In July of this year, Justin Bieber suddenly canceled his Purpose tour. At first, the excuse was that Bieber was “just over it,” a sort of tantrum-y baby version of ennui. Then we heard that Bieber was actually canceling his tour because he had rediscovered Jesus and he wanted to get serious about his Christian faith. In the months that followed, I have been surprised that Bieber has been so low-key, just in general. He’s not falling out of nightclubs every night. He’s not traveling that much. He’s been staying in LA, and when he does get pap’d, it’s usually as he’s going back and forth from Hillsong, the church founded by Carl Lentz. Lentz and Bieber have been tight for years, and Lentz was given credit this year for the whole new Bieber we see before us – Low Key Baby Biebz, full of contrition and sadness. That was his angle when he re-seduced Selena Gomez too – he wanted to make it right with her after so many years of treating her poorly. Put a pin in that.
The thing to keep your eye on for the moment is Bieber’s relationship with Carl Lentz, who is often called the pastor to the rich and famous. Even more specifically, Lentz seems to be targeting the Hollywood “kids” – the nepotism models, the children of the famous, the child-stars transitioning to adult actors. Bieber is just one of many in that group, but Bieber is perhaps Lentz’s biggest fish. And Post Malone is calling it out:
Post Malone recently lamented, in a revealing Rolling Stone profile, that his friend Justin Bieber has turned “super-religious” and “real culty,” claiming the pop star had donated $10 million to Hillsong, the megachurch he belongs to. “It’s nice to support something you believe in, I guess,” the rapper said. “But people are spending so much money, and God doesn’t care that your church has a f–king gold roof.”
Now Carl Lentz, pastor at Hillsong New York City, has refuted those claims, telling RS, “I put no stock in comments made by people who know absolutely nothing about the subject they are speaking on. I do not know Post Malone, and I have no idea why he would say reckless things about our church, which he has never visited. Justin has not given our church $10 million, and we do not have gold ceilings. We do not even own a church building. So that gives you a little insight about how serious you can take his observations about anything to do with us.”
Despite the tension, Lentz added that he’s still a Post Malone fan. “He is a very gifted artist,” he said, “and I wish him nothing but the best.”
In Rolling Stone’s original, wide-ranging story, a source close to Bieber also denied that he’s donated $10 million. During the same conversation, Post Malone labeled the mega-church “a total cult” while praising the Purpose singer as a “f–king awesome, great dude” and “genuine friend.”
Post Malone’s claim has been picked up by other outlets, and Star Magazine did a story about it too. A source tells Star:
“Carl knows that Justin is hugely influential and will bring other high-profile, rich celebs to Hillsong,” says a source, noting that the church was not only founded by an accused pedophile, it has been repeatedly accused of financial wrongdoing. “Hillsong may seem progressive but make no mistake, Carl is very aggressive about getting his parishioners to fork over their cash. But Justin doesn’t mind – he’s worth more than $300 million and is convinced helping the church will get him closer to Jesus.”

What’s more likely? That Post Malone was just talking out of his ass, or that Bieber has been ensnared by a charismatic religious figure who convinced him to donate a check for $10 million? I think both scenarios are pretty likely, honestly. I think Carl Lentz is shady as hell. I think Bieber wants so badly to be centered that he would write this kind of check to a pastor who showed interest in “the real Bieber.” And I also think that Post Malone might be talking out of his ass. Keep your eye on all of this though.

I hear there are spots at Scientology opening up for a generous donation
Can you even imagine being worth $300 million? I’m not religious, but I would expect donating that $10 million straight to good charities/causes would bring you closer to God than donating to a shifty church.
I am aware of Hillsong church. I don’t believe the $10millon donation. Perhaps, he gives monthly tithes and offering, which most Christians do. I won’t fault anyone for their faith. I won’t fault the pastor for engaging with young Hollywood kids, as long ad they are not taken advantage of. If JB can find is center there and be a better man because of his faith. God for him.
Like you said both things can be true. He probably IS talking out of his ass when it comes to specifics but he seems right in general. Super shady cult. Wouldnt surprise me if they also try to lure Selena Gomez into it and build them as their super couple.
They essentially already HAVE her. I don’t follow her closely/regularly enough to know for sure whether or not she was big into it before reuniting with Biebs, although thinking about it I think I DO remember reading about her going there when she was still with Abel. Regardless, since getting back with Justin, she’s been seen there a LOT- seems to be multiple times most weeks, to judge by pap shots. Some of her close friends seem to be really, REALLY into it as well, going by instagram.
they ‘have’ her but in Los Angeles. ben is the pastor “leading” that congregation.
So Hillsong is the new Scientology essentially
Yes. Hillsong is a cult , just like CoS.
Hillsong is essentially the ‘Christian’ version of Scientology. It was founded in Australia in the 80s, and exploits its members in many of the same ways CoS does, including a Sea Org-esque free labor indentureship… it’s disgusting.
This is a cult. Flat out. I’m not religious at all, but if I was, I’d hopefully recognize that god and spirituality can be found anywhere for free. You can go anywhere in nature, where JB has the power and resources to get to, and connect with any being you wish to support. This Hillsong church and the douche who runs it is in for the money and fame. Period.
I will be keeping my eye on this.
Hillsong has a really interesting strategy in Australia. They put people up to compete in Australian Idol, then the “congregation” were told to vote for them as a form of tythe. We had a run of Hillsong nuts win the competition.
Ugh Hillsong. I don’t know much about them, but they seem so culty. I have a friend who moved from LA to NYC, although she has never been super religious, she goes to church every Sunday. Her dad is a pastor. She moved to NYC for grad school. Her roommates though are pretty religious. I was hanging out with her one Saturday night and slept over. The next day as I headed downtown, they were going to Times Square for church. They invited me to go to church with them. I’ve never been to church, except for weddings. I was curious, turns our their church is Hillsong. I was like nope, no thanks.
I get the creepiest feelings from this particular church.
“that Bieber has been ensnared by a charismatic religious figure who convinced him to donate a check for $10 million”
100%. I was part of that church for years. I stayed on for so long in a desperate attempt to find a spiritual family and because it felt like I was part of something bigger than myself. However, the leadership is incredibly cliquey and that inevitably trickled down to the congregation; also, the good they do in the community is questionable.
It would shock me to see them with designer wear and such (which is fine… if they didn’t buy that with our tithes!) while we literally had people – fellow congregation members – without shelter/basic necessities. They pour so much $ into renting huge theaters (with a big chuck of front rows reserved for the VIPs), and paying their staff (more than 50% of their budget goes to that, according to a graphic they showed the people in one of their services back in 2016 when I was living in NYC), while investing SO little into really helping their community whether it be in LA or NYC. Those were the only two cities I lived in where there was a Hillsong so I can’t speak for the rest.
I remember a sweet gal with a daughter that was living in a shelter. All she got from the Brooklyn Hillsong community group was ‘oh this is just to test your faith, you’re showing Jesus in that place.’ I gave her what I could (like toilet paper) with the limited budget I had at the time.
smh, never again will I let myself be ensnared by this kind of group stuff. totally turned me off to organized religion, specifically christianity.
expose hilllsong. it’s long overdue.
