Salma Hayek created and endorses a juice-only diet

Salma Hayek lost weight recently and is looking very svelte and small. Unfortunately she may have done it the hard and ultimately ineffective way. US Weekly reports that Salma helped co-create and now endorses a juice cleanse called “Cooler Cleanse.” At least this one has enough calories to sort-of live on temporarily. Here are the details from US:

“I’ve been doing juice cleanses for 15 years,” she tells Us. Now the star has teamed up with pal and professional juicer Eric Helm to create Cooler Cleanse, a three- or five-day juice detox delivery program. ($58 a day)

Detoxers consume less than 1,200 calories a day in six drinks, including almond milk and watermelon-lime. “I always lose weight,” says Hayek, who does light yoga during a detox. But the benefits go beyond slimming.

“You’ll have renewed energy,” says Helm, owner of NYC’s Juice Generation. Adds Hayek, “My skin glows when I finish day three. And it inspires me to think about what I put in my body.”

[From US Weekly, print edition, August 2, 2010]

I’ve said this many times in these fad diet stories. Studies have shown time and again that there is no magic formula to lose weight. The only way to lose weight is to burn more calories than you take in, regardless of the combination of carbs, protein, or fat you take in. (I recommend FitDay.com to track calories and determine your daily requirements. It’s free and easy to use and we have no affiliation with them. Daily calorie requirements are shown under the “Activities” tab once you fill out your basics.)

If you want to go on a juice fast to lose weight, go ahead but be careful and forewarned that it may be useless, expensive and incredibly uncomfortable if not unsafe. (There are better ways to “detox,” by simply eating more fruits and vegetables and cutting out alcohol and caffeine. Instead of going on a juice diet – why not just eat the vegetables and fruits instead of their juices and get more nutrition with more satiation and less calories?!) In our last post on this subject, on Demi and Ashton’s “Master Cleanse” diet, many of you said it worked for you and may have cleaned out your colon. Some of you included some rather nasty details. The last time that happened for me, I was prepping for a colonoscopy and it was incredibly uncomfortable. If I’m going to lose weight, I’d rather add a few more days on to the process and not feel terrible. I’m not a big fan of Salma Hayek and the fact that she created a juice diet kind of cinches it for me. It’s like she’s admitting she’s full of sh*t.

Some more celebrity diet speak. It’s a pity. I thought she had more brains than this. But apparently not.

  2. LOVE ANGELINA says:

There are similar programs like this one. Its a 3 or 5 day thing and its supposed to detox your body. You drink juices and its hella expensive. Some people swear by them. I have never done a detox. I would like to though. I think they couldn’t hurt as long as you know its mainly helping to cleanse out your body not make you skinny in 3 or 5 days. Its nothing dangerous like what the Kardasians peddle with their diet thing.

  3. fizXgirl314 says:

These bitches be crazy.. I seriously think the diet industry has driven Americans mad and given them a weight problem because of all the yoyo-ing the self loathing and the absolute trash that is dispensed as information…

I’m in Switzerland and people here don’t worry about diets… on the rare occasion do you ever see something “diet” and it’s usually something imported from the states… People manage to stay thin here just by being sensible… eating like people have always eaten for centuries… seriously, all these juice and carb free fasts do is cause people to become lunatics who end up eating anything in their site… it’s just so counterproductive and it makes me sad 🙁

  4. LisaMarie says:

FIBER…my colon cleanser of choice. Much more filling and delicious than lemonade/cayenne/maple syrup crap and much more effective. Also less rage-inducing in the long run.

  5. mojoman says:

Pfft, and you dont think she doesnt own a private chef, personal trainer and nutritionist? all she got to do is sell a gimmick. Cant believe anyone would spend $58/day for this. It’s all about portion control, work out and proper diet people!

  6. Mahoodas says:

There is nothing unusual or dangerous about a juice fast. My wife and I do them about 5-6 times a year and they are wonderful for our health and vitality.

The whole point of a juice fast is to NOT TO EAT but to only have fruit and vegetable juice and by doing that, it gives the digestive system a chance to rest and this enables the body to detox and heal itself.

It’s worth noting that eating raw fruit and vegetables requires the body to expend far more energy for digestion than if we eat cooked food – the idea is to let the body and the GIT (gastro-intestinal tract) rest for a period of days.

There’s a wonderful book called ‘Juice Fasting and Detoxification’ by Steve Meyerowitz explaining everything about how it all works. Best to read that before being judgmental about something it sounds like you know very little about.

And we think that Salma looks amazing!!

  7. Wow, Bitch says:

Really, juice only? That’s really safe. Hope you become anemic stupid bitch.

  8. Tess says:

    Cleanse. Schmenze.

She’s clinging to her svelte proportions by the bloody stumps of her fingernails while her legs are screaming “fat girl.”

  9. bite me says:

    yet she smokes

  10. LOVE ANGELINA says:

LOL Yea its what Mahoodas said. Its not like you replace eating with the juice and its just for a few days. Its like better sounding than the master cleanse thats for sure.

  11. canadianchick says:

Um pretty sure our digestive systems are supposed to be in use daily. Since Elisabeth Hasselcrack also recommends cleanses, I will definitely NOT be doing one.Salma should work on her snakephobia rather than peddle this unsafe nonsense. Sad that her daughter will be exposed to this eating disordered thinking.

  12. kiki says:

I completely agree with Mahoodas. When done properly, juice fasts are a wonderful part of a healthy lifestyle. They should not be done long term to lose weight but simply as a short-term detox. It’s really worth looking into. BTW, master cleanse is NOT a juice fast as it has very little nutritional value. I don’t know much about Salma’s particular plan so I can’t comment on it, but there is nothing disordered about choosing to do a safe, short-term detox using a variety of freshly juiced fruits and vegetables which are full of nutrients.

  13. MightyMouse says:

I notice precious few physicians supporting these diets. People who have actually studied human physiology denounce such drastic, starvation level diets. However, I will accept that there is an aesthetic, psychological benefit to temporary fasting (which is why it is prominent in many religions). But please do not go on about intestinal, or digestive, “rest” periods. There is no such thing. The gut is designed to digest food and absorb needed nutrients.

  14. autotron says:

Speaking of health, and totally off-topic, my brother went to his first AA meeting yesterday.
I am so happy I want to yell it from the roof, but mostly I just wanted to tell some non-family without consequence.

  15. MightyMouse says:

@ autotron, Congratulations to your brother! May his sobriety last. I wish you and your family the best.

Also off-topic, are you attending Al-anon?

  16. fizXgirl314 says:

yeah your digestive system doesn’t “need a rest” *eyeroll*

  17. canadianchick says:

@autotron CONGRATS to your bro. My hubby has been in AA 13 years. And fortunately they don’t promote juice cleanses there.

  18. fizXgirl314 says:

I meant to say sight, not site in my earlier post…

all these diets do is make people ravenous fiends… treating food as if it’s a drug that needs to be abstained from causes nothing but psychological and physiological problems… Americans are seriously being screwed over mentally in this regard…

  19. RHONYC says:

    well, hells bells!

how else are you gonna fit into all of those darling, couture clothes hubby brings home from the office?

    duh!

    🙂

  20. autotron says:

It’s been quite the journey, let’s just hope it’s the end of the road! Yes, Al-anon – if anyone knows any tips to keep him in there i would love you forever.

  21. Marjalane says:

Celebrities always seem to have some neurotic need to know something bigger and better than the rest of us when it comes to weight loss. The Kardashians have built an empire on it.

  22. Crash2GO2 says:

@autotron: I’m happy for you and happy for your brother! There are no tips I can give YOU for keeping him in there. That is something HE needs to do – a choice HE needs to make. It’s important for you to understand that.

    Been there, done that.

As for the digestive system needing to ‘rest’? Please. That’s like saying the heart needs to stop beating every now and then to ‘rest’.

  23. MightyMouse says:

Autotron, your brother’s sobriety is his own accomplishment. You can’t force addicts to stay in treatment. He has to want it for himself. As they say, “It works, if you work it!” Many of my family members have been involved in AA and remained sober through continued support. Encourage his sober behavior and pray. That worked for us.

  24. autotron says:

Trust me, I realize I cannot force anything, I was thinking more along the lines of the proper way to support/encourage (non-religously) someone once they have made this decision.

  25. Cirque28 says:

I used to do all-juice cleanses when I was young and stupid. Usually the last day or two would be just water. By the end of my final, memorable 2 week cleanse, I had minor hallucinations. NOT recommended!

  26. ligeia says:

eh it’s nice to see a celebrity that is honest about this shit for a change versus being all “oh teehee i never work out and i eat what want and i just do some yoga and i am just naturally thin”. sure if you’re a teenager/early 20es that might be true, but there are actresses in their mid 20es and up who still pretend they’re naturally size 0.
time to choke on my fruit and cottage cheese breakfast then haul my ass outside for a run, weee…

  27. denise says:

My brother is doing this too and he has never felt better. He lost alot of weight too.
But Salma needs to chill, because her head is looking to big on her tiny frame. I don’t think I can do a juice only diet, I love food too much.

  28. SammyHammy says:

    Autotron, that is great news!

  29. TeeTee says:

yeah, I read that Demi and Ashton are doing the lemon, maple syrup, cayenne pepper thing, she started July 11th.

I saw it on her twitter, smdh! I’d rather eat fruits and veggies and give my body a rest from digesting meat 2x a yr…fiber does it for me.

  30. Lisa says:

I bought a juicer 6 months ago. I’ve never felt better either.
I still eat other things.. mainly fruits and vegetables.. and sometimes sweets, of course.. but there’s nothing wrong with drinking real juice to lose weight. I’m starting to like this site less and less everyday.. very closed minded.
I tend to think people who eat meat everyday are full of shit. At least those of us who juice are getting rid of ours..

  31. Fae says:

I expected better of her than to endorse this sort of crap. What ever happened to eating healthily and exercising?

Let’s hope she doesn’t pass this kind of weak mindedness on to her child.

  32. k says:

She forgot to mention all of the cigarettes she smokes during the cleanse to ward off starvation. I call bs on these celebrities and their health fads + smoking.

  33. Andrea says:

    @Lisa
What kind of juicer did you buy? I really want one, but those I’ve seen that use all of the veggies/fruits (so you don’t have to cut, slice and dice) are really expensive.

  34. poiup says:

When I was using a juicer could pulp a huge amount of fruit and veges and drink what I could never finish otherwise if I tried to eat. Makes for a very intense drink but very expensive.

I don’t know about calories but if you wanted to make sure you were getting all the nutrients you need this is a great way.

  35. lena says:

@ lisa, I couldn’t agree with you more. And and FYI, diets and juicing aren’t the same thing

  36. benny says:

These “cleanse” diets are so stupid. If you want to lose a pound, you need to burn 3,500 calories more than you eat. You do the math. It is not possible to lose that much weight as quickly as these diets claim. What you are doing is dehydrating your body, which is dangerous, and which won’t last as soon as you rehydrate.

“Cleanses” are nothing more than starving the body and adding laxatives. Watermelon? Natural laxative. Cayenne pepper? Also acts as laxative by iritating your GI tract. So you are not “cleasing” – you are iritating your GI tract to cause diarrhea.

Using laxatives to lose weight has been around for a long time. Doctors will tell you it’s dangerous. But why listen to a doctor when you can take advice from a movie star? After all, they know everything about health.

  37. oduroyal says:

GREAT COMMENTARY CELEBITCHY…you’re right eating right and exercising to burn off more calories than you consume is really the only HEALTHY way to lose weight period.

  38. Ruffian9 says:

Sigh. Your digestive system does not need a “rest”. Besides, how do you think all these wonderful nutrients from your juice ‘cleanse’ are being absorbed. Hello, colan!

  39. Emily says:

$58 a DAY for JUICE? What the hell is it made out of?!

@Ruffian9, I kinda disagree, I think sometimes your digestive system CAN use a rest. But I’m talking more about just not eating as much crap and having more fruit. I’ve recently started trying to do this, and even the small improvement in my diet has made me feel better.

  40. Kelly says:

Oh Salma, now I have to hate you and I always thought you were quite cool! Mind you, my lady-crush did sort of die when I saw her screaming and climbing over someone because there was a snake in the vicinity; if you think snakes are coming to get you personally, that might explain why you think THIS shiz is ok.

And when are you wealthy enough to stop trying to pull all this tacky crap? Seriously, just go sit on one of your private islands or something and relax. The rest of us are fine.

  41. M says:

You don’t need to cleanse or detox, your body does it for you naturally, it’s one of it’s many functions. It’s really bad for you to go on any kind of stupid detox juice died.
If you want to loose weight, just eat healthily and do some exercise.

  42. Leila says:

I used to teach English in Switzerland and i have seen many many fat Swiss, and I don’t know from which planet you are coming from, Swiss people are far from being thin. \Please stop talking BS.
