best Actress winners ever, so I don’t know why people are acting like only JLaw get’s this treatment. Best Actor/Actress is about the performance, not the film. More often than not people get nominated for average or mediocre films (or films that are briefly loved at the time but later recognised as the garbage that they are). Julianne Moore won last year for one of her more middling films and a performance that won’t be remembered.

Kate Winslet for Steve Jobs is an issue, since the film was mediocre, little seen and she was absolutely awful in it.

    • Maria A. says:

i’m having a hard time mustering any excitement for any of the actress nominations. Half of them at least belong to the ingenue club: pretty young things who just arrived.
They all bore me to be honest. I can’t even get excited about Blanchett sad to say.
Ah well, I’ll root for Spotlight and even the Martian to get something.

  4. Mimz says:

WHERE’S WILL SMITH? Well, whitewash again it seems.

    • Jegede says:

      My comments below exactly!

I suspect the viewing figures for this year, will be even lower than last year’s.

    • CharlotteCharlotte says:

      Yep. It’s so pathetic.

    • Anna says:

#OscarsSoWhite for a second year in a row! Straight Outta Compton should’ve been nominated for awards in the major categories, I’m surprised they didn’t give them one. I hope they win for Original Screenplay but that’s highly unlikely.
Isn’t the Academy tired of nominating JLaw??? I wish she would do regular dramas or action films for a while that weren’t so Oscar baity.
It’s disappointing that Idris didn’t get nominated, i really want him to win an Oscar

    • Mimz says:

      @Jegede @CharlotteCharlotte @Anna

It’s ridiculous to even support that nonsense now. Only reason majority of people will be watching is to see if this is Leo’s year. He’s the only one I root for, in this list, and Rachel McAdams because I like her and I think she’s underrated.
JLaw is getting noms left and right, even if she’s crappy in a role they will say she gave it character *major eyeroll*

This list of nominees is ridiculous.

    • hogtowngooner says:

Agree with the whitewashing comment but I didn’t think Will Smith was all that great in it. He was a bit too self-righteous in it in my opinion. Idris Elba deserved a nom more.

      • Tanguerita says:

Agree with that. Will Smith didn’t deserve the nomination, but Elba and M. B Jordan definitely did. So yes, academy, keep maneuvering yourself into complete, utter irrelevance. #Oscarsowhite…again

    • Jess says:

And Michael B. Jordan? And Ryan Coogler? And Straight Outta Compton. #Sowhite #Sosad (And I say all of this as a white, middle-aged, minivan-driving mom from the Midwest!)

      • SusanneToo says:

Am I the only one who thinks Samuel L. Jackson deserves a nomination just as much as Jennifer Jason Leigh(she’s great)? Is it that he’s always so good that he’s taken for granted, much like Ruffalo?

      • Don't kill me I'm French says:

Blame Warner Bros who didn’t support his own movie .Stallone did his own campaign alone .

      • Josefina says:

        @SusanneToo
I came to say the same, I thought Samuel L. Jackson was the best actor in that movie, actually. I can’t believe he only has one nom. He’s one of the most charismatic actors of all time. I literally don’t know a single person who doesn’t love him.

      • Flora says:

Samuel L. Jackson’s performance was superb. That part where he talks about his big black dingus and no blanket just cracked me up!

      • Cranberry says:

Apparently Samuel L. Jackson doesn’t ever campaign for awards. He probably knows it’s just a waste of time #OscarsSoWhite.

    • Alex says:

I texted my friend about how its time to bring back the #OscarsSoWhite tag. Its sad because TV is the MOST diverse its been in YEARS. Gay, straight, young, old, black, white, asian, Indian…you could find yourself anywhere on tv. The movies…not so much

      • Josefina says:

TV is where it’s at now. Diversity and all that jazz aside, the people experimenting, taking risks and truly creating interesting and fresh stuff are all working on TV. The film industry has become extremely formulaic and predictable.

      • Naomk says:

        @ Josefina
Ugh no its not. How do you explain for why SW is going on to become the biggest movie ever? Movies are still where money to be made.

      • Josefina says:

        @Naomk
I was talking about quality, not financial success.

      • Cranberry says:

        @Josefina
Yeah, I totally agree with you here. Not even the Golden Globes with all their mislabeled categories can keep up with all the good shows on TV/Cable/Steam. I liked a show like Mr. Robot that many don’t even know about actually won 2 GGs. But there was still a lot left out like Penny Dreadful, Luther, or The Last Kingdom. I’m sure there’s a lot more cause I can’t keep up either. I will say as far as the TV categories, the GG did try to spead out the noms to recognize as many shows as poss it seeems. I won’t say the same for their film winners though, but at least they’re better than the Oscars.

    • Mimz says:

you know @hogtowngooner @Jess I’m a bit of a hypocrite because I haven’t watched ANY of the movies nominated (I’m a Series person, let’s talk about Emmys and Golden Globes all day) but I used Will Smith more as an example than exactly wanting to refer to him exactly. I could have said Idris (my man), Michael B Jordan and etc but I wouldn’t remember all the names. I just don’t feel represented there…
So I wish everyone had a fair shot. And not the same old edited nominee list.

    • Erin N. says:

@mimz, Definitely agree with your whitewash comment and I personally think Idris and Straight Outta Compton totally got shafted. But Will Smith (who I used to love) lost his edge years ago and has sucked balls for quite a while now. Was only “meh” in Concussion. He needs to go away and take Jada, his giant bus, and his pretentious, spoiled rotten kids with him.

    • Original T.C. says:

      @SusanneToo

I completely agree with you as do critics that Samuel L. Jackson was one of the best in the Hateful Eight. It was released late so many people haven’t seen it but when they do their will be cries of #Samwasrobbed. I think Sam Jackson is so good in these films that it gets taken for granted that he will be good and he doesn’t care enough about the B.S. to campaign.

      • SusanneToo says:

I hope I live long enough to see an Oscar year that is filled with names like S.L. Jackson, Don Cheadle, Chadwick Boseman, David Oyelowo, Chiwetal Olijofor(sp?), Gugu M’batha Raw, Lupita N’Ongyo(?), as well as writers, directors, etc., but I doubt it. One can dream.

    • kate says:

Not surprising, his Oscar chances ended when reviews started coming out. Mediocre film, mediocre performance. The Best Actor race is too tight for that this year.

Now Idris Elba and MJB, they definitely deserved noms.

    • Maria A. says:

You just know Chris Rock will have something pointed to say! He’s the host this year.

  5. Soprana says:

    So white. Much pale.

  6. madly says:

Yay Rachel McAdams and Sly Stallone! Hope he takes it.

Boo to yet another Jennifer Lawrence nomination. Over rated.

    • Talie says:

So happy for Rachel. Based on nominations for Spotlight — she has a great shot at winning too.

  7. Miss M says:

I really disliked the hateful eight…

  8. Sixer says:

Yay Rampling. Boo Idris. Those are general.

Yay The Bloke. That’s personal. Even though you guys have gone right off him, my lust is undimmed.

    That’s all I’ve got.

    • GlimmerBunny says:

Indeed, yay for Tom Hardy! He won’t win but I love that he’s now an Oscar-nominated actor.

    • Lizzie McGuire says:

Now the question is will he show up or not? I love the Bloke but I know that he’s going to hate every second of it. I’m sure that Leo is going to convince him to be there & try to smile. “C’mon Bro do this for me, I want to win an OSCAHH”

    • Locke Lamora says:

But that will make him more famous! More press! How will he manage, poor delicate flower? My heart is breaking for him.

    • NUTBALLS says:

You are BLINDED BY LUST, Sixer. He doesn’t stand a chance against the other nominees. Unless the AMPAS voters are also BLINDED BY LUST.

Yea for Charlotte. Glad to see she was recognized by AMPAS and BAFTA’s this week.

    • Sixer says:

But Locke! Such fertile ground for pro- and anti- Bloke shenanigans! You should love this nomination for that alone. It’s going to be fabulous. Bloke will commit many sins of obnoxiousness. Half of us will enjoy some righteous outrage and the other half (well, me) will say, “Don’t care, I’d still chuck my knickers at him.” What MORE could we want?!

Nutballs. I confess. I am BLINDED BY LUST. And I’m going to have to be BLOKE-BLINDED since those Academy dunces missed out MY IDRIS. Also, I was so busy arguing with British MRA types elsewhere, I entirely missed the LEGS doing JArthy 2.0 yesterday, so I deserve this nomination today. Or er… something!

      • NUTBALLS says:

Sixer, first of all I’m happy that The Bloke will be there as you will be a sure giggle-worthy commentator of the event. Second, I have found my geo-unblocker (unblock-us,com), so I have been watching Luther series 4 with two more series in the hopper on BBC iPlayer. So, I’ll be watching TNM next month with you Limeys. Thirdly, you didn’t miss much on JArthy 2.0 yesterday. There snarkers are a minority now… so it’s rather boring on the gossipy posts and starting to feel a bit like Tumblr.

      • Sixer says:

Hooray for the unblocker! You should go to the Channel 4 website and look at the TV box sets there. Loads of good stuff, including lots and lots of high quality continental European drama. Also, find Hinterland on the iPlayer. A police procedural but really done well. Subtitled in parts as it’s in English and Welsh.

Ack. I could have livened it up!

      • NUTBALLS says:

Hinterland’s in my Netflix queue so I’ll check it out. I’ve been listening to an audiobook of Follett’s “Fall of Giants” and I love the South Wales accent that the narrator does. So you had me at Welsh.

    • Lilacflowers says:

I’m hoping The Bloke punches Leo while they’re being interviewed by Ryan Seacrest.

  9. Jegede says:

I wish it was Will Smith, instead of Eddie Redmayne.
I would have preferred Johhny Depp, in place of Eddie Redmayne.

And Vikander should have scored for her Ex Machina performance, rather than DG.

    • Edie says:

+100 Better odds of winning the Powerball than that happening.

I would’ve taken a half ripe avocado over Eddie “I had to lose all this weight to look more like a woman” Redmayne. Shut it, kitten, you’re done talking for now.

      • Jegede says:

        Exactly.
Redmayne (along with now pregnant wife, I think she was the fiancee for his 1st nomination) is hardly called out for his non stop hustle.

And people can bash on The Revenant, but it looks like one of the few films on this list that would actually do the business at the box office. Y’know that people actually see.

It along with Mad Max will likely be The American Sniper of the lot. (No lessons learnt from last year’s super low viewing figures).

      • Dani2 says:

        Agreed on both points. 100%.

      • Edie says:

I watched two interviews with Eddie last night from 2008 and 2012 to see if I was being too harsh (was it age, experience, etc. what is it) and I decided that I wasn’t, I really did go to school with at least three just like him. There’s an arrogance there that gets tempered as he gets more successful, but it’s still there and he plays the baddie just a little too well (“Hick”‘s bathroom scene was terrifying) because he needs a release from being so exhaustingly put on. He deserves an Oscar just for his ability to appropriate what Hugh Grant and Hugh Laurie (to a lesser extent) made bankable and that’s bumbling, floppy-haired Englishman.

Totally agree about “The Revenant.” These things should be a bit more nuanced than who can throw the most money around. Not that I want a rubric of dollar signs and attendance, but reward them for being entertaining and truly brilliant in either the acting or the way they draw the audiences into the story. I think it would do wonders for the whole show.

    • Me too says:

Mad max was hands down one of the worst movie I have ever seen. A harem of supermodels that need to be saved from their evil captor? Pssshhh! Obviously, a man wrote that script.

  10. Dani2 says:

I am 100% here for the Mad Max love, and even though I am a fan of her acting, i really feel like Jennifer Lawrence’s spot should have gone to Charlize Theron. Imperator Furiosa was one of THE BEST female performances I’ve seen in the last year.
I was worried that Jennifer would bump out Charlotte but I’m glad she got in.
Happy that Alicia was nominated but she should have been nominated for Ex Machina, that was a way stronger performance and she (tied with Kristen Stewart) has been the critics favourite this award season.
The Best Actor line up is exactly what I thought it would be.
And I’m 100% here for the Carol love, one of the best films and both Rooney and Cate were fantastic.
Disappointed that Michael couldn’t get in for Creed or even Idris or Abraham for Beasts of No Nation but not surprised.

    • GlimmerBunny says:

So happy for all the Mad Max nominations, but I agree that Theron should have been recognized. I hope she still attends to support the movie, she’s always one of my favorites on the red carpet.

    • Jenns says:

I just re-watched Mad Max over the weekend. That movie is fantastic. It may be one of the best movies I’ve seen in years.

    • original kay says:

Mad Max, the one where it’s mostly gratuitous violence, and where they escape, drive away a bit, then turn around and come back? that Mad Max?

maybe I need to re watch it because I thought it was horrible. As in a complete waste of time. what am I missing?

      • Dani2 says:

the one with the 97% RT score? yeah 😉 I’m kidding lol, it’s not a big deal, I LOVED it but I didn’t see it having the sort of widespread acclaim that it’s gotten, I certainly hoped but didn’t think it would actually make it all the way to the Oscars either, i have a few friends who don’t get everybody else’s obsession with it either.

      • ninal says:

My husband dragged me to mad max and I’m glad he did because it was one of the most intense and thrilling movies in years-Miller deserves an Oscar for the way he directed such a complicated shoot. Iand Theron was robbed!

      • islandwalker says:

Original kay- I’ve tried to watch it twice now and never get more than 30- 40 minutes in. How can that much action and violence be that boring? Sorry. Not a fan.

      • BendyWindy says:

Jesus, I thought it was just me. I didn’t even finish Mad Max. It was boring and over blown.

      • AJ says:

Yes, that’s the one. Mad Max is god f’ing awful. Like Joy, it has no redeeming features.

      • CornyBlue says:

        A lot apparently.

      • MaggieOwns says:

I agree original kay! I love the originals and had high hopes for the film, but they literally just drive out into the desert, only to turn around and come back. I just don’t get all the love for this movie. I feel like I’m taking crazy pills lol.

    • Hawkeye says:

Agree with you on all points, Dani2. Will just add that Bridge of Spies is weak among that Best Picture group.

    • paranormalgirl says:

Agree about Theron. I don’t even like her, but she was SOOOO good in “Mad Max”

    • ninal says:

Furious was an amazing character, Charlize was robbed!

  11. Hawkeye says:

Jennifer Lawrence does not deserve that nomination.

  12. Edie says:

I’m tickled that Matt Damon got a Best Actor nod. Say what you will, but I got dragged to “The Martian” by my husband and we laughed, we cried, and there were moments where we didn’t breathe. The guy next to me was crying into his beer at one point! It was the first time I’ve left the theatre in years and said, “Damn! Now that is what going to the movies should be like, like you left this world and were completely immersed in another!” And as a Bostonian, I’m biased, but Matt was wonderful.

The clothes whore inside me is thrilled that “The Danish Girl” got a costume and scenic design nod.

And finally, GO CHARLOTTE RAMPLING!!! Brilliant news!!!

    • original kay says:

I loved The Martian. Matt was just excellent in it. I hope he wins.

    • M.A.F. says:

I was pleasantly surprised by the Martian when I saw it. I went in after it had been out for a few weeks not knowing what it really was about. I rather enjoyed it.

      • Edie says:

I fought it but I had to make up for traumatizing my husband at “Gone Girl” last year. (At the end of the film, I looked at him and said, “I love you.” It was too easy.) Glad I went and I was also pleasantly surprised!

    • Farhi says:

I like Matt Damon despite myself. It is kind of like with Leo. I go in hoping I will dislike his movie because in real life I don’t like either one , and they both win me over.
I watched “Behind the Candelabra” with Damon and Douglas a few weeks back on Amazon Video. And I loved it.
I decided I should just stop fighting it and give into love. ))

    • Cee says:

ITA! I watched with my parents and brother in law and we all loved it. Just like you said, we cried, we laughed, we cheered. The Martian was great, I really hope it wins Best Picture.

      • Edie says:

I really hope it wins, too, because it really was everything you ask for in a movie and the reason you go to movies! Or at least, the reason I go!

    • frivolity says:

Sorry, I thought the Martian was an utter B-movie crapfest and that it was Damon’s worst and most laughable part to date. JMHO

      • Minxx says:

Gosh, I’m so glad someone said it. I was so underwhelmed by it – expected God knows what and got a predictable though well crafted HW, “feel good” production. In all honesty, I think that Ridley Scott is God and Alien was the best space movie EVER, but Martian can’t even compare. Matt Damon is a very likeable guy and he played a sympathetic character but please, I never forgot for a minute it was “Matt Damon on Mars movie”.. the entire time I knew he was going to be fine and everyone will be high-fiving at the end. The whole movie was basically a love letter to NASA. I mean, it was fine but def. not worth the hype it’s getting.

      • Josefina says:

Yup. My feelings for it were the same I had for Gravity – that’s what all the hype was about? I felt it was cliché and predictable. Not a bad movie, but typical Hollywood feel good.

      • frivolity says:

        @Josefina. ICAM I thought Gravity was cringe-worthy.

  13. Lizzie McGuire says:

So no Idris? Boo! Aside from that, Tom hardy’s nom is surprising so I guess Leo hustled for both of them. Mad about Straight Outta Compton not beign nominated because that film was great. Glad that Mad Max is there because it deserves it also that might be the real competition to Leo’s “Give me an OSCAHH” film in best picture. I’m actually excited that I have no idea who might win in the supporting categories I like the suspense. As for Johnny Depp not being nominated, what is Amber Heard going to do?!

  14. mia girl says:

    First impression predictions
    Spotlight – best picture
    Inarritu – best director
    Leo – best actor
    Larson – best actress
    Stallon – best sup actor
    Vikander – best sup actress

    • GlimmerBunny says:

Agree with your list although I’m a bit unsure if they’d give Inarritu bac-to-back Oscars.

    • Lizzie McGuire says:

I wish Best Director went to Miller instead of Inarritu, oh well we shall see.

    • hogtowngooner says:

I’d love to see Spotlight win Best Picture. It was excellent.

      • GlimmerBunny says:

Yeah, as much as I loved Mad Max, Spotlight deserves it. Such a great film and not a weak link in the cast (still think Keaton should have gotten nominated though).

      • mia girl says:

I also wish Keaton would have been nominated. I thought his performace was perfection. So was Liev Schreiber’s quiet performace which also could have been nominated for supporting actor.
I do wish the Oscar’s had a “best cast” award like other awards do.

    • Abbess Tansy says:

Substitute Mark Ruffalo for Stallone and I pretty much agree with your picks.

    • Tania says:

I think you’re right on all except best picture, I think that will go to The Revenant.

    • Miffy says:

My prediction: Leo will lose but Tom Hardy will get his.

After seeing The Revenant I thought DiCaprio was good but Hardy was EXCELLENT. It could have really been Leo’s year if they hadn’t paired him up with Hardy. The press coverage would be astronomical if that happened and with the white washing I think they’ll go for trashy gossip route to keep the Oscars relevant.

  15. mp says:

Yes! Mad Max got a nom for Best Picture!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  16. Pinky says:

Guess they’ll just have a whole bunch of “diverse” (read: black) presenters then.

(No, not looking for token award handouts, but rather more material made and invested in with, starring, written, and produced by diverse casts and crew.)

    • Naya says:

But there was good material this year, Idris, Will, MBJ, Ryan Coogler and those are just the films I watched. Sure more material would be great but the real problem is the voting demography. Old white men who view a PoC nomination as a “good deed” to be done once every 3 years.

      • V4Real says:

Concussion was a really good film. Will was so good in it. I have yet to see Beast of No Nation. Creed was a great film as well. I think all three actors got snubbed.

      • Pinky says:

Agreed. Median age of Oscar voter is 60. Sixty!! And white male. So, yeah. I guess we’ll have to settle for token gestures for the foreseeable future.

  17. QQ says:

I see #OscarsSoWhite Part Deux is a thing!! Brown folks didnt play enough servile roles or baddies to get a Nom (*sad trombone*??!)

But cool for Mad Max, That sh!t was epic!

    • Dani2 says:

It’s so sad, no MBJ for Creed, no Idris or Abraham Attah for Beasts of No Nation, and even though I didn’t think Concussion was a strong enough movie overall, Will could easily have gotten one for a great performance in a weak movie like Jennifer Lawrence did. I guess the same rules don’t apply to us. *shrugs* Omarosa is right once again.

      • QQ says:

Or Straight out of Compton… this is mad predictable and yet always dissapointing

      • Dani2 says:

@QQ Straight Outta Compton got in for original screenplay at least, but yeah, disappointing.

      • CN says:

Abraham Attah was absolutely fabulous especially since this was his first acting role. I was secretly hoping for a nom for him but knew it was a long long shot.

      • Dani2 says:

@CN He won the Volpi Cup in Venice for the performance so that really gave me hope but I should’ve known better.

      • KCat says:

My little man, Attah didn’t make it. To some people realize what he did in that movie? I’m not surprised. It’s about favors and whoring.

    • Lizzie McGuire says:

@QQ so mad about Straight Outta Compton! Definitely one of the top 10 films of 2015, it deserved a nom but oh well Leo’s movie deserved a nom more than Straigh Outta Compton sureeee

    • littlemissnaughty says:

I’m super pissed that SoC didn’t get a nomination. The performances are fantastic and the movie is great. Even if the second half wasn’t as strong as the first. Overall, I barely moved in my seat I was so engrossed. It was the only movie in 2015 that I HAD to see on day one. And it’s just something different among all the superherostarwarsstartrek and the ART. Ugh. I’m so bored with this list.

    • Farhi says:

But who would you take out and replace with black actors? I feel like most nominations are well deserved, there weren’t just enough spots.

The only ones I personally don’t think are deserved are Eddie for Danish Girl and Tom Hardy for Mad Max. But nobody was going to get in the way of Eddie’s hustle. And for Tom Hardy it was easier because he tagged along with Leo and Innuritu.
Or Jennifer Lawrence, she was going to be nominated no matter what.

You can’t just say it was intentional, maybe the competition was stronger?

      • V4Real says:

Eddie could come out and so could Fassbender. And Jen can definitely take a seat. I tried watching Joy to see if it was as bad as people said. I barely made it half way through. Just like with SLPB I was not impressed by JLaw’s performance. This might be another Oscar that was bought and paid for.

I gave Gervais an air high five when he made the joke about awards being paid for. I love how the camera went directly on Harvey.

      • littlemissnaughty says:

It’s not about that. Nobody is asking for Oscar affirmative action. But it’s getting boring and stupid when the Academy just keeps straight up ignoring anyone who’s not white. It’s the “maybe they were just better” argument and it just doesn’t hold up. It’s about politics and campaigning. Maybe they were better, sure. But were they really? There are certain buttons you push with the Academy. You suffer, you shave your head, you lose/gain weight, you put on a show basically. And then you better be white. Because really, WHO thinks that Kate Winslet did an Oscar-worthy job in Steve Jobs?

      • noway says:

They could have added another nominee to best picture for Straight out of Comptom. They can nominate up to 10 in the best picture category. There is something to the Academy being too many white old men who don’t see but one kind of picture. Although makes Mad Max seem like such an interesting choice this year too. Also, Idris Elba was definitely as good or better than any of the other nominees and deserved a nod too, but guessing his movie just didn’t get the views.

      • CN says:

@Farhi have you watched all these movies? I ask because you say that most of these nominations were deserved. I haven’t watched them all, so I can’t say for sure but in this day and age it does seem weird that all the deserving work was done by people of mostly one color. This system is definitely broken somewhere.

      • Farhi says:

@CN, no I didn’t watch all. On some I was going by reviews and trailers.
Room, Brooklyn, Mad Max – Room and Brooklyn, are they not deserving?
Mad Max is not my cup of tea and neither is Out of Compton.

A lot of people seem to think Out of Compton was shafted.
I have no opinion on it. There might be some truth that this is not a movie that would appeal to the white older men who are the Academy voters. I don’t know. Was the acting good in it? Who should’ve been nominated?

Also pragmatically speaking except of the best picture which ahs 10 slots, everything else is at 5 slots. Somebody else had to come out to make room for Idris Elba, for example. Did he campaign?

      • Naya says:

@Fahri So glad you brought up the Best Picture slot. As you correctly note, the voters are allowed up to 10 nominations for Best Picture. They picked only 8 this year. Eight. EIGHT. EIGHT!

If that isnt a f*^k you to films about PoC/women and films by PoC/women, I dont know what is.

      • Farhi says:

@Naya, the same situation as with Selma last year. I think last year also 8 movies were nominated and there was a spot for Selma but it didn’t get in. It would be interesting to know what really happened.
Some said it was released too late (clearly not the case here) and the copies weren’t sent to the voting members on time. Some said it just wasn’t good enough.
It would be interesting to know how they decide on 8 instead of 10. There are movies that could’ve taken the 2 other slots both years. It means it was a conscious decision to limit to 8.

The obvious snubs for me – Black Mass and Danish Girl and Sicario. There was some buzz about those. Well, in case of Danish Girl there was rather heavy promotion. I didn’t hear any buzz about Out of Compton being considered for an Oscar.

  18. Mia4s says:

I had a peak back at the early Celebitchy story on Alicia saying she would be at the Oscars. Lots of comments were pretty rough on her but, well, here she is folks. Props to her.

Weird year but some interesting nomination (as always the Oscars are not really about merit but…interesting). I guess spending a gazillion dollars on awards consulting paid off for the Revenant.

  19. PHAKSI says:

I dont know how much longer I can take Jennifer Lawrence’s “Im a normal girl just like you, Hollywood hasn’t changed me” act. Really cant stand her

  20. Bishg says:

    Yawn, yawn, yawn.
The nominations are totally predictable and boring. The same usual household names. No alarms and no surprises. Too few female players. And I like JLaw but seriously?
I’ll be damned if Leo wins an Oscar for that hotmess of a snoozefest that is The Revenant (which he will, just because the Academy feels he’s long overdue and because of his shameless campaign).

    • Farhi says:

I actually was surprised – No Danish Girl or Joy. Instead we got Martian and Mad Max. I think it was surprising.
Golden Globes were far more establishment based and predictable.

    • Josefina says:

“The Academy feels he’s long overdue and because of his shameless campaign”

That’s actually the internet, not the Academy. But yeah, I think he’ll win.

  21. Hindulovegod says:

Kate Winslet? She was distracting and terrible in Jobs. She couldn’t handle Sorkin’s pace and her accent work was all over the place. She was an obvious weak link in an already flawed film.

    • Josephine says:

I thought she was a shocker as well, but she is well-liked by the Oscar folks. To me, her nomination was way less deserved that Jennifer Lawrence’s for Joy.

    • Farhi says:

She won the GG though already. I think she was locked in. She is very well liked. She doesn’t rock the boat, works hard. The boys like her ( roll my eyes but it is the truth).

    • Cee says:

I thought she was very good in Jobs. Maybe everything else in that film was so bad that she shined through. Her accent was ok, Hoffman was from Poland and not everyone with english as a second language master the accent, even after so many years in the country. My accent sounds 100% eastern american, but my brother’s doesn’t – sometimes it’s all over the place.

    • KCat says:

      She was great in SJ.

    • arbelia says:

Well , if you read reviews for the movie, Winslet was the most praised after Fassbender. She got very good reviews. Many thought the best part of the movie were her nteractions wth fassbender. An she won some critics awards as well. And yes she’s very appreciated in the industry. People love her. She’s freaking Kate Winslet.

  22. pibi says:

I developed a huge crush on Tom Hardy and I loved his performance in The Revenant. So yay, I’m really happy he got nominated. Also Sam Smith and The Weekend performing – it doesn’t get any better!

  23. serena says:

Damn, I’m kinda sad for Idris and Johnny.. oh well, I really hope Mark Ruffalo will win the best supporting actor! Finger Crossed!

    • Insomniac says:

Yeah, I really liked Johnny in “Black Mass.”

      • iheartjacksparrow says:

Where’s the gal who said the Golden Globes were a joke because they didn’t nominate Johnny for Black Mass? I’m waiting for her to state that the Oscars are a joke, too. I think he got snubbed for his constant drunk and dirty appearance.

    • Josefina says:

Yeah, I feel bad for Johnny too. That was his best performance in ages.

  24. Insomniac says:

Is it a big shocker that Ridley Scott didn’t get a Best Director nom for The Martian? I’d thought he was seen as a pretty sure thing.

  25. Tiffany says:

I know the dark horse for director is McKay, but I would really like him to win. While comedy is his wheelhouse, he is a smart director and has been showing solid work for years.

    • lisa2 says:

I’m really happy for McKay.. and The Big Short.. and really happy for Brad’s Plan B and the entire team.. 3 BP nominations in a row.. not bad at all.

  26. Snazzy says:

    Mark Ruffalo.

    That is all

  27. original kay says:

    what a boring, predictable list.

and Mad Max? maybe I watched a different movie, because the mad max I saw was terrible.

    • ShinyGrenade says:

      Mad Max was pretty awesome.

      Different people, different taste.

The cinematography, all the choreography from Cirque du Soleil. The direction, the editing. The actors. It’s a stunning movie and it was.. amazeball to see in on the big screen.

    • AJ says:

10 minutes into Mad Max I was wishing it was over. It never got better.

  28. Diana B says:

I’m just glad El Abrazo de la Serpiente got nominated for best foreign picture. Yeii for my country. That’s what should get us talking, not some freaking miss universe scandal 😒

  29. M.A.F. says:

I got say, I’m starting to admire Alicia Vikander. She called it all the way back in the spring that she would be at the Oscars in some form or another. And here she is nominated. Good for her. Enough with Jennifer Lawrence already. I hope the Revenant crashes and burns simply due to their Struggle campaign. Glad that Charlotte Rampling is in there and I hope Mad Max wins Best Picture.

    • Dani2 says:

I’m a fan of hers because she actually has the talent to back it up, yes, there’s some hustle involved, even Charlotte Rampling had to hustle a little but Alicia has scored dozens of critic nominations this year so I’m happy for her nomination, I just wish it would have been for Ex Machina instead.

      • M.A.F. says:

Ex Machina was on my list when it came out in the theaters but I never got around to it. I’m going to make it a point this weekend to watch it (is it out on DVD?).

      • Farhi says:

If you have Netflix streaming or Amazon Video streaming, Ex-Machina is on both .

      • Lurker says:

Ex Machina is on Canadian Netflix now. I watched it two nights ago. Unsure if it’s any other Netflix.

      • M.A.F. says:

I do have Netflix. So there is my weekend. Thanks Farhi.

    • KCat says:

Charlize deserves nothing. She didn’t really do anything in MM. i love the movie though. Fassbender deserves his nomination. The movie isn’t great but he busted his butt and pulled a miracle with that heavy Sorkin dialogue. He’s a beast! I’m rooting for Leo but Fassbender is my next choice. Redmayne should be replaced with Tremblay or Attah from “Beast of No Nation”.

    • KCat says:

You admire arrogance and backhanded hustling, obnoxious campaigning and handlers who got her in on category fraud like Mara? She’s extremely too thirsty and it seems like it’s more about awards than the work. She called it because she knew who was doing the biding behind the scenes. She was guaranteed. Same with Redmayne. She’s hammy in DG and good in ExMachina. No one should get a thing from that terrible movie. Tom Hooper is a mediocre director. “Tangerine” was the better Trans movie.

Jennifer Lawrence is some nonsense as well. It’s all a game.

  30. Soprana says:

Chris Rock is going to have a field day with this ish…

  31. Adrien says:

Hmmp! No Carol. But yay for Charlotte Rampling although it’s Brie Larson’s year.

  32. Mimi says:

No Johnny Depp? That is seriously stupid. He deserve a nomination. Take out Matt Damon! He was boring in the Martian!
Anyways, I want DipCario to win now that Depp is out. I see Kate is nominated too. Would love to see both of them win.

    • Farhi says:

I agree. I think Depp deserved it over Redmayne. But there are several other contenders who didn’t get in either, people mentioned them above. Depp was probably the next in line. His erratic behavior lately probably cost him the nomination.

  33. Sarah01 says:

Matt Damon was ok in the Martain, not Oscar worthy whatever that means and even though I love Michael Fassbender he doesn’t deserve that nomination either. Should have been replaced with Micheal Shannon and Idris Elba. Beasts of No Nation was an exceptional film and Keeping Room was great and deserved at least best Sript or screenwriter. BoNN deserved recognition for sure. And JLaw – my eyes have rolled out of my head and down the street. I do not understand her appeal or her
‘Talent’, same goes for winslet. Not a fan of Charlize but she has talent, she gave a powerhouse performance in Mad Max.

    • tracking says:

I agree with every bit of this (though I do get Winslet’s and JLaw’s appeal and talent, just not in these particular roles).

  34. Lance says:

Why is anybody surprised Beasts of No Nation isn’t there? Its technically a TV movie since its produced by Netflix. TV movies are not eligible for Oscars.

    • CK says:

No, that’s not how that works. Beast of No Nation was a feature film and was given a feature film release in order to qualify for the Oscars (an opening in New York and in L.A.). It was eligible, they just didn’t nominate it or anyone from it.

      • Avril says:

It was not a feature film though. It released big at cinemas and on TV the same day. Netflix is not a cinematic studio, so how can it be nominated for an Oscar? Netflix is a VOD streaming network. Like HBO.
If it was eligible then it was would have been nominated. It wasn’t.

      • CK says:

@Avril. To be eligible for Oscar contention, a film merely has to release before the end of the year in NY and LA theaters. That’s it. It was eligible. They just decided not to nominate it.

      • KCat says:

They’re probably trying to punish Fukunaga for trying to change the game with his Netflix/theatre release. It’s going that way anyway. Shame Attah, Elba and Fukunaga got snubbed

    • Cee says:

You can argue that Netflix is now a studio. They develop their own content and show it through their own platform and limited/wide release. The industry is changing.

      • Avril says:

Netlfix is not a studio though. It produces mainly TV content and online shows. It doesn’t produce motion pictures. I don’t think you guys know how it works but thats okay.

      • Cee says:

If it produces TV content it can produce films. The only difference is their platform. Just because I watch netflix on my phone, tablet, apple tv or smart tv doesn’t mean their original content can be reduced to only TV shows.

BONN got a release, the fact it was also made available on Netflix does not take away from that.

      • Dani2 says:

@Avril it’s you who doesn’t know how it works clearly, it’s gotten both golden globe nominations and SAG nominations for a motion picture (aka feature film) so your argument is baseless and illogical.

      • Korra says:

@Avril honey I don’t think you know how it works. It’s cute you tried. Netflix did not produce this film they distributed it. They also gave it a theatrical release so that it would qualify for major industry awards and because the director required it as part of the deal, but released it on Netflix as well as that was always netflix’s intention. So it qualifies. It just wasn’t nominated. Probably because the old fogeys think the same as you and don’t really take the time to actually learn whether it fulfilled the basic requirements of a theatrical release.

      • KCat says:

        Right

  35. Dane says:

I’m so sad about Johnny Depp’s snub. He deserved to be nominated over Eddie Redmayne, who just WON last year! I can’t believe how the Academy continuous to be this predictable.

  36. Gina says:

Martian and Joy? They were the most boring movies ever. I read “the Martian” and it was 1000 times better than the movie

  37. Adrien says:

When Marnie was There >>>> Inside Out. Hope this underrated Studio Ghibli film wins.

  38. Betti says:

With Cranston and Damon I. The best actor category it’s again a tough one for Leo, personally I want tot see Cranston get it cause he’s an amazing actor but it’s Leo’s year.

  39. Cynthia says:

Sam Smith is so overrated, his music is mediocre at best. What’s the obsession with blue-eyed soul singers?

  40. Holly says:

Jacob Tremblay. His performance in Room was fantastic. He’s been snubbed by pretty much every award. JLaw is so freaking overrated.

  41. LolaDoestheHula says:

I really am in awe of the academy’s dedication to white supremacy! They aren’t even trying to hide it.
So many great performances by actors of colour they could’ve chosen.

My crush on Micheal B Jordan died the moment I read his dodgy opinions about women, but he really really is one of the most talented actors of his generation. I he weren’t black he’d have two oscar nominations by now.

    • sanders says:

LolaDoestheHula, I so agree with your comment. After last years critiques, It’s like they decided to double down on their white supremacy. Don’t look to hollywood for progress.

Again, two strong films with black directors, Creed and Straight Outta Compton get ignored. Totally agree about Michale B Jordan.
It must be soul draining to be a black actor and director during award seasons.

  42. PunkyMomma says:

Delighted Sorkin was snubbed. Take that, you douche!

  43. CK says:

I’m not really that surprised by anything. As for the J. Law thing, I think people are confounding the movie with the performance. Like it or not, while the movie has gotten mixed reviews, J.Law has been cited as the standout performer even in the negative ones. It’s how Meryl Streep got in for that awful Margaret Thatcher movie. Actors/Actresses can and should get nominated if they turn out fantastic performances regardless of quality of the overall film.

I wish Will Smith and Idris Elba would have made it in. I’m shocked that the kid from room didn’t make it into supporting like they were campaigning. I’m hoping for some Mad Max love at the ceremony and I’d love to see Rooney Mara and Saoirse Ronan/Charlotte Rampling win in their respective categories. Also no nom in BP for Straight out of Compton or Beasts? Lady Gaga, the Weeknd (let’s petition that he doesn’t sing live), and Sam Smith could all win Oscars.

My worst fear of Star Wars:TFA getting nominated while Mad Max getting snubbed didn’t occur as well.

    • kate says:

Yes. The movie is getting average reviews, but she’s getting great ones.

Cate Blanchett was nominated for the Elizabeth sequel, which got way, way worse reviews than Joy. Meryl and Kate Winslet get nominated and even win for mediocre films all the time. Julianne Moore won last year for one of her least interesting performances in one of her least interesting films. Sandra Bullock won for that freakin Lifetime movie that was The Blind Side.

Jennifer Lawrence being nominated for a film that got mixed reviews, but that she got glowing reviews for, isn’t exactly the totally unique and outrageous situation people are pretending it is.

  44. Jessica says:

    Wow so pale.

This is what I’d like to happen:
-People boycott the Oscars – this doesn’t mean the winners refusing their awards, instead ecru one nominated refuses to attend the ceremony. If enough people do not attend the people that run the Oscars will pay attention because of the cost to produce the show and the money they earn from the show airing. Then actors who won and aren’t there to accept awards refuse to accept via email or phone call.

Of course this won’t happen but wow it’s always been white washed but this year is ridiculous. If I were any of the people nominated, particularly in Best Film, Best Actor, Supporting Actor, Best Director, Writer, I’d feel like maybe my nomination doesn’t matter or mean anything.

  45. Cynthia says:

Shout out to Alicia Vikander! I think she’s really talented but she also hustled for this and exactly as she predicted she’s at the Oscars 🙂
Disappointed but not surprised for the lack of love to Ryan Coogler and Creed, as well as for Beasts of No Nation.

  46. Suzy from Ontario says:

I’m really surprised that Will Smith didn’t get a nom for Concussion. I’m not usually a big fan of his, especially lately, but I went to see this movie and came away really impressed. The movie was excellent and he did a stellar job. Imo, he was as good or better than Fassbender in Steve Jobs, which was kind of meh, imo.

  47. familard says:

Emily Blunt pushed hard for Sicario, complete shut out all season.

  48. ShinyGrenade says:

I hope Mad Max wins all the awards. Miller does deserve best director.
Plus, Inarritu would get so pissy, it will be funny

  49. Div says:

Idris received a best supporting nomination from BAFTA, SAG, and the Golden Globes….but no Oscar. The only award Straight out of Compton got was for the screenplay…which I heard was written by all white dudes. NO Ryan Coogler or MBJ. No Benicio del Toro. No Beasts or Straight out of Compton or Creed. I can’t with how painfully WHITE this list is…especially when there were so many deserving choices. Also, JLaw getting a nomination for Joy is beyond absurd and I liked her in the movie. I love Rooney and Alicia but the category fraud is ridiculous too since both were clearly lead performances.

    Over it.

  50. Mira says:

I am here for Charlotte Rampling! This almost makes up for Vanessa Redgrave not being nominated for Corilanus a few years ago. Nice to see older women who aren’t named Dench or Smith get some recognition.
Idris should have been nominated, surprised Hardy got one but not Idris. The list with Hardy, Fassbender, Leo, redmayne and Damon couldn’t be more lily white.

    • Edie says:

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSS! Team Rampling. Let’s do this!

I am way too excited about this. Tomorrow I’ll have a small coffee.

    • lisa says:

i’m so excited her nom, i dont care about the rest

now someone has to sleep with harvey weinstein to make it happen , isnt that how it works?

  51. Addison says:

There is no way The Martian and Spotlight should have been nominated over Steve Jobs. Both films were enjoyable but neither of them were as gripping as Jobs. The Martian was entertaining but it was nothing special. And let’s face it a comedy is not going to win. Spotlight while having a very important subject matter, did not have anyone who stood out. While Ruffalo did a good job it was not a standout performance.

And, dissapointed that Jeff Daniels has been shown no love this awards season. He was just so, so good.

I agree about Idris though, the academy is filled with either blind people or fools. Probably fools.

You know, I bet people who are blind would do a better job even without being able to watch the performances.

    • Cee says:

I disagree. I thought Jobs had potential but it was sloppy and lazy. The script and editing were awful and I actually saw people leave after 30 minutes. The only redeeming quality – Jeff Daniels (such an incredible talent!) and Kate Winslet. I’m not sure Fassbender deserves the nomination.

      • KCat says:

Fassbender deserves his nomination (not a win) but Jeff Daniels really deserves a nomination. He really knows how to deliver that Sorkin diarrhea/walk & talk dialogue lol. I don’t care for the movie, but the acting is tops.

    • lilacflowers says:

Jeff Daniels gave the best performance in that film.

  52. Kiki says:

This is #Oscarsowhite all over again. I hope the Academy Award ratings go low again. Ah when will they ever learn and I hope Alicia Vikander wins the award for best supporting actress, nad she will finally be more famousv especially more famous than her “beautiful ” boyfriend of hers. And make more money than him and more stars in her pretty face of her and more rolea and famous friends than her “beautiful ” boyfriend of her. And youl get the idea.

Anyways, this is a crappy list and wish Oscar no people to watch. #bite me.

    • Cee says:

Hey Kiki, I agree. And Best Director always goes to a man.

I hope Vikander and Mara do not win – I have nothing against their performances, but they were clearly LEADS in their respective films, and I’m tired of studios cheating the real supporting actores and actresses.

      • Kiki says:

Oh I just forgot that Chris Rock is hosting the the brought the academy awards… I won’t be watching but since Ricky Gervais stick to all these “frauds” like *cough* Harvey Winstein *cough*, I hope Chris Rock give all the actors, directors, studio heads and the old white voters of the Academy Awards some HELL.

Gosh, I am ferocious today… I am just a passionate and feisty person.

      • Lucy2 says:

Agreed- I just saw the Danish Girl last night, and I don’t understand why she is supporting, not lead. She basically had the same amount of screen time as Eddie, and it really was a two-person film.

    • KCat says:

Category fraud, whitewash, showmances, dismissing child actors, payola, favors, Nostalgia votes, beauty contest…the usual.

I really wish Ricky Gervais would host the Oscars so he can tell the truth lol.

  53. Karen says:

The Reverant cost over $135m to film (not counting marketing millions) and made $50m to date. Isn’t it usually considered a commercial success if it makes 1/2 or more the first weekend because sales drop dramatically after that point?

The budget bloated because of the directors need for the perfect terrible conditions to film in, but still, this film isn’t a huge commercial success. It’ll be lucky to break even (esp considering on the marketing $$$ their doing).

The oscar is the only way the company is going to salvage it. AKA it might be in the red, but it is an award moxie. So they’re going to sink more money into oscar promotion. If it can’t be a commercial success, it’ll be a critical one.

    • Cee says:

Karen, this is about art! Not money! This is about the tourtured souls of those brave enough to direct and act!

      • Karen says:

Lol cee. Yes you are correct studios only care about the art and the brave. I don’t know what got into me.

      • Cee says:

LOL – I’m so tired of this, yet I’m a film nerd. But if you walk into any studios HQs in LA you will see their walls covered with their Best Picture wins. So, in this case, if The Revenant wins, the studio will not care about the money because they will be able to put another poster on their wall.

    • noway says:

The Revenant was always primarily Oscar and award bait for Leo and Inniratu. I don’t think they are worried about the production budget, as this movie was always award bound, even the release date shows that. I also think your theory about making their money back is bogus when you are up against the juggernaut of Star Wars. If that was their primary concern not the awards they would have released it at a different time, not one week after Star Wars release. They knew the box office would be lower, either that or they are incredibly stupid. My understanding is the box office numbers for Revenant were much higher than anyone in the industry thought it would be.

    • Korra says:

It did very well this weekend one of Leo’s best openings. It ranks the 4th best openings for him. All of Leo’s movies mme sh-tloads of cash so unfortunately the revenant will probably as well.

Only the noms for best actress and best supporting actors/actress are really any fun.

  54. Cee says:

I’m late to the party (Rickman’s news blindsided me so much I forgot about the nominations) but I’m not surprised at all the white actors and all the male directors being recognised. I haven’t yet seen all the nominated performances, but it strikes me as odd that every year, with few exceptions, the best performances are by white actors.

I’m happy Hardy got a nomination – everyone is praising his performance yet no major award recognition previous to the Academy. Maybe the money left after Leo’s campaign was directed at this nomination.

I’ll be happy if Best Actress goes to Saorise Ronan or Brie Larson.

I hope Vikander and Mara do not win solely based on the fact that they’re NOT SUPPORTING. They are leads and studios should stop doing this. It’s not fair to the truly suporting actors/actresses.

    • Kate says:

Thank you for pointing out the clear issue in the supporting actress race! While I haven’t seen Carol, I have seen The Danish Girl and Alicia Vikander is 100% the lead actress, she almost has more screen time then Eddie. This reminds me of when Kate Winslet pulled the same thing with The Reader at the Golden Globes-she won for Supporting for the Reader but come Oscar time she was in the lead category.

As for the Oscars being all white its absolutely ridiculous and disappointing/sad. There were a slew of amazing performances and films that deserved to be nominated, the entire cast of Straight Outta Compton should be nominated and the fact that it didn’t get a best picture nomination (despite the 10 nomination rule) is ridiculous.

  55. Madpoe says:

Perhaps I feel asleep, but how in the hell did Mad Max get an Oscar nom?
    It was a needless remake.
Despite having a low desire to see “The Revenant” and “The Hateful Eight”, I enjoyed them.
Idris Elba in “Beasts of No Nation” was great! How’d that get overlooked?!?

  56. CornyBlue says:

    MAD MAX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
They snubbed scott for the Room director lol academy never change.

  57. bree says:

imo it was a bit of a boring year for movies.

    • vespernite says:

AGREED! And I’m convinced Rooney Mara is a ghost! I need her to stop haunting us with her terrible boring face and lackluster acting!

  58. Guest says:

Damon got a nomination? LMAO…. I like Damon but this is a joke. That’s it for me and the Oscars. So done with the ass kissing… Btw Joy? This annoying girl was nominated again? What is this? So we have to nominate Lawrence for everything from now on? Geez….

  59. familard says:

Great year for ‘big’ movies but crap for the ‘prestige’ awards films.

  60. frivolity says:

Beyond demonstrating the racism in the academy, I think this list also shows that TV (especially cable) is where it’s at. A lot of these films (the Martian, Joy, Steve Jobs) were absolutely awful.

  61. Saks says:

The people I think are being snubbed are Ryan Coogler, Idris Elba, Cary Fukunawa and Michael B Jordan. Creed for Best Movie, and Chilean movie El Club for Best foreign film (this one is the biggest snub for me).

But I find interesting people still get mad at this, when this are U.S. White people awards. Someone pointed out that, people who does not fit that description have to be super accomplished to get a nom, and I think that is because if there isn’t a big name and campaign behind a certain movie/director/actor/actress they wont get it. Truth is they treat every non whites as they treat foreign films and actors.

I’m happy for Alejandro, Chivo, Rachel McAdams, Charlotte Rampling and for Colombian film “Embrace the serpent” (really if you have the chance, watch it, it is awesome!), although sadly is going to lose to that hungarian film about academy favourite subject: WWII.

    • Harryg says:

I am so sick and tired of WWII movies.

      • Farhi says:

I like WW2 movies. Speaking of WW2, Nolan and Hardy are set to do one next year – Dunkirk. It will probably hit the Oscars in a couple of years,

    • Anne tommy says:

Paul Dano was snubbed, fab performance in Love and Mercy. And Tarantino should have at least got screenplay nom, I loved the Hateful 8.

      • SusanneToo says:

        Agree on Dano.

      • lilacflowers says:

Dano consistently puts out great work and is consistently ignored, even in films for which his co-stars receive nominations or wins. (12YAS, There will be Blood, Little Miss Sunshine). He made Love & Mercy interesting.

      • Farhi says:

I just discovered Paul Dano in the War and Peace. He is the only redeeming thing in that production. Would love for him to get recognized at some point.

  62. Mila says:

Where is Ridley Scott why isn’t he nominated seriously? This is ridiculous.

  63. anon says:

I’m screaming right now. Johnny Depp and Idris Elba were robbed.

  64. Lucy2 says:

I have very little interest in awards this year. Happy to see Saoirse nominated. Puzzled by Bridge of Sighs. Glad to see an action movie break into Best Picture. Disappointed by so little diversity. Don’t really care who wins what.

  65. kri says:

THE BLOKE!!!!!!!!!!!!! YASSSS! But no Idris?! Come on, you a-holes.

  66. alice says:

really surprised but slightly pleased that Tarantino was not nominated for screenplay. Surprised because the script was good, one of his bests. Pleased he didn’t got it because he bragged so much about it and took not only the nom but also the win for granted. Big Hollywood ego beaten for once

  67. AlmondJoy says:

    BYE OSCARS ✋🏾

  68. KCat says:

Pale as h*ll up in the nominations. Not surprised at all.

    My Picks:
Picture: Room, The Revenant, The Big Short or Spotlight
Director: Abrahamson or Innaritu or George Miller
    Actor: Leo or Fassbender
    Actress Brie, Ronan or Rambling
    Supporting Actress: Mara or Winslet
    Supporting Actor: Hardy

    Snubs:
Elba, Attah, Director Fukunaga for “Beast of No Nation”
    Tremblay for “Room”

  69. KCat says:

Oscar fraud and bs as usual lol. Best Supporting Actress fraud is crazy. Carol has two lead actresses. AV is lead in DG.

  70. Well says:

Wow. I can’t believe Johnny Depp wasn’t nominated. I know the Academy doesn’t like to nominate or let people win for playing psycho killers. But, this is probably a career best for him. DiCaprio will have many many more roles after The Revenant. But this was one of those “once in a lifetime” roles for Johnny. He should’ve been nominated at the very least.

    It’s not even #OscarsSoWhite at this point. It’s like #Oscarsdontmakesense #Oscarsdontappreciateartatall #OscarsAJoke

    Like, dang.

  71. Cranberry says:

I can’t believe Cinderella got nominated for Best Costume Design and not Crimson Peak. F*king Disney man.
And maybe should have gotten a nom for Best Production Design too.

  72. LAK says:

The only unsurprising nomination is Sylvester Stallone for best support.

He was the talk of the town long before award season started. His GG wasn’t a surprise and neither will his Oscar.

Plus, the academy loves it when an old timer makes a come back.

At this point, it’s Sylvester’s oscar to lose.

  73. vespernite says:

How the hell is Mad Max: Fury Road getting nominated? No one even saw it! STUPID!

    • Jamie says:

Uh. What world are you living in? MM:FR brought in around $45 million on its opening weekend in the U.S. alone. Its worldwide gross is now in excess of $375 million. Seems like quite a few people saw it (and most–myself included–enjoyed it).

  74. themummy says:

I’m boggled at the Mad Max love. That was bar none one of the worst, most boring, inane movies I have ever seen, and the post-apocalyptic type of movies are always favorites of mine. When it was over, I just shook my head and marveled at what a monumental waste of time watching it was. Just terrible. Ugh. I hope it doesn’t win anything.

They had a cool idea and had a cool “look,” but it was just so flat. Not to mention, there was almost no dialogue and there was no character complexity or development whatsoever.

  75. betsy says:

Nicholas Hoult should have got a supporting nod for Mad max. He was the best thing in the film

  76. Eru says:

No Kristen Stewart? But….didnt she had…. like… that… Cesar thing? Which totally means she should have been nominated because its like… so…. prestige… Like the biggest awards after Oscar…… It twihards minds. )))))

So all that bribery from her team did not pay off. No matter how they tried to push it through those anonymous critics groups. Kristen Stewart is basically Jennifer Aniston of this season. When very limited talent actors try to get into nominations by aggressively campaigning. Anniston was doing it publicly. Kristens management team were buying those wins with few groups of critics. Hoping that voters at awards will be like: “But hey, those critics are naming her Best. We totally should nominate her too”.

    • Div says:

Sure, keep thinking that the New York Film Critics are an anonymous group despite being full of some of the most prominent film critics in the country and having major stars show up to their events. I guess people like Saorise and Oscar Isaac, who they have awarded now and in the past, have paid them off too? Sure, keep thinking her team bribed the New York Film Critics Society, the LA Film Critics Society for Runner up, and the National Film Critics Society. I guess her team paid of THR, Variety, and Indiewire and all the big sources to “cover” it. She must have the most powerful PR team ever to be able to pull of those shenanigans.

RME. You are transparent and beyond ridiculous. She was never going to get a nomination for a quiet performance in a overly long talky film that premiered nearly two years ago at Cannes and barely qualified to be in the running this year. It doesn’t mean that critics nominations are useless though.

  77. iheartjacksparrow says:

I know it won’t win, but I’m so happy Shaun the Sheep got a nomination. I loved that movie.

  78. here's Wilson says:

I just watched Mad Max for the first time last night and I’m shocked that it’s anywhere on this list. Must of been a bad year in film.

And I’m having very mean thoughts about Leo. Whole I believe he’s an Oscar caliber performer he’s such a douche in his personal life I’ll laugh if he doesn’t make the cut.

  79. NN says:

God, I hope a storm or tornado hits the kodak (dolby?) theater, or at the very least ruin the live show so nothing will be aired mwuahahahahahhaaaaa……

  80. SusanneToo says:

IMO Benecio Del Toro was snubbed. I’d be happy to trade out Damon or Redmayne for him.

  81. Ickythump says:

I really hope Saiorse Ronan wins she’s such a great actress and was wonderful in that movie.

  82. Dangles says:

Leo inches closer to that breakthrough Oscar win. So expect the campaign against him to sink even lower than it already has.

Charlize Theron has been snubbed BIG TIME. From all reports she was the standout in Fury Road.

Kristen Stewart was rightfully overlooked because her performance was competent but not award worthy. J-Law’s nomination was a joke and the backlash towards her is gaining momentum.

Up until a few days ago I was indifferent about whether or not Straight Outta Compton should receive an award. But I’ve since discovered that it’s historically inaccurate and that Dre has a history of violence towards women. But then again what else would you expect from a band who produced the following lyrics “So what about the bitch who got shot? F-ck her! You think I give a damn about a bitch? I ain’t a sucker.” So now I’m glad it wasn’t nominated for any high profile awards.

    • Farhi says:

That is my problem with much of hip-hop and rap too. I don’t see how such lyrics are acceptable, cultural appropriation or not, I will never accept it. I am certain 20 years from now people will realize how counter productive such demeaning language is.

      • Dangles says:

Agree. The beautification of NWA since this film was released beggars belief. People gush about them like they were good guys.

  83. Me too says:

In years past, I have often see POC get nominated and win. Not sure why we are trying to enforce affirmative action on the Oscars. Shall I provide a list of the POC actors and actresses that have won? I swear. An African American woman makes what is the essentially a made for TV movie and everyone is in a huff about that person getting snubbed. Sorry… Don’t see the snub. It wasn’t a quality movie. Now, J Law getting nominated for Silver Linings Playbook? NO! It seems more like a game of favorites than racism. There are plenty of white talented actors that give phenomenal performances and are routinely snubbed and ignored by the academy. Yet, we want to focus on the “good” or pretty good performances of POC.

It is Alejandro GONZALEZ Iñarritu. Both are his last name, not just Iñarritu.
It is just not his name. Sounds like people are erasing the “common” last name for a fancier one, that is just wrong.

To me, this past year was rather boring in terms of film. But I’m so excited about Charlotte Rampling! I doubt she’ll win, but it would be amazing if she did 😀

I know I’m in the minority but while he’s an arrogant a$$, Aaron Sorkin can write. Every TV series and most of his movies, some not so good, were all beautifully written. But I guess because he’s apparently a jerk, he doesn’t get nominated. Leo and The Revenant were horrible. We walked out of that movie. It was simply made to showcase Leo and show how hard he worked and how much he suffered. He didn’t suffer enough. The movie stunk! SoC was GREAT. That movie should have been nominated. Writing was good. Actors were good. Cinematography was good. But I guess since the majority of Oscar voters are white men over the age of 65, we get the list above.
