Angelina Jolie made a UNHCR video in Ecuador

jolie14

While she was in Ecuador last week as part of a goodwill trip with the UNHCR, Angelina Jolie met with Ecuador’s president Rafael Correa. According to PopSugar, Jolie and the president discussed “issues related to displaced people in the area.” PopSugar has some good photos too! Anyway, Angelina also made this video (below) while in Ecuador. I’m not sure if she did this as some kind of official testimonial of a refugee, or if she was just making a general video to highlight one woman’s story. At first I thought it was kind of artsy because of the back of this lady’s head blocking part of the shot, but it’s on purpose, because the woman doesn’t want her face shown.

Angelina Jolie has been on a humanitarian trip to Ecuador and in honor of World Refugee Day, the actress sent out a special video message that included an interview she did with a local woman who escaped from violence-torn Colombia.

Jolie, who is a United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and Goodwill Ambassador, went to Ecuador – which borders Colombia – eight years ago. At the time, there were 300 registered refugees. Today, there are 50,000 and over 100,000 identified. In the video, she spoke to one woman who shared her tale of escape.

“We would like to share a little of her story,” Jolie began before speaking to the woman through a translator.

“They were always living in fear… many times they had to sleep out in the bush because it was too dangerous to stay in the village and sleep in their own houses,” the translator relayed. “When she was back in Colombia, she lost two sons… to violence.”

The woman, who is a midwife and was kept anonymous due to security reasons, also helped deliver her daughter-in-law’s child as they were crossing the Colombia-Ecuador border two years ago. The woman said that even though she lived next to a health center, new moms would come to her to deliver their children because they trusted her more.

“Next time, I come to you,” Angelina said. The woman countered, “I can come to you!”

Also during the trip, Jolie stopped in at a daycare center run by the Women’s Federation of Sucumbios province. Jolie played with some of the children there, laughing as one little boy shyly turned away grinning as she offered him a toy cheeseburger.

[From Radar]

I think Angelina must have spent two or three days in Ecuador, then flew to Haiti for a day-long visit on Sunday. Of course, considering the “undercover” nature of Jolie’s Haiti visit, people are now saying that she’s trying to adopt a Haitian child. A source told a British paper, “She met officials and there has been a lot of talk that she is desperate to help the children and is thinking of adopting one.” Eh. I could see her adopting again, of course. But I think she was probably in Haiti for World Refugee Day, not to look into adoptions.

    She’s doing good work. Kudos.

  2. meme says:

what’s with the new phony speaking voice, saint angie ho?

  3. LOVE ANGELINA says:

What phoney voice? Thats how she sounds. Angie is no phoney. Anyway, I always love seeing Angie and watching her do this work makes me happy. I would really like to see a better outcome for refugees. Such a hard life to suffer through, they truly have a special kinda of strength.

  4. justathought says:

Jolie should be voted “Celebrity Humanitarian of the Year”….if there is such an award. She doesn’t just get out the check book. Her willingness to participate in person while advocating aid throughout the world is admirable.

  5. viper says:

meme while superfical snobs attend minotmous asinine shows; ANGELINA is out in a swamp trying to HIGHLIGHT what actually SHOULD matter to us. You’re outlook towards an individual actually contributing to a real cause being a negitive one is misguided. I pity you and those that fall beside you in the ranks of grotesque, pitiful, empty, lifeless, heartless souls.

What are you and others like you doing with yourselves that supposablly gives you all the right to such an opinion? Let alone an opinion at all on such a matter of philathrapy. Are you donating HALF your income to chairty? Or are you one of those ‘ live your own life you only get one’ insects?

  6. Miranda Ann says:

She’s doing GREAT work!! Angelina is an amazing woman. Just wanted to get that in before the “negative ninnies” get on to say what they always say.

Also, I’m with you Kaiser. I don’t think Angelina is trying to adopt again just yet but the ragmags need some story to explain why she’s in Haiti and it’s so “undercover.” They don’t want to believe it’s just for security reasons.

  7. Anya says:

Angelina is tirelessly devoted to this work for over 10 years now. That Amazon jungle area on the border with Columbia where she is standing is so dangerous that there is a US State Department advisory to not travel there due to violence and kidnappings by people who roam at will across the border. Ecuador working with the UNHCR is doing what it can to assist the refugees who have fled there while trying to find safety.

The lady being interviewed is a midwife who has lost 2 sons to the violence in Columbia. All she asks for is peace.

Haiti is still not allowing international adoptions at this time.

  8. Holly says:

If it’s “undercover”, then why is it the entire world knows about it? And Viper, your post is ridiculous. People don’t have to worship her in order to be acceptable people. You don’t know any of us here.

  9. meme says:

oh please viper, give it a rest. two paragraphs for a one sentence comment stating MY opinion, which I believe I am allowed to have. this is still america, yeah?

  10. RHONYC says:

    touching. 🙂

  11. koliber says:

    “Happy World Refugees day!”??????
    WTF????

  12. irena NL says:

Bless her work! But she looks drained, undernourished, the hair scraggly. She needs to take some R&R for herself.

  13. lucy2 says:

I doubt the adoption story – didn’t they halt all adoptions in Haiti after the disaster? Plus they run those stories every time she sets foot in another country.

  14. Cheyenne says:

The adoption story is almost certainly fake. But it’s a slow news week and the slag rags need something to sell their magazines.

@Viper: Haters gon’ hate. Don’t sweat it.

  15. phlyfiremama says:

So what if she IS trying to adopt? Instead of a desperate life of starvation, abuse, uncertainty and early death, any child she adopts will be well cared for, educated, travelled, and have a chance at a good life. Go Angie! There isn’t a person on this planet that hasn’t had rough spots in their lives, the difference is what people make of it going on in their lives. Angelina is truly making a difference, just look: all you folks who sit at your computer doing nothing but picking other peoples lives to pieces are at least considering something else along with the hate. Progress!

  16. Allie says:

Angelina Jolie seems so happy when she’s helping others… idc what people say she is clearly a good person.

  17. really says:

WTF is that voice?! Can’t stand her even if she feeds baby Jesus.

  18. kim says:

Angie you should be shopping on Robertson or tanning on the beach rather than visiting refugees

  19. Claudia says:

I love this beautiful Lady. Angelina Jolie makes a difference…

  20. Fefer says:

Oh, what a saint. When she dies we should make a world holiday for her.
    Saint Jolie day.
She would be the first wh*re to be considered a saint! What a victory…

  21. mln says:

Did anyone actually watch the video and listen to the refugees’ story? She lost two of her sons’ to war and was forced to leave her home with the rest of her family. Can we be mature enough to recognize that her story is tragic and we should all take a minute to thank whatever gods/fates we believe in that we don’t know what that experience is like. I don’t think you have to worship Angie to admit that woman’s story should be heard.

  22. viper says:

It’s WAS undercover, media is RECORDED then released AFTER the individual in question has done their work and is safely out of the country, not during nor before. Hence it being underover.

As for the worshiping I am not certain where you came up with such an outragiously dramatic conclution to my assessment of meme’s character. The issue was and still is, the fact that individuals like meme who don’t do shit with themseleves to better the situations of other peoples plight; are on here calling such people who actually do give a damn and ACT upon their priniciples/morals/concerns/beliefs as ‘phony’. Again what is the basis for their grotesque insinulations? Why attack an inidivudal or faulsely accuse them of being ingenuine? Their arugments are absolutely baseless, esspeically in the case of Jolie and her reasoning behind all her actions.

You’re right in stating I don’t know such people, I am blessed enough to know people of better qualities. Those that surround ME actually DO give a damn and ACT upon those beliefs. I don’t tolerate people who say they care but go about their lives in the other direction as if they world can’t touch them…but hey they care.

Angelina Jolie is an honourable woman with the best intentions, she is someone to look up to not bash. If anyone needs an example of hollywood success; look to the woman that truely rebels against what most insist should be a norm and accepted. It doesn’t demand worshiping it demands appreication. She’s human not an idol.

I would have people also put this into perspective: She could easily die in one of her UN missions – her children could lose their mother. That’s her sacrifice that she is willing to pay. -There is a reason for the reinforced bullet proof vest – She does all this to HIGHLIGHT and bring attention to people like the woman in this clip need.

How can someone like that be called phony?! What a discusting thing to insinuate. What leangths must an individal go to, to be considered as humane and caring??? Must they be martrs before people can open their hearts?! I’m sorry but that’s just immoral and unethical. She can’t do much more and no matter what she does it’s ‘phony’ oh and she’s a whore.

Discusting, truely, a person who does all they can without resorting to hostile take-overs, wars, and violence is truely a villian and minipulator- shame on them.

  23. Nuharoo says:

“Oh, what a saint. When she dies we should make a world holiday for her.
    Saint Jolie day.
She would be the first wh*re to be considered a saint! What a victory… ”

Beg to differ, there was Eva (Evita) Peron.

  24. She-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named says:

meme: the ‘saint angie ho’ thing is so tired.

Fefer: “Oh, what a saint. When she dies we should make a world holiday for her.
    Saint Jolie day.
She would be the first wh*re to be considered a saint! What a victory…”

I think you’re thinking of Mary Magdalen, purported to be a repentant prostitute. I’m pretty sure she actually IS a saint.

The Catholic church, that great bastion of tolerance and forgiveness, makes even people like you seem like bitter, hate-filled misogynists.

  25. Fefer says:

Evita Peron is not a saint.
As for Mary Magdalen, people say she was, other that she wasn’t. We don’t surely know.
    But Angelina we know 😉

As comment for the adoption possibility, I wish she does. One more kid adopted by her means another nanny that gets a job.

The point is: I don’t get people forget who she really is just because her charity work.
It’s like the politicians. I don’t forget that they steal us just because they’ve built a nursery school.

I admire Angelina as an actress, I love her work, I watch every movie she does… but as a person… mehhhhhh, I just can’t do it.

    Sorry, it’s just my opinion.

  26. Kitten says:

@ fefer- Didn’t realize you actually KNOW Angelina Jolie. I mean, you clearly must spend a lot of time at the Jolie-Pitts for dinner if you so strongly dislike her “as a person”.
If you want to hate on her, fine but why pretend that it’s based on anything rational? I mean it’s ok to have your opinion about a celeb-they put themselves out there and sometimes for whatever reason, we just dislike them. That’s fine, but stop making it seem like you dislike her as a *person*, implying that you know her on a personal level.

  27. CD says:

“The point is: I don’t get people forget who she really is just because her charity work.”

Why don’t you enlighten us fefer about who she really is.

  28. Fefer says:

Ok, clearing things. I don’t know her personally, I don’t even want it.
I don’t know all about her, but I know some, enough to make my personal opion disliking her in personal.
My friend is a top model, married to a known cineast, and they all say the same thing about her.
Sorry. Maybe you think her attitudes doesn’t make her a wh*re, and for me, it does.
That’s not a problem of knowing or not knowing, it’s really a problem of opinion.

  29. viper says:

Jealousy is an ugly face to be burdened with fefer. Your reasoning is flawed, illogical, and weak. The truth is you don’t know her; and when it is a question of her character: none of us can conclude she is a bad person. When her actions since she was 25 and even younger woman, have spoken of a selfless, lost, lonely and in search of identity restless soul. Our opinions of her don’t matter to her, when she has her kids to cling to for reassurance and love and with a man to stand by her side. Not that she ever needed one to be strong.

  30. Liz says:

Keep up the good work Angie! Continue bringing attention to the plight of refugees . Proud to be a fan.

  31. Deb says:

You all sound so young and naive, how sweet.

  32. Mare says:

I can’t judge her other trips but I can say something about her visit to Bosnia few months ago because I live in Croatia, next to Bosnia, and I’ve been reading bosnian web sites after her visit. It had no visible impact. She met with few political leaders, they politely nodded their heads and after she left media was making fun of it all. Of course they were not taking her seriously and of course they will not change anything because of her visit. Apart from making few refugees she met that day happy, her visit was pretty much useless.

  33. Jeri says:

Her hair & make-up is more subdued this time. Perhaps she did not bring her full hair/make-up posse along for a change.

Lends some realism to her effort, hard to take her seriously when she has perfect hair & make up while people are suffering around her.

    Encore. Encore Angie.

  34. Lilias says:

Did she for real say “Happy Refugee Day”???

What is happy about being a refugee?

  35. viper says:

That’s usually the case too sadly. She can’t really do anything to impact actual politics. All she can do is use her ‘celebrity’ to bring awareness. She does what she can and that’s not enough because she isn’t into politics, and in all honesty I hope it stays that way.

  36. nan says:

A beautiful woman with a beautiful heart. What’s with all the trashing? You people are idiots!!

  37. Beth says:

I find it laughable that people have such high expectations of Angelina. She’s just like any other celebrity. The only thing she can do is bring attention to a cause and donate money. I don’t get why people expect Angelina to save the refugees when goverments and charities can’t. Why doesn’t anybody ever have these expectations for George Clooney, Bono, etc?

  38. She-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named says:

“Why doesn’t anybody ever have these expectations for George Clooney, Bono, etc?”

because George Clooney and Bono aren’t threatening to their self esteem.

    Great points, BTW

  39. DD says:

What’s next Happy Poverty Day? Bless AJ’s good heart, but she’s not the brightest bulb out there. She’s a pretty face for the cause, but it’s not like she can permanently change their situation during her day tour of awareness. That’s what the organization as a whole is supposed to accomplish over time, not an actress, mother of six, “woman” to brad pitt and part-time humanitarian.

  40. Orbit says:

Viper, I’m pretty sure that’s the worst spelling I’ve ever seen on the Internet. You should stick to little words and ideas.

  41. mln says:

@fefer the fact that she makes more of an effort to be respectful to refugees than models and cineast(whatever that means) makes alot of people respect her fierce unfakeness

  42. viper says:

    @ Orbit

I wrote it on the spot and I wouldn’t change a thing. Spelling and indeed my grammar are both sorely lacking. And yet here I am telling you to READ what I said and pay no mind to the impulsive submission.

You’re attempt at insult needs polishing and is sorely lacking in originality.

    FAIL

  43. Widget says:

@orbit: Viper’s a nasty, mean-spirited little troll, and her/his/its response to you just makes it all the more clear. You should have seen the thread where he/she/it was claiming to be a doctor, LOL.

  44. Angel says:

Yeah. What celebs really need to do is to suntan, shop, drink & drive, get into crazy fights, and act like selfish, spoiled divas. God forbid they try and do something more positive and meaningful with themselves. Some of you people are seriously sad. FAIL all around.

  45. Holly says:

Viper is seriously scaring me. Once again, you don’t know anybody on this board. You don’t know what they do when they aren’t blogging. You’re here blogging too. How are any of us different, from what we can tell? And no, I don’t think celebs should waste their lives (as most of them do), but I don’t always agree with Angie’s actions. And I don’t have to. It’s really ok. Calm down.

  46. Lorelei says:

I would like to join a couple of posters above in one gargantuan WTF? ‘Happy Refugee Day?????!!!!!!!!!!!!’ Is she retarded or something? How can she say something like that without (obviously) thinking it through. Now, I used to love the old Angelina. She was beautiful, ballsy, and really messed up. She was brutally honest and free spirited. This new ‘persona’ she created for herself doesn’t fit her at all. Yes, she did do something with her voice; she’s trying to make it sound softer and kinda ‘britishy’. I’m sick of her acting slightly sad/slightly worried whenever she talks to people who’ve been through hell. Google it, she always looks the same. Sadly, because she’s starved herself to death, she’s also lost her beauty. She looks emaciated, and her hair is really thin. I hate the fact that she pretends to care about war torn countries and then buys her son a knife collection and has military themed birthday parties. She is such a hypocrite, it makes me sick to my stomach. Bleeech…
