Elisabeth Hasselbeck is shown in Vegas during a live taping of ‘The View’ on 6/24/08. Credit: WENN
Last month we reported that host Sherri Shepherd had drawn the ire of The View’s grande dame, Barbara Walters, and that Barbara was considering letting her go. Shepherd was involved in a minor controversy in which she said some regrettable things to a Christian woman’s magazine about how she’d had more abortions than she’d cared to count and that she’d like to see her boss Barbara “saved” by a televangelist.
Fast forward to the heated discussions on the show about the contentious US Presidential race and it’s token conservative Elisabeth Hasselbeck who’s pissing off the 78 year-old co-creator and co-producer. Elisabeth got upset in a discussion on air about VP Republican candidate Sarah Palin and Walters had to tell her to “calm down” and the show went to a commercial. Off air, The National Enquirer reports that Walters scolded 31 year-old Elisabeth and told her that if she can’t be measured in her opinions she should get a new job:
Elisabeth… got snippy [with her “View co-hosts] during a heated discussion of Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin on the show’s September 2 season premiere.
Sensing the debate was spinning out of control, Barbara ordered Elisabeth, an ardent Republican, to “calm down,” and the show immediately cut to a commercial.
“During the break, Barbara lashed out at Elisabeth,” an insider revealed. “In her typical style, she maintained her composure so it appeared everything was OK, but she made it clear to Elisabeth that she needed to calm down…”
When the taping was over, the… TV veteran had more to say to Elisabeth, according to the source.
“Barbara told Elisabeth that everyone welcomes her opinions, but demanded that she find an appropriate way to express them, and she said that if Elisabeth can’t do that, then maybe she should consider a new line of work,” said the insider.
“Elisabeth got teary-eyed and told Barbara that she feels as if the others are always ganging up on her. But Barbara quickly pointed out that Elisabeth brings most of that on herself.”
[From the National Enquirer, print edition, September 22, 2008]
It seems like they could get another conservative on The View to back up Elisabeth and represent the other side. Sherri Shepherd doesn’t count because she’s not informed enough, has admitted she’s never voted, and just comes off as a ditz. Elisabeth is decent with the guests, but she does try and dominate the conversation when they’re talking politics and her points aren’t that educated. She also gets too upset when people don’t agree with her. I like to see Whoopi because she’s funny, kind and a breath of fresh air on that show. She’s liberal but really measured in the way she presents things and is mellow and friendly. If Barbara wants a balanced panel she should create one. As it is, a lot of people say it’s skewed left and that Hasselbeck is a weak voice for the right.
If everyone got along though the show would lose some of its appeal and we definitely wouldn’t be talking about it as much. When Hasselbeck’s liberal nemesis Rosie was there The View got some of its best ratings despite being difficult to watch. With good-natured Whoopi running things it’s not as contentious and just doesn’t generate as much buzz despite being a much better show. Add a conservative version of Whoopi and it will be more sweetness and light and agreeing to disagree.

I think Elizabeth blew it when she talked about the demands Obama’s wife made on the View. You don’t disclose that sort of info when you’re on the show.
-
I hate hate hate hate Elisabeth. It seems that all the liberal stars are either fired or demoted; but this chick has stayed on the view in spite or her tyrannical belief system and unsubstantiated viewpoints.
You didn’t see Sherri or Whoopi whooping it up at the DNC so why does Elizabeth get a free pas to have full blown coverage at the RNC and show it on the view?
-
I would recommend that, before posting, people should educate themselves about the issues rather than regurgitate sound bytes. Palin doesn’t advocate going to war with Russia. She echoes Barack Obama, Joe Biden, and John McCain in saying that, if Georgia is a member of NATO, countries participating in NATO are obligated to come to one another’s defense. I repeat, Obama, Biden, and McCain have said the exact same thing. Please, people, think for yourselves. Take the time to learn the facts for yourselves instead of allowing yourselves to be spoon-fed ideas, whether from the left or the right.

Bye Bye Lizzie.
-
I have never liked Hasslebeck. She just seems like a little girl with big boots. She takes things way to personally. I doubt she will be that missed.
-
Well said Tiki… too many ‘lambs to slaughter’ who believe every sound byte they hear.
I sort of like Elizabeth, but then again I don’t. I guess I could probably care less about her status on The View. The only thing I WILL comment on is that she appears to care a great deal about everything she speaks about - which is an admirable quality in people.
-
I can’t stand Hasselbeck. Yes, she obviously cares very deeply and believes that what she says is right, but she doesn’t know how to form arguments that will convince people of anything other than the fact that she is incapable of forming her own opinions. I swear I’ve heard her regurgitate nonsense she must have heard Sean Hannity spout the night before.
-
Sometimes I get the impression from EH that she lives her life like a scientologist. I believe that she means well in her heart but tends to forget that her opinion is just that…an opinion. Instead she comes across wanting to convert everyone in what she believes because she thinks only her beliefs are correct. She is very young and hopefully, in time, she will look back and go, OH No, did I really say that?
Whoopi is the right person in that seat. The voice of reason and humor. -
Salty Beans: Ditto.
-
While I like Whoopi, they do all pick on Elizabeth, and it is VERY slanted towards the left. Another conservative would round things out, but if Elizabeth didn’t try to talk over everyone, they wouldn’t all gang up on her. And Barbara needs to chill-Elizabeth should be allowed to have her opinion, and since she is the only one with one different than the rest of the group, it comes across as mean spirited that Babs would threaten to fire her.
-
Hasselbeck is too forceful with her arguments. She barrels in talking too fast, overly agitated, all barrels blazing, if her conservative views are disputed. She makes a total ass of herself by ranting on too long and what comes out of her mouth makes little sense. She needs to calm down but that’s not going to happen.
-
Tiki I do speak for my self. Look at Palins church. She is all for going after people in the name of God. She sent her son into the holy war that Bush started. These people are right wing extremists who will do more to drag our country down. I do think Tiki I think alot about the issues.
-
Barbara, great response !!!
EH is a complete idiot. People like her give Christians bad names and people automatically think they are ‘bible thumpers’ and complete morons, which is sad. Just like one of her fellow Republicans said, SHE IS COCKY AND WIERD. PALIN is terrible and anyone who supports her is obviously very very ill informed..
-
I’m not accusing anyone of not thinking. I am asking that people inform themselves, not merely swallow what anyone feeds them. It would be helpful in forming your opinion, Barbara, if you watched the ENTIRE clip of what Governor Palin said at the church and not just what those with an agenda, again left or right, want us to see. Our responsibility as voters is to be an INFORMED electorate. We need to stop relying on Fox, CNN, MSNBC, or whomever to shape our opinions. The information is out there IF we are willing to do the work ourselves to find it and not leave it up to others to find it and spin it to suit their agenda.
-
She’s been acting like that for months. She should have been gone years ago. Not only is she unqualified for the job she is stupid.
-
She cries waaay too much. Much too much. I’ll be glad to see her go, and hope they can get someone else on there who can articulate opposing views with maturity and intelligence.
-
For what I’ve seen of The View, I tend to think EH perfectly encapsulates the idiocy of the Republican Party (in my eyes, at least)… so I don’t want her to go. Her stupidity alienates more people than it attracts.
-
I can’t stand this bitch. Get rid of her. She adds nothing to the show. I’m sure if they tried very hard they could find the conservative equal of Whoopi : someone funny, thoughtful, smart, well informed and articulate. As for Ms. Palin I can’t wait until someone asks her about her churches view on “curing” homosexuality.
Such a step forward for human rights everywhere. -
Excellent point Kaiser. Keep her on the View…annoying, offputting, uninformed zealot that she is… she’s enough of an advertisement of what’s ‘wrong’ with some members of the conservative right
-
I have always found her to be annoying, not based on her personal views, just cheerleader smug. After her comments at the Republican convention though, she really needs to go. It is an unwritten law of entertainment that you NEVER comment on backstage chat or contract issues. EVERYONE who goes on talk shows has a list of topics they will and will not talk about. I have a good friend that works on one of the big daytime chat shows. He works behind the scenes. If the production company found out a behind the scenes person was doing that or passing on info to the tabloids, they would be fired.
-
Tiki, no matter how you spin it, Palin is an extreme right-wing conservative. Couple that with her being very inexperienced and on the ticket with a guy that looks like he could kick the bucket any second, and you’ve got trouble.
I’ve informed myself, and Palin is exactly what I feel is wrong with our country.
-
They could ALL leave for all I care. Whoopi is the only real talent on the show anyway.
-
I agree with breederina. Being a conservative republican shouldn’t mean that you have to be a bible thumping, irrational twit like EH. I would hope there are far better representatives of the real republican party, not this Karl Rove Phyllis Shlafly version that has taken control of the GOP.
I belong to neither party but am a registered independant. So I am one of those voters that is on the fence until I find out the issues each party stands for. EH makes me cringe, not something I think the GOP wants being the voice of their party.
-
Nouvel, Courtney - I completely agree. Palin gives Christianity a bad name. She represents all the narrow-mindedness, self-righteousness and ignorance associated with fundamental extremists. I don’t get it. People really need to examine what she believes in and stands for rather than just sticking to their party lines. I feel Americans base their vote too much on their gut and emotions rather than their brains. I’m nervous for our country.
As for EH, I can’t stand her. Like Kaiser stated, she represents all that is wrong with the Republican party. I don’t think people would care if she was no longer on the View.
-
I can’t watch that show as long as that cow is on it. Elizabeth is so naive but charges into every verbal throw-down never knowing the facts. She’s an embarrassment to professional young women everywhere.
-
How patronising, Tiki and RAN, the whole Republican platform is based on sound bites fed to the lowest common denominator and diatribe so before you tell others to educate themselves, you should do the same.
-
She reminds me of a kid sitting at a dinner table with adults.
Out of all of the conservative women….they picked her because she very poorly represents the Republican party. The producers aren’t stupid, they are trying to convey a negative image of a ‘typical Republican’. I don’t buy it and never watch this stupid show anyway.
-
Lizzy is so imature for a 31-year-old. She should know by that age and in her profession how to be diplomatic. Sounds like kindergarten to me and I’m 7 years her junior…..
-
Why does Barbara hire these Christuian right extremists to begin with? We all now they are zealots who cant really implement true Christian tolerance.
-
OFF WITH HER HEAD!
-
THE DEM’S. ARE RUNNING LIKE SCARED PUSSIES !!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Hopefully in seven more years you’ll be mature enough to not only spell words correctly, but also have gained the intelligence to distinguish between real matters and opinions. Especially those from a talk show. We can only hope you’re more the exception than the norm that will possibly become our leaders of tomorrow…
-
E. H is the only one worth listening to on this show. The others are always saying the same old communist diatribe, I been hearing since the 60’s. I won’t listen to it anymore. I still believe in the core idea of Liberty,,(under God). Why are so many,so ready to throw it all away, in exchange for the “Tyranny of the State” ? For the “Left”, the central government is their god.
-
hey barbara—
get a back bone and “FIRE” e.h.!! i don’t watch your show because of her…
she’s been there-done it–just ask her and she’ll tell you. she brings her republican “TALKING_POINTS” to the show–i see plenty of her on the internet–i refuse to watch the show…
say bye-bye and get rid of her….
cheri
-
Poor girl. She was threatened by someone smarter than her, so she lashed out at Michelle O. Now her immaturity is coming back to haunt her. I hope someone can help her out.
-
OK HERE I WILL SAY IT A THOUSAND TIMES NO ONE SHOULD GO OFF THIS VIEW SHOW EXCEPT BARB SHE GETS JELLOUS SO LATER I WILL WRITE A VERY IMPOTANT LETTER TO CH,2 AND SUDGUEST THEY GET RID OF BARBARA SHES THE PROBLEM BYE FOR NOW
-
Please let her go…she is not a sport…she always takes comments about republicans like it is a “personal” thing! She can’t be “civil” on comments and opinions…it seems like it is always a competetion and she always has to be defensive…she has a very immature approach. Being invited to the white house doesn’t make you an expert in politics…GO ELIZABETH and just take care of your kids and family. You can’t be a talk show host…you may be a survivor…but don’t act like you’re so tough to be a savior. You know that there are a lot of people who hate you.
You brought it to yourself. Just GO! -
Get rid of EH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Ok, I am sick and tired of everyone just saying excatly what MSNBC and the NY Times says about Sarah Palin, why doesn’t everyone take the time out before opening their mouths and do some research before forming their opinions on the matter. That is why the rest of the world thinks Americans are stupid. People just listen to what the TV anchors tell them.
-
You know what’s weird? Whenever there’s a big post about The View, suddenly a bajillion new people start posting…
It’s like there are thousands of people out there with a “View” fetish. Like those people who dress up in animal costumes - weird.
-
I do think Barbara put EH on notice, that if she doesn’t control herself she will be left without a job - on to Sarah Palin, she may be very intelligent, but she is the same ole Republican nominee. They run on three things: Fear, Hate, and War - and she is definitely more of the same.
-
When you get rid of Elizabeth i will start watching again..My lady friends and i can’t stand her..So we do NOT watch…
-
Dudes get on here and they’re all “angry white men.” The “lefty” ladies make sense. Tough guy Frank needs to join the military and take a bullet for the country - one less angry white man around.
-
Yeah I noticed that EH does come off a bit strong on her opinions. She does need to dial it back some otherwise she comes off as being like Rosie.Joy Behar(sp?) needs to back it off to.I can’t hardly stand to watch much of that show anyways.
-
If she is let go, it’ll be the best thing that could have ever happened to her. If she’s a Christian, she knows that God closes a door to open another (and better) one. Quite frankly, I think television in general would be better off without the View, although I have to admit, I’ve only seen it through clips off the net. But from what I can tell, it’s just a celebrity fighting session that solves nothing and makes no notable contribution I can think of.

All I can say is that Palin thinks we should go after Russia. She is uninformed just like EH. Palin will get us all killed if her craxy self gets near the white house.
