Is Angelina Jolie concerned that ‘Without Blood’ could become her ‘Norbit’?

Angelina Jolie is currently promoting two films – her “comeback role” in Pablo Larrain’s Maria, and her latest directorial effort, Without Blood. Both films have premiered at various film festivals, although only one of them has gotten good reviews. It’s clear that Maria will be Angelina’s Oscar-bait film and Netflix is likely building a campaign for Jolie and putting real money into it. But what about Without Blood? Well, the reviews are middling-to-bad, with most critics pointing to the terrible adapted script more than Jolie’s direction (Jolie co-wrote the adaptation though). So will Without Blood become Jolie’s “Norbit”? LMAO. I don’t think it’s that bad, but the next few months will be interesting.

Angelina Jolie has high award hopes for her new biopic, Maria, but she’s endured savage reviews for her other most recent directorial endeavor, Without Blood, which has left her with a serious embarrassment, a source close to the actress’ team exclusively tells In Touch.

“Angelina is a little annoyed that she’s having to juggle the solid success of Maria, which has firmly put her in the Oscar race and back into business with Netflix, and her passion project Without Blood,” the source says.

The pal adds that Without Blood was “a movie Angelina thought could change the world when she first initiated it, but which now is stained by apathetic reviews and a weak audience response at its film festival debut.”

Her latest attempt at adapting Alessandro Baricco’s novel about the lingering horror of surviving violence missed its mark with critics. Without an identifiable conflict to study through the film, The Guardian’s Radheyan Simonpillai says Angie’s attempt “leaves its mismatched stars, Salma Hayek Pinault and Demián Bichir, flailing with words, anecdotes and frustratingly tedious and abstract conversations that feel like they’re searching for meaning.” Maria, on the other hand, has been billed as Angelina’s big comeback movie.

“As both movies march toward being seen by the broader public,” the insider continues, “Angelina is going to have to thread the needle here a bit, especially because she has always seen directing as a way to stay in the business once she ages out these leading lady roles. She wants to direct more movies, in no uncertain terms, and she has installed a whole team around her for those projects that will follow her into the gates of hell to get these films made. But the trick is, they have to make money and nobody thinks Without Blood can make a profit.”

As a second source previously dished to In Touch, “Angelina and Salma have a deep, ongoing collaboration that hasn’t let up since they shot Eternals together almost six years ago.”

The first source continues, “The upside here is that the movie really deepened her already-strong friendship with Salma Hayek, and Salma has billions of dollars and the ability to fully finance films that she’s passionate about. That didn’t happen on Without Blood but it’s certainly on the table the next time Angelina steps behind the camera.”

[From In Touch Weekly]

Jolie actually did Without Blood as part of a three-year deal she inked with Fremantle in 2022, and Fremantle is supposed to be the worldwide distributor of the film. As of this writing, Without Blood does not have a release date, and it doesn’t look like anyone’s trying to get this film out this year. It could possibly be dumped on a streamer or VOD or given a brief theatrical run at some point next year. The point is that I doubt Jolie is that worried that Without Blood will affect her Oscar campaign for Maria, but I bet she’s not happy about the poor reviews and the fact that no one really wants to buy the film or really distribute it.

Sorry, not related but it just popped up in El Nacional, a well known catalan newspaper. It’s all about William wanting to divorce prior to Kate’s health issues: https://www.elnacional.cat/enblau/ca/casa-reial/princep-guillem-tenia-decidit-separar-se-kate-middleton-abans-cancer_1328100_102.html

I know 2 people who saw Without Blood at TIFF and said there were many walkouts at the screening.🙁🙁🙁🙁🙁

The smart this for Jolie is to pivot to TV productions.

Her big screen outputs either underwhelm – Unbroken, or flop – By The Sea; Without Blood; Land of Blood & Honey.

She should regroup and focus on her documentaries for the small screen, building a strong BTS portfolio and her own capabilities.

This route she’s going of critical & commercial misfires ain’t sustainable.

I agree, most of her directing projects have not been very successful. On the other hand, they’re usually small budget, sort of obscure projects, so I don’t see it really harming her overall. It’s not like someone handed her $300 million to make a Marvel movie that flopped.
My guess is she’ll get back into acting more, and use that to do smaller passion projects like these.

The comment about Salma’s billions is kind of odd. If Salma had billions sitting around to make films, wouldn’t she direct them herself?

@Jegede Unbroken was a commercial success, First they killed my father was a critical success.

Worry about your fav Pitt having back to back bombing films Babylon, wolfs and his next one the F1 with 300 millions budget he has been filming for YEARS now and it’s going to bomb next yearstoo, instead of pretending you are worried about Angelina’s career LOL

Eventually people will realize that it’s unnecessary to bring up a person’s past every time something is written about them. This includes the mention of former lovers, ex spouses, stints in rehab, etc. Angelina Jolie is an accomplished actor, director and producer. I agree she should shift her focus to more independent fare.

Honestly the movies that she makes as a writer/director are all terrible. If there’s a certain kind of story that she’s hoping to get out there, she’d likely do better with starting or contributing to a production company — there are plenty of other female filmmakers who would benefit from her money/celebrity.

I saw First They Killed My Father and it intensely harrowing and really interesting. I actually watched it and then found out it was Angelina Jolie directing afterwards. I think she has some talent?

    • Waitwhat? says:

I’m not sure she’s a terrible director, but she’s definitely attracted to very downbeat stories (the Balkan war, the Khmer Rouge, and “the lingering horror of surviving violence”) which I think will always impact profitability.

The only film of hers I’ve seen was By The Sea and, while I could see what she was trying to say, some of it was unintentionally hilarious (I’m especially thinking of the bit where she literally kicks Brad Pitt out of the bed).

      • Lucy2 says:

I think that’s part of it, she’s drawn to stories like that, and the general movie going public wants to go and have fun. There’s definitely a place for stories like that, but they rarely become huge hits, especially without a big studio behind them.

  4. Alwyn says:

Actors often release several projects within months of each other and one rarely negatively impacts another, especially when it comes to awards contenders. The whole Norbit thing was more of an industry inside joke and with no other examples since then of a bad film canceling a good film, it’s one that has been largely forgotten. So far Maria has received modest reviews and it will be interesting to see if Academy voters even remember it next year.

  5. Zut Alors says:

This article from In Touch is just another smear attempt from the deadbeat and his team. Without Blood premiered at TIFF in September. Why is it becoming an issue now? It’s just to gin up negative attention to distract from Angelina’s mostly positive return to the spotlight.

  6. Truth says:

I mean, let me understand! Baricco, the author of the novel on which the film is based, is delighted with the film adaptation made by Angelina, he highly praised it at the Turin Film Festival, and here must we quote and believe In Touch? Really?
