Joan Rivers reminds Victoria Beckham that she’s only a Spice Girl

mrp-000150.jpg

That Joan Rivers doesn’t know when to keep her mouth shut. Perhaps it’s not her fault – with all the stuff that’s injected into her face, I think it’s probably due to the fact that her jaws will no longer close properly. Joan has made a living for herself by loudly criticizing famous people [JayBird laughs nervously], even though she’s about as tacky as they come. Though she’s been demoted from most of her red carpet duties, Joan is still blabbing on about the celebrities she hates, and this time she’s taken aim at Victoria Beckham.

Joan Rivers recently insulted Victoria Beckham, saying that she is an “arrogant” woman who is “just a Spice Girl.” Rivers (in her distinctively raspy voice) was holding nothing back during an exclusive interview. “I dislike Victoria Beckham,” she seethed. “The entitlement – the total entitlement. You want to say: ‘Calm down, you were a Spice Girl.’ The arrogance when she walks into a room is astonishing.”

Joan is currently in the process of bashing celebrities in her new stand-up show “Joan Rivers: A Work in Progress by a Life in Progress.” She’s a spitfire, that one. I have a feeling that Victoria doesn’t really care: it’s free publicity, after all.

[From Splash News]

Um, and you were what Joan, the Secretary of State? Come on. I’m sure Victoria Beckham’s ego is so big it’s hard for her to squeeze through the door, but so far she has yet to annoy billions for generations like Joan Rivers. And if nothing else, Posh generally keeps her mouth shut. While I don’t really think she’s interesting (you generally have to talk to be interesting) there is no way in hell she’s as annoying as Joan Rivers. Arrogant? Sure. Too thin? Check. Way too fake looking? Posh and Joan will have to battle to the death for that title.

Sorry about this…Joan Rivers has gotten increasingly annoying in her old age but in her hay day made alot of inroads for female comedians and that type of bawdy humor. Victoria Beckham doesn’t do much of anything these days.

  2. leeanne says:

Of course, Posh isn’t supposed to be important. She’s not Jewish like Joan Rivers.

I don’t think Posh is important either, however I am getting a bit tired of the Jewish “lean” on what is cool and what is not in Hollywood.

  3. oakling says:

Whatever they both do or don’t do, Joan Rivers sounds like she’s engaged in some SERIOUS projection right there. There’s no need to be mean or play the pot versus the kettle here….

  4. oakling says:

    The Jewish what?!?

  5. Gracie says:

I’m Joan-neutral, but she has a point about Posh.

  6. Jess says:

I get a kick out of Joan and this time I totally agree with her. Posh is just a member of a really bad band from a long time ago – that’s it.

  7. Karen Sakker says:

Joan Rivers has messed with the wrong person this time. Maybe she’s just a little jealous? I doubt Joan has been half as busy as the former Spice Girl, who have broken numerous records, has been in the past few months.

    Girl Power!!!

  8. gg says:

um, no I seriously doubt Joan is jealous of Poosh. She may be a bitch but she seems a helluva lot less vacuous than the no-talent Victoria. What the hell is Vicky so busy doing, shopping?? ffs.

  9. jessiee says:

What in the FUCK does Joan being JEWISH have to do with ANYTHING, Leeanne? Check your prejudice at the door.

  10. Anna Elizabeth says:

…wow. That’s the first time I’ve ever heard someone run their mouth off about the ‘Jewish conspiracy’ in all seriousness. I’ve only ever seen that in parody.

  11. ACK! says:

I like Joan a lot and she’s spot on about most celebrities, actually. Joan holds nothing back whether she’s making fun of herself or someone else and that’s always been her strong point. Joan is one of the few original female comedians, along with Phyllis Diller, who succeeded in spite of not being members of the boy’s club. Without her and Ms. Diller blazing a trail, other female comedians would still be struggling to be accepted. She’s a gem, and I love her. The woman deserves respect for her success. I think people who don’t get it, or who think she’s too ‘mean’ to celebrities are not fully appreciating the fact that she is NOT kissing their butts and smarming all over them in order to be on good terms are missing the point entirely. Take a look at the likes of Regis and Seacrest – they wouldn’t DARE do anything but puff on the red carpet. After all, they’d obviously be crushed if one of those celebs took offense. The beauty of Joan is that she dares to not care. She does her thing and that is what makes her so damn funny. Lighten up on Joan Rivers and appreciate that there is someone like her who doesn’t waste her time commenting on celebs by slobbering about how wonderful they are and how great they look in their usually godawful outfits. “People” she ain’t, and thank God for that!

  12. MaiGirl says:

It takes a tacky bitch to know one. Looks-wise, it totally is pot v. kettle, but Joan has totally paid her dues and found a way to stay relevant in a very tough business. I don’t always agree with her, and think that some of her blows are too low, but this time I think she’s spot on.

And leeanne, the site you are looking for is CelebNAZI. You’ll fit right in.

  13. 123 says:

Hip Hip Hooray for JOAN! Couldnt of said it better!

  14. xiaoecho says:

`Joan is smart and fearless (as one should be at her age) and very very funny because she is as merciless on herself as she is on others – besides she was probably pissed out of her brain when she said it

she’s also the only person who looks OK with a botox mask

  15. headache says:

Will the anti-semite please find something else to do with yourself?

    Like play in traffic.

    Thank you,
    All of humanity.

  16. Amy says:

Joan Rivers is a stand up comedian, (no easy life) with years and years of hard work under her belt- and she’s still working! What does Posh do? Even when she was in the Spice Girls, she was the bad one who couldn’t sing. All she’s ever been good for is standing still, not eating and making faces. As an intelligent woman, Rivers has every right to call Posh out on it.

  17. mollination says:

Anna Elizabeth, what is this Jewish Conspiracy? I have only heard one allude to it, but never explained. What are we talking about here?!

    haha Joan. good on you.

  18. Karen Sakker says:

First of all, Geri is the no talent Spice Girl who can’t sing. Victoria does do other things than just shop. She models, she has several companies & is a hands on mom for 3 boys. I love it when comedians pick on celebs but I like it better when there is a little truth in what they say….

  19. joan says:

    i really dont care joan
haha, but i can totally see the whole, “The arrogance when she walks into a room is astonishing”

whatever. there is always celebrity beef/drama/hate out there which i find ridiculously entertaining. i tell ya .. rich, snobby people. *pfft*

  20. Diva says:

Joan Rivers is practically a national monument and really has paid her dues. She’s still relevant. Wonder what Posh will be in her 70’s??

  21. Sasha says:

It’s called ‘speaking the truth’ my soft, fruity, easily impressed, MTV-generationally-impaired friends. Joan Rivers has miles and miles of Hollywood cred compared to that blow-up alien sex mannequin Beckham.

  22. neelyo says:

She must have snubbed Joan. Joan always used to lash out like that when she was snubbed on the red carpet. I miss her on the red carpet. She put the whole thing on the map and while I think it’s gotten out of hand (fuck the fashion police, I miss celebrities dressing themselves and looking tacky) it was fun when Joan was there. I especially loved it when she didn’t know who celebs were.

As far as speaking her mind, let her go. She’s right about this one and I’d rather listen to Joan any day than oh say, the Osborne women who always have an unsolicited opinion on everybody and have done nothing to warrant it except live off Ozzy’s money.

  23. Anna Elizabeth says:

Mollination, the ‘Jewish Conspiracy’ is what anti-semites bitch about whenever pretty much anything doesn’t go their way. It isn’t anything in particular, because it’s just a catchall excuse for bigots and racists to not have to take responsibility for their problems.

In (slightly) subtler forms, it tends to be people saying things like ‘oh, Hollywood/the economy/the education system/et cetera is run by the Jews, that’s why there are so many problems with it, the Jews have influence over everything.’

  24. Dee says:

    Gosh.

Calm down, i’m not sure whether Leeanne meant it to be insultful or not. I’ve never liked Joan Rivers, she always struck me as being bizarre, aggravating and overall – a nuisance to see and hear on red carpets.

I adore Posh, and am probably the only one to own up to it. I like how she’s gone astray from the Spice Girls and into her own pursuits, that she should do if it’s her choice. Besides, I don’t think anybody can pull off a Botox face like V-Beck can.

  25. daz says:

    joan rocks

  26. frewt says:

Vicky’s one and only redeeming feature is her husband. I completely agree with Joan, the botorexic fembot has no reason to be arrogant, it’d get up my nose too.

  27. urmybff says:

i like posh, i think her and kimora lee would get along great! im so excited for her new season to come out…. they should give posh a full season of shows instead of the one episode of coming to america, i found her to be like an average rich woman

  28. boobaloob says:

    Dee,

I find it hard to believe that Leeann was not trying to insult Jewish people. Please go back and read her comment. And how in the hell was it at all relevant to this story? I do *not* think people should “calm down.” What she wrote was incendiary. disrespectful, and bigoted beyond belief.

  29. Bellatrix says:

    Oh, the drama!

Fighting over two rich ladies who’ve had some serious work done on their faces? What’s it worth?
    Oy…

  30. Andie says:

My friend is a journalist in London and said Victoria Beckham is hysterical and very down to earth.

  31. cici says:

i’m really NOT trying to start anything with anyone here, but I didn’t take Leanne’s mention of “Jewish lean” as antisemitic OR to mean the “Jewish conspiracy.” I for one think the Jewish conspiracy is nonsense – but that is neither here nor there for this post. What i thought she was referring to was the “stereotype” of the Jewish comedian. As a minority myself, I admit that stereotypes DO come from somewhere (even Jews are always ranting about the stereotypical Jewish Mother), altho most of the stereotypes end up as sweeping generalizations which isn’t good. Anyway, I just didn’t see anything truly harmful in her comment beyond the “generalization” but hey – those apply to all of us.

  32. geronimo says:

@andie. True. I love Joan Rivers and although she’s not always funny, kudos to her for her trailblazing as far as stand-up comedy is concerned but I honestly don’t think a lot of Americans ‘get’ VB. She says something, I read it, it’s immediately obvious to me that she’s being ironic and/or taking the piss out of herself but other people seem to take it completely at face value.

  33. elisha says:

Leanne=racist. What does her being jewish have to do with anything?

I liked Joan in Spaceballs. Classic!!

  34. Bodhi says:

I think they are both funny as hell. And I seriously doubt that Posh gives a fig what Joan says about her.

And leeanne’s comment was extremely offensive, whether it was meant to be or not

  35. Scott F. says:

Oh my God!! I completely forgot she was in Spaceballs!

“That’s my virgin alarm; programmed to go off before you do!”

I do think a lot of people in this country fail to grasp Victoria’s humor. We tend to say exactly what we’re thinking (for good or ill), while Brits tend to be a lot more tongue-in-cheek. It’s the reason I gave up trying to get my friends into Douglas Adams, Americans just don’t get it for the most part.

  36. Syko says:

I used to love Joan Rivers with her obnoxious brand of humor. I haven’t much cared for the mother/daughter act with Melissa, but do understand her desire to be with her daughter, as that’s all she has.

I also like Posh, she does look frozen in most pictures, but I’ve seen her in TV interviews where she was laughing and funny. I respect her parenting and I covet her husband.

And I thought the Leeanne remarks were extremely prejudiced and politically incorrect.

  37. headache says:

I don’t think it’s what Joan Rivers said so much as that she said it at all. Did someone ask her opinion and why did she have to be so nasty about it? People expect Joan Rivers to be funny as well as cutting. But there was absolutely nothing amusing about what she said. I think that’s what has people all atitter.

  38. Erin says:

Joan Rivers is a legend. I am so glad some people out there are still aware of that fact. And, she invented that red carpet s***. Do you ever remember it being so pervasive before she started doing it? I don’t.

  39. mollination says:

Thanks to anna elizabeth for explaining.

@Geronimo- I couldn’t agree more. Posh is super funny and down-to-eath, she is making fun of herself when she comes off otherwise.

I didn’t get offended by Leeanne’s comment. I don’t agree, but she didn’t say anything bad about Jews. I wish people would get back to throwing sticks and stones, and stop letting words hurt them so much.

  40. Dee says:

Now that more people have paid attention to Leeanne’s comment, I do see the real concern, it had nothing to do with the story at all. I was on a dull day.

    Sorry ’bout that Boobaloob.

  41. the Beav says:

I donnot think Victoria is funny at all. She says stupids things about wearing high-heels on treadmills, not wanting to be photog wearing flats whilst being pulled over by a cop (Coming to America….HUGE FLOP)- something about tractor exhausts and her husband’s private parts. I get the British humor – she’s just not funny. Her “funny” statements are self-serving and contrived designed to promote this hairbrain image she is trying to create for herself.

  42. lisa kippon says:

Joan “Messed with the Wrong Person”? friggin Posh Spice?!? please. PLEASE.

    Please.

as much as Joan’s career is beyond over, and was never much more than an annoying, high pitched blabbermouth in the first place [think Fran Drescher], she makes an incredibly true, simple, blinding fact obvious… that indeed, Her Majesty Victoria Beckham is JUST A SPICE GIRL. VB has no more claim to fame then Paris Hilton. she’s famous for being famous… famous for marrying famous, even! i don’t get why people even give a sh*t about her. she’s NOTHING.

  43. Omg says:

Joan rivers is so annoying she bugs me saying the same thing “it is just” why can’t she shut her mouth slandering celebs wen rEally she is nothing, she’s a bimbo who’s jokes are always offensive Because she’s unhappy with her own miserable life

  44. Karen says:

Victoria isn’t funny at all, EVERYTHING she does is staged. She notifies the press when she is going out, she has press releases telling us she has a sense of humour, and she plans her responses to interview questions so much that she virtually seems like a different person depending on who the show’s target audience is. If she was genuinely funny, that would have been obvious on American Idol, but instead, she just seemed vacuous: “you have nice shoes” – wtf?!? She desperately wants to be liked, and very few people in Britain like her, so she went to America. If she would just be herself, I think people would warm to her more. But for now, Joan has it spot on. Kudos.
