Tim Gunn is a God among men. I live for bitchy, hilarious Tim Gunn interviews, and they’ve been sorely lacking in the run-up to this week’s grand return of Project Runway. What’s that? Did everyone else forget about it too? Yeah, PR comes back on Thursday at 9 pm. While I don’t think PR has gotten bad under Lifetime’s management, it does seem less like “event television” you know? Maybe it’s just the normal drop off for any show that’s entering its eighth season. But whatever, Tim Gunn is still fabulous, and his new interview with Stylelist is fantastic:
StyleList always wondered what might happen if beloved “Project Runway” mentor Tim Gunn traded places with the show’s hyper-opinionated judges for a day. Turns out, the show’s producers were curious too! Tim reveals they approached him about taking a turn in the judges’ circle for season 8, which begins July 29 on Lifetime, but he declined.
“I’m a believer in the separation of church and state,” says Gunn, who will instead speak his mind in a series of one-on-one interviews to be used in the show’s new, extended 90-minute format.
“I’ll be my candid, honest, truth-telling self,” he told reporters July 22.
Expect Liz Claiborne’s chief creative officer to spend part of those chats venting about those “crack-smoking judges.” Yes, he really called Heidi Klum, Michael Kors, and Nina Garcia that, complaining, “I’ve never witnessed a season where I felt so disabled by what the judges have decided.”
Here are more of Gunn’s insights:
He’s a fan of himself. Gunn confesses he collects DVDs of past “Project Runway” seasons and sometimes watches to reminisce. “I don’t want you to think I’m totally obsessed,” he says, “but I do enjoy reliving it.”
He’s not a fan of ’80’s fashion. The return of fashion and accessories from the ’80s is a trend that does not work for Gunn. “I didn’t particularly enjoy living through it,” he says. But if you must indulge, be subtle. “You don’t want to look too costume.”
He’s ad-dressing a personal passion. Gunn is performing fashion makeovers on five women suffering from moderate to severe psoriasis. (His sister has the painful autoimmune disorder.) “It really affects how these people present themselves to the world,” Gunn notes, adding that sufferers tend to avoid wool and dark clothing because of telltale flaking. “One of the season 8 designers also has psoriasis,” he says.
He likes to stay in touch. When former contestants give him a ring, he’s happy to meet for coffee or wine. “I don’t force myself on anyone, but I am happy to hear from them and enjoy it when they come to me for advice.” No wonder season 7 winner Seth Aaron Henderson affectionately calls him “Papa Gunn.”
He doesn’t like a know-it-all. Gunn gets impatient when contestants don’t listen to his design suggestions. This season, “there’s a designer who takes it upon his or herself to add comments to my critiques, and I admit I get frustrated by it.” He also takes umbrage when one of the designers plays “big bossy boots” on a group challenge.
He speaks his mind. In a rare moment this season, Gunn intervenes in deliberations when the judges misinterpret the intent of a design challenge. “There’s a reason I call them the crack-smoking judges,” he says. Whether they listen to Gunn is another matter.
He really does make it work. The catchphrase that helped make him a reality-TV icon originated when he was an instructor at Parsons School of Design. “I had a student who was going to throw an entire collection away, literally and metaphorically. I said, ‘You’re going to make it work!”” Now, however, “I invoke it only when necessary.”
He likes the “Odd Couple.” Gunn has his DVR set for the new Lifetime makeover show “On the Road with Austin & Santino” featuring “Project Runway” alum Austin Scarlett and Santino Rice. “It’s one of the oddest pairings I can ever imagine. It’s like Oscar Madison and Felix Unger.”

I would pay a day’s wages to see Tim Gunn look Heidi Klum and Nina Garcia in the face and tell them they were smoking crack. I honestly have tears in my eyes just thinking about how awesome that would be. But would it be awesome if Tim said it to Michael Kors? That’s the real question. Because Michael might slap Tim. And Tim might have to slap back. And then… whoops, I’m sorry, I almost turned this into homoerotic fan-fic! My bad. Even though I love Tim and all, I don’t fantasize about him getting dirty with Daniel Craig. My Gunn fantasies involve him and I going out to lunch, and then coming home to reorganize my closet, then maybe watching an old musical starring Gene Kelly.

Tim Gunn is awesome.
LOVE Tim Gunn.
Tim Gunn and Jon Stewart reported upon in the SAME DAY! How did you know it was my birthday? Best present from a blogger whom I don’t actually know- EVER!
Bravo does a much better job of marketing so that there is an anticipation and awareness of exaclty when the new show is coming out. They have more money. Also Lifetime doesn’t rerun the show enough so that if you miss it on TV you have to go online to catch the old episodes. Bravo still airs PR more than Lifetime.
Timm Gunn truly is a god among men. I love him.
Wait- the show will be 90 minutes? WTF. DVR here I come.
Nobody over the age of 20 is pleased that 80s fashion came back, as far as I can tell. The last time I wore that rubbish I was a kid and I will be damned if I’m doing it again.
ALL I want from Project Runway (yep, one thing) is a new line for Heidi instead of
‘in fashion one day you’re in, and the next you’re out’
every. single. bloody. episode.
Def. DVR is the way to go w/the 90 minutes. LOVE LOVE LOVE the GUNN.
gunn ’em, tim, gunn ’em!!!
i wish he were my gay uncle.
lol 🙂
I love Tim Gunn on PR. But i adored him on Timm Gunn’s Guide To Style! I watched it by myself with a bottle of wine and laugh & cry with him and these woman. He made them feel so good about themselves without spending too much money or being overly critical. It was beautiful and quite frankly the best reality show Bravo EVER produced!
I love Tim, but I have found the show to be lackluster for awhile now. I don’t think the concept of it can really sustain this many seasons of it. I love that Tim admits to disagreeing. I would always feel bad for contestants when they would take Tim’s advice and the judges would hate it, although I personally agree with Tim more than the judges usually.
I have loved Tim Gunn from the beginning but I just cannot watch Project Runway anymore. I just can’t!! I was going to stop before last season and missed the first three shows but was drawn into it again. I was so disappointed at how lackluster and unimagative the designers were and the winner . . . OMFG!! I literally fell on the floor. I just can’t go through that again and especially not for 90 minutes.
I also had no clue the show was beginning this Thursday. I remember back in the early days when I so looked forward to the new season, along with just about everybody else, but not anymore. Too bad!! Maybe I’ll change my mind again but I don’t think so. I’ll still love Tim forever, but I can’t suffer through PR anymore.
my bad for not caring about what tim gunn cares about.
I love Tim Gunn. That is all. :0)
I would pay sooo muuuuch mooooney to hear Tim say “big bossy boots” in person. 😀
He’s, quite possibly, the Coolest Person in America.
why can’t tim be my own personal life guru? that would be so awesome:
kate: tim, should i buy these pants?
tim: hmmmmm….they’re a bit matronly.
kate: good save, tim! hey, should i dye my hair blonde?
tim: i gotta be honest – it worries me.
kate: then brown it stays! tim, my mother is on the phone, asking about my life – what should i say?
tim: edit, edit, edit.
I was born in the last years of the 80’s so I was a child in the 90’s and grew up in the twenty first century and I HATE 80’s, 70’s 60’s fashion. I loved the trend of 2000 to 2004 and stayed that style since. 80 70 60’s are blood discusting to me. I dont get why some of my friends love it, it’s bloody depressing and just plain generic.
I mean good god shoulder pads???
Love Tim Gunn-PR is the only reality tv I’m loyal to. I love how he mother hens the designers, I was ticked last season when Emilio was so rude to him.
@Relli- YOU ARE SO RIGHT!!!!!!!!! thank you for reminding me- it was great how he made those women feel good about themselves. I wonder why that show didn’t last, oh wait. Damn bravo.
ps: @Mslewis: I totally agree last season’s designers were so uninspired and lackluster- but I kind of think that is fashion right now. I mean the rebirth of the 80’s is the best example of that, right?
Love Tim Gunn!
Especially when he would look at PR contestants clothes in the studio, have worried expression on his face for a moment and say “Make it work”.
Someone once told me about recycled fashion that “If you were old enough to wear it the first time is was popular, you’re too old to wear it the second time around.” I have found that to be so true. 80s fashion is fine (I guess) on 12yr olds. But I grew up in the 80s barely-I was born in ’79) and therefore wore that crap the first time around and recognize it for what it really is–crap. Hell, I hated 80s clothes in the 80s! Who ever thought acid wash, shoulder pads, high waisted parachute pants and hair scrunchies were a good idea the first time let alone again??
I can’t stand Klum or Garcia. Tim Gunn is the only reason I watch that show.
I was a child of the 80’s. I didn’t wear the fashions then because we couldn’t afford them. I was sad then, but now when I look at my childhood photographs I am thankful for that blessing. I remember shoulder pads, knickers and knee socks, and crazy bows and ruffles. Not a good look for anyone ever.
I’m 21, work at a retail store, and all of this 80s clothing coming back makes me want to puke.
Tim Gunn is precious. I want to carry him around in my purse and whip him out whenever I need a smart remark about something.
OMG Tim Gunn is absolutely my favorite American man. Brilliant, funny, creative, handsome, and gay and altruistic. I totally adore everything about him.
I was so disheartened when sweater girl – what was her name, Irina something or other? – won, it was so predictable, I didn’t even want to watch anymore, despite my adoration for Tim. Lifetime ruined this show, it has gotten so SOFT. Bravo seemed to give it an edge, maybe it was my imagination or maybe it’s just as the show (and Heidi) have gotten older and a little boring and older.
Tim’s about the only thing that has stayed a little acerbic, trendy. Seth Aaron even seemed a little too twee, you could just tell he was going to win, he was very artfully presented. I wish the show had wackier talent (Santino!), although not on Ping’s level.
Tim needs something better to work with.
LOVE THIS MAN
