Ivanka Trump refuses to be called a White House employee despite being one

Ivanka Trump & Jared Kushner Holding Hands In Aspen

Here are some photos of Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner out and about in Aspen. While Ivanka and her brothers flew to Aspen last weekend, Jared waited a few days before joining Ivanka and their kids. Meaning… Jared has been MIA in Washington this week. I was going to say “that’s probably why Bigly Boy has been having such a rough week,” but honestly, I don’t think Kushner’s presence makes that big of a difference. Bigly Boy’s chaos cannot be controlled, not even by his favorite child and her husband. Speaking of chaos, people are still freaking out about Ivanka’s new West Wing role. She’s not technically an employee and she’s not being paid… so it’s an ethical quagmire.

President Donald Trump’s daughter Ivanka Trump will have a security clearance, a West Wing office and the ear of her father on important policy matters. But don’t call her an employee. When it comes to government work, “employee” is more than just a word. That designation triggers an array of transparency and ethical provisions, including a law prohibiting conflicts of interest. Government watchdogs are concerned that by refusing to call Ivanka Trump an employee, White House counsel Don McGahn could be attempting to give her a loophole if she improperly mingles her government policy roles with her business and financial interests.

In a letter Friday to McGahn, they ask him to reconsider, saying the position as designed “creates a middle space that does not exist.” It is signed by two former White House lawyers and three other transparency and ethics advocates, all of whom have been highly critical of the Trump administration’s approach to ethics.

“On the one hand, her position will provide her with the privileges and opportunities for service that attach to being a White House employee,” they write. “On the other hand, she remains the owner of a private business who is free from the ethics and conflicts rules that apply to all White House employees.”

The White House rejects that notion. As an adult first daughter with an interest in politics and a clothing and lifestyle brand of her own, Ivanka Trump is in an unprecedented situation. There’s no protocol for this, said a senior White House official who requested anonymity to discuss a personnel matter. She’s family, not an employee. Another person close to Ivanka Trump earlier told The Associated Press that Ivanka believes she can offer more independent perspective to her father by not serving as a White House staffer.

Richard Painter, one of the letter’s signatories and President George W. Bush’s chief ethics counselor, said he cannot recall a White House that had such high-powered “non-employees.”

Ivanka Trump is choosing to be in a less formal role than her husband, Jared Kushner, who is a senior adviser to the president and, as an employee, must follow the rules. She has relinquished control of her brand but, like her father, continues to own and financially benefit from her businesses. She will “voluntarily comply with the rules that would apply if she were a government employee, even though she is not,” her attorney Jamie Gorelick said this week.

[From The Associated Press via ABC News]

The thing that gets me is Ivanka’s insistence that she “believes she can offer more independent perspective to her father by not serving as a White House staffer.” Like, in what world is that a reasonable argument? Any president can have informal advisers, or friends or even family members outside of the government apparatus, in what is commonly known as a “Kitchen Cabinet.” If Ivanka wants to be her father’s informal adviser, sounding board and champion, sure, that’s fine and there’s nothing that can be done about. But don’t take a West Wing office. Don’t get a government-issued phone and don’t get a security clearance. Those are the privileges of an employee. This is such a f–king mess.

  1. EOA says:

She can think whatever she wants but what she’s really saying is that she doesn’t want to test the nepotism laws, IMO.

    • Frida_K says:

That, and–though she promises to follow ethics laws–she doesn’t want to be actually legally bound to them. Then, when her little oopsies and minor lapses (oopsies and minor lapses in HER eyes, anyway; for the rest of us, they will be stunning cash grabs and appalling examples of grifting) come to light, she is not really an employee, so what can be done?

This is deliberate. We know, she knows, everyone knows.

      • Megan says:

She has greatly over estimated her public persona. She is not the beloved first daughter she thinks she is.

    • oce says:

This goes beyond future grifting. Ivanka’s new role is really going to be POTUS-in-training. That’s what the dog and pony show is about with the kid pictures and. Trying to create some new kind of dynasty with their whole family. Trump is grooming Ivanka now: she will get a Top Secret clearance with access to all top govt officials + POTUS advisor role + own a cause (women issues in the workplace) + top access to what/whom truly runs America. Just wait for her announcement years from now. #WatchThisSpace #MyPredictionsAreAlwaysRightEvenWhenIWishIWasWrong

  2. Mia4s says:

Won’t call yourself a White House employee? Then get your useless, complicit ass out of the White House you waste of good oxygen.

    • CTgirl says:

If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, quacks like a duck and craps like a duck . . . The disingenuous idea that she’s not an employee is ludicrous.

  3. Esmom says:

I don’t know why I should this family might demonstrate a shred of ethics or decency — at least occasionally — when Trump took office. It must have been election night sleeplessness and wishful thinking. I’d say how can they even look in the mirror but clearly they have zero capacity for shame or humility.

    • Mike says:

I think she is lining up contacts for her own business and future prospects. She is a grifter just like her father.

      • Megan says:

I assume she is looking to make trade deals to sell her crap overseas.

Last night someone told me they were recently in Havana and saw a Trump branded product in a shop.

  4. Nancy says:

    Complicit. Go away.

  5. emilybyrd says:

I can’t stand the smug smile on Jared’s face in these pictures. Ugh.

    • PunkyMomma says:

      He’s so smarmy. Ew.

    • bluhare says:

My thought exactly. The smug is strong with that one.

    • Lama Bean says:

I can’t stand either of them. I don’t think she’s gorgeous. At certain angles he looks like the most evil man hung ever. Both of them are grifters too. Every single pic of them screams no chemistry. How they have kids is beyond me, because that would imply they have s*x and they both look like slightly malformed Barbie and Ken dolls with no s*x parts. It’s all appearance. It’s all show. The goal is the get as much money as possible. I’m convinced the relationship is based on power and money. Ughhhhhh.

      • minx says:

They both make me sick. He was passable when they married but he has gone downhill–he’s lost weight or something and looks alternately creepy/smarmy. Also, he is in deep with all the Russian shenanigans. She is just all plastic–nose, cheeks, boobs, teeth. Her face is settling and the work is starting to look peculiar.

      • Mathilde says:

She looks beautiful in pictures, but as soon as she starts to speak, all I can see are those huge tombstone teeth, the ice cold calculated preening and posing and the lies and corruption that come out of her mouth.

      • Lama Bean says:

        tombstone teeth. LMAOOOOOOO

      • Annetommy says:

        Maria Sharapova’s plainer sister.

    • Shambles says:

My gaydar is screaming at these pictures of him

    • anonymous says:

      he looks so evil.

    • Kitten says:

      He’s a f*cking DORK, dude.

    • cynic says:

@emilybrd: That was my first thought, also, when I looked at the picture.

  6. Eric says:

It seems there may be a problem if she’s not sworn in. Grifters abound, Watson! The Game is on!

PS: keep an eye on Rick Gates, a friend of that “gentleman” Manafort, who still is linked to the WH.

  7. mia girl says:

I wonder if it’s her husband who most wants the security clearance for her. He needs all the help he can get trying to control Baby Trump and as he is under rules, there is a lot of classified stuff he can’t share/speak to his wife about. Not that I’m saying he’s actually following the rules currently, but this would make it much easier and cleaner for these two to discuss and work in tandem.

    • Juls says:

My grandma was talking about Kushner yesterday, how he has been really quiet lately but is always seen hovering behind Cheetolini like a ghost. And it occurred to me, what if he is the leak inside the WH? Wouldn’t that be delicious, and hilarious?

      • HappyMom says:

I think they’re ALL leaking. Kellyann is supposed to be like a sieve-so when she’s out there decrying all the leaks it’s insane.

    • Lightpurple says:

I really don’t think they are trying to control him. If their own statements and actions are any indication, the Trumps see absolutely nothing wrong with his outlandish behavior. Junior’s tweets congratulate and encourage the most outrageous and bigoted stunts he pulls. Princess Plastic and her money grubbing consort aren’t there to control or tone down. They are there to aid & abet and maximize the self-dealing for the benefits of Trump Corp

  8. Guest says:

Then get your bitch ass out of the WH. Man, I would really like to see Trump and his “wife” Ivanka in orange overalls.

  9. tw says:

There is something about Kushner’s lady hips that is really bothering me.

    • minx says:

Yeah, what’s going on there? In recent photos he almost looks like he’s transitioning. No wonder she’s drooling at Justin Trudeau.

    • Sullivan says:

      His hips don’t lie.

    • Aarika says:

RIGHT? He really has feminine mannerism and face and hips. Child bearing hips.

    • perplexed says:

Yeah, these photos made me go “huh.” He looks fine in a suit, but here..I’m questioning whether he is actually attracted to Ivanka in a sexual way.

  10. Ophelia says:

She’s not so subtly saying, “If it doesn’t involve the words First and Lady, then I don’t want to hear it.”

Anyhow, Kitchen Cabinet should really be Bathroom Cabinet, of which she is Chief. She holds and doses all her dad’s medicine.

  11. MousyB says:

If shes really just informally counseling/advising her dad, why does she need all the benefits of an employee?? The amount this family and administration has gotten away with never ceases to amaze me. Also, cant she see this is all crumbling?? Is she so delusional she thinks she can fix it without ANY govt expertise/knowledge?? These people man…

  12. trollontheloose says:

Corruption, much? i’ve been following the french campaign for presidency and 3 of the candidates have the same problem: hiring family for a few hours and give them huge amount of money and no tax filed. Francois Fillion who is the lead for “la droite” ie our republican party gave his wife almost 500,000.00 and about 300,000.00 euros for his 2 kids that “wanted to be lawyer”.. I loathe fact that we pay for Ivanka, Melania and co when they just are entitled priviledge white women. And I have to remember everything that Michelle went through.

  13. Lightpurple says:

“Family, not an employee?” Well, family pays rent. Cough it up or get your butt out of the building. By the way, oh Princess Plastic, any communications on a White House device are public record.

  14. SusanneToo says:

She’s receiving a government office containing, no doubt, computers, phones, consumable supplies, and probably assistants, all of which we are paying for, because it is a well known fact the grifters don’t pay for anything they can con. How does this bypass the ethics laws? It stinks to high heaven.

For about five years we teachers in the state of Alabama had to fill out annual ethics forms and list any gift we received from a student that cost more than a mug filled with Hershey’s Kisses. Apparently, the Republicans who controlled every State office felt I might change a grade for a box of Whitman’s chocolates. But I assure you, my ethics are higher than any trumps.
That requirement went away once our (R)Speaker of the House was removed for felonious kickbacks and our Bible thumping Governor will be impeached or resign for using State money on his Advisor/Honeybun. His wife of 50 years promptly divorced him once she had the secret recordings that were as embarrassing as the Charles/tampon ones. Gotta love it when the party of Family Values gets caught.

    • addie says:

It always amuses me that these good ol’ ‘family values’ republican folks have lots of dirty linen. I look at the latest picture of Trump’s Cabinet and just wonder what crap they get up to and how I’d bet everyone of them needs Viagra. The Viagra Cabinet.

As for the Little Missy, I hope the Ehtics Office insists she is all in as an employee or out the door. Great idea to call for her phone records when it is least expected, and often. Have her on the jump all the time. I guess this is one way the people can surveil her as they wish.

  15. RussianBlueCat says:

I find it funny how we see more photos of the first daughter and her husband together, than we see of the President and his wife. Melania will not move to Washington, even if she did she would hide out in the White House. Ivanka has basically taken over the role of First Lady.

  16. hoopjumper says:

How the f*ck can someone get a security clearance without being an employee? I know very little about DC, so am genuinely interested in the mechanics of this.

  17. Izzy says:

    Grifters gonna grift.

Jared certainly loves the limelight, doesn’t he?

  18. HappyMom says:

And like I’ve said from the beginning-if Hillary had won, and this was Chelsea getting an office, the Fox News minions would be FLIPPING out and we would not hear the end of this.

  19. Erica says:

I’m just astounded at how much shady stuff the Orange One’s administration have done and that the Republicans seem to back him. I guess we have two First ladies, this is the first time this has ever happened. I think the whole clan think they are the new Kennedy’s. They think also think they have such great political insight that can share with no experience to back it up.

  20. Abbess Tansy says:

If she’s not an employee then she needs to cough up the rent. Pay up, puta.

  21. Tiffany says:

Boy, when the subpoenas and warrants start to hit, those two will turn on each other so fast. There will be no love lost.

  22. nic919 says:

Hey remember when they bitched about how Hillary wanted to help with health care and she was a qualified attorney who held actual jobs at companies not owned by daddy? This is utterly ridiculous. The GOP needs to go down in flames for a century for allowing this shit show treason and corruption to continue any moment longer.

SHUT THIS GRIFTER TRAITOR FAMILY DOWN NOW !

    • HappyMom says:

Yes-I am old enough to remember how people freaked out when Bill put Hillary in charge of developing a health care plan.

    • brincalhona says:

Yep, totally hypocritical. Sorry, too many syllables in that word. I meant to type ‘sad’.

    • mary mary says:

Speaking of Health Care: Ivanka Trump has been silent regarding Health care.
The bill does not require insurance provisions for services like prenatal and maternity care, which Ms. Trump pushed during her father’s campaign. Ivanka played an influential role in then-President-elect Donald Trump’s child care policy and push to guarantee six weeks of maternity leave, but she has been silent on the Republican health care bill. Was this just an election lure to get votes? “Many senators from both parties are really disturbed by what they’re seeing in terms of taking away basic access to health care, making more people uninsured, and definitely taking away things like maternity benefits for women,” Richards said. Ivanka’s silence on this bill in particular is “deafening.” http://www.rawstory.com/2017/03/her-silence-is-deafening-planned-parenthood-ceo-slams-ivanka-for-not-standing-up-for-womens-health/?comments=disqus

  23. xena says:

I can’t blieve it. I am not US-american, but I am watching this and I can’t believe it. Not the most eloquent comment, but I am just bewildered. The audacity to come up with such an argument to justify this move. In the face of people who have to play by the rules jobwise.
What does it take to stop them? A national strike? I mean seriously, at this point it feels like a march to Washington is needed and the presidency just began.

    • HappyMom says:

Until Republicans grow a spine, there really is no way to shut this down.

    • Kitten says:

The majority of Americans are right there with you. I’m still in awe at what is happening: the rapid decimation of democracy and the civil liberties we hold so dearly, the unprecedented gutting of domestic programs…it’s almost unfathomable that this is occurring here.

  24. jerkface says:

She refuses to be called a shady *sshole too even though she is one.

  25. LondonLozza says:

I can’t even begin to comprehend the issues she is causing and refusing to acknowledge. Instead, all I’ve got is that I’ve saved up ages for those sunglasses and now I just Can’t. Yes I am being that shallow.

  26. Digital Unicorn (aka Betti) says:

He’s holding her hand the same way Trump held Theresa May’s hand.

  27. brincalhona says:

Every time I see her now I hear Guantanamera as I dream of a future for her. I think she’d look lovely in orange. Unfortunately, it would just make her dad look naked.

  28. Svea says:

So she can still sell her schmattes.

  29. Atomic Rat says:

I thought you had to be hired, and get paid, in order to be an employee.

I think you can be a sycophant for free, though.

Probably shouldn’t let her carry the top secret stuff around, though.
