The Celebrity Apprentice Winner is… (spoiler for last night’s finale)

The Celebrity Apprentice Season 3 Finale After Party

The finale of Celebrity Apprentice was last night and Bret Michaels emerged the winner in the live event versus Holly Robinson Peete. Bret recently suffered a health crisis with a massive brain hemorrhage on April 21, about 10 days after he’d had an emergency appendectomy. He was out of the hospital and headed for a full recovery earlier this month, but suffered a setback with a minor stroke just last week. Michaels hung in there and was present for the finale of the show in NY. In case you think he got the sympathy vote for weathering such incredible health problems, many people said that he outperformed Peete in the final challenge and was consistently the best contestant overall. Peete of course held her own though, and won more money than anyone on the history of Celebrity Apprentice or regular Apprentice.

While most of the television-watching audience was trying to parse out whatever was happening during the finale of “Lost” on Sunday night (when was the last time you had a memory in the third person?), the real drama was going down a few clicks away on the season finale of “The Celebrity Apprentice.” In a dramatic two hours of rapid-fire reality TV, Bret Michaels and Holly Robinson Peete squared off in an epic duel that ended not only with Michaels’ amazing recovery but also with his Snapple-fueled victory.

Most people would assume that Michaels’ victory was simply a feel-good move by Donald Trump in order to provide a fitting end to what has been a great story that has accidentally incorporated the Poison frontman’s real-life health struggles. While Michaels seemed to be perfectly healthy on the live portions of Sunday night’s (May 23) episode, he was still in the hospital and in relatively ill health as late as Thursday of last week. But Michaels’ win was also because he simply did better in the challenge, out-dueling his opponent in just about every aspect the Snapple executives cared about (Michaels’ commercial, featuring former baseball great Darryl Strawberry wearing a beret and talking about pears, was especially excellent). Holly didn’t even seem that upset in the very professional boardroom scene, as though she knew that Michaels’ had outdone her (though you had to feel a little sad that her daughter was rooting for Bret and not for her).

Of course, the competition was just one aspect of last night’s show. The finale brought back all of the already-fired contestants (well, except for Sharon Osbourne and Bill Goldberg, whose absences were not explained at all), which reminded everybody why this season was so incredibly entertaining in the first place. Cyndi Lauper rolled around on a desk for reasons that nobody could quite figure out, and even though he didn’t say much of anything, Rod Blagojevich managed to look like he didn’t know where he was or what was going on (which is exactly what made him charming in the first place). And look! There’s Sinbad!

In the end, this season of “The Celebrity Apprentice” stood tall as one of the most surprising series of the television season. Though the two hour length was often punishing (even the finale felt just a touch soggy), it brought together some incredible personalities and put them in usually silly situations. And it also solidified Michaels’ as one of the finest stars of the celebrity genre (which, in 2010 terms, is about the equivalent of being the best hair metal frontman).

[From MTV]

With the Celebrity Apprentice title Michaels earned $250,000 for his charity, the American Diabetes association. On top of everything else, the 47 year-old singer suffers from Type 1 diabetes. Snapple, the sponsor of the final challenge, matched Michaels’ donation with a $250,000 gift to Peete’s cause, the HollyRod Foundation for autism awareness. Peete has a three year old son with autism.

I’m just glad the guy is ok and hope he takes it easy from now on. He’s been through so much and it can’t help to keep pushing himself like this. Hopefully he’ll rest and recuperate after his hard fought battle both in the hospital and the board room.

Here’s Bret discussing his medical condition. When asked about whether he’s risking his life to be on the show, Bret jokes that “lately it seems like me just standing up is risking my life.”

And here he is winning. Thanks to AOL Television for these clips.

That’s nice for him. He needs some good news.

  2. Dallas says:

Congrats to Bret! I thnk he got the “sympathy” vote………..Holly did a fabulous job and if Bret had not gotten sick, she would have won.

  3. Sarah says:

Congrats to Brett. Now he needs to rest and get healthy. He looks rough. Too much, too soon.

  4. Cinderella says:

Now he needs to go home and take it easy. For real.

  5. the other mel says:

I am so happy Bret won. I think he surprised everyone with his performance during the entire show, his graciousness throughout, and his winning, can-do fighting spirit. That he showed up at the finale was just plain amazing and brought a little tear to my eye. Now that’s good TV.

  6. ogechi says:

    Am happy he won. CONGRATS

  7. MaiGirl says:

You know, I like this guy. He’s a walking broke-down rock cliche, but he is such a nice and creative person. I do think he got the sympathy vote as well, even though I do think his Snapple project was a bit better, but I think Holly outperformed him prior to that project, and raised soooooo muuuuuuuch moooooney! Anyhoo, I’m happy for Bret, and I’m happy that the HollyRod Foundation got yet another amazing donation. I sometimes work with college students with this disease. It is devastating.

  8. Annicka says:

I’m so glad he won. Holly is an unrelenting BITCH.

  9. nycmom10024 says:

I too think he got the sympathy vote, but having said that good for him. He could certainly use some good news, even fluffy stuff like this.

But lets face it, she was a better contestant. In business you want people who can deliver the goods, not just the “nice” ones.

As always men never use a perjorative for a strong and successful man and yet we women continue to refer to other woman as bitches, shame.

  10. Jeri says:

Congratulations to Brett! But does he have to go to work for the Donald and if so, what will that do to his other interests (touring w/the band). Will he bow out & Hollie will go to work for Trump in place of him?

Don’t watch the show or keep up with it but winners used to go to work for Trump.

  11. Annicka says:

nycmom, Donald Trump doesn’t have sympathy unless he’s getting a sexual favor. If anything, I think Bret got it for his perseverance and the fact he doesn’t complain as much as Holly.

  12. Juice in LA says:

I hope his health troubles are behind him and I am happy for him that he won this. Its a bonus that everyone thinks he deserved to win.

The one thing that has resonated for me about this guy, ever since Rock of Love 1 (when I actually watched his reality career) is that he isn’t a Deuce, or a drug addled hollywood flake. He comes off as totally genuine, straightforward- all except the hair. But I forgive him that. So he wants to keep the blonde? If that is his most ridiculous/horrible trait, he has risen far above his Hair Band colleagues.

  13. Juice in LA says:

Oh also- NOW can Someone give Holly a real acting job? I have always loved her!!!!

  14. nycmom10024 says:

    Annicka,
There is perseverence and than there is foolhardiness. When you have nearly died at least once in the last month, quite possibly twice and have chronic (lifelong) disease it may be wise to take care of your health for you and your family. Just my opinion.

As to Trump, I think he does get something from it positive feedback from viewers and giving the people what they want. It is just a TV show after all, so he loses nothing. But they both get the money and Snapple would like Holly on their board. Why because she can deliver.

We all cheer for Brett for all the reasons Kaiser listed.

  15. Sandra Thayer says:

Brett Michaels won on his talent, hard work, love for his daughter and hate for the disease.

  16. Wendy says:

I am so happy that he won. He really deserved the win. C’mon, Daryl Strawberry in that get-up? That’s frickin hilarious.

    Love you Bret Michaels!

  17. Bella Mosley says:

    Dallas
In no way did Holly win. She lost 2 out of 3 challenges while Bret won all of his.
As for winning the most money – she really didn’t. She said on the show that she had regular contributors to the HollyRod foundation and all she did is call them to donate to her on Celeb Appren instead of HollyRod. No one else has their own foundation or their own list of contributors to call.
She also was hateful and Bret was nice. Just shows you can be a winner and not be mean.

    NYC mom
Yes snapple says Holly would be great for the Board. She is cut throat and all business. Bret on the other hand, Snapple said, was all Snapple and the most creative.
So both have their place and in my opinion, could be a good team.

Holly probably doesn’t rec acting jobs because there are so many other good actresses that aren’t so hard to work with

  18. Janet says:

I thought Bret’s performance during the whole season was great – he really pulled through in all challenges – for Rod B. in particular. I don’t remember who won that round – I was too busy being impressed by Bret. I enjoyed watching his creative process. Holly got things done, but wow, kinda witchy. Having her raise money (which Bella pointed out she does professionally) was like having a professional dancer on DWTS – not fair. Bret rose to the challenge every time. No way was this a sympathy vote and I wish the Donald and others had made that clearer.

  19. Kelly Richard says:

Well said Bella! I was hoping someone would bring up her regular contributors. After watching Brett on Rock of Love, I still think he’s a walking STD, but I have a lot of respect for his creativity, perseverance and hard work. He also seems self-conscious and a little vulnerable. But a very genuine person. I hope he recovers fully so he can rock on!

  20. womanfromthenorth says:

Good for him, now go rest will ya Brett.

  21. original kate says:

maybe it’s just me, but i find it odd that bret collapses, makes a miraculous recovery, gets a bunch of PR…collapses, makes a miraculous recovery, gets a bunch of PR…collapses – you get the idea. not saying it’s all just a stunt but day-um! he is either the luckiest mofo in show business or his PR people are geniuses.

  22. Candice says:

Im happy for Bret. Bret and Holly look so cute in the above photo.

  23. GatsbyGal says:

YAY BRET! Poor guy looks really worn out, though. I hope that after this, he spends a couple weeks just chilling on the sofa with some comfort food.

  24. Confuzzle says:

Now go bang some more skanks on tv, Bert.

  25. JJ says:

Gotta say . . . I was prepared to boo Bret off the screen at the beginning of the season. He really did a good job, and won me over. Was probably the nicest of all contestants, too.

Holly was a piece of work. Got results, but what a control freak. And took credit for doing every task all by herself, when the point was to work in teams . . .considering her husband’s an athlete, she seems not to know there’s no i in team.

  26. Diva says:

Bret’s done “banging skanks” on tv as I understand it… he quit Rock of Love because he reunited with his ex and mother of his children.

I <3 Bret this year, for the first time since 1990, lol!

  27. Em says:

I don’t think it was solely a symp vote. Sure she won the most money, but I think Bret did a much better job understanding the personality and direction of a company.
I suppose in a sense it was him getting sick that helped him, not because Trump felt bad for him but because he showed a lot of dedication to his work for showing up to the finale even though he had several valid reasons not to.

  28. Sns02215 says:

I am SO glad that Bret won! And to the naysayers that say he got it just for the ‘sympathy vote’…well that is just BS.

As for Holly, I didn’t mind her until I saw her on this show. Apparently, she is one controlling BITCH and took every opportunity she had to prove that. What really did it for me was the week her husband came by with her kids and she got all tearful (with joy, one would hope) and then 30 seconds later, lamented that her husband was stealing her thunder for the large pile of cash she raised.

Really? That’s all that goes through her mind? Not how HAPPY she was to see her family?

    What a BEEYOTCH!

  29. Eye Opener says:

I have sooooo fallin in love with him!!!

Didn’t care for him on Rock of Love but he blew me away with his REAL personality on C.A.

Congrats my friend and may God continue to bless you! YOUR HERE FOR A REASON!!!

  30. AnnieK says:

I disagree with those that say Holly was good. Holly’s tactics througout the season were underhanded and her type would be a liability not an asset to any company. A company with no integrity is a company without foundation.
