A few days ago, Page Six had an interesting item about Michelle and Barack Obama’s future living arrangements. They’re living in a posh part of Washington right now, as their younger daughter (Sasha) finishes high school. I think Sasha graduates next year? Probably. And once that happens, the Obamas want to get out of Washington. There’s been a lot of gossip about where they’ll end up, whether it will be Hawaii, LA, Chicago… or even New York. Page Six says that the Obamas are “eyeing an apartment in a historic building in Manhattan.” The apartment is on the Upper East Side and close to Gracie Mansion (the mayor’s residence). The apartment would likely cost tens of millions of dollars. You can read more about it here.
I bring up the Obamas’ adventures in real estate because the Obamas are pretty rich now. They both scored lucrative book deals, and both are making money on the lecture circuit, likely getting $400K or more per speech. I don’t think Michelle is doing that many paid speeches though – whenever we hear about her, she’s usually making appearances at conferences for women’s issues, and I doubt those conferences have that kind of major money to spread around. This week, Michelle appeared at the Pennsylvania Conference for Women, where she was interviewed by Shonda Rhimes. Some highlights from the conversation:
Life with her husband as president: “For the last eight years, we had a standard of ethics, a lot of constraints. What it means to have a commander-in-chief that actually upholds the standards of the White House,” Obama joked as the audience cheered.
Women have to be all things to all people: “We as women feel like we have to be perfect all of the time. We worry too much about that. Women, minorities, the bars are different. We experienced that over the last eight years. The bar just kept moving. We’re seeing that now, quite frankly. The bar is just—,” Obama abruptly stopped, laughing as she lowered her hand further down.
How kids are handling the changes this year: “I think they’re more open in ways and less tolerant of obvious inequities. This generation will look at what is happening now in the world and say, ‘This doesn’t feel right,’ because they know what they were taught. They’ve been raised with an openness. Many kids today only know that Barack Obama was their president. They grew up only under hope and opportunity. I think now they will be less tolerant and feel some of what is happening now as what they intrinsically know is not what they were taught.”
Michelle just continues to talk about Trump without even saying his name. Part of my immediate post-election depression was the thought of how certain people felt about Baby Fists Trump becoming president – I still choke up when I think of Khizr Khan and I still choke up when I think of how Michelle must have reacted. So… on one side, I’m happy that she’s okay, that she’s able to get out bed, that she is still optimistic about the country and our future as a nation. On the other side, I wish both Obamas would come out and be honest about how much this f–king sucks, you know?

I miss Michelle.
They warned people in advance how much it would suck and dumbasses still voted for the garbage bag full of Cheetos. Again, like when people kept saying she should run for president- they did their jobs and did them for EIGHT YEARS- what more do you want from them?
Yes, Michelle warned people what would happen. Everything that Michelle says is true.
Barack warned us, Michelle warned us, Hilary warned us, about Trump.
The hateful words out of Trumps own mouth were evident during the campaign. He hasn’t changed one bit.
Yeah, it’s still pretty scary how many dumbasses actually voted for this racist POS! It certainly says a lot about their character, or should I say lack of character.
Trump would lose his mind if Obama criticized him by name. I think its wise not to do that, trying to keep things mellow. Trump is unpredictable and incompetent, when he is out of the WH Obama can speak the truth.
Personally, I wish they would speak their mind now.. And I wish Kelly would stop blocking my view of the incompetence of the current WH.
It physically hurts to watch either President Obama or Michelle speak and realize what we have lost.
Same
This. So much. 😞
I cannot even look at photos of them without feeling pained. We had it so good.
I was in the room yesterday. I have to say that my friends and I were all excited and inspired and then depressed. We all felt the same way. Something that we were looking forward to for weeks…we left like…. wtf just happened? What has this country done? My sadness came back just like election night and I sat and started bawling.
Michelle is beautiful, smart, wise and gracious. Watching her was like sitting around with your girls talking about life and how best to navigate through it.
I love her. She is truly an amazing person.
When I see Michelle and listen to her speak it hits home more than ever how NOT normal and deviant Trump is as president.
I like to think I truly appreciated the Obamas when they were in the White House but with Trump, I find myself actively missing them. I seek out news stories about them and follow them both on Twitter and Instagram. I actually bought a 2018 Obama wall calendar because I want to see them every month! I just feel better knowing they’re out there in the world, particularly Michelle as she doesn’t hide her feelings under as much diplomacy as her husband must do as a former president, so we know she feels exactly the same way we do about Trump!
I feel the exact same way.
He sure did, Michelle! 👍🏼🙌🏼👊🏽👍🏼 I miss them soooo much.
Trump? 🖕🏾🖕🏽🖕🏻🖕🏼🖕
I saw a clip of her speaking at this event last night and wanted to cry. It’s too hard to listen to her or Barack at this point considering the circumstances.
As someone said above, it’s physically painful.
interesting how no one here finds it rotten that the obamas are suddenly worth hundreds of millions. if bush had done the same, you would have rightfully said, corruption. very few of any authors get 60m signing bonus- that just seems like a kickback to me. Regardless of party, our presidents are selling our country and our interests to ththe rich, and getting paid as speaking fees and book deals. It’s a corrupt world and i miss jimmy carters basic honesty and decency. Everyone after him has been corrupt as hell.
As the first black POTUS and FLOTUS, they have a unique story to tell. So why wouldn’t they get that kind of signing bonus?? And why would you care that they are receiving that kind of money for their memoirs once they are out of office? Kickback from the publishing industry? Would that be for keeping paper costs low while in office?
Probably because they aren’t worth hundreds of millions. They make hundreds of thousands doing speeches, but I am okay with a former leader of the world making a lot of money after they leave office. They put in more time than they get compensated for.
So hard to watch and listen to Michelle while being stuck in this long nightmare of Trumplandia.
Michelle 2020.
I’m just waiting for Ashton Kutcher to burst onto the news and tell us that we’ve been punk’d – Obama is still POTUS, Michelle is still the most bomb ass FLOTUS, and that y’all got us good. And we’d laugh…like really – we for real though a pussy grabbing baby fisted cheeto with no political experience could be president??
I’d cry. I’d cry such tears of unbridled joy.
