I read her autobiography months ago.
I will totally go to see the movie.
I am all for the Pam renaissance!

Ooh, I’ll need to put that on my list! In the Bay Watch days, I felt about Pam somewhat how people now feel about Kim K, in terms of presenting an image of complete vapidness. I don’t think it’s anti-feminist to call out what I considered regressive cultural trends. But I’m am fascinated to see how she’s reinvented herself, and there’s plenty be learned from someone who was sucked into a highly toxic culture emerging reborn from it. (I don’t have hopes for Kim K, but who knows?)

      • Liz Purr says:

Pam’s sex tape was actually stolen. At least Pam had the good sense to kinda go away even though her personal life was still kinda messy, “marrying” a dude then divorcing him a week later, hanging out with Assange, and getting with a married man. Kum is never going away🙄

      • mightymolly says:

After I posted this, I remembered about the sex tape and realized my comparison to Kim K sounded callous. I was a busy college student and never heard about the sex tape. That wasn’t my association with Pam.

People forget that breast augmentation was not standard in Hollywood before Bay Watch. Pamela put forth an image that I found completely toxic and regressive, but I had no understanding of her lack of power, either. I assumed she was the driving force behind this new pressure on women to surgically alter themselves. That’s what I mean in comparing her to Kim K. The sex tape was a massive violation, and I didn’t mean to bring that up.

      • Eleonor says:

I’ll let you read the book.
For me it was interesting because for the first time she was able to tell her story. And for the record she made it clear that she has never gained anything from all that sextape mess.

IDK. I went on a magical trip to Vancouver Island. My husband and I decided to watch Pamela’s HGTV series about remodeling/updating her family’s VI property. She was cringeworthy. After four episodes I could not watch anymore, I was so embarrassed for her. It was bad. She just seems like someone that is talking the talk, not walking the walk.

      • Liz Purr says:

I’ve been watching Baywatch and there’s plenty of women in the background with fake breasts when Pam was on. Plenty of actresses had breast jive but they were at least subtle. Maybe it was in the mid to late nineties they started getting ridiculous much like Pam’s did.

I think KimK profits from her sexualized image must more than Pamela Anderson. Pamela Anderson was exploited by those who pretended to be looking after her best interests. I’m happy she is living life on her terms these days.

@Eleanor – My library had the audio copy ready available, so I started listening last night. It’s interesting hearing it in her voice. In some ways, she romanticizes her childhood in the normal way of girls of my generation: free thinker, tom boy. (I put aside my sense that this is how Maga women refer to themselves, because she was a child in rural Canada). But the horror of being a sexualized child launches really fast in chapter 2, which is as far as I’ve gotten. Sadly, that horror is also not an unusual experience for a young girl.

Looks interesting. I notice Jamie Lee Curtis is in there, too.

  3. Lucy2 says:

This looks good! Good for Pam sort of reinventing herself here.

  4. Truthiness says:

Pajiba/Mike Redmond saying that Joe Rogan looks like a potato wearing headphones is really going to stick with me.

  5. SuzyQ says:

I saw “A Real Pain” at Sundance this year and it was SO great. Kiernan Culkin is outstanding. It’s a great movie.

  6. Lucy says:

I am fascinated that Jana is now Mennonite. I’ve only known some Mennonites peripherally, they were from NE and did the Amish style of dress. I’m glad she’s away from her parents and family finally, I hope she went into a better place.

    • mightymolly says:

I once read a memoir written by a former Mennonite, and I’ve read a few non fiction studies of the Amish. I’m by no means an expert, but it seems there’s a difference between an agrarian society with distinct gender roles that support different elements of farm work and right wing religious sects that see the oppression of women as necessary to male dominance.

  7. BW says:

    Pam looks sooooo good.

  8. Lydmi says:

Wow she seems wonderful, powerful and raw in this film. Want to see it.

I figure Sally Draper is about six months younger than me, so her development (and wondering about her future) has been a strong part of why I loved Mad Men so much.

Here’s my pitch: Sally would go to Swarthmore College and dabble in the punk/post-punk scene. She’d become a good writer. She’d travel to London in the late 70s and move into a squat. She’d cover the music scene for “The New Music Express” and “Sounds.”

She’d travel a lot and never move to NYC. She’d eventually become a travel writer for “The Observer,” “Granta,” and “The Lonely Planet” travel-guides. In her late 30s, she’d marry a Spanish political writer who’d spent his mid-20s in prison under Franco. They’d be based out of Madrid. No kids.

Bobby and Gene would visit and bring their families. Don would still be Don and come to Madrid just once for the wedding. He’d call every few months. … to be continued.

  10. Tanisha says:

Meagan’s friends have warned her. She’s ignoring the warnings. Hell the entire black community warned her. Whatever happens from here is on her. Pamela’s comeback seems to be in the cards

  11. NotSoSocialB says:

Is that PA’s real voice, or affected for the role? I can’t with the baby voice.
