Ariana Grande & Cynthia Erivo wore LV & Dior to the NYC ‘Wicked’ premiere

Here are some photos from last night’s New York premiere of Wicked. This was much more muted than I expected, especially considering the wild popularity of Wicked’s Broadway run. It’s almost like the studio has suddenly dialed back the premieres and promotion because they’re worried about it now? Something else I was thinking about recently is that both Ariana and Cynthia have reputations for being a bit prickly, so it’s sort of amazing that they’ve kept this show on the road and still manage to be so friendly. Even more than friendly – I really buy that they’ve become close friends. There are zero rumors (that I’ve seen) of any beefs or fights or “please don’t make me pose next to her again.”

Fashion notes: Ariana’s pink/fuschia dress is Louis Vuitton, and Cynthia’s ensemble is Dior. I actually love Cynthia’s look. That’s one of the best ensembles she’s worn for the whole promotion. Ari’s LV is so meh. You know they planned out everything and the stylists were coordinating and all of that, so why are Ariana’s custom pieces so overwhelmingly blah? Also: Cynthia changed into a different all-black ensemble and it’s a really great look too (and I think it’s Dior as well).

Some clips and Wicked vocals have already started to come out online, to mixed reviews. I’ll say this… Ariana has the vocal range to pull this off.

Ariana’s facial expressions are so…lofty and confused and contrived?

    • Gubbinal says:

I try to avoid commenting on the “looks” of other women but AG looks like the poster child for an eating disorder. I hope she is getting serious help.

      • HillaryIsAlwaysRight says:

The last time I made a comment like this about someone’s alarming thinness, I got slammed as a body shamer. But I think you’re right about AG. The camera really does add 15 lbs, so imagine what she looks like IRL.

      • Fabiola says:

Ariana looks deathly skinny. I hope she gets the help she needs.

      • theotherviv says:

This. I read somewhere else that Cynthia was asked to lose weight for the promotion tour, likely to fit the racks of clothes in sample sizes the stylists assembled for all the appearances . They are both very thin but Ariana worries me a little, too.

      • mightymolly says:

I’m not going to comment on her body because that does tend to get slammed, but I do worry that she has cosmetic procedures that make her look 15. Everyone in Hollywood is overdoing the cosmetic work at this point, but she doesn’t look like an adult to me, and if that’s intentional, it’s troubling.

      • Pulchritudinous says:

I think it’s deeply irresponsible of the studio to send her out on this publicity/promo tour instead of insisting she get help.

      • Alwyn says:

I don’t want to comment on her body so I’ll just comment on her weight. And as much I hate to comment on a woman’s looks, let me just say one thing about her face. And bodyshaming is really really bad but I think she needs help. Wow

  2. Shoegirl77 says:

If you’d just shown these photos without stating the people in them, I would have been still here tomorrow before guessing Ariana Grande.

    • Enny says:

It’s so strange. It’s such a weird thing to say, but…is Ariana trying to look Japanese? Is this some weird, fetishy cosplay? I don’t want to comment on her weight, she does look sick and we can probably guess why. But I think it’s the makeup and it’s…off? Even off-putting?

      • Jane says:

I came here to say the same thing, except I was guessing Korean. Her make-up makes her look like a K-pop star. Pretty, but bizarre choice.

      • Blair Warner says:

Seriously, Ariana looks very strange … is it surgery? If it’s makeup, why … ?

  3. Barbara says:

Ariana’s makeup artist has really been overdoing it with the concealer/highlighter and white powder. She looks so strange. I wish she’d stop scraping her hair back too.

I like pink a lot but at this point, if I were her, I’d be freaking sick of wearing pink all the time!

    • delphi says:

The flash reflection from all of that highlighter/powder is not helped by the fact that Ariana’s blonde hair is washing her out even more. She’s looking like she has the complexion of a Kewpie doll at this point.

On a side note, I normally HATE sheer tops of dresses that end with a high neck (it ALWAYS looks dated IMHO), but this one is GIVING. Again, all my own opinion, but it looks great on Cynthia. Now, if I tried to wear it with my bowling ball of a head, I’d probably look like a cut-rate Bratz doll, lol.

  4. Mightymolly says:

I don’t know Cynthia’s work. Is she theme dressing for this part or is this a typical look for her? Because she’s absolutely rockin’ it. Meanwhile, Ariana can make the most fabulous style look dull.

  5. Monica says:

Love them both! But ari’s eyebrows?! Why

  6. TN Democrat says:

I really want to support female lead projects and really hate the online trolls that target any creative endeavors that focus on women, POC or LBGTQ issues. But. Lort. I have no desire to see this at all. Splitting the movie in two parts and adding to the costs by overpromoting it were disastrous decisions.

  7. KASalvy says:

Compared to the other premieres, NY looks like everyone’s attending a funeral…

  8. jason says:

I have seen the Wicked stage production. 7 times. This clip is very underwhelming to me. And is that chiron going the entire song?? No. Skip. And I am not a fan of Cynthia’s nose ring.

  9. Jais says:

I really like Cynthia’s dress. I just can’t with Ariana’s eyebrows. She’s obviously beautiful but still nooo to the eyebrows. And final question. I can’t remember who Ethan Slater’s character is in the play. Is he so integral that it makes sense that he’s at all the premiers? Or is it bc he’s dating the star? I genuinely don’t know know bc I don’t have any idea who his character is even though I’ve seen the play twice. I remember the character jonathan bailey plays and the woman in the wheelchair but genuinely cannot remember his character .

  10. L4Frimaire says:

Kinda tired of seeing these two at their nonstop rounds of premiers in the ugliest, most ridiculous clothes. So annoying.

  11. Kirsten says:

I feel like part of the reason to do a film version of something that’s already very, very popular is to get a big exciting Hollywood cast involved and there needs to be more famous people in this. Most of the general film-going public isn’t going to know anyone beyond AG and Jeff Goldblum. And maybe not even AG to be honest.

  12. Becks1 says:

I feel like premieres and promotional tour for this have been going on FOREVER. I’ll go see it (my son is dying to see it after doing part of it at a theater workshop this summer) but I think cutting it into two parts was a mistake. I actually would have loved if they had made it one long movie with an intermission like musicals did back in the 50s/60s.

  13. Grant says:

Not sure where anyone is getting mixed reviews from, all the advance buzz for this movie has been overwhelmingly positive. So many Oscar prognosticators have bumped Ariana into the Top 5 for the Best Supporting Actress Oscar, with people specifically mentioning her vocals. Quoting the Hollywood Reporter: “It was also omnipresent beyond that, with an L.A. premiere later that same day, a premiere in Mexico on Nov. 11 and a ton of press featuring its stars, lead actress Cynthia Erivo and supporting actress Ariana Grande. The consensus reaction, with which I agree, is that the film is very good.”

  14. C-No says:

Both of these women are miscast. They are beautiful and I don’t want to limit the parts women can play, but the movie takes place when the characters are school-age (don’t remember if high school or college-ish). CE is 37. She looks great! She doesn’t look like a teenager! AG is 31! She looks … well, not great, but I don’t want to get into that. She doesn’t look like a teenager though. Thank you for reading my rant.

    • delphi says:

Kristin Chenoweth (OG Glinda) was 35 and Idina Menzel (OG Elphaba) was 32 when they both premiered their roles on Broadway in ’03. So, I don’t think this casting is that far off-base. And besides, we all know how much harder it gets for women in Hollywood to get leading roles once they hit 30.

There’s also a certain vocal maturity that both roles require that a younger performer might not be able to provide. And it’s also a time for suspension of disbelief (basically the whole point of theatre, lol). Just my opinion as a former theatre professional.

      • KASalvy says:

Just because they were (also) miscast on Broadway doesn’t mean that it couldn’t be rectified in the movie. And I say that as someone who loved the OG production. But I *never* bought Kristin and Idina as actual college students. It’s the Ben Platt/Evan Hansen conversation again…

I agree it would have been phenomenal to see two actresses who look like they’re actually teenagers/young adults take on the roles.

      • Lucy2 says:

The Ben Platt stuff bothered me in the movie because he was so obviously older and looked so much older, it was weird. For some reason in stage productions, older actors playing teenagers never really bothers me, including in Wicked.

  15. J says:

Both women are incredible vocalists. I don’t know why they’ve put so much auto tune and processing all over their voices, it sounds awful and is completely unnecessary. This is a real trend I’ve noticed in the past few years. Studio recordings sound too electronic for me nowadays. Hate it.

    • Nic919 says:

That clip of Popular sounds like she’s really copying a lot of how Chenowith performs the song. And because Chenowith wasn’t autotuned, the real aspect to her voice comes off much better.

Honestly if they were going to cast women in their thirties they could have just used Indina Menzel and Kristen Chenowith and just age them down with computers in the first half.

      • Lucy2 says:

I actually would have loved the movie with Kristin and Idina, but they’re both in their 50s at this point. It’s a shame the movie wasn’t made right after their original Broadway run.

  16. londongal says:

As a recovered anorexic, the weight loss of both these women is deeply troubling, They look very unwell. That is not ‘bodyshaming’, it’s common sense. I am fearful for them both and I hope they’re both receiving care.
