A German documentary about ‘lost’ Prince Harry seems like it’s just tabloid BS?

There’s a German “journalist” named Ulrike Grunewald who seems to think that she’s the Ronan Farrow of the royal beat. Instead of using her time and resources to investigate the slumlord Windsors and their hidden fortune, Grunewald has apparently spent years “investigating” the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Just doing two minutes of research on Grunewald online, it seems like a lot of very sad and hateful people pinned a lot of their hopes on her, and they wanted her to “expose” Harry and Meghan for [insert deranged conspiracy here]. Instead, after all of this time, money and effort, Grunewald has made a 45-minute documentary called Harry: The Lost Prince. The documentary reveals that Grunewald gets all of her talking points from the Daily Mail, and wouldn’t you know, the Mail did an exclusive interview with her to promote her documentary. This is a closed loop – the Mail says something vile about the Sussexes, Grunewald repeats it in a faux-investigative documentary, and the Mail squeezes another story about their own vile lie. From the Mail:

A major documentary titled Harry: The Lost Prince is to air on television in Germany on Tuesday. The 45-minute film has been more than a year in the making and is an examination of, among other things, whether Harry and Meghan have succeeded in ‘finding freedom’ and launching themselves as a financially independent, globally influential entity. The answer to this last question, according to documentary-maker Ulrike Grunewald, one of Germany’s most experienced royal reporters, is a firm ‘No.’

As Ms Grunewald, presenter of the long-running German news and current affairs show, Heute-Journal (Today-Journal), and a royal correspondent since 1987 when she accompanied the then Prince Charles and Princess Diana on their visit to Germany, told the Mail exclusively: ‘Harry and Meghan have set the bar very high. They want to be global benefactors who bring about tangible change. So far, they have not lived up to this image at all.’

Ms Grunewald travelled to Montecito to try to interview the couple and their friends and discovered that despite their wealth and royal pedigree, the Sussexes do not appear to have been fully integrated into the community’s most elite circles. She said: ‘On average, the millionaires and billionaires who move here pay eight to nine million euros for a house. The cultural life is very lively, but everything often takes place in closed circles and Harry and Meghan rarely take part in these activities. They seem to have isolated themselves a lot.’

The Sussexes’ neighbour, Richard Mineards, tells Ms Grunewald that the couple don’t seem to have put down particularly deep roots in the area, being seldom seen in town – just occasional trips to the local market or walks, always with security in tow: ‘Sometimes you will see her at the farmers’ market or with a dog but generally you don’t see her and you just don’t see much of him. It’s a shame. This is a lovely place.’

Ms Grunewald was further intrigued by their Archewell Foundation, which was launched to great fanfare in 2020 as their major philanthropic venture. ‘What surprised me most was how ineffectively Harry and Meghan’s Archewell Foundation is organised,’ she told the Mail. ‘The amount of donations has fallen drastically in one year: from 13million dollars in 2021 to two million dollars declared in 2022/23. According to their own documents, Harry and Meghan only work one hour a week for the Archewell Foundation – why so little?’

Ms Grunewald said: ‘During the year that we worked on this film, a change of strategy was recognisable in Harry and Meghan. They started out as a power duo in their new life in California. Now they mainly appear separately, as they were unable to create a functioning image together. They have come down to earth. I was interested in whether Harry and Meghan’s strategies for an independent life are working. After four years, the results are very mixed.’

[From The Daily Mail]

Just to be clear, a German tabloid-TV journalist barged into the quiet and ritzy enclave of Montecito and demanded to speak to the Sussexes and anyone who knows Meghan and Harry. Montecito residents would have treated her the same way they treat the British tabloid journalists who try to stalk the Sussexes in California as well. Few people spoke to her and of course no one is going to open up their private foundation or accounts to her, so all she has to go on are the increasingly hysterical and intrusive British tabloid reports, which she uses in place of actual investigation. Something else is clear from this Mail exclusive – they’re all going to start ramping up the criticism of Invictus, and try to target Harry through the Invictus Games in Canada and in Birmingham (in 2027).

  1. Herrgreter says:

German here. Unfortunately ALL the German media (not only tabloids, also zdf, ard etc) are simply picking up the bonkers narrative from the British tabloid media. There are some so called royal experts but they’re strictly following what the windsors are saying. There is no huge interest in the real BRF though anywhere outside of gossip magazines.

    • Nanea says:

Another German here, just adding some context.

The channels ARD and ZDF (Grunewald’s employer) are public broadcasters, akin to the BBC, and their funding is mainly based on something that could be described as paid for by taxpayers.

So everyone is paying for this trash, and I don’t know anyone who will be watching tonight. They really ahould be ashamed of basing “research” on the Heil and that Mineards guy, who’s not only not a neighbor, just someone living in Montecito, but a stalker and someone who likes to twist the truth for a handful of coins.

And of course Ms Grunewald already is the patron saint of the Derangedeers, despite this sorry effort not having aired yet.

      • Noor says:

Shame on the public broadcaster for wasting German taxpayers money on this documentary.

      • Blubb says:

Third German here. This documentary is directly followed by one about Kate, titel: the star of the Windsors… Yeah, I am angry that my money finances this garbage.

      • Sunnyside up says:

Kate the star, surely that’s a joke. Mind you the BBC is getting to be more of a tabloid as well.

      • EmpressCakey says:

This is CRAZY!!! Mineard isn’t a “neighbor”. He’s a reporter who covers the royal family. The Montecito Journal has him listed this way:
“Richard covered the Royal Family for Britain’s Daily Mirror and Daily Mail, and was an editor on New York Magazine. He was also a national anchor on CBS, a commentator on ABC Network News, gossip on The Joan Rivers Show and Geraldo Rivera, host on E! TV, a correspondent on the syndicated show Extra, a commentator on the KTLA Morning News and Entertainment Tonight.”

    • Hypocrisy says:

Time for others to stop trying to retell Prince Harry’s story, he gave us Spare and the docuseries.. anything produced not using the facts from those is tabloid and palace propaganda and pure lies.

    • Random42 says:

Makes sense. After the survey held only 8% of the German people want the monarchy installed as the head-of-state. France is probably even lower than that.

  2. Dee(2) says:

She said: ‘On average, the millionaires and billionaires who move here pay eight to nine million euros for a house.’
So knowing this she just showed up asking questions and is surprised no one spoke to her? If she just showed up to some stately house in England to ask a bunch of questions about Charles, Camilla, or William does she think that they would just open the door and welcome her in? And this Richard Mineards guy seems to be the BMs go to for ” on the ground” reporting in Montecito so is he legitimately surprised that maybe he doesn’t get invited to any of the parties that Harry and Meghan go to in the community? It never crossed his mind that maybe other people don’t want someone who’s so willing to run to the press to hang around them?

  3. Eurydice says:

Lol, Ms. Grunewald wants us to believe her and not our own eyes. In what way are H&M not financially independent and globally influential?

  4. wolfmamma says:

How sad that these “ reporters” spend so much energy in such a negative way. What a way to live your life – to spend it writing out right lies and innuendos.
Tragic waste especially when the truth of Harry and Meghan is so uplifting and nurturing for so many.

  5. Mabs A'Mabbin says:

I’m so glad you do all the cross-research and pinning the red string on the board Celebitchy lol.

  6. Jais says:

Who in the world was going to talk to this person? Those closed circles are closed to journalists like her.

  7. somebody says:

So are they supposed to walk into town every day? Who does that, except for maybe retired people with no other interests or those with a job in town? Mineard apparently used to work for the Daily Mail, so just more tabloid BS coming out of his mouth. The only thing exposed in this documentary is how ignorant the maker is. And, PH is not lost.

    • Julia says:

How many of us with jobs and families have the time to immerse ourselves in our local community? We may know some of our neighbours but probably most of us don’t socialise with them regularly. Harry and Meghan’s friends are not going to talk to this person. This filmmaker is working from the assumption that being a working royal is a real job (it’s not). Harry and Meghan are finically independent and devote time to charity for free, anything else is nobody’s business.

      • Random42 says:

You got it. A working royal is not a job description. Actually, anybody outside of the monarch him-/herself does not have a constitutional roll. This includes married-in husbands and wives, heirs to the throne and their childern.

All this talk about Harry quitting his duties and therefore a traitor, is garbage. Even if some of the people “work” as a royal – they still don’t get an income (compared to the time the civil list exisited). They are at mercy of the monarch. The only one that is independent is the Prince of Wales who has Cornwall as income.

I get why Harry and Meghan left – especially Meghan working for a living. Suddenly being at the mercy of your father-in-law is a unexcetable situation.

  8. Maxine Branch says:

Harry and Meghan were purposeful when they selected this community to live. Those gutter rats are beside themselves because they have not been able to penetrate the walls of this community to spread their nonsense. You do not pay a premium to live in a community to see it infested with gutter rats. Pretty sure their inquiries are met with disdain.

  9. Teddy says:

So amusing she thinks she learned anything about Montecito, let alone Harry and Meghan.

  10. Over it says:

Jfc. When will this complete demented stalking end? Like I don’t get it . The Germans got rid of their monarchy and are happy about it so why must Meghan and Harry be held to standards that them themselves don’t want and the left behinds are not fulfilling. These people should just admit what we all know . They hate Meghan because white Harry loves every bit of his black wife .

    • Beverley says:

Yup. They’ll die mad because Harry married a Black American and he adores her. All those predictions about her being a “degree wife” ring hollow. Looks like this is a forever match.

  11. aquarius64 says:

These idiots who call themselves reporters trying to get dirt on the Sussexes from people they cannot bribe. The Monteceito crowd id not on the same wage scale as KP and BP staff and definitely not as broke as the Markles. They live there for and not for harassment from the tabloids; and they won’t snitch on their neighbors. The expense report from Germany to CA had to be high; so they slapped something together to justify the trip.

    • Blubb says:

Don’t worry all Germans paid for it, as they GEZ-Gebühren from every viewer. Yes I am German too and really angry that part of my money I am forced to pay, pays for this mud.

      • Anonymous says:

As a German I am surprised that the ZDF paid for it. I watched another documentary from Ms Grunewald yesterday, just to get a feel for her. This was about the future European Queens, not really bad, but nothing new.

After that I watched a docu about Kate which made me sick. So saccharine sweet, her “natural laugh”, how she loves to be involved with her charities “not for she has to, but for she wants to”. Really???? That thing was nothing but delusional, the worst a so called “body language expert” who is clearly in love with Kate. There is no other explanation for her gushing.

I will watch the drivel about Harry and Meghan tonight, then call a friend who works for the ZDF to find out who okayed it, and send them a lovely letter letting them know how I feel about wasting my taxpayers money.

ZDF is usually known for well made documentaries, I would love to see one about the unholy alliance between European monarchies, especially the British one, and the press.

  12. Nerd says:

Harry and Meghan left the UK five years ago so any “royal expert” or “royal reporter” who flies all the way to Montecito makes their claim that Harry and Meghan are irrelevant or unimportant into a flat out lie. It says something about the Daily Fail if the comments above are true that they have an ex DF employee now living in Montecito as their “neighbor” source about two people who left and moved to another country, and what it says is they are desperate. In her year long research she has no idea who they have or haven’t hung out with because we have all seen Harry and Meghan, still hanging out in Montecito at bookstore launches with other celebrities in Montecito, that the DF have sworn they are no longer friends with. We saw them going to a Tyler Perry birthday celebration with Oprah and others. We saw them participate individually and together with Kevin Costner and others within their community to support the first responders. This “expert” isn’t even an expert on basic behaviors that happen in neighborhoods because most people socialize with certain people within their community and they don’t advertise it to nosy and out of place trolls who move all the way from the UK hoping to get a gotcha moment. It’s been 5 years and they have never gotten their gotcha moment. We don’t even see Will or Kate out socializing every week with their neighbors or their community in any of their many houses, but Harry and Meghan keeping their family and friend group safe and close is a sign that Harry is lost? I guess we had it wrong this whole year thinking that Kate was missing, because apparently she was just lost.

    • Chelsea says:

Yeah it so crazy to say no one has seen them in Montecito or they are not embraced there when they’ve been distinguished guests at Kevin Costner,s charity concert 2 years running and the new bookstore run by by their close friend entrepreneur Victoria Jackson(who is also the wife of the billionaire founder of proactiv) has their books in a hometown heroes section at a book opening that was attended both by netflixs co ceo ted sarandos and paramount ceo brian robbins (who we know is a close friend of the Sussexes) like come on.

  13. JCallas says:

They have to keep attacking the Sussexes to distract from the very real controversies happing within the BRF.

  14. Maja says:

Absolute RR twaddle. None of the friends, confidants, associates, real neighbours in Montecito nor the Sussexes themselves get a word in. Journalism that pounces on RR’s daily hate campaign and the right wing media is not journalism. It almost exclusively gives voice to the people who daily spout baseless fantasies about the Sussexes. The ones who are suing Prince Harry. Not a single word about the truth that they have fled a racist misogynistic press since they were seen together. Not a word about the death threats and daily hatred in the right-wing media that nearly drove Meghan to suicide. Many Germans loves Harry and Meghan, it seems to be bothering some people here. To do this, they are creating a “documentary” with public money that doesn’t deserve to be called journalism.

  15. Maja says:

    @Anonym
I don’t know anyone at ZDF but I did the same as you. The Katedoku will be broadcast today just after Prince Harry and both reflect only the royal rota and the opinion of the right wing Murdoch press. That’s not serious journalism. And that with public money. I have also written an e-mail and hope that many more will write.

    • Blubb says:

I just did the same… A nice letter to the ZDF what they do with our money…

        Super ❣️
If people really want truth, should watch Prince Harry and Meghan’s documentary on Netflix or read “Spare” or these pages at byline times. Harry has three lawsuits against the right-wing only media – he’s fighting for truth in Media for all of us

        https://bylinetimes.com/?s=Prince+Harry

    • Anonymous says:

      I hope many will complain.

Watched it today and actually had a good laugh. They still want to sell the idea that Harry will go back to England “he spends more time here than in the last years!” Yes, numpty, for his lawsuits against your ilk. And to bury his uncle. And WellChild. He leaves after 24 hours. A sure sign he will bring his children to learn about their heritage. These people are so delusional it is laughable.

ZDF really paid for this? So disappointed.

  16. Jais says:

Harry landed in beautiful montecito with his beautiful family. He’s surrounded by a community that knows not to talk to tabloid writers. To be so lost🙄

  17. Advisor2U says:

In other words, that ”random Montecito guy” is not someone who can afford to be in H&M’s Montecito circle of friends, or in the circles surrounding their corporate associates. We’ve seen H&M getting involved in social and community events of the Montecito elite, like Cavin Costner’s start-studed annual First Responders concert, where, on a few occasions, they’ve given out awards to local heroes.

It’s clear that the guy is paid by The Fail (and other British outlets) to every so often say what they want him to say about H&M. He’ve said the same crap before.

PS: the woman has rounded up a bunch of Meghan haters from the British royal beat to appear in this doc, like Angela D, so the outcome is predictable. It’s a one-sided negative H&M portret, it seems. The length of the doc also tells you everything; after a whole year, she still hasn’t come up with a single scoop or revealed anything new. It’s a rehash of British tabloid and RF trash about H&M.

  18. Var says:

These journalists have found an easy way to get a free trip to Santa Barbara. There is no public interest reason for a German journalist to go looking into Harry or Meghan’s private lives. Neither are German. Neither are government officials or taxpayer funded. I’m sure the journalist got to enjoy the sun and ocean though🤷🏿‍♀️.

  19. Kittenmom says:

“Major” documentary huh? lol sure Jan.

  20. Sparky says:

I had to laugh when I read this. My dad lives in Montecito near the Sussexes. I can only imagine my dad’s response if a German documentation questioned him about the Royals. My dad doesn’t give a crap about anything Royal related but in general he’s quite respectful of his neighbors famous or otherwise. The part that gives me a chuckle is pondering what my dad would say. Typically, my dad would give a polite not interested.Buuuuuut… A film created by a German filmmaker and funded by the German government????? My dad is a Holocaust Survivor from Germany so the filmmaker might have received something more acerbic.

  21. Lau says:

Yeah we have the same delusional idiots in France too.

  22. L4Frimaire says:

What does this even mean? “Harry and Meghan have set the bar very high. They want to be global benefactors who bring about tangible change. So far, they have not lived up to this image at all.” Every time something like this comes out, they say something like the Sussexes aren’t changing the world enough. Whatever. Where is that coming from? I seem to recall part of the reason they were so viciously attacked in the UK was because there was a genuine unease, almost panic, that they were changing the monarchy, too woke, become the face of the royal family. Now the complaint is they’re not dominating the world quickly enough. Seriously! Instead of making blanket proclamations about ending homelessness or peace in the Middle East, the Sussexes are laser focused on the causes they care for, getting directly involved, are producing results and getting recognition. Maybe not world changing, but life changing for many. Harry isn’t lost, he’s just changed direction and moved on. These people need to stop stalking them and bothering their neighbors .

    • Julia says:

Exactly, Harry and Meghan never said they wanted to change the world. ‘Show up do good’ the Archewell motto explains exactly what they are trying to do. Invictus is so successful because instead of claiming that it can help solve the problems of every injured serviceman and woman in the world it takes about 500 competitors and gives them a goal to focus on and a competition to aim for which can be life changing for them and their families. It also creates a community for them.

  23. Random42 says:

Grunewald has a doctorate. Unfortunately, she didn’t put it to good use. From what I read, she got her information from so-called royal experts – whoever they are – and tabloids journalists. So there you have it.

Futhermore, it was mentioned that the Palace was worried about the revalations of the documentary – but on the other hand they were looking forward to it with shadensfreude. That’s probably what was leaked from the Palace.

But, it’s nothing new. No new talking points. Oh, and the Archwell Foundation isn’t thriving because the donations fell compared to the previous years.

The next thing up is that the Sussexes are running out of money. Income was listed (Spotify, Netflix, book sales). But nobody really knows what the Sussexes actually earned. Neither of them every spoke about their contracts.

Furthermore, they forgot Harry’s income regarding Travelist and BetterUp. Not to mention their investments. Also, any speaker’s fees aren’t mentioned either. Part of what the Sussexes do is under the radar.

So: same old, same old. But the tabloids can now create further outrage und run hundreds of articles und distract from the elephants in the room.

  24. Mego says:

It was so bad that even the kronenzeitung that is like the dailymail in Austria called them out for it.
