In late May, Brittany Murphy’s widower was found dead at home under mysterious circumstances, much like the death of his famous wife five months earlier. Brittany was just 31 when she passed and Simon was 39. Both were found by Brittany’s mother Sharon, 57, who lived with the couple. Separate autopsies found that they died of the same non-drug cause: pneumonia and anemia.
My initial reaction was that the cause could have been toxic mold in the home. That’s been supported by reports that mold was rampant in the mansion following a water leak, although Brittany’s mom categorically denies that mold was the cause and claims that the home was inspected and found clean. A lot of people have unfairly speculated that Brittany’s mom may have had a hand in the deaths of her daughter and son-in-law. I think that’s ridiculous and that it’s much more logical to look for an environmental cause rather than point fingers at a grieving mom.
Whatever happened to Brittany and Simon, Simon probably helped himself to Brittany’s dwindling fortune. People Magazine reports that Brittany’s manager was astonished to find that his former client’s money was reduced by “80 percent” following her death. Monjack has a history of conning people out of money, and it came out after his death that he had two secret love children. Now Monjack’s mom is stepping in and trying to force Sharon out of the home along with making excuses for her late son’s behavior.
Six months after the 32-year-old actress’s death in December from pneumonia, anemia and multiple-drug intoxication, new allegations are surfacing about her controversial husband, the late British film producer Simon Monjack.
Murphy’s former business manager Jeffrey Morgenroth tells PEOPLE that Monjack drained his deceased wife’s cash reserves by 80 percent before his own death from anemia and pneumonia in May.
As a result, Murphy’s mom Sharon, 57, is facing financial uncertainty, says Morgenroth.
“There were huge amounts of money in [Brittany’s] pension plan and bank account, and all of that’s gone,” says Morgenroth. “I would see it on the statements. There was money being withdrawn by Simon, hundreds of thousands.”
Even in the wake of Monjack’s death, trouble followed. Jeannette Bycott, an assistant to Morgenroth, says she witnessed a scene in which Monjack’s mother Linda ordered Sharon to leave the couple’s Hollywood Hills house.
“Linda started acting like everything belongs to her,” says Bycott. “Before Sharon could say anything, Linda stated the house was now hers.”
Linda Monjack, who is grieving the loss of her son, denies any wrongdoing by either her or Simon, telling PEOPLE from her home in England, “If there is money missing I have no idea where it is.”
Adds Linda, “He didn’t get much, maybe a few hundred dollars, and he paid off his debts with it. He was spending his time crying his eyes out most of the time. He was in a terrible state…”
But for Sharon, who was extraordinarily close to her only daughter and son-in-law, such allegations [of Monjack controlling Murphy] are still hard to believe, says Morgenroth.
“She’ll say, ‘I can’t talk about that now,’ ” says Morgenroth. “I’m trying to get her to understand that the bank account has this amount. She was looking at the pension statement and I said, ‘Look. There are almost no zeros there.’ She needs guidance on how to deal with things.”

This whole story is just sad and it’s not surprising that Monjack’s mom is as much a con artist as her son. I do think that Monjack was a sort-of controlling Svengali intent on getting his hands on Brittany’s money, but that doesn’t mean he didn’t love her, as stupid as it sounds to say that. Love doesn’t excuse his wasting all her money and leaving nothing for the mom. Also, if these two were poisoned by mold and eventually killed by it (and I will admit that’s a huge leap on my part and may not be the case), it would explain a lot of their very eccentric behavior in the months preceding their deaths. Mold that makes you that sick can also make you confused and crazy, and I know because I was poisoned by it for months in an apartment I once lived in. It wouldn’t lead you to steal money though of course.
Is it really necessary to point fingers now that both he and Murphy are dead?
this is a sad story. Brittany had a great talent, and i’m sorry to see her go. as well as from comments of former cast mates and such-they all loved her.
Simon on the other hand-meh. i try not to speak ill of the dead but he still screams scumbag. and his mother throwing Britt’s mother out? I believe Brittany left the house and everything else to her mother. how does Monjack even begin to believe she has that right?
It wouldn’t surprise me, he wasn’t much good. But it’s too late to be pointing fingers.
I lived in an apartment full of mold too, and ended up with COPD. I would also not be surprised if that had something to do with their deaths.
I wonder why her mom was depending on her for her well-being — that is too much pressure for a child to handle. Parents get your own darn jobs and stop mooching off your celebrity kids. Sounds like Britney’s mom needs a good kick in the butt along with Simon’s mom. It is great when a child makes it big and wants to show their parent(s) how much they appreciate them by buying them a house or whatever but a parent shouldn’t be relying soley on a child for their well-being – that is all kinds of messed up.
drug abuse could account for their eccentric behavior before their deaths too.
The whole thing is so dysfunctional – Brittany’s mom, the whole deal.
And that last picture is WAAAAY creepy – with the false eyelashes and the eyeballs – it’s somehow Muppet-esque.
@meme – true! I should have mentioned that.
@Syko – I hope you’re out of that house/apartment now and that your health is improving. I’m so sorry you suffered like that.
CB why do you keep saying non-drug cause when reports clearly state death from pneumonia, anemia and multiple-drug intoxication? There are strong links between drug abuse and pneumonia so even if she didn’t die from a drug overdose; the drug use could have caused the pneumonia that led to her death. Her behavior was very off on multiple occasions before her death, there were tons of prescriptions in the home, and I think drugs played a part in her death.
Also, all mold isn’t toxic. I have mold in my shower when it needs cleaning…aka mildew. There are also lots of other types of mold that are not a danger to a person’s health. Black mold is a toxic mold but I have not seen any report that states there was/is black mold in the home.
I guess it doesn’t really matter what she or her husband died of but it seems ridiculous to go out of the way to find non-drug related reasons for their deaths. I don’t think we will ever really know what went on in that home.
the idea that mold had a part to play in their deaths is seeming more and more likely to me, but what do i know?
i do know that they were both abusing pain killers, including vicodin/hydrocodone, which can inhibit one’s ability to cough (much like dextromethorphan aka DXM). if there was mold in their house, and they were inhaling it a little every day, they might have been too high to be able to cough up any moisture or debris on their lungs.
the situation is entirely terrible, and brittany murphy was a great actress and entertainer. i think the moral of the story is to stay away from the M’s: mold and the monjacks.
First, let me say how bad I feel for her mother. She honestly seems like a decent person. But I am not too sure about Simon. He looks sort of Greasy Bearish, to me. In many of the pictures I’ve seen of them they both look as if they are under the influence of drugs. And I don’t mean “hey, I have a prescription for this and I’m using it the way I shoudl be using it.” I mean they both looked sick. He is always a white, sweaty mess and she..well..she doesn’t look healthy, either. As for the missing money, it would not surprise me at all if he did not give it to his own mother.
omg they did not die of mold poisoning. They died because of abusing drugs. please
Didn’t Brittany leave most (or all) of her estate to her mother? Sounds like Simon left Sharon nearly pennyless.
Also, I think not all mold is toxic but you sure better get outta there if you’re around toxic mold. The word “toxic” is meant literally & is a warning for you. Hidden mold in homes is always bad/toxic (I think).
I’m with @electric.
Simon was probably pilfering money from day one.
I feel so sorry for Sharon Murphy. I did not think her behavior was weird following Brittney’s death. But really Brittney’s marriage was so weird. Brittney always was so close to her mother. The whole thing is so disturbing, isn’t it?
By every account I’ve read, this guy was a total parasite and leech. Jaime Pressly said after Brittany’s death that they used to be close friends, but not since Monjack came along. He was a manipulative dirtbag. She deserved much better.
And unless Brittany’s mom was ill or rather old, she shouldn’t have been mooching off her daughter, either, in my opinion.
They did not die from mold and anybody who thinks they did has fallen victim to the PR monster… It. Was drugs people… I like murphy but its no reason for denial
thanks good for topic
I visited a lot of website but I believe this one has got something special in it.
