Lily Allen partially blames sexism for her party-girl image

Lily Allen sat down with the ladies of The View, and did some straight talk about her career and her party-girl image. Lily admitted that she feared she “became more famous for being a train wreck than a singer” at one point. But Lily also took the media to task for portraying her excesses differently because she’s a woman. Lily claims, “Young women are represented in a way that isn’t true. If a girl is having a drink she’s a drunk, if that happens with a guy it’s not portrayed the same way.”

Lily does have a point – the archetypal “bad girl” image is perpetuated by a sometimes Victorian-seeming media. Guys who party are treated differently than girls who party, by the media and by gossip-consumers (like us). While acknowledging that Lily has a point, I still think the girl was a mess for a little while. But she seems to be back in good form, so good for her:

She may have just completed a sell-out U.S. tour and be currently riding high in the music charts, but Lily Allen feared her career was over after becoming ‘more of a train wreck than a singer’.

The 23-year-old, who up until recently had been making headlines more for her party lifestyle than her singing, revealed that she actually questioned whether she still had the ability to create hit music.

Speaking about her first album Alright, Still, Lily said: ‘I took a bit of a beating the first time around. I became more famous for being a train wreck than a singer. I didn’t think I was capable of writing songs and making music.’

But although the star concedes that she had lost some focus, what she won’t accept are accusations that she is a ‘falldown drunk’, ‘exhibitionist’ and ‘crazy’.

She even hinted that sexism was the reason for the tarnished image.

Dressed conservatively in a white dress with a string of pearls, she told the panel on American TV talkshow The View. ‘Young women are represented in a way that isn’t true. If a girl is having a drink she’s a drunk, if that happens with a guy it’s not portrayed the same way.’

But her reputation as a bit of a ‘boozy wild child’ was well and truly earned after famously making a spectacle herself at last June’s Glamour Women of the Year Award’s ceremony.

Clutching to her award, a worse-for-wear Lily had to be lifted to her car by a minder.

And last September she famously got into a drunken war-of-words with Elton John as they hosted the GQ Awards. In front of an audience she sipped champagne on stage until she began slurring and swearing.

When she told the audience at London’s Royal Opera House ‘now we reach a very special point in the evening’, Sir Elton replied: ‘What, you are going to have another drink?’

A bleary-eyed Lily, dressed demurely in a full-length ball gown, responded: ‘F*** off Elton, I’m 40 years younger than you, I have my whole life ahead of me.’

But these days, apart from a few night’s out partying with her hellraiser U.S. actress friend, Lindsay Lohan, Lily has remained virtually ‘scandal free’.

And the star has clearly managed to pull things together for her recent second album, It’s Not Me, It’s You, which debuted at number one in the UK charts and was in the top five Stateside.

From The Daily Mail

So is Lily really “scandal free” now? Maybe, maybe not. She’s still been doing a few crazy things the past few months, but nothing major. I think she probably went through a partying phase, as many people do in their late teens/early twenties. Perhaps it took her a few years to realize her drunken actions were being analyzed all over the world. Or maybe that was what she wanted – by creating a “bad girl” image for herself, she got thousands, if not millions of fans.

Her party-girl image is because of her behaviour. More than once she has been photographed as a drunken slag falling out of or being carried out of places.

  2. Wonder Woman says:

Okay lily when your so wasted that you dont even notice that you are flashing your nasty crotch in photographers faces its safe to assume people will refer you as a drunk. thier is a difference here lady

  3. ! says:

Oh give me a break. I see its still the hip thing to slag on Lily Allen. When guys hit the town, nothing is ever said. You don’t ever see headlines screaming “OMG ADRIEN GRENIER DRUNK!!!!!” or what have you. When guys go out frequently, its seen as guys going out, mixing it up, hitting the town, having fun. When a girl goes out frequently, its seen as destructive behavior.

  4. ! says:

And may I remind all of you that we all make a few faux pas when drunk, and I’m sure if guys wore garments that exposed the crotch then we’d be seeing some man junk every now and again!

  5. Zoe (The Other One) says:

I dread to think of the photos that would be in existence of me falling out of clubs and bars drunk as a skunk if there were a herd of photographers waiting outside to capture my every move. Thankfully they aren’t and I can be a drunken mess and not have to see the photographic evidence the next day. Lily has got it bang on – it’s sexism pure and simple – I can’t think of the last time we saw a story dissing a guy for being drunk on a night out.

  6. Don'tStopBecause says:

@! I think you have a point. How many times do we see man-slaggs hauled out of places? Not very often.

And, I’m not one for defending celebs, but Lily did have a miscarriage early last year. I’m sure that ANYONE who looked forward to having a child would be devastated by that. Perhaps her partying was a way of dealing with that loss, or maybe her ‘partyhard’ persona was her way to deflect the pain such a loss can cause. Anyway, I’ll always have a soft spot for her, for reasons not quite known…

  7. grisgris says:

If there were pictures of my drunken antics at her age…I shudder to think. I lived on a diet of vodka and Marlboro Reds for a good 10 years and I loved me some boys. If I was rich and famous I would have been infinitely worse.

  8. Jane says:

I so agree with her. You NEVER see stories about a man when he does something like this. And people still consider her a party girl with no talent or morals, yet Michael Phelps smokes pot and has a DUI.

  9. Ally says:

I totes agree. Lily is great, and even more airheaded adult girl celebs are entitled to party. It’s those are are ignorant idiots even when they’re sober who bug me — and that applies to both genders.

Lily is clever, witty and a great singer-songwriter. As long as she doesn’t drown her talent in booze, I withhold judgement!

  10. C-DUB says:

It’s not the partying…..it’s the beating up paps! LOL!! Let her party if she wants to!!!

  11. Emma says:

I’m all for any woman, doing anything, anytime, but the comments were made on the View, and we all know what evil bitches they are. They do this on purpose. The train wreck comment that Lily Allen mentions, is from an article, that Perez Hilton wrote in June 2008. The fight, with the French girl (outside of Ronnie Scott”s night club) is from August 2008, the G.Q. awards with Elton John is from September, 2008. Do you see a pattern? even when Lily Allen went out and got her drink on, it was about, ever two weeks or so, or once a month. Ever since the Glamour awards, the press has been nailing Lily Allen for being drunk, these are the same people that average 10,000 picture a year of Lily Allen when she’s sober, they want you to call her a drunk! don’t be stupid. Everything that was used on the view is from last year. Lily Allen life has changed, in the past 8 months. Kicking a paparazzi and getting a restraining order changed everything!

  12. Vibius says:

This is why I just tune out when people whine about sexism. Its a cop out 90% of the time from someone who just doesn’t want to admit that they screwed up.

Example: Katie Couric being sexist with Palin.

  13. hannah says:

Its true…with all the women in hollywood who are portrayed(maybe accurately) as drunks…how many men are? i mean, some of the guys who we idolize are total drunks!

Also, this continues with our ability to percieve talent. How many great actors/musicians can you think of off the top of your head?
how many are women? with more women in the world, it isn’t possible that there are so many more talented men than women, it’s not possible. yet we view(i’m guilty as well) women as talentless far more often than men, as well as being much more critical of their appearance

  14. kxx says:

like she told Elton – she still has her whole life ahead of her. I think everyone goes through a bit of a wild phase at that age – Im just getting getting over mine – last summer i was wrecked every. single. weekend.

Im just jealous of all her lovely chanel clothes!!

  15. james p. says:

You know, somehow, Iv’ always believed that Lindsay, Lohan is not the mess that the tabloids say she is, and as argumentative as it might sound, Amy Winehouse doesn’t have as many problems. This isn’t just based on loose public opinion, when Lindsay Lohan speaks she sounds and seems like a better person than people write about. Emma (comment # 11 has some good points. I don’t listen to Lily Allen’s music either, but I’m Not going to dislike her for it.
