Emma Watson chopped off her hair because she wants to play Lisbeth Salander

emma

Last week, Emma Watson abruptly chopped off her longish hair. She posted the above photo on her Facebook page, and mentioned something about how she “fancied a change” and that’s why the dramatically shorter locks. But, according to British sources, Emma chopped off her hair because she wanted to prove to director David Fincher that she was hardcore enough to transform herself for the part of a lifetime: Lisbeth Salander in The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. OK UK’s source says: “Emma has auditioned with director David Fincher and cut her hair to look the part. The character of Lisbeth is a misfit with spikey hair.”

Honestly, it takes more than a haircut to prove that you’re hardcore enough to play Lisbeth, but since my instant reaction to this gossip wasn’t absolute revulsion, let’s examine the idea of Emma getting the part, shall we?

A few days ago Emma Watson got a pixie cut, an event that hardly qualified as newsworthy even by our abysmally low standards. But, as it turns out, there really is a story behind the new ‘do. Apparently Ms. Watson is gunning for the lead role of Lisbeth Salander in Stieg Larsson’s Millenium trilogy. The books have sold umpty-million copies worldwide, and a Swedish film version was released last year. But, since Hollywood devoutly believes that Americans fear subtitles as much as they love 3D (wrong on both counts, Hollywood honchos), a big-budget American remake is in the works. This is a big deal. The Lisbeth Salander role is probably the hottest female role out there right now, and whoever gets it is virtually guaranteed a three-picture deal in what promises to be a phenomenally profitable franchise, starting with The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Daniel Craig has signed to play Miikael Blomkvist, the leading male role, which all but guarantees some serious box office action.

Emma has already auditioned with director David Fincher—a name that provides yet another indication that this project is kind of a big deal. Considering that her competition is Natalie Portman (too old), Ellen Page (too cute), Kristen Stewart (can’t act), and Carey Mulligan (a bit of a wild card), Emma might actually have a shot. If she does get the role, it will definitively kill her wholesome Hermione Granger image. As OK Magazine notes in the link above: “Throughout the films, Lisbeth is involved in some racy scenes with both men and women, including a graphic and violet [sic] bedroom scene.” We know how Emma looks with short hair, and we might yet find out how she looks in purple.

[From Agent Bedhead]

Graphic and violent? Uh, yeah. But Lisbeth isn’t a victim. Never. While I think very highly of little Emma, I am unsure that she would be able to pull off the character of Lisbeth without falling into The Girlish Trap. You know what that is. The trap that so many actresses fall into, the trap of not wanting to be emasculating, of always wanting to be sympathetic, or always wanting the audience to like you. Lisbeth is not sympathetic, at least not in an conventional sense. She’s someone to be feared and admired and held at a distance. She’s dangerous and brilliant and fascinating and not girlish at all. And when I see Emma, I just want to give her a hug. Just because she’s so cute.

But on that one note, about Emma’s beauty: that’s the one thing that would actually make me think Emma’s got a good shot. I think she’s cute and pretty, but she tends to have a kind of non-descript prettiness that could very easily be “average” or “meh”. Lisbeth needs that. She doesn’t need a beauty queen playing the part. Plus, Emma does still look kind of like a kid – which Lisbeth does too. I don’t know… thoughts?

    Hermione playing Lisbeth?
    Never!

  2. girl says:

That black lace and leather dress thing is horrible. Other than that I think she looks great.

  3. Kimberly says:

I am kicking myself for not having read this book yet , the buzz about who will be cast in this movie is insane .

I need to read this book a.s.a.p.

  4. denise says:

She resembles Mia Farrow in Rosemary’s Baby, with that haircut.

  5. freckles says:

Omg… she looks gorgeous with short hair! Love her 🙂

As for her playing Lisbeth, I generally don’t read books more recent than the 19th century so I have no idea what that book is even about 🙂

  6. Kaiser says:

Yes, everyone should read the books! They are incredible. I’m a big fan of thriller/suspense/crime genre, and the Millennium trilogy is one of the best ever. And Lisbeth Salander is one of the most unique and finely-drawn heroines of the past century.

  7. denise says:

I’m predicting a Twilight manic response to this movie.

  8. big Kitty Kat says:

Ellen Page is “too cute” for the role? Ever see her in the movie, Hard Candy? She was great in that role. Didn’t know much about her at the time but in retrospect her career choices have been interesting. I’ve recently seen the swedish version (not read the books) and I could definitely see Ellen doing well. Emma Watson would be, hmmm… interesting as well.

  9. Solveig says:

I think she’s cute and I can’t judge her acting skills because I have never seen her in a movie, then maybe I’m having a bias on her, but I think that Lisbeth is a tough character that requires more than a cute pixie haircut and ambition to be performed in a good way.
And she’s too young and too fresh faced to play Lisbeth. Noomi Rapace was the best choice and I think that nobody can make a better performance than hers.

  10. Livia says:

I KNEW IT!!!! Ha, I totally fucking knew it. And, I think she has a great chance of getting the part.

  11. Really says:

Kaiser- You talk about this book so much I read it last week. THANKS! AWESOME!

I am liking Natalie Portman as Lisbeth, because I think she can do the darkness well.

  12. Jasmin says:

I think physically she’s a good match to Lisbeth- petite body, angly face.

My main concern is that Emma Watson….. isn’t really a great actress. I don’t know if she could actually act the part.

  13. lena says:

was the original movie any good?

  14. Stephie says:

I’d worry I’d always see her as ‘Hermione’ no matter who she plays. But I also have that problem with a few other actors who only played one major, long running role.

I have to read these books! Sad thing is, I have them, just haven’t gotten to them yet.

  15. eja102 says:

hmm, you know, I kind of like her as Lisbeth.

Ellen Page has totally the wrong look, she looks slothy, not lithe. if kristen stewart works again it will be too soon, and who was the other one? exactly.

can we picture daniel and emma kissing?

  16. Cam says:

I agree with @big Kitty Kat.
God, now I want to read the book.

Anyway, as a big Harry Potter fan… Emma will always be my Hermione.

  17. buckley says:

I never thought of that….Daniel and Emma kissing.
I simply cannot see it. Then again I’m not pleased with Daniel as Blomkvist.

  18. locagirl says:

I think she could do it!

  19. Melissa says:

If you haven’t seen the movies in Swedish, you should. At least the first is available to rent. They were great and honestly I’m not sure an American version can leave up to the nitty gritty rawness… As for Emma playing Slanadar… I can kind of see it.

  20. Sophie says:

Well, apart from Ellen Page, I think Emma is the only one I’d be happy with. I really do think they need to get an unknown though, I think it would work better.

@lena, the original movie was ok. Noomi Rapace (who played Lisbeth) was excellent, but I didn’t really think it was that great of an adaptation. The first book is a really intriguing mystery and I felt they didn’t really capture that, so I’m looking forward to seeing what David Fincher will do with it. I think it all depends on who they get to play Lisbeth, and I think an unknown actress would be the best way to go.

  21. Solveig says:

@lena, yes, I find it good and quite true to the novel, although it is not as disturbing as the book is. Noomi Rapace (Lisbeth) is breathtakingly good.

  22. bros says:

no one can come close to the chick they found for the swedish movies. they should stick with her. she was fantastic. i bet she speaks perfect english too, and everyone else has an accent in the movie, so why not her. lisbeth cant be a familiar face. I hope the casting director gets that. has to be an unknown.

  23. Beth says:

@Lena The original movie was great! And it was in Swedish, which is something that one should expect from a movie that takes place in Sweden.

That being said, I think Emma Watson could pull off the looks of Lisbeth. I’ve never seen a Harry Potter movie, though, so I don’t know if she can act.

The danger with these mainstream actresses playing Lisbeth is that they might just make her seem really emo. Lisbeth isn’t emo. She’s completely paranoid and untrusting, and for good reasons. She will fuck a bitch up. Can Hermione do that?

  24. LondonLady says:

er, daniel craig has to bed this beauty whomever she might end up being- they have to pick someone vulnerable yet mature. Its not the recent school leaver, thats for sure

  25. Bullett says:

I can’t even remotely imagine Emma channeling the raw, open-wound quality of this character. Makes no sense at all. And a new hairstyle won’t change that….

  26. meme says:

Ralph Fiennes should be Blomkvist and they should beg Noomi to reprise the role because she was PERFECT as Lisbeth. No way can I see Emma doing the scene where Lisbeth gets revenge on her guardian. NEVER KIRSTEN STEWART. NEVER NEVER NEVER. She of two expressions – mouth open, mouth closed. They should go with an unknown if they can’t get Noomi.

  27. Kate says:

Despite the fact that she is really cutsy, I am starting to love the idea of her for Lisbeth…I’d like to see her or Emily Browning. Def not Portman or Paige…

  28. Bodhi says:

I think Noomi Rapace has come out & said that she doesn’t want to be in a Hollywood version, which is a damn shame b/c she was AMAZING. As for Emma… um, I’m gonna have to think about that one…

I’m with Kaiser, everyone should read the books!!

  29. buckley says:

I was thinking Ewan McGregor as Blomkvist.
Just something about Craig is too physical…

  30. meme says:

@Bodhi – I agree that Hollyweird shouldn’t even be remaking this movie. You know they’ll mess it up and the Swedish film was excellent.

  31. TQB says:

I haven’t seen any but the first Potter movie, so I guess I have a different image of Watson. To me, she seems quite intelligent, fascinating and potentially dangerous in a fearless sort of way. Really, this part is what she needs if she ever wants to be remembered for anything other than Hermione. She’s got the motivation to pull it off and I tend to believe she has the talent, too.

  32. Bodhi says:

@meme – I’m so bummed that Hollywood got its greedy claws on it 🙁 But I can’t help but follow every single casting rumor. I gotta be prepared for how much its gonna be scewed up, ya know?

But David Fincher is a great director & hopefully he can keep the movie true to the idea

  33. Cath says:

She is waaaaay too cute. The only person (besides the girl who played the part in the Swedish originals) that I can think of as rocking the Salander is Keira Knightley.

  34. SolitaryAngel says:

I think it would be great to see Emmie spread her wings and do something daring like this–DanRad did it with Equus. Also, Emma isn’t “over-saturated” in the market like KStew is (and frankly, she can’t act either so she should be out).

I also plan to get those books today!! Go Emma girl—you can do it!

  35. Iggles says:

Haven’t read the book yet. But as long as neither Carey Mulligan or Kristen Stewart are cast, I’d be happy 🙂

  36. e says:

I cannot see her in this part. She has sex with Daniel Craig’s character. I can see Robin getting down with him but Emma? It is just too weird. And every time I think of how she plays “pissed off” I think of her in Harry Potter. I mean she is a good actress and could pull of the look of Lisbeth but I just don’t see her pulling off the attitude.

  37. gabs says:

She does look like mia farrow. Honestly i think this is a silly rumor. Isnt she going to college right now?? How would she film it? idk. I think the haircut is a coincidence

  38. Emi says:

ahaha “Kristen Stewart (can’t act)” aahahahahahah, amazing!

  39. Bec says:

I haven’t read the book, but if you have Netflix, you can watch the movie. The most6 amazing film I’ve seen in years. Years!

There are no known American actresses who can play this part.

  40. Steh says:

the swedish movie adaptions are awesome! I think even the idea of an american remake is ridiculous. It’s a money grab catering to the people who are too lazy to read subtitles. I think the director should do himself a favour and cast a newcomer. Someone no one has ever heard of before.

  41. meme says:

@Bodhi – If they HAVE to remake the film, Fincher is the director to do it but I fear they are going to Hollywoodize the trilogy and muck it up. I like Robin Wright as Erika Berger though.

  42. Feebee says:

Haven’t seen Potter movies but I wish people wouldn’t say Hermione can’t play Lisbeth. She a little young to typecast just yet. I say unless another actress comes in and blows the director away, Emma looks good for front runner (Kaiser summed up others nicely). Let’s see what she’s got. She’s going to have to go to a really dark place. Naaomi Rapace (sp?) was brillant in the original.

I haven’t read the book but as it’s apparently much better so will go back and read because I enjoyed the movie. I’m ok with Daniel Craig as Blomkvist because as an actor he’s pretty superb and once in character I think a few nay-sayers will come round (bit like Bond really).

I’m halfway thru reading Girl who Played with Fire and looking forward to seeing movie that’s just being released now.

Somebody mentioned Twilight-like reaction to this movie – what a shame to sully it like that. If it’s done correctly this movie won’t be for teenagers. Come to think about it maybe not for their mums either.

  43. CD says:

“Lisbeth isn’t a victim. She’s dangerous and brilliant and fascinating and not girlish at all.”

You just described Angelina Jolie. Too bad she’s too old to play the part.

  44. texasmom says:

I like Ellen Page for that role, I think she could pull off the disassociative scariness of Lizbeth. Maybe Emma could too, I don’t know with all these young actresses, they may have more in there than we suspect.

I LOOOOOOOVE these books and liked the first Swedish film that came out — great atmosphere, but the actors didn’t quite match what I had in my head.

  45. meme says:

I’m so glad St. Angie is too old to play Lisbeth. She’s a crap actress.

  46. Bina says:

I’d really like to see Sarah Bolger in this role. She was so good in the Tudors as Princess Mary that I think she could carry off the simultaneous hardness and vulnerability very well. I wish Tom Twyker would direct the movies; and I’d almost like to see a European actor in the role of Blomkvist, maybe Vincent Perez, or Viggo Mortensen.

  47. mslewis says:

You just described Angelina Jolie. Too bad she’s too old to play the part.
    —————————————————–
I was thinking the same thing. A young Angelina would have been amazing in this role.

I think Emma might be good. She doesn’t look the part in that photo but it would be easy to darken her hair, spike it and stick those nose rings in and her look would totally change. Plus, I think she’s a good actress. I’ve never seen the Potter movies but I have seen Emma in a couple of small movies that she did when she was much younger.

I hear that Carey Mulligan has already been rejected and is out of the running. Natalie Portman was never in the running since she is way too old and worn. I would not be at all surprised if someone nobody has heard of wins the part. And, has anybody noticed that the “American version” has no Americans in it, so far? Funny, that.

  48. OC lady says:

I think Jolie would’ve been good b/c she has the dark and violent thing down pat. She played a similar role in Hackers. But if we’re going by the book, Jolie is all wrong for the role. Lisbeth is young, very short (5″1) and has limited sex appeal. The book described her as small-chested actually. Angelina has too much sex appeal for the character.

Honestly, I have no idea which Hollywood actress would work for the role. Natalie Portman, Ellen Page, Carey and Emma are all too cute for the role. I can’t see them getting dirty and violent at all. And, I’m not sure about their acting abilities. I think Portman is the best actress of the bunch but it still might be too unbelieveable to cast her in something so dark. Maybe, Gemma Atherton might be decent, or Evan Rachel Wood, possibly?

I thought the original Swedish film was good. The best part of it was Noomi Rapace. It’s too bad she won’t reprise the role because she nailed it. I have a feeling they wouldn’t cast her anyways, because she’s unknown. Oh well, I’m still holding out hope the movie might turn out good even though it will be the “Hollywood” version of the book.

  49. Beth says:

There are too many people commenting on this who haven’t read the books. Seriously, if you haven’t read the books, you really shouldn’t be commenting on Lisbeth Salander.

  50. Cheyenne says:

Jolie would be great in that role if she was ten years younger and five inches shorter. I don’t see Watson or anybody else in that role if they go ahead with a remake, and I think they should scrap the whole idea of a remake. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

  51. buckley says:

    Bina:

I’ve been thinking Sarah Bolger for a while. Thought I was the only one. She’s a brilliant actress.

  52. lucy2 says:

I keep picturing Ellen Page, and I agree with #8, her role in Hard Candy makes me think she can handle it well. Emma seems too delicate.

Honestly, I just finished the first book, and maybe my expectations were too high, but I wasn’t blown away. It was good, and Lisbeth is a great character, but I just wasn’t as amazed by it as so many people seem to be.
I would like to see the original Swedish film though, and I will read the other 2 books eventually.

  53. buckley says:

Book#2 is impossible to put down!

  54. rudy5 says:

    no!

  55. meme says:

@mslewis – carey mulligan was not ‘rejected’ — she said she was scared to play the part which is probably a good move since whoever plays Lisbeth will be compared to Noomi’s and she was perfect.

@beth – seriously. no read book, no comment.

  56. MSat says:

Out of all the Harry Potter kids, Emma is the only one that I thought, from day one, had some decent acting chops. I think she’d be great for this role, and I see a long, diverse career ahead of her. She’s smart, lovely and I think we’ve only seen a small sample of what she can do with a role. Anyone who thinks she’s not a good little actress needs to re-watch “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.”

  57. buckley says:

Being a good little actress simply isn’t enough for this role.
She doesn’t appear to have the gravitas needed and her looks are too wholesome.

  58. Luki says:

I think Katherine Moennig Would make a great lisbeth..

  59. oduroyal says:

This was ballsy of Emma, good for her! I hope she gets the part.

  60. buckley says:

Whoa Luki, just today I thought of Moennig.
She certainly has the look down.

  61. snowball says:

Gritty Emma up a bit and she’d be okay. She just looks too happy; I don’t know if she can pull it off, truthfully. The thought of her with Daniel – he can do it. Can she?

I’d have liked Keira for the role, actually, but she’s on the snotty side. She’d need to work on that.

Oh, god. Angelina? Never. In a million years, never. She’s bigger than the part, she’d stomp her way through the movie.

  62. buckley says:

I also thought Anna Kendrick might be good…

  63. RobN says:

Katherine Moennig turns 33 this year. Way too old for the part. I’m fine with Emma Watson, but I can barely look at Daniel Craig. I can’t believe the article actually said he guarantees box office; maybe as Bond, but not as anything else. He’s not aging well.

  64. lola says:

Emma watson’s reps have denied the rumor now, on gossip cop. Plus this story comes fron the sun!!!! not the more reliable source. The past summer they were the first to report the news that emma wanted to work with marylin manson… which was made up, of course. She starts a new year in brown in fall when the filming will begin so major schedules conflicts here. And she already says she cuts her hair because she wanted to since years, not for an acting job, otherwise I think she wanted to be more quiet about it until to know if she got the role. And for the moment the four actresses in the running are unkowns, and the rumors about natalie, kristen and carey are already killed, so it’s old news. Natalie even says that she was never attached or called for the audition, so the story about emma is also probably made up just because of her haircut which made a little buzz on internet and the sun wanted to use it! And the casting of lisbeth is a hot commodity in hollywoood right now, so people just want to create more buzz. Since months all young actresses have been linked, emma’s name was never mentionned and now it’s seems a little late.

  65. Luki says:

She might be 33, but she can totally pass for younger.

  66. Newyorking says:

I think she would do well. We have yet to see her acting prowess outside of Harry Potter, but somehow I think she would do well. She is a tad too pretty though for the role.

  67. Nenasiek says:

i really wish they wouldnt do a hoolywood version, Noomi gave a great performance and no one will be able to do it better,
and as some already pointed out the movie(s)wont be the same becuse theres no way they will shoot some of the scenes from the swedish version, wicht are sort of important to show how lisbet is as a person(how she deals with everything). and wihtout them the whole thing is not as raw and “real”.

also swedish movies and actors just have a completly different style than hollywood

  68. Play-Doh says:

If only this was filming two or three years from now – the perfect choice would be Chloe Morezt!

Failing that, what about Kristen Bell? She’s been in rom-com hell for the last couple of years, but she’s proven she can play tough and young as “Veronica Mars.”

How about Summer Glau? She’s shown that she can be a 98lb Terminator – and she’s not as yet overexposed…

  69. Amanda says:

The Swedish movies already released– The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (rent it) and The Girl who Played with Fire (see it in the theater now)– are awesome! The actress who plays Lisbeth is PERFECTLY cast for the role (I think her name is Noomi Rapace??) and honestly I cannot imagine Emma Watson or Ellen Page playing her. Emma Watson is too girlish, young, and naive (or she seems that way, to me). Ellen Page is just too … Ellen Page-ish. I don’t know why the movie has to be remade for America. 🙁 $$$ I guess.

  70. KateNonymous says:

I don’t see Emma as Lizbeth, but I guess it’s not impossible. But, please, not Keira Knightley. She’s a terrible actress, and I don’t know why she gets so much work.

  71. Anj says:

    This is HILARIOUS.

    emma as lisabeth??????

    hahaaaaaaahaaaaaaaaaaaaahaaaaaahahahahaha
    hahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
    ahahahhahhhhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa……..}

  72. Shy says:

I love Harry Potter and every kid from there… But please… Emma can’t act. She can’t even act Hermione properly. I don’t believe that she will have any movie career after. Most of the Potter kids have started in many other films during shootings. Emma didn’t start anywhere.

And am I the only one who finds beyond ridiculous all this madness around this Lisbeth Salander and The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo? It’s like some casting for Anakin Skywalker or Spiderman. And every site runs “Who will play the great Lisbeth” stories every day.

May i say from all the general public: “Who cares?” Who will watch this movie? What box-office money will it have? None. I looked the trailer to swedish film and it left me cold with zero desire to go and watch this movie. It may be some “critics beloved movie” but no one will care. It looks like another suspense thriller. There are hundreds of them out there. And why there is such craziness around it i don’t understand. What trilogy? How much do they plan to spent on production? And how much do they plan to receive? Who will watch it? Daniel Craig didn’t had any box-office success outside Bond movies. And then they will cast some newcomer…

I just can’t understand that crazy hype around this movie.

  73. Conando says:

Remaking this series sounds stupid beyond belief. No one but Noomi can play Lisbeth, she embodied Lisbeth so fully that anyone else will look like a joke.

  74. nel says:

awww i love emma and think she is totally cute with that haircut, but i dont think she is lisbeth.

girl with a dragon tattoo was an amazing movie and i found myself cheering for her when she exacted revenge on her creep head guardian! ohhh i was like screaming YESSSS! on the inside.

but yeah, i dont think emma can play that role, but hay i could be wrong.

and if emma plays that role, hollywood would probably tone it down because the swedish? version is pretty full nudity and graphical.

and i just cant see emma doing graphic scenes, just eeekky for me.. nooo thanks

  75. aenflex says:

Kasier I agree with your wondering how Emma will do dropping the femme. That’s always so hit or miss. I honestly believe she can do it though, and I cannot wait to see the film. I really think she’s got it.

  76. Tazina says:

Interesting to see some of the choices. Jolie? Way too old and much too tall. This role requires a short actress. Salander is 4 ft. 11 inches and 90 pounds. Must be someone edgy and tough too. I didn’t see the Swedish version but seems like that actress was great in the role. Can’t see Ellen Page or Keira Knightly in the role….don’t think Emma Watson is tough enough but then again she hasn’t had a role to demonstrate that she could be.

  77. nel says:

apart from all this, why dont they just keep the movie as it is.
    sigh…
    its only subtitles.
seriously, hollywood will have a VERY HIGH bar to meet.
and please dont tell me they will cast some starlet as lisbeth OMG
can you just imagine what the execs are thinking now?
hmm lets have scarlet johanson or what about blake lively ..yeah yeah.. or natalie portman…
seriously, hollywood is going to find it hard to find any raw actresses like Noomi Rapace out there.
its because hollywood has shot itself in the foot by only having starlets who are ohhh soo pretty and sometimes remotely talented.
i mean hollywood thinks kristen stewart is “edgy” thats how vanilla hollywood is.
plus remember denise richards as a nuclear physicist? omg the cochroach under my house would have been more convincing.
i agree, ellen page cant play lisbeth, her cheeks are too round and she looks too cute for it.
keira cant either, she tried to make it work as domino but not hardcore enough.
they should just leave it alone, they are going to ruin a perfectly great movie.
and this movie is realllly graphical and some scenes were really confronting for me but its that kind of a movie.
and vanilla hollywood, will just tone it down so much, it will be Girl with a Gragon Tattoo who wears burberry and louis vuitton, who solves crime while juggling relationship & love, her boss who is sexist and doesnt understand her, her mother is wondering why she isnt married yet because she has investment bankers, lawyers, doctors chasing after her.
and will she fall inlove for the poor waiter boy or will she go for the rich guy? ohhh i dont know..
seriously… they are gonna f’up this movie.

i agree that noomi rapace cannot be outdone. none of the actresses named so far would meet her standard by a longshot, but ellen page would definitely be the WORST choice of them all. she doesn’t know how to use her voice and she is a very self-conscious and immature actor, reminds me of amy adams, who, every moment she’s onscreen it’s like nails on a blackboard to me. actually i think kristen stewart would be the best given the names i’ve seen proposed, because she has a true introverted intensity. but… really, why mess with perfection??? whoever called this project a money grab was right on.

I don’t know… I’d prefer an unknown actress for the Liesbeth Salander role. Emma looks the part a little bit, but I doubt that she can give Liesbeth the depth that she needs.
I kinda abhorr the thought of Natalie Portman doing it also…she rubs me the wrong way somehow.

Okay, no one is seriously proffering Angelina Jolie for the role, but what some of us were thinking is that old-school Angelina (circa “Gia” and “Girl Interrupted”) would have been able to inhabit the role nicely in terms of demeanor and personality…she was always good at characters who are ill-adjusted, closed, and emotionally damaged with out being cliched. The problem with Jolie is that she can scarcely play anything else. Physically-speaking, she’s all wrong, of course.

Like most, I’ve not come across one actress that bowls me over as Lisbeth. Either they are physically wrong or their ability to interpret the role effectively is questionable. Lisbeth is the kind of character that can cut you with a knife just by looking at you and I don’t see many known actresses with that kind of controlled intensity.

The only casting decision that would piss me off to no end would be Natalie Portman. I must be the only one who thinks that she is wooden and incredibily overrated.

Anyway, I just read the first book last week and I LOVED IT. Like everyone, I think that I would be rather upset if they miscast this role. If they don’t cast this role accurately it WILL ruin the movie.

For those of you that are against a HW remake, keep in mind that they have David Fincher at the helm, so it’s not dead in the water, yet. From what I’ve been reading, it seems that Fincher’s favorite so far is Rooney Mara. I’ve only seen in her a couple of interviews and that horrid remake of Nightmare on Elm Street, but I like her. There’s something about her that’s put-upon in a potentially angry way. I can see it.

As a separate comment, I think that the trap that many actresses would fall into while trying to interpret her would be to play her with a trite, effusive emotionalism. Basically like an emo Bella, and what a disservice to the character. Let’s hope that whomever is chosen to play Lisbeth can come better than that and was chosen becuse she CAN come better than that.
