Angelina Jolie: “There is a side to me that isn’t completely… sane”

Here are some more photos of Angelina Jolie giving all of those poor nerds their first non-Hobbit boners at Comic-Con yesterday. Salt opens today, and it seems like Angelina is going to push through, doing press to very last day. USA Today published an extensive and interesting interview with Jolie this morning – it’s a long piece (full piece online here), so I’m just going to do the highlights:

On her character Evelyn Salt: “I loved that she wasn’t completely good. There’s something about that,” Jolie says, smiling warmly. “Not to say that’s me. But there’s certainly a side of me that isn’t completely …” She searches for the word. “Sane,” she chooses. “Or completely ‘even’ all the time. We all have our dark sides.”

On her own evolution: “My evolution, and any extremes in my evolution, has been my personality, out of the nature of what’s inside me,” Jolie says. “I’m very unaware of my public self. I don’t read anything written about me. I don’t look at magazines. I only watch the films and premieres if I have to. I still haven’t seen some of my films. If you become aware of a public self, you’re in danger of becoming a very artificial person.”

How Jolie is in person, according to USA Today: In person, Jolie, 35, is delicate in a way that seems the antithesis of her furious screen alter egos. The surprising adjective for this iconic screen vixen in real life is … sweet. Her smile, when it really turns on, is big and goofy. Genuine. It comes out when she spots a picture of a baby on a stranger’s cellphone, reaching out for it: “Is that your daughter? … Oh. So cuuuuute.” With 2-year-old twins at home, she looks at the picture again and asks, almost conspiratorially, how the baby’s hat manages to stay on. When told it doesn’t, she leans back on the couch, nodding knowingly.

On her role in 2008’s Changeling: “That was very cathartic for me. I wish [my mom] would have seen it,” Jolie says. “That was very much her: All of her strength was in the way she loved her children. She wasn’t a very strong person, but touch her children and she would rise up.”

On deciding to do Salt: “I grew up with all the guy movies,” Jolie says, rattling off a list of her favorites actors: Brando, McQueen, Pacino, “but I didn’t have the reference of a woman. Now I have daughters, and a part of me wants them to have that when they grow up.”

On being a female action star: “I was surprised a studio was ready to put that big summer movie money into something that had never worked before — a woman in an action movie that isn’t fantasy,” she says. Not the Tomb Raider films? “But that’s fantasy,” Jolie says. “It’s odd to think about. It’s always some kind of mystical thing — or there’s a pairing.”

Director Phillip Noyce on how she’s changed since he directed her in The Bone Collector: “She was relatively inexperienced,” he says. “She was also a complete unknown — a wallflower at my Sunday barbecue when she came to visit. Nobody was talking to this girl who was sitting in the corner. Ten years later? Everyone wants to talk to her.”

On Brad: “He’s definitely made me a better person. I’ve learned so much from him, as you do when you come together with another person. You both make each other better. You both learn about the best of each other, and recognize the things where you’re failing, or where you need to step up. When it’s a great partnership, you really are patient with each other,” she says. “He’s been a huge influence on me. In all ways, from my parenting to my art, to … everything.”

On her wild youth: “There was a certain madness I was going through,” Jolie says. “I learned a lot about myself. People tend to sum up times in your life and simplify,” she says, shrugging. “I would say there’s a way of being bold when you’re young that seems very brave. … What’s perceived as tough is a very funny thing. I think to be a parent is one of the scariest, boldest things to do, as opposed to, um, getting a tattoo. … Much more than jumping into a pool when you’re 20.”

On who she is now: “I see it almost as the flip side. I think I’m finally living completely free and brave. I’m bolder now,” she says. “I was a lot less when I was younger.”

[From USA Today]

Once again, a better interview than that piece of crap Vanity Fair profile. Can’t Vanity Fair hire someone decent to do their celebrity interviews? I mean, really.

As far as reviews of Salt go, the critics aren’t in love with it, but they don’t hate it either. I get the feeling that if the lead character was a man, played by Tom Cruise or whoever, the critics would really be hating on it, but because it’s a woman doing all of the stunt work and dangerous stuff, the critics are going a little bit easier on the film. Is it chivalry? I don’t know. Rotten Tomatoes scores it at 56% (for comparison, Inception is at 86%, and Tom Cruise’s Knight & Day is at 54%). USA Today basically says Angelina and her stunts are the best part of the film, and that Liev Schreiber and Chiwetel Ejiofor are criminally underused. BOO! What else…?

Roger Ebert (Sun-Times) really liked it, giving it four stars and calling it a “a damn fine thriller” and that Angelina “is one fine-looking woman. You don’t need me to tell you that. It’s why she gets the big bucks. The movies have celebrated her eyes, lips, profile, biceps, boobs, waist, butt, thighs. “Salt” pays tribute to her ankles. Anyone who can jump from the heights she does here, in the way she does it, may die from a lot of causes, but a sprained ankle won’t be one of them.” Et cetera. For a full listing of all of the top critics’ reviews, Rotten Tomatoes has them here – some good, some meh, some calling Angelina “Jean Claude Van Damme”.

Well no one is completely sane.

  2. anon says:

@denise “Well no one is completely sane”
    true 🙂

  3. bite me says:

i think the critics are being harder on the film because a female is the lead, some of the reviews i have read are downright misogynistic
Edit: no botox for La Jolie

  4. lena says:

I think Sigourney Weaver would be a good reference for a tough female action star, Uma Thurman might be another…and Pam Grier as Foxy Brown lol

Off topic, I really want her to go back to the chocolate brown hair color she had a while ago

  5. kama says:

“I’m very unaware of my public self. I don’t read anything written about me. I don’t look at magazines.”

    Oh priceless just priceless…

    Can I start laughing now?

  6. guesty says:

hands down…one of the most beautiful women in the world…

  7. lisa says:

I think too the critics are being harder and pissy because it is a woman. Most of the bigger outlets have been very positive. And the people who have seen it are stoked and give it great reviews.. Just a fun Summer Movie. I think if it was a man it would be getting better buzz. Plus they really don’t want it to do better then Inception this weekend. The Fanboys are acting like whinny girls when you listen to them go on and on about Inception vs SALT.. Stupid. two completely different movies. SALT is just trying to be a fun 93 minute escape. Not trying to “change the way films are viewed”(gag).

Anyway don’t really care what the critics say. I am seeing this tonight with 5 girlfriends.. We are sick of just seeing the woman as the sidekick and the stupid girl not knowing what to do when she is in a jam. Angie does not have to look like Arnold or a male body builder to be the hero. David took down Goliath so can Angie.

The movie looks fun.. and in the summer I will take FUN any day of the week.

(THANKS FOR THAT FIRST PIC.. SICK OF THE PEOPLE SCREAMING SHE HAD BOTOX.. YEAH.. CAN YOU DO THAT WITH A BOTOX HEAD…I THOUGHT NOT)

  8. meme says:

I guess Jolie missed Sigourney Weaver in the Alien movies and Uma in the Kill Bills. NOBODY is a better female tough broad than Sigourney GET AWAY FROM HER YOU BITCH.

  9. Solveig says:

It comes out when she spots a picture of a baby on a stranger’s cellphone, reaching out for it: “Is that your daughter? … Oh. So cuuuuute.”

-“No, my daughter is not available for adoption”

  10. kama says:

    @meme:

    YES

  11. denise says:

    @ Solvieg

    hahhaa!

  12. Cirque28 says:

Such an astoundingly fascinating human being– especially to herself.

Oh, I know! She gets asked about herself all the time in interviews and that would make anyone navel-gaze. But she seems to utter random bullsh*t and then look around to make sure someone’s inscribing it on parchment edged in gold leaf.

  13. Sally G says:

Lena and meme: I agree Sigourney Weaver was great in Alien, but it was Sci-Fi which is a form of fantasy. I think you have a point with Uma and Kill Bill, but I’m not sure that was total realism, either (didn’t see the movie).

  14. werty says:

lena: if you read youll see that she said that when SHE was young there was no female heros and shes 33(?) so i dont think there was alot of female heros but im not really into action movies so i could be wrong.
    and yeah i dont know anyone thats 100% sane, im certinely not (;

  15. Seri says:

She just looks sooooooo much like my mom. I agree with the interviewer, I like her goofy smile. It’s just nice. 🙂

  16. MaiGirl says:

I have a boy nerd fetish, so it pleases me that she visited Comic-Con. I always threaten to show up dressed as Uhura to find a husband. I’m not really kidding 🙂

  17. sunnyjyl says:

Geena Davis kicked some fanny in, “Cutthroat Island”, and “The Long Kiss Goodnight”

  18. Lady Jane says:

I think you missed the crux of this interview. The comment about being ‘very unaware of my public self.” This, coming from one of the most shrewd and cunning sculptors of public self image, is laughable. She is obsessed with her public self.

  19. lena says:

@ werty…I DID read, Alien came out in 1979, was Jolie not young in 1979? fallback.

@ Sally G I get what you are saying, but AJ being built like she is and beating up people, and jumping off high walls and buildings and not snapping in two puts her in the unrealistic action film column for me, but hey that’s all action flicks these days

  20. hanh says:

I agree. There weren’t any real female heros who could hold a movie as the title role. The only one I could remember was Sigourney in Alien, but even they made her annoying at times and weak whenever there was a man around. She only shined when all the men were dead. And even then they had to give her a little girl to explain her bravado (oh momma bear protecting baby bear!)

From the reviews that didn’t like the movie, it looks like many of them like the action but they were complaining that there wasn’t any “humanity”. Uh why can’t it just be fun? Why do we have to get deeply emotional cuz its a female lead? They didn’t care with the lack of “humanity” for male leads in their action flicks.

btw I’m 5 feet tall, petite and I kick ass in my martial arts. I can also do the stunts better and have a better endurance than any of the guys (who are bigger and beefer than I am). Looks and size isn’t everything in being able to kick ass. Although right now that I’m pregnant, not so much ass kicking going on, hehe.

  21. LolaBella says:

    Damn, she’s beautiful.

I enjoyed the interview. It just seems like she’s matured with the help of her partner and having kids; I think that’s relatable.

I love that leather jacket; must have.

    LOL@solveig.

Chiwetel Ejiofor, is one of the most underused and under-rated actors working today, IMHO.

  22. jojo says:

I think the critics are being harder because they took a script originally written for a man and gave it to a woman who wants to be strong inspired by what a man would do(?). Shit.

  23. Crash2GO2 says:

@meme: Absolutely spot on! And Sigourney acts circles around Angelina.

  24. mymy says:

She never tires of talking endlessly about herself. I find it rather uncomfortable. In the way one feels uncomfortable in real life when one friends doesn’t notice eyes glazing over as she drones on. But in defense of Jolie lots of people hang on her every word. If a man interviewed like her. I would not find him sexy at all. I do not find self absorption fascinating or sexy.

  25. Bored says:

Actually rotten tomatoes has ‘Salt’ at 80% now that the reviews are comming in. Out of the five key reviewers 4 were farourable and the only disenter interestingly enough was the only female reviewer.

  26. bite me says:

solveig: don’t you know La Jolie doesn’t buy american made 😀

  27. Cheyenne says:

Some of the reviews on Rottentomatoes were plain silly. Somebody complained that you can’t take the movie seriously. Who in hell would take an action movie seriously?

  28. ligeia says:

in other news, the sky is blue!

  29. Jordan says:

    @Cirque28, good one.

  30. CA says:

@Bored:What are you talking about?? Did you go on Rotten Tomatoes??

  31. Majosha says:

I love it — the negative reviews of “Salt” aren’t valid because the critics attempted to take the movie seriously (the horror!). Or they’re just a bunch of sexist jerks who aren’t comfortable with a strong female lead (uh huh). It certainly wasn’t because the critics in question felt the movie was yet another paint by numbers action flick with Angie scowling and pouting on cue.

Maybe if they’d released the movie well before or after the far superior Inception, Salt’s shortcomings wouldn’t be quite so obvious. But hey, the majority of the population flocks to crappy movies all the time, so Salt could still reel in the cash.

Ps: Salt is at 55% on Rotten Tomatoes. Not terrible, but not great, either.

  32. She-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named says:

yeah, that first pic definitely proves she doesn’t do botox.

I heard Inception was exceptionally good, bad luck for Salt. If Salt came out at another time, it would probably have better reviews. I still heard lots of good things about it though and will definitely go see it.

  33. Jeannified says:

    Love her! She looks great!

  34. anon says:

“She never tires of talking about herself”
neither do a lot of people but if you are being asked about yourself /your life, who should you talk about? I don’t talk about myself much, no one cares 🙂 if I was being interviewed and asked, I could find plenty to say about myself and my life and I am sure no one would want to hear it!!! but she is being asked so I just don’t get the complaint.

  35. Rosanna says:

@meme: she didn’t miss Sigourney. She simply was a TEEN (AJ was born in 1975, Alien was released in 1992, Kill Bill in 2003). So – strictly speaking – she did NOT “grow up” with strong female roles!!!

  36. Morgs says:

The lady doth protest too much when it
Comes to “her media persona”. She reads it all and reacts accordingly.

  37. someone says:

    Really?? who would of thought????duh

  38. Alex says:

@mymy Em… am I missing something? Exactly what is she supposed to talk about during an interview? Of course she’s going to talk about herself! She’s being interviewed and asked questions about (sit down ’cause this may shock you) her!

Which is exactly what every other celebrity talks about during interviews – themselves!

  39. lrm says:

Majorly good point: Uma Thurman is a kick a*s action star who is female. And she’s so understated in her presentation on the carpets and in the world. Love her. And I believe she got good reviews, as did Kill Bill series in general.

god-ya’ll act like if this movie doesn’t do well, well, it MUST be b/c she’s a woman.
Um, AJ is not a great actress, people.
She’s charismatic, beautiful and glamorous in an iconic way-she has screen presence. But, really-if the script is weak, and she’s not that great…maybe it’s just not a great film? Is that possible?

Anyway, the ratings will go up, as more reviews come in-always happens that way.

It’s just bizarre how people cannot simply accept that to the critics, it was a ‘fair’ movie….you guys are really obsessed!

I mean, I don’t hate AJ, nor am I a ‘fan’-i’m neutral with her, but really tiring of how ‘PR saavy’ she is-read: manipulative and narcissistic.

whatever-i dont know her personally, nor do I pretend to by either fawning over her, or hating her.

btw, i saw scorcere’s apprentice, and for a family movie, it was decent. definitely better than 44%! Easy to sit thru-and I agree, these critics have their heads up their wannabe pretentious ass*es sometimes. One review actually commented how cage and the lead guy were more like uncle and nephew than wise sage, how it was not very deep, etc. duh! freakin duh!!! It’s a silly summer action movie-of course it’s almost a parody of the harry potter type dramas. Not everything has to be deep, dramatic and ‘believeable’.

So, i agree-Salt doesn’t have to be more than what it is, to be good.

  40. Jeri says:

I think the critics are beginning to see she is mostly hype, no substance.

  41. Dream Puppy says:

I don’t know anyone who DOESN’T like to talk about themselves. One the easiest ways to get someone to like you is to ask them a lot of questions about themselves.

Maybe the problem isn’t the fact that this celebrity is reacting like most other humans would, but the focus of this adulation on people who I’m sure are very nice, but contribute nothing of substance or intellect to the world. We’re choosing the wrong idols to worship.

  42. The Hamm is My Dream Man says:

@Bored: Actually, rottentomatoes still has it at 56% now all the reviews are in.

@Alex: She could talk about *gasp* her movie! And her acting skills and such.

I was taught as a child that it is rude to blunder on and on about yourself. She gives people a list of approved questions and most of them apparently have nothing to do with her films.

EDIT: The negative reviews I’ve been reading mostly have nothing to do with gender or sexism. In a nutshell:

    “crushingly generic”
    “pandemic preposterousness”
    “highly produced but poorly written”,
“Angelina worth her salt as a action hero, but Salt is never worth her”,
“An absurd, twisty thriller that flirts at genuine intrigue before giving in to the worst impulses of subpar spy fiction.”
“Angelina is great and the film well made but it’s lacking in personality and moments to make it more than an extended chase scene.

The top critics page has it at 54% and the negative reviews there have nothing to do with her gender. It’s about how the movie is poorly written and directed. The actors are fine-she’s apparently great in a crap movie.

  43. amelia says:

@Rosanna: Sorry, you got the original “Alien” release date wrong. “Alien” was released in 1979. You are thinking of “Alien 3”. Which means that Angie would have totally been able to grow up with the franchise.

  44. aw! says:

WOW! She is fantastic (looks and all.)

  45. sandy says:

she is gorgeous, intelligent, great actress, tough, soft, self aware, what is every one complaining about? she is the real deal, like it or not, when she was young she hated herself as an adult and great choices, wow!! she should love herself and life, everyone should, that is why most sane people enjoy her and her life, very caring of others, not to mention generous with her time and money. is that enough? lol

  46. Alicia says:

she and brad both say they don’t read their press.

how then do they know someone wrote they were breaking up?

    let me guess…they have readers?

  47. canadianchick says:

Will order it on pay per view. She’s pretty delish in those photos.

  48. original kate says:

i hate when people talk about how “dark” they are; it’s just a way of trying to seem more interesting. it’s like describing yourself as a “badass,” which of course means you aren’t. she’s mighty pretty, though.

  49. Dhavy says:

Does everything every word that comes out of her mouth has to be dissected?

Personally I don’t watch movies based on someone else’s opinion so I can care less if they say it’s good or bad. I like her in action movies and she can definately sell the part. She’s a good humanitarian and a great actress.

  50. belle Epoch says:

@sandy – totally agree. Formidable, gorgeous woman.

Exhibit A – look Hollywood, a forehead that MOVES!!! Her acting skills are greatly enhanced by the fact that she can actually make facial expressions. Many actresses only manage to look mildly distressed, like they are trying to poop.

  51. Paulette says:

Actually, she had a whole host of strong females in non-fantasy roles on television. Emma Peel, Wonder Woman, Charlie’s Angels, the Bionic Woman, Cagney and Lacey. Heck, even Nancy Drew. It would be nice if she could pay tribute to those who came before her even if it was only the small screen–maybe then she wouldn’t be quite so narcississtic. Truly gracious stars find a way to do that and then it becomes a more enjoyable moment for all as we share the memories.

  52. krs says:

    I love her. So much!

  53. Mazzoo says:

Action star, pfffft. Linda Hamilton/Sarah connor could snap Jolie’s twiglet body in two.

  54. sosorrry says:

I agree with Lena about Sigourney Weaver, AJ is okay but I don’t buy her as an action star…she’s more like a model at a photo shoot pretending to be an action star.

  55. Mrs Odie 2 says:

She jumped into a pool in her Golden Globes dress at 20 because she was a coked out attention whore. I may have the wrong drug, but I know the type.

  56. autotron says:

Ugh, her hair always looks like she just worked out. BORING, but she works her ass off trying to convince everyone she isnt.

  57. K McFarlane says:

Alicia, she wouldn’t need to read her own press to know about the break up stories – they were leading all the news items that day. All she needs to do is watch CNN!

I don’t really know what to make of this interview. She is very good at interviews. She can give soundbites without really disclosing anything. How often do we hear her say Brad has made her a better person or that motherhood is the best thing she’s ever done etc. She’s a master at deflecting questions.

  58. Camille says:

    Gorgeous woman, great interview.

I’ll be seeing this film eventually, it sounds like a fun trip. I also love that she is playing a strong, tough character, love it.

The film may be getting so-so reviews, but good to read that most critics consider her great in the part, that is more than can be said for certain other actresses, who take any crap film role that they get offered and then proceed to just plod their way through the movie without at least putting some effort or spark into the part.

  59. Buddha DeCat says:

Inception is a totally different movie and can’t be compared to Salt — Salt should be compared to the latest James Bond mess (Solitude of Silence or some such stupidity) and it is way, way better than that.
Also, as I’ve said in other threads — Inception is overrated — a big screen video game with losts of cool visuals and no emotional attachment to the characters. I can’t believe all the praise it is getting because the plot is downright stupid.

  60. realist says:

She NEVER HAD A PUBLICIST even when she had Maddox. She didn’t give a crap what people thought about her. I think she has one now with Brad.

It’s funny how people don’t really read something, especially when they’re just looking to bitch about the person. Weaver and Thurman etc, could kick as but only in Sci-Fi or Fantasy (Kill Bill is fantasy).

Jolie is saying there should me more movies where women can be tough in roles based in reality. Anyone with half a brain can understand that. If not read the article again.

Also there are something called Foreign Press all over the world. These are the people who take photos of her humanitarian efforts, so maybe us comfy westerners won’t spend $25 dollars on itunes this month, and give it to Doctors without Borders or the Red Cross.

To say she risks her life by going to dangerous places where the people’s lives are pure hell, full of disease and contaminated….everything…the magazines buy those pics and put them in your tabloids. You think an L.A. pap would go where she goes? And she gets right in there with the people. No fancy photo ops.

  61. the bunny lover says:

yeah we know “woman who passionately kissed brother on red carpet and used to wear billy bob’s blood and is a homewrecker.” we’re more perceptive than you think.
