Sharon Stone: America is in ‘our naive, ignorant, arrogant adolescence’

Sharon Stone was invited to the Torino Film Festival this week. They gave her a Stella della Mole lifetime achievement award (just like Angelina Jolie). Sharon goes to these kinds of film festivals and international film events all the time – she shows up to the opening of an envelope, especially if that envelope is in Europe. As part of her award, Sharon did a press conference at the festival, and she was asked specifically about the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. I repeat: she was not asked directly about Donald Trump, she was asked specifically about violence against women. It just so happens that Trump is an adjudicated rapist and that a half-dozen of his cabinet-level nominees are predators, rapists, degenerates and whatever Matt Gaetz is. As you can imagine, Sharon’s thoughts on the issue of “violence against women” are influenced by the realities of the incoming Trump administration.

“This question about the question of violence against women is– is a big one. And I think we have to really stop and think about things. And we have to stop and think about who we choose for government. And if, in fact, we are actually choosing our government or if the government is choosing itself.

You know, Italy has seen fascism. Italy has seen these things. You guys. And you understand what happens. You have seen this before. My country is in the midst of adolescence. Adolescence is very arrogant. Adolescence thinks it knows everything. Adolescence is naive and ignorant and arrogant. And we are in our ignorant, arrogant adolescence.

We haven’t seen this before in our country. So Americans who don’t travel, who 80% don’t have a passport, who are uneducated, are in their extraordinary naivete. What I would say is that the only way that we can help with these issues is to help each other.

Now, we can’t just say women should help women because that’s the only way we have survived so far. We must say that good men must help good men and those good men must be very aware that a lot of their friends are not good men. And we can’t continue to pretend that your friends are good men when they’re not good men. And you must be very clear minded and understand that your friends who are not not good men are dangerous violent men. And you have to keep them away from your daughters, your wives and your girlfriends, because this is the time when we can no longer look away, when bad men are bad.

I was watching a comedian the other night and he said, I asked a woman to dinner and she said yes. And it was such a brave thing for her to do because the only real thing, the number one killer of. In the world today is men. For men, the number one killer is heart disease. The number one killer for women is men! It is very important to remember that. It’s very important to remember that. Thank you.

On a scale of zero to Dixie Chicks, this is pretty middle-of-the-road to me? She doesn’t even say Trump’s name, but yeah, she makes not-so-oblique references to the arrogance and ignorance of millions of Americans who voted for Trump. MAGAts are crying because they think Sharon called them dumb, uneducated losers who never travel. But… she’s right? One of the big postmortems on the election was the dumbest people in America voted for Trump and they all cited some of the dumbest reasons why they voted that way.

The whole section about “good men have to look out for women”… men had their chance to look out for women and they voted for Trump in large numbers. The majority of white women also chose this violent fascism. So it is what it is. What’s also interesting is that in 2022, Stone made some interesting comments post-Dobbs, in which she basically said that Trump, Dobbs, and the sort of new cultural acceptance of violent misogyny was all a backlash to Me Too. I don’t believe that, but I think her 2022 comments were more interesting than whatever this was.

That’s hopeful of Sharon to say we are in our adolescence as a nation. I view this as America’s death rattle.

    • mightymolly says:

IKR? Adolescence? No, America is in it’s crotchety elderly years clinging desperately to a world that has evolved beyond its ability to comprehend. American is scared, angry, and dying.

“good men have to look out for women”

Not enough white people are getting in each other’s faces about their entitlement, racism and misogyny. Stop all this coddling and trying to understand why they vote the way they vote and embrace a rapist, thief who spearheaded an insurrection. Enough is enough.

    • Janet says:

Many of us white people have been ignorant of our privilege. I always knew racism was real but I didn’t recognize my privilege until i was in my 30s.

I am always working towards being a better aly.

      Peace

She’s not wrong about the dumb, uneducated, untraveled part. Trump voters are willfully ignorant.

    • mightymolly says:

They are, but we can’t let them claim they didn’t know who he was, what they voted for. When the FAFO starts rolling in hard and fast, when 25% tariffs spike prices on gas and groceries, remind them repeatedly that he told them about the tariffs and they voted for it. When their loved ones can’t get proper healthcare for their pregnancy complications, remind them that they voted for this. When their gardener gets deported, remind them that they voted for this, and they did know because he told them.

We’ve tried “Good men have to look out for women” for centuries. It doesn’t work. Women have to look out for themselves and each other.

Buffy did a whole episode lampooning this very concept. When she morphs into her Halloween costume and starts asking when the men will come and save them. Nah, men can absolutely be allies and loved ones, but they aren’t are protectors and saviors.

This was a hugely disappointing election. I have no idea why or how this happened. My stepmom is white. She is a huge Kamala supporter. I know latinos that voted for Trump. 🤷‍♀️ It makes no sense. I hope the Democrats can gain control of the House and Senate again in two years. Let’s hope they regroup and get a message that resonates with the American voters.

      • Mightymolly says:

What message will resonate with the voters other than outright lies? I’m tired of hearing that the Dems ignored the working class. The pubnicans devastated the working class with trickle down and bragged about it. We’re not dealing with a populace who makes informed decisions. So fine. Let’s get another Bernie in the bull pen and write rhetoric about cancelling debt and putting workers in charge. You know, the very things the masses have already resoundingly voted against. Maybe it’ll work. But it can’t be AOC. It absolutely has to be a white man. Because these fools only worship a blue eyed deity.

It was a backlash, read Susan Faludi.

    • Nic919 says:

I think the backlash was from having Obama as president. Many could not handle a biracial man being president. That’s how orange idiot got media attention with his racist birther bs. He was not shut down and was able to gather support. Had there not been so much resentment about Obama then orange idiot being racist would never have gained traction.

      • Big Swifty says:

Plus people resented 2008 bailouts. Unfortunately the response was to swing to the populous right Trump, instead of the populous left Bernie.

I’m a Hispanic woman. Trump presidency scares me.

I’ve spoken to a few Trump supporters. They say the issues for them were the economy and immigration.

I really hope the Democrats can win the House and Senate next time. I hope they deliver a strong message on how they plan to deal with these issues.

    • Mightymolly says:

Right. The economy, which is strong and experiencing historically low unemployment. They believe the economy is struggling because of inflation and post-pandemic price gouging. These people have a childlike understanding of the world, where only their immediate desires matter. Constant analysis and blaming is futile. We’re not dealing with complex thinkers who make informed decisions.

  8. Traveller says:

I will never forgive the voters who put his regime in office. They are more than dumb, they are dangerous and evil. We have all been pulled down and made incredibly vulnerable by their need to destroy the country.

I’m really scared by this administration.

I would like to know what needs to be done for the next election cycle. What issues and concerns we need to address. More than half the country voted for him. I don’t think half of the country is racist, at least I hope not.

I think the work needs to start now so we are ready when election time comes.

    • Mightymolly says:

Our institutions are racist. The electoral college is racist. The continued cultural assumption that white and male is the default is racist. Half the country might not wear white sheets, but they aren’t interested in doing the work to dismantle our default status, which is racist by design. So the answer is to find a charismatic cishet white man to tell the masses what they want to hear. And I’ll vote for whoever that is, but I no longer care about the actual welfare of the uninformed masses After nearly half a century of activism, that’s where I am now.

      • Anonymous says:

You are 100% correct. I feel so defeated and scared. I was hopeful when Obama won that change was possible. He was elected twice. Hillary won the popular vote but was fuc$ed over by the electoral college. It’s all been downhill since.

I love my country. I want to see us thrive as a nation. I guess I’m still grieving. I don’t want to imagine what the next four years are going to be like.

It still doesn’t make sense to me that many of the swing states voted blue down the ballot except POTUS. Sometimes I wonder, why the Dems don’t have the spine to do a manual recount. Also I still think the Dems panicked with Biden. That’s the strategy that Republicans wanted to have this type of reverse psychology- they know he’s the only one that can beat Trump and Biden dropping out was a gift. SM 100% played a role in this election in how data was communicated to voters. And it seems most of tech this time(and imo as mentioned before, outside influences) were behind Trump. The Dems wasn’t able to effectively advertise that the U.S. has the best economy in the world post pandemic compared to other countries- That all countries are suffering inflation because the world shutdown due to the pandemic but it’s the the U.S. that came out better than the rest. They just couldn’t or wasn’t able to communicate this well. While the Republicans were able to effectively present high egg prices(which isn’t entirely true)- and that pretty much imo won it for Trump.
Although The MAGAs are all so gullible as ex-Dems have now controlled and took over the Republican Party 🙄

I’ve been wondering about this election too. I still can’t understand how some DEMS voted for Trump. Most say that the economy and immigration were the reason they voted for him. A few say they decided not to vote because of the war in Gaza.

I know people are suffering economically. A lot of people are struggling to pay basic bills, yet the policies enacted by Biden had us in a better situation than most countries. I wonder if more messaging was needed.

I’m Latina. The immigration issue scares me. Some people I talk to think Trump is very extreme in his views, but say Biden and Kamala let the situation get totally out of control. They say that since immigrants were sent in buses to other states more people felt the situation. They were upset immigrants were getting vouchers while local homeless were suffering. I’m really conflicted about this. The idea of people getting round up and kicked out scares me. It feels inhumane.

I know some feel it might be racism and sexism but some of these people voted for Hillary and Obama.

I really hope we can gain control of the House and Senate soon.
