Katie Holmes finally makes a great career move

Last summer, Katie Holmes ran far away from Xenu and went to Australia to film a creepy horror film called Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark. It was intended to be the definitive take on “Life With Xenu: The Darkness Descends”. No, I jest. It’s a remake of a somewhat forgotten 1970s horror film that is getting a totally new, creepy, terrifying reboot by writer/director Guillermo del Toro. Originally, del Toro was supposed to direct the film, but he ended up just writing the screenplay and producing, while director Troy Nixey helmed the project. Even this attachment of del Toro’s name to the project is enough to send the fanboys into geek heaven, though. Fanboys love del Toro’s work, and from the few films I’ve seen of his oeuvre, he is one of the most imaginative writer/director/producerss working today. My favorite of his was Pan’s Labyrinth, a beautiful, creepy, sad, lush film that was part fairy tale and part nightmare. Anyway, here’s the trailer:

Apparently, del Toro and Nixey were aiming for a PG-13 rating, but when they submitted the film to the MPAA, it got an R rating. Del Toro told the crowd at Comic-Con: “We originally thought we could shoot it as PG-13 without compromising the scares. And then the MPAA came back and gave us a badge of honor. They gave us an R for ‘pervasive scariness.’ We asked them if there’s anything we could do, and they said, ‘Why ruin a perfectly scary movie?’” The basic plot: Guy Pierce (yay!) is the father to a young girl. Dad, the girl, and dad’s girlfriend Katie Holmes move into a creepy old mansion. The girl finds a secret basement, which is full of horrors and creepy things. LIKE XENU.

Seriously, though. I think this was a great career move for Katie. One her better choices. She does “haunted” very well. Coughcoughallthetimecough.

She already made the ultimate career move, she married Cruise, didnt’ she?

    Suddenly, she’s interesting.

  6. Hautie says:

Funny enough my favorite Nicole Kidman movie, during her time with The Cruise, was “The Others”. Which I found creepy as hell to watch. But I loved it.

Ohhh and Katie Holmes did “The Gift”. Which is a great movie. Where she was the evil southern bell. Worth watching! So she has done good movies. The whole Cruise thing has really tainted her career.

  7. RHONYC says:

  15. Relli says:

  16. ksmit says:

this looks sooo good, but i hate it when they show the monsters! your own imagination is scarier than anything cgi can create.

  17. albeli says:

    Great career move=Divorcing TC

  18. Anon says:

The Orphanage and Pan’s Labyrinth are two of my absolutely favourite movies of all time, and I generally hate watching movies where I have to follow along through subtitles. They are just THAT good.

  19. Tabbyfoof says:

I think his last name is spelled “Pearce.”

  20. lena says:

I love Del Toro, he’s made some beautiful/scary/creepy movies

Everyone should check The Orphanage/ El Orfanato…it’s really really good

  21. lena says:

Anon, try The Devil’s Backbone, another Del Toro movie, if you haven’t seen that one…really good…I’m a fan of his films

  22. H says:

I was covering my eyes watching the trailer. Def want to see this one.

  23. Tiffany says:

    albeli,

She will never divorce Cruise until her contract money clears and she can continue to spend money like its her’s. You think she is going to go from a ‘cozy’ apartment in NYC to the mansions that she have in California and Colorado. Come on now.

  24. GatsbyGal says:

The Hellboy movies were also completely amazing. Even if you don’t care that it’s based off of a comic, it’s still an incredible story and the creature effects are out of this world. Del Toro is truly a genius and anything that he touches is platinum.

And that preview? Holy crap, it looks SO scary!

  25. bellaluna says:

LOVE Pan’s Labyrinth. I’ve seen it many, many times, and I still watch it whenever it’s on.

Can’t watch the preview right now, but I’ll come back to it.

Guy = YUM! (But too short for me, unfortunately) 🙁

  26. She-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named says:

thanks for the link Lena, spooky as hell.

The Orphanage scared the poop out of me and I still think about it. It was truly disturbing, but excellent.

I loved the Others, too, Kidman was great in that.

  27. Siren6 says:

OK that was horrifying! I jumped a foot straight up!

  28. Patrice says:

I agree wholeheartedly about “Pan’s Labyrinth”!!! (that movie was so phenominal that I hardly noticed the whole thing was subtitled). Hopefully this one will be even half as good.
I actually think Katie does the horror genre pretty well too. I really enjoyed her in “The Gift” with Cate Blanchett and even that other film about the posessed teenagers she was in way back. Good for her : )

  29. Dingles says:

del Toro and Mrs. Tom Cruise attached to the same project…my brain, it hurts. However, since I am a “fangirl” of del Toro’s I will definitely be seeing this. “The Orphanage” is one of the creepiest, most beautiful movies I’ve ever seen. del Toro can do no wrong in my eyes.

  30. apsutter says:

I cant stand her stupid ass but del toro is amazing!! He makes the most interesting and wonderful films. The orphanage was so creepy but had such a sweet ending for a horror film. He needs to keep it up and keep making great movies

  31. Maddie says:

Has anyone seem the original movie, it was made in the 70’s and scared the crap out of me when I watched it…. I do hope this is a good remake.

  32. fashionfreak says:

is she wearing a lace front wig in that last picture? let me find out she’s really bald.

  33. hatsumomo says:

I thought the Orphanage was so sad and heartbreaking. I know it was meant to be a horror film, but it was pretty sad all the way through.
