Prince William’s now-infamous “small-r royalty” interview was published two weekends ago. The royal reporters are still talking about it and talking around how much they hated everything William said in the piece. Tina Brown called him a performative pinhead and I got the feeling that most reporters rolled their eyes at this bald dolt saying sh-t like “and I’m also going to throw empathy in there as well, because I really care about what I do.” What few people can bear to admit is that William was trying and failing to copy his brother. Prince Harry leads with empathy, Prince Harry lives his life as a small-r royal, Prince Harry mixes his charitable work with advocacy and business. Basically, as always, William wants everything Harry has and everything Harry is. That’s basically what royal reporter Katie Nicholl had to admit in her interview with the Sun’s Matt Wilkinson.
Prince William is taking a “leaf out of Harry’s book” by trying to modernise the Royal Family at “pace”, an expert says. Vanity Fair royal editor Katie Nicholl spoke on The Sun’s Royal Show about the future King’s attempts to introduce changes to the Firm already.
In one of his most open and candid interviews earlier this month, the Prince of Wales, 42, claimed there was a shortage of “empathetic leaders” around the world. He said he wanted to continue helping people while carrying out his duties “differently for my generation”. He also emphasised how he’s looking at the Firm “with maybe a smaller ‘r’ in the royal”.
Speaking to Sun royal editor Matt Wilkinson, Ms Nicholl said: “One person who’s probably sitting there thinking ‘this is what I’ve been saying all along’ is the Duke of Sussex. Let’s be more open, let’s show more empathy, let’s do things a little bit differently. One of the reasons Harry felt he needed to leave was because he didn’t feel he could bend the institution the way he wanted to do things. I think we have seen the royals take a leaf out of his book.”
However, she said she doesn’t think it will “ever going to become too California… They’re not going to allow that to happen, that’s not them. It’s one thing opening up, it’s one thing seeing the King give a big hug to someone rather than just shake their hand…”
Ms Nicholl referred to King Charles admitting recently that he was “reduced to tears” after watching Queen Camilla’s domestic abuse documentary as an example of something unlikely to have been revealed under the previous reign. “That’s fine, that’s relatability, connectability and empathy, but the backbone of what they do isn’t going to change. That service to others, lifelong commitment to duty, that backbone that props the whole institution up – that’s not going to change.”
Ms Nicholl went on to say: “I think it’s modernising at some pace, but I think it’s only now had the opportunity to do that because the late Queen’s reign was so lengthy, it didn’t have the opportunity to modernise the way it is now….It can’t jump too quickly ahead of the curve, it has to keep up…. [but] it had to change, that’s the point.”
The Sun’s Mr Wilkinson said “it’s just interesting to see” William modernising “within” the Firm, while Harry “has thrown his toys out the pram and is trying to modernise his role outside the Royal Family…I think I know which one will be more successful – I’m really looking forward to seeing how it develops over the next couple of years.”
[From The Sun]
“I think I know which one will be more successful” – I know which brother is already massively successful, which is why everyone in that f–king family is copying him (and Meghan). Nicholl is like, yes, William is copy-keening Harry but hey, William is still going to be the same old dull left-behind Windsor, like all of the rest of them. And Tina Brown attacked William’s interview because (she said) William was forgetting everything his father has done for fifty-plus years. So what exactly is William actually modernizing? Show it to me, be specific.

If Harry wasn’t busy being successful, William wouldn’t copy him. So, yes, I know which one will be successful. The same one who is successful right now. And it isn’t the one they’re trying to believe is successful.
They all know that Harry is the winner here, but after reading the article I just felt that Katie Nicholl did not make her point. Why is she so afraid to say what she really wants to say 🙄
Maybe she doesn’t want to be pegged as a traitor and she wants to keep her job.
Access? I don’t know that I think Nichols has any real sources at this point. Bc she’s reported so many inanely wrong things. But she used to and if she does still have some, she won’t want to lose them. Bc it’s not like she’s ever going to have sources within the sussex camp.
The fact that she was interviewed at all just cracks me up. Has it come to this? Rota rats just sit around & interview each other, re-writing & re-working all the same stale tropes?
Feels like the wind had turned… william the next king being a royal with a small r is a try at making the peasants understand that he is a humble dude and is just as “normal” as his subjects. All I hear is I want to be lazy and do nothing. William is like his wife. They both have nothing extraordinary. Just small r’s as in small regularz. Nothing burgers unfortunately placed in position to shine. Them focusing on Harry and Meg are one more proof of how petty and small r’s they are instead of thinking big and bring true real Royals with service in their hearts
Empathy begins at home. William treated Harry and Meghan badly. Deploying Knauf to “get something” on Meghan . Also trying to break up Harry and Meghan. William is a phony and that’s not modernizing.
A hug looses its sincerity when you have to announce that you will be hugging people now.. that’s just icky.
Yeah. Empathy is something you just do, not speak of.
Yes, a spontaneous hug always seem more genuine and heartfelt, and we know that spontaneity is not in William’s wheelhouse. He’s a shallow, calculating and most of all, lazy so he comes across as fake, desperate and self-serving most of the time. He’s the opposite of Harry who wears his heart on his sleeve and genuinely loves helping and connecting with people.
No Peg is copying Harry but without any rizz or shine. He is failing miserably to copy his, so above him, brother. Yep I’m being mean on this one because Peg deserve to be mocked and sh*t upon.
lol your headline has me laughing 🤣… yes he is copying we all see it but while Prince Harry looks natural and as sunny as a summer day in California, Peggy’s attempts look unnatural to him and he comes across as insincere, dull and dreary (a lot like the weather there).. hmm maybe it does reflect him after all🤔. He just looks off no matter what he does now a days.
I agree. Will’s smile always looks so forced, and when he isn’t grinning like a fool he looks so put upon. It really loses something in translation between him and good Prince Harry. Wherein Harry is a natural Will is stilted and strained.
My favorite of Will’s looks is the one where it looks like he just smelled a giant fart.
Yes, I let out an unseemly laughter at that. There’s no danger of William becoming “too California.”
Absolutely not that stick is permanently wedged up his 🍑🫣… he will never be anything California.
Why won’t they make him shave? He looks terrible!
It is awful looking. And now his chin is more pointy and sharper (too sharp) with the beard, which does not make him look good.
I hate how the royal reporters, experts, historians and whatever, never land on the point.
They’re too sycophantic for my taste.
Why couldn’t Nicholl just ask how William hopes to lead with compassion or empathy, when he comes from a family where backstabbing is the norm? When he himself is a violent racist and backstabber? Smh
Matt Wilkinson is deeply obsessed with Harry. Hes the dude (Sun reporter) who showed up at the Dutch Invictus game and sat just a few seats from Harry, snapping photos of him and Meghan.
Moving right along, Will is a flop and entire existence is his flop era. The Brit Media, for obvious reasons, early on criticised Harry/Meghan for things like holding hands, and laud Will/Kate when they do the same. remember when Will/Kate tried to recreate the “rain under the umbrella” iconic photo of Harry/Meghan? Harry will always win this battle of meaning and popularity, and in this, William is the true SPARE!
Not as long as there’s a stationary motorcycle in front of a fake Arizona background with William going “vroom, vroom” on it. He’s catching up quickly, methinks. Yay, verily.
LOL! Your comment took me right out!!!
Yeah, I’ll never get over his creepy stalking at IG. The way he kept creeping closer and staring at Meghan.
Yes is was alarming and Harry’s friend (the tall british guy) noticed and stood up right in front of him.
So much snarling. William looks like he’s about to snap. He doesn’t seem able to control his expressions any more. I really do wonder what’s going on with him.
He used to be able to do the speech making and glad handing parts of the job even if he didn’t like it. I remember him coming to New Zealand and speaking in Christchurch after the mosque attack and doing a pretty decent job of being empathetic and thoughtful when he met with survivors and victims’ families. I’m not sure he’d manage that now.
Maybe the closer he gets to the main job the more he realizes he doesn’t want to do it. Back then he had the buffers of his grandmother, father, brother and his wife, and various uncles and aunts. I don’t know what’s going on with his wife, but once his father is gone Camilla isn’t going to, or be allowed to do anything, Harry is gone, Anne will probably retire, and Andrew is a disgrace. I guess he has Edward and Sophie but they are boring and he can’t hide behind them. They try to entice him like a cat with a treat, to do the splashy events that he thinks compete with Harry but he is to incurious to keep it up for long and he doesn’t want to do the grunt work so he’s just full on sour disposition all the time now.
You’re right. There really isn’t going to be anyone but him.
He must really be feeling the weight and isolation of that. Especially if his marriage is kaput too.
@Dee(2)
Theyre all (i:e the royals, the courtiers & the sycophantic royalist press) hoping against hope that chucky will stick around until george (crossed fingers for lottie also) come of age so that they can extend the life of this never-ending circus.
Those poor kids. I really feel for them.
It’s kind of hilarious that William never considered that the “slimmed down monarchy” was really going to eff him. Even funnier that Charles’ reign looks like it will be brief, and William chased his own workhorse sibling (complete with workhorse wife!) to another continent.
Sophie and Edward are not going to be able to retire ever, if the looks of Bagshot Park are anything to go by. It’s freaking enormous, and must take a fortune to maintain.
Harry escaping really broke something in him.
I think it did. He clearly needed Harry around to feel stable. And he’s been left with no one to blame or hide behind and no one to do the work he doesn’t want to do.
To feel stable, William really liked having Harry around. He could put him in his place and remind himself of his superior heir status. That’s harder to do now. And he could hide his lack of work behind Harry.
He really should have been the first to reverse course and realize welcoming Meghan was the only way forward for him.
I am so glad he didn’t realize he was shooting off both of his feet when he bullied Meghan and Harry out of the U.K. It’s the best thing that could have happened for them, ultimately.
I wonder if Will benched Kate as part of his “small r” plan, telegraphing that they won’t be participating in this when he is King. It has been said he wants to do far less pomp and ceremonial.
The thing Will (and Harry) doesn’t understand is that monarchy isn’t really something that can be modernized because if you’re just a regular person without all the pomp, then what is what point? And actually, Harry has been proving that the last 4 years.
I do wonder if and how Harry’s view on monarchy has changed now that the Queen has passed and he’s been out working in the world for awhile now.
Yes, despite all the royal talk of service and duty, all the job really entails is parades and ceremonies and fancy clothes. If you take that away, they’re irrelevant.
The real charitable work can be done by anyone who has wealth and connections.
I am convinced it has. There is no way he hasn’t continued learning the effects of empire building and slavery, especially now that he lives in the U.S. and has bi-racial kids.
He understands too much to go back, I think. It’s why I don’t think he’s ever moving back to England, even if the rota’s fever dream about a divorce came true. Not only wouldn’t he leave Archie and Lili, he wouldn’t go back to a system that wants to oppress POC.
There seems to be this irrational hatred for California amongst the BM. They would never write about someone being “too Australian or South African” and it’s incredibly off-putting.
Unfortunately, anti-Americanism in general is rife in the U.K., and is one of the last acceptable ways to be xenophobic. California is HATED by British conservatives for its perceived liberalism, health obsession, and association with Hollywood celebrity (which they see as vulgar while still wanting its money and attention)
That’s amusing though when you consider that their king believes in homeopathy and seems somewhat health obsessed and Will, Charles and Cam seem to want to hang out with actors.
Not aimed at you, Afken, but the economy of California (a state) has been better than that of the entire UK’s for a few years now. They should know that.
As a born Californian, all I can say is: they hate us ’cause they ain’t us. I imagine there are more than a few Brits who see vids and pics of Harry surfing in the sun, or Meghan out for an outdoor brunch with friends, and they go NUTS.
OK, these comments answer my question about what the heck “too California” means. I admit the traffic and prices are extremely high in California, and there are just too many people living there. However, this hatred certainly is irrational, as is the dislike of many things American, especially since the U.S. saved their precious country in two separate World Wars!
And why are American actors vulgar while British actors get knighted and made Commanders of the Order of the British Empire? Are they somehow more moral than actors in the rest of the world? Cleaner? Kinder??? Donate more to charity?? Does not make sense. I can only assume this is all jealousy because of the sunshine and warmer weather in California, and the fact that Americans generally make more money than their British counterparts.
I am headed to the UK for a 5 week visit next June/July, and have been there several times, yet have always been treated considerately and politely. Is this just a facade, and they really hate me as an American? (I stay in smaller British hotels, travel alone, rent a small car, and do not act like the proverbial “ugly American.)
Too much sun. They hate that. Too many good vibes. They hate that, too.
I mean William is saying he will modernize, and copy-keening words like empathy and coming up with small r royalty. But it’s all talk. What is he doing to modernize? All I see is a man who is trying to do the least but still get all the money and perks. Small r means less events for the rota to report on so Matt Wilkinson of the Sun looking forward to it is epically self-destructive.
Well one way to show empathy would be to make sure his tenants housing is modernized and energy efficient so they don’t freeze to death. Funny that didn’t come up.
Matt Wilkinson is a known hater of H&M (especially Meghan) and a complete lackey for the Wales family. He and the Sun are their go to for exclusives like that farm shop debacle and the recent break in story. They go to him when they need pr redirection.
Even when the topic doesn’t involve H&M he throws a jib in about them. These people present themselves as very insecure about the royals they love so much.
Royal reporters yet again miss the point. Harry couldn’t have moved forward as he is now as a working royal. He was meeting resistance back then, including from his brother. The brother who now wants to be Harry, but with duchies and good press. Yep, having it all ways!
It’s pretty obvious that PW is trying to copy Harry. But he’s failing miserably at every step.
Someone really needs to show them that delightful ‘sympathy vs empathy’ cartoon that did the rounds a few years ago. I’d settle for them being able to show genuine sympathy for other people. Empathy is tricky and that’s fine. Just show an ounce of sympathy and humanity.
“I think I know which one will be more successful”
And it will be Harry because a) compassion, empathy and a strong work ethic come natural to him. b) none of the previously stated attributes come easily to William and he doesn’t actually want to do anything. That strong desire to do nothing will always win out.
I agree. Also, having a like-thinking partner will help you achieve your goals. Harry and Meghan have similar values despite having different backgrounds. They are naturally outgoing, genuinely enjoy working together and are people persons. They are productive and goal-orientated. Meanwhile, Willnot and Kate are both spoiled, lazy, entitled and act like they should be shown reverence at all times. They talk big but don’t achieve anything of note yet expect accolades for just showing up and being “ROYAL”. That’s not enough to be as seen as successful in these times when the need is so acute. The difference between the two couples couldn’t be more stark!
Whatever the royal rota said will soon be forgotten. But last week Tina Brown called Prince William a “performative pinhead.” and that I think may stick
in people’s perception.
Lets deconstruct the term “performative pinhead”.
A pinhead is a stupid person. Tina Brown is calling William the heir to the British throne “a stupid person”. And William according to Tina, is not only stupid but is performative , meaning he is insincere, a fake , he is not really the person he wants to portray to the public . I am surprised there is no pushback from the Palace on Tina’s comments.
Maybe bc it was in a substack and not a uk paper? So they’re not as concerned about the reach of her criticism. And I’m sure Charles is fine with her assessment of William.
William needs to learn to SHOW and not TELL. Until he has completed some amazing, concrete, and highly visibly STEPS towards his plans.
Show me!
So many photos with Peg pulling his lips far back from his teeth. It’s downright off-putting! Is this his idea of a smile?
I rember seeing a video when William and Harry were small children and their mom Princess Diana was playing with them outside. William was playing on the swing set and she wanted him to come with her. She called him several times and he ignored her. So she said that’s ok I’ll have Harry to do it. William got off the swing set and started crying running after her to keep Harry from following her. This happened several times. Whenever she wanted William to do something and he ignored her she said that she would have Harry do it and right away he do what she wanted. This has been going on since they were children. In order to get him to do anything all they had to do was mention Harry. Nothing has changed.
I remember a video in which a six-year-old Willy (I think) shied away from a pet rabbit, so it was passed on to Harry, about four at the time. Harry pet and loved on the bunny right away, at which point Willy started screaming, “Can I hold him? Can I hold him?” Willy has wanted whatever Harry has since early childhood — sorry, since “arrly yaars.” There’s something for Kate to chew on.
And now that I think about it, I’m wondering if William looks at H&M and thinks, “Can I hold her? Can I hold her?”
Looking back and knowing what we know now, it was neither kind nor wise to use Harry as bait to get William in line. I think that it contributed to the William we see now and how William has always treated his younger brother, with that kind of dynamic set up as children how were they supposed to turn out any differently?
When you hear William say that he will throw empathy in there too, it makes me think of Harry. Harry never has to think about being approachable or emphatic, he just is. Could you imagine William trying to do that scene with Jelly Roll? He cannot relate to normal peasants at all. He is so awkward even with people he knows. He has no rizz.
You always find such awful photos of people you don’t like, but the second picture of Will is really one of the most handsome I’ve ever seen of him: except of him holding his hands de rigueur over his genitals, and then that rictus huge rabbit tooth grin, and that magnificent scrubby so-called beard, well, and the bald enormous forehead, and no self-confidence please think I’m great even though I haven’t done anything manner.
“Throw empathy in there.” LOL.
That reminds me of when Bush Senior was in a debate or maybe town hall with Bill Clinton during the ’92 campaign. He accidentally just read off of his note card “Message: I care!” It was one of those little moments that used to sink campaigns, before the Trump era in which a candidate (or him anyway) can apparently say anything and not be called out on it.
Everytime I think of willy , it’s not small r willy I want to type but another letter in the alphabet because he is definitely small something else . This man baby is so pathetic and the Royal rats that props him up are just as sad
Let me guess small d?
The man is gross, in personality, in looks, in attitude. Ugh. I’ve never seen such a desperate pathetic soul.
Harry is already successful and he would still be in that family if the press and the Palace had allowed him to do what William claims he wants to do now.
If he wants to modernize he could start with the heating systems in his rental properties.
And he could do that without even giving up one of his helicopter rides, homes, or other luxuries.
The leave behind royals … starting with the king and followed by the egg … are betraying a fundamental problem. They do not have a clue about what the institution’s mission is and therefore are simply rearranging the deck chairs on a sinking ship. Charles is spending his time finding new wzys to be spiteful to his relatives by playing Monopoly with houses and privileges and does not know what his own role is.
It is no surprise after a 60-plus-year “reign” by one sovereign, who saw the job as setting an example for the public with service and loyalty. She never actually carried out her most important role, standing up for an unwritten constitution. That is why she got rolled on Brexit by Boris. Charles could start by defining a true role for the sovereign. That is the cornerstone for the brand. Then what style he and his successor and flunkies adopt is the next logical step.
Unfortunately none of them are up to the job. Harry knows that, which really why he and Meghan are doing their best to lead as much as they can by example.
Another role she neglected to fulfill was raising her children to behave ethically and with that “empathy” that they all seem to lack. Ditto for ethics. She and Phillip also pushed Charles into a marriage he did not want that turned out horribly. None of this set good examples for her children, unfortunately, and other than Harry, we are seeing the results.
Diana tried, but she did not live long enough.
What is wrong with his face? Every time I see him smile it is just so fake! It’s just a slash with teeth! Only thing missing is his pointy finger.
I love Wallace & Gromit (new film in 2025), but Willy looks more and more like Wallace every day.
Are the RR going to call It modernization if Will and Kate hibernate in luxury in various castles when they come to the throne and only appear say monthly?
