Luke Wilson was an unprofessional diva on set of AT&T commercials

25th Annual Santa Barbara International Film Festival - Day 11
Whenever my daughter sees those AT&T spots starring Luke Wilson, she remarks, “That man has an abnormally large head.” If the new reports are to be believed, she just might be right about that. Wilson doesn’t like being the spokesperson for AT&T wireless anymore, and he doesn’t care who knows it. What started out as a low-key gig that made the “Royal Tenenbaums” actor some extra money between projects is now a full time job that makes Wilson so cranky, he recently copped a major attitude while taping a new commercial.

Luke Wilson just wants to do movies, especially independent films, but he recently signed a deal with AT&T to make the funny commercials about the cell phone network’s reach that you have probably seen by this point.

But Fox411 has learned that the “Old School” star is miserable doing the project and has earned a reputation for being a diva on set.

“Luke was awful during the filmings – he would even talk back to the director,” said our source close to the TV spot. “He refused to say lines and wanted them re-written. There were some lines meant to direct the commercial in a certain way, but Luke downright refused to say the lines at all. Luke kept saying, ‘I would never say that and I will not say that!’ The staff and production teams were shocked.”

F0x411 has learned that Wilson is so picky he won’t share the camera with anyone, either.

“Luke will not shoot scenes with other actors,” said our snitch. “Any scenes that include Luke and someone else were shot with the actors separately. He would not do scenes with anyone, so doubles are used and the scenes are edited together to make the commercials work.”

“Everyone misses the old days when they didn’t have a ‘name’ doing the commercials,” our source said. “Luke has made the filming process so unpleasant that people dread working with him. Luke is annoyed that he has to do commercials to make money as an actor and he makes the experience miserable, because he’s miserable. It’s unprofessional and unpleasant.”

Wilson’s reps did not return emails requesting comment.

Wilson can be seen happily (we hope) working in his new film, “Death at a Funeral,” in theaters April 16th.

[From Fox News]

This reminds me of similar stories about actress Catherine Zeta Jones when she was the T-Mobile spokesperson. Rumors about Catherine’s on-set demands fueled speculation for why they dropped her from ads, but recently, she’s been featured in a new set of ads, so maybe they were willing to put up with her. The Luke Wilson ads seem pretty popular as well, so I don’t think he’s going anywhere. Cheer up, Luke! At least starring in these commercials will keep you from doing another crappy movie with Jessica Simpson– we hope.

What an ass. I remember watching the first one and thinking how fat he’d gotten, but figured he’d be thanking AT&T for giving him a job. Then the commercials got funny and since he was hardly doing anything else, continued to think he damn well should be grateful he was getting known for the commercials.

Poop on him. Hard to believe a B-/C+ movie actor thinks he should be a diva on the set of a silly communications company commercial.

  2. El Predicto says:

He’s rumored to be a raging alcoholic ( hence the weight gain/bloat), so diva behavior should probably be expected.

  3. Icecat says:

I totally agree with you Snowball.

I keep thinking “when are these ads going to end?” It seems like there is a new one every damn day.

He should be grateful, because before the ads WTF was he doing?? Hadn’t seen him in years….

  4. Kaye says:

Alcoholism would explain why he looks so bad. He’s still in his 30s, he should still be a hunk. It’s sad.

  5. kelbear says:

I’m not really a fan of him but I love him in The Family Stone

  6. Ana says:

I hate those damn commericals. I used to like him before.

  7. Jane Q. Doe says:

I’ve always thought he has an odd pear-shaped face.

  8. Sudini says:

Those commercials are pretty bad. They try a little too hard to be clever. And it always struck me just how miserable he sounds in them..

I do like the one (without Luke) where it’s a bunch of guys watching basketball and the one guy’s map isn’t as big as the other (“Nah..you good”). Lol, just the facial expressions in that are funny.

  9. Susette says:

The last time my boyfriend and I saw one of those ads, we spent the next several minutes trying to think of what else Luke Wilson has going on career wise. We couldn’t think of anything.

  10. e says:

    The commercials are terrible.

  11. Whatever says:

I’m so sick of these full of themselves actors/actresses who think they are so great that they have the right to treat others like crap. ANYONE acting like that should be immediately fired from Hollywood and sent to work as a cashier in WalMart. The rest would shut up and learn to be happy for the high paying work they do have.

  12. Danny D says:

He’s Quagmire from The Family Guy…..Giggiddy Giggiddy

  13. frank says:

If he is changing any of the dialog at all, it sure is not helping. These are the most limp-wristed efforts I have ever seen. He is becoming the Mr. Coffee man before our eyes. Kids will wonder why the ATT guy is doing movies. He should count his blessings he has a career, he is by all means a one trick pony.

  14. LindyLou says:

@whatever – ITA!! Well said. What a douche this guy is. Every “actor” who pulls a hissy fit thinking they are too good for the job they are doing should try doing a couple years of 9-5 like the rest of us schlumps!

  15. TG says:

Please don’t let this be true. I love the Wilson brothers, especially, Owen, but Luke is great too in my opinion. But @Jane Q. Doe you are so funny, he does have a pear shaped face, but I like it anyway.

  16. lucy2 says:

It’s funny, I think celebs doing stuff like this think they’re gracing the audience and the company with their presence, when the audience is probably thinking, wow, look how far so and so’s career has fallen!
Considering the majority of LW’s movies have been bombs and his looks are going, he should be thankful for the opportunity. And considering how many people are still out of work, he should be grateful for a paycheck and steady work.

  17. Crash2GO2 says:

What IS up with him these days? He used to be HAWT – thin, athletic with a quirky/handsome face. Now? Eww. And with this latest report, eww on his attitude as well. Now that we know Owen is mentally fragile, I worry about Luke as well.

  18. buellblaster says:

All I think of during his commercials is how did he go from hunky to chunky monkey?

  19. debbie says:

With that “pear-face” of his…maybe Luke Wilson should hook-up with “pear-ass” Jennifer Love Hewitt! I also thought he’d put on weight…and was not as handsome as he used to be not that long ago! With the economy in such bad shape…he should be grateful for this gig!

  20. UrbanRube says:

Death at a Funeral? He’s making a movie about his career? I remember the first time I ever saw him – on “The X-Files,” the hot sheriff. It’s sad to see him devolve into Mr. Potato Head.

  21. Kate says:

I have to say I HATE those commercials… I agree with Ana, I used to like him well enough but now I think he’s a douche. And #8, I love that commercial too! It’s by Verizon, which is probably why it’s actually funny. I feel like AT&T just attacks Verizon and tries to make it funny (and fails), and Verizon just makes a funny commercial that points out it has better coverage, too.

  22. buckley says:

How do we know these rumors are true?
Somehow I don’t see him like that.

There’s a picture of him on Dlisted jogging.
So apparently he’s working on the weight…
I just like the Owen bros…

  23. Huma says:

@Danny D: Seth MacFarlane is the voice of Quagmire from Family Guy. Not Luke Wilson. Never Luke Wilson.

  24. Victoria says:

Well if I were an actor and got a commercial gig between films (esp more than 1 commercial) Id be beside myself with joy! I remember Jay Leno making fun of himself one time and saying that his longevity in the BIZ has been due to the fact that he WILL do anything!

  25. annaloo says:

I know what it’s like to have a job that you don’t like, especially when you’d rather do something else.

However, I have always performed every job I’ve been hired for well and given 100% professionalism and effort…even the ones I hated.

I don’t have respect for people who don’t.

  26. Sudini says:

    @Kate – Haha, oops! That’s pretty funny..ok, Verizon ftw then 😉

  27. meme says:

seeing celebs in commercials usually makes me dislike them and not buy the product. celebs make enough money; let some out of work actor have the TV ads.

  28. moo says:

I am sick of his stupid commercials and would never buy a phone from AT&T, so maybe he should move on down the road?

    Oh, that’s right! He’s not very talented!!! I forgot……

  29. jane says:

I have a lot of fam & friends in ent. ind. They all say that he is the biggest jerk. Also heard this from people who have met him in clubs.

  30. Morgs says:

He has serious alcohol bloat face going on.

  31. Cinderella says:

Sounds like he’s trying to be the big fish in the pond, however, he’s in a new pond and no one cares what he did at the old one.

  32. Musey says:

Aw, no, not Luke Wilson! I used to love him. I just have trouble believing that he’d be such an assy diva, because I actually met him when he was filming a movie at Bryn Mawr–I didn’t see him much, of course, but I did get a pic with him, and a lot of other people I knew got to run into him at one point or another, and he was never anything but incredibly nice and gracious to all the students and faculty.

I hope he hasn’t changed since then, but I guess it’s always possible. :/

  33. Ruffian9 says:

Dude, you’re lucky to even have that gig. Try not to fuck it up.

eta: Why on earth would AT&T even want LW as a spokeshead? It’s not like he has major star power or anything. Just a rep as a drunk.

  34. Danny D says:

@Huma, I meant he is starting to LOOK LIKE Quagmire dumb dumb
