Poor Bret Michaels, seriously. There’s a lot of information coming out about his current condition, but I’m just going to put stock in People Magazine’s version and sources. After being admitted to the hospital last Thursday, Bret was diagnosed with a massive brain hemorrhage, and since then sources have had him doing everything from making a full recovery to being close to death. Currently, People Mag claims that Bret is still in the ICU, and he is “responding well” to his treatment. Here’s more:
As Bret Michaels begins what may be a slow and painful recovery from a brain hemorrhage, the rocker got another round of bad news at the intensive care unit: He was diagnosed with a side effect that leads to seizures, his reps tell PEOPLE.
“Michaels remains under 24-hour observation in the ICU and is in positive spirits. He is responding well to tests and treatments,” the reps say in a statement. “Even though today was a minor setback, doctors remain hopeful for a full recovery.”
Michaels, 47, is conscious and in critical but stable condition at the unidentified hospital after suffering a type of stroke called a subarachnoid hemorrhage, which causes bleeding in the fluid-filled spaces around the base of the brain.
Additional tests are planned to find the cause of the rupture, his reps say, adding, “Many people are speculating Michaels’s head injury suffered from a prop striking the singer at the Tony Awards last June is the cause.” But for many patients with this condition, no cause is often found.
Doctors Hopeful Despite Side Effect
Most recently, Michaels was found to have a side-effect called hyponatremia, which is a lack of sodium in the body that leads to seizures. The reps didn’t say whether Michaels has actually suffered any seizures.“Coupled with the fact that Michaels is a lifelong Type 1 diabetic and has recently undergone emergency appendectomy surgery while on tour in San Antonio, he will remain monitored closely by his medical team to make sure no complications occur from the diabetes,” the reps say.
They add that doctors are “hopeful that Bret will gradually improve as the blood surrounding the brain dissolves and is reabsorbed into his system, which can be a very painful recovery and take several weeks to months.”

Meanwhile, The National Enquirer is reporting that despite questions about Bret’s recent emergency appendectomy, and whether that surgery led to his brain hemorrhage, their medical sources say no, that’s not the case. They also claim that Bret’s chances for a full recovery “don’t look good”. Dr. Brian Silver (wasn’t that a character on 90210?!?), says: “About 40% of patients with a brain hemorrhage die within the first three months In terms of survivors, probably half will have a residual disability. Only between 10 and 20% make a good recovery.” Radar’s sources say pretty much the same thing – that if Bret survives, his recovery will be long and hard. Poor Bret! I’m seriously sending him healthy vibes.
Sending healthy vibes from here too. It does not look good, but we can always hope for the best.
not a huge fan of his but i wish Brett a full and speedy recovery. he seems like a nice guy.
I hope he gets better. My husband jokingly tried on a hat yesterday that he said was a Bret Michaels hat and I thought it would be sad to lose someone that’s such a character. The Rock of Love shows are totally degrading, but the chicks on there choose to degrade themselves for mediocre fame. He cracked me up on there. Literally everything “turned [him] on”.
Sidenote: I read about the excellent level of treatment he’s getting and it makes me sad and pissed that we can’t all have such good odds of survival in those situations. Sure, he really might die, it’s even probable, but think of how someone’s odds would be if they’re uninsured and not famous.
Get better Bret. We’re pulling for you.
Sending good vibes from here too. I hope he can recover from this.
Good vibes being sent from me too. He’s a fighter, he’s gotta pull through.
What’s up with his arm pits? I thought only body builders shaved ’em.
@Ophelia That was the guilty joke we were making about all of this… “Oh, this brain hemorrhage sucks, but I got to admit, it’s turning me on a little.”
OK, I know, BAD joke. But seriously, get well soon, Brett. We NEED more Rock of Love!
personally, i’m just happy its not C.C. DeVille. I love some C.C.
Also sending healing thoughts. He is now also suffering from a condition that causes seizures, a side-effect of the sodium drop caused by the hemorrhage.
PS I love C.C., too.
The same thing happened to an aunt of mine and she did live through it after being in a coma for a while but was not near being her “normal” self.
I hope he pulls through this.
Dang, from what I had read earlier I thought this was a minor AVM… but this is really serious and sadly quite grim.
Wishing and hoping for the best for you Bret.
My dad went through this in his mid-80s. Bret is young and was probably pretty strong and I think he will recover. He may very well have some residual issues after but having him walking and talking again would be fantastic. Young people have pulled through from this lots. He’s got every motivation to get well and I’m sure his children and their mother are with him all the way. Godspeed Bret, and don’t forget who made ya.
And NO we do not need any more Rock of Slutz. They did three, and that is a plenty.
Poor, poor Bret. You just have to survive, Bret, you still have to find your rock of love. ):
Maybe there will be a sweet young nurse who looks after him and they’ll fall in love and be married for like the next 40 years. Awwww, that would be so great.
I’m rooting for you, Bret, GET WELL!
I’ve been a closet Poison fan ever since I heard, “Ain’t lookin’ for nothin’ but a good time . . . ” I say “closet” fan because I don’t care for the “hair band” image – I think it’s really stupid (and I’d be embarrassed to be associated with it). However – I love a bunch of those Poison songs, and Brett just seems like a very lovable and humble guy (I’ve never watched Rock of Love though – sounds yucky).
I’m pullin’ for ya Brett! I want to hear you sing “Somethin’ to believe in” again!!!! Love that song so much!
Ah man, am on team Brett all the way. Sending positive vibes from far away.
Like many I had preconceived ideas of him and was waiting for a train wreck on the Apprentice. Au contraire! The guy works hard, has great ideas, is a team player, a family man, and has never left his diabetes from doing anything. On top of that he’s real humble and REALLY appreciates his fans. So yeah he’s libidinous (I don’t even know if that’s a word) but he doesn’t lie about it and doesnt come off as gross, just as a good time guy who likes women.
So Brett may you recover fully–>++++ VIBES++++
Jillian- He probably doesn’t shave his armpits. My dad is a type 1 diabetic, he doesn’t much armpit hair or leg hair to speak of. Its from the atherosclerosis, there isn’t enough blood flow to grow hair.
That’s interesting, Megan. I did not know that. Thanks.
I don’t mean to be a negative nelly, but this type of hemorrage is pretty nasty. It can present at any age, and while good overall general health obviously helps, considering he is a D1 he is slightly compromised from the get go.
This wasn’t caused by the D1, or a hit on the head, or him banging random skanks, it is just an unfortunate yet rare situation that can happen to anyone at anytime and sadly it tends to be a life ending one a good percentage of the time.
Any animal that presented to us in this condition would be a DNR, I am not saying that to be unkind just factual, it is very hard to survive this type of bleed and living a ‘normal’ life is nearly impossible maybe 10-20% chance at best.
….he’s always been my secret boyfriend, he’s just got to be ok. Doctors, you have to save this one
Poor Guy. Even though his “rock the bus (aka dont come a knockin’)” show was responsible for giving 1/3 of its viewing audience crabs (those who didn’t paper the seat before sitting) somehow he always came off as an affable, likable guy- which is more than I can say about any Hair band rock star of his generation.
You’re in my prayers, Bret. Hopefully, you’ll make a full recovery. Good luck.
