Of course this new, extensive, exhaustive “interview” with George Clooney has the reek of bullsh-t. Of course, that stench could be Elisabetta Canalis. Too much? Eh. Anyway, Clooney allegedly gave this interview to The Sun, and I’m pretty sure some of these quotes are from other interviews Clooney has given in the past few years. Either that of Clooney is just repeating himself endlessly, on a loop. Which isn’t the weirdest thought, honestly. I think Clooney has talking points that he goes to, which means that some of his interviews kind of sound the same. Other stars are like that too. Whatever. I did find some of the stuff interesting, though, and I do think some of it MIGHT be new. The full Sun piece is here, and here are the highlights:
On the circus aspect of celebrity: “It’s much easier for me to hang out with friends at a restaurant in Laglio or a lot of other small villages and towns without 50 photographers showing up in half an hour. My life over there takes me away from the circus aspects of being a celebrity and that’s a pleasant change for me.
On the ease of Italy: “Unfortunately Laglio is turning into a bit of a tourist mecca now and so I have to be a little more careful whenever I’m there – either that, or I should just stand at the entrance to the village handing out tourist brochures. I don’t really worry about that though. Whenever I want, I can always stage a diversion and invite Brad and Angie and their 15 children to come over. Then I can sneak away to the other side of the lake by boat and do whatever I want.”
On his personal life faltering while he concentrated on his career: “I was working so hard on my film projects that for a time I basically didn’t even think very much about how my personal life was evolving. I didn’t care, in the sense that I didn’t have a family or children to look after and that I wasn’t involved in any long-term relationships.”
On buying a home in Laglio (another name for Lake Como): “What changed my life in a very pleasant and unexpected way was buying the villa in Laglio. That was a pure investment decision – I thought maybe I would spend a few weeks vacationing there. But then I realised how beautiful life was in Italy and how it really helped calm me and not feel so pressured. I could also work very productively and bring my friends over to keep me company.”
On Darfur: “I’ve been honoured to be able to lend my celebrity to help wherever I can, especially on behalf of the United Nations. But in the case of Darfur it’s been the greatest failure of my life. With other people, we’ve been able to get a lot of attention focused on the terrible situation there and nothing has changed. It’s very frustrating.”
Learning politics from his old man: “My dad believed there’s a right way to live and a right way to run a government. So he has never shied away from speaking his mind on certain issues and being politically outspoken even if that cost him his job or made his life difficult. So I grew up appreciating the meaning of the notion of integrity and I owe that to my father.”
On not wanting to make blockbusters: “There was so much hype around my being Batman and then I nearly killed the franchise and my career along with it. I also didn’t want to do a lot of easy romantic comedies. I wanted to make films like Three Kings and Out Of Sight because those kinds of films are trying to push the envelope and have a chance to leave some kind of mark.”
Keeping work and pleasure separate: “You have to be willing to work hard to create your own sense of freedom and that’s where the real art of living comes in. I probably have as much fun as anyone but I’m extremely disciplined when it comes to dividing my time between work and play. I don’t even drink as much as I used to because I just can’t stand wasting the next day recovering from a hangover any more.”
On luck versus creativity: “I grew up around famous people. In the world I grew up in – Cincinnati, Ohio – my father was a big star as a TV news anchorman and my Aunt Rosemary was one of the most popular singers in America. But I learnt from how her career sank in the Sixties. I saw how little it has to do with you. It’s all about luck. The problem with famous people in general is that they actually think they’re geniuses. You get famous and you think, ‘Yes, of course I should be famous and I’ve earned it all’. You haven’t, though. You got lucky. I got lucky.”
On his future work plans: “I still feel I haven’t done my best work although I’ve at least put myself in the position where I can keep doing what I love and enjoy the process. That, for me, is what it’s all about. I’ve had a pretty good plan which I’ve been following for the last ten years or so in terms of becoming a director, developing my own projects and taking my work to the next level. I even have a bit of a personal life these days. I don’t want to make anyone sick, but things are going pretty well for me.”
[From The Sun]
Is it bullsh-tty or is it authentic? I don’t know. The last parts, about Darfur and about his future in the industry seem new. And I do think he probably said that bit about “I even have a bit of a personal life these days. I don’t want to make anyone sick, but things are going pretty well for me” sometime in the last week. Because I think Elisabetta is still around, bless her heart. She’s putting in the time and effort, isn’t she? She must be just as kinky as him.
By the way, Rotten Tomatoes has The American at 59%. Not awesome, but not terrible. Roger Ebert liked it (review here), but I started to fall asleep just trying to read what the damn film was about, so my guess is that it’s very dark and slow and you’re supposed to think that it is intense, not boring.
Also: Clooney and Elisabetta were out in West Hollywood last night. I love this photo… Eli always knows where the camera is.

He looks great for 50
I’ve always loved the Cloon, but he loses more of his upper lip every year.
Love this: “You get famous and you think, ‘Yes, of course I should be famous and I’ve earned it all’. You haven’t, though. You got lucky. I got lucky.” There are so many celebs out there who could use a half hour with Clooney to remind them of this piece of wisdom!
Open-toed boots. Ugh.
Bullsh*t.
There are limits to the levels of hypocrisy people are willing to swallow.
You can’t spout his environmental and political views while at the same time living a life of self indulgence and excess on Lake Como, and have rational people keep on buying it.
Integrity. Well that’s a hoot. When he gets lonely he just “brings” his friends over. Could that mean they fly…in airplanes? Classic hypocrite. Do as I say, not as I do. Spend a little time in Darfur, run back to Lake Como, make a movie.
Life is good for this aging, unserious, commitment averse pretty boy.
“I even have a bit of a personal life these days. I don’t want to make anyone sick, but things are going pretty well for me”
This quote is an old one. I read this back around Oscar time.
Sorry, Laglio is not another name for Lake Como, Laglio is the name of the village where he lives. I live about 20 minutes away and have friends who live there and in Cernobbio, the next village. Lago di Como è sempre stato Lago di Como. And that area was a tourist mecca long before he bought his house there. He just happened to buy in the exact stretch near Hotel Villa D’Este which is on the side of the lake where most visitors like to stay when they visit.
Tess-I find myself agreeing with you about the hypocrisy of George talking a good green game and then private jetting all around the world and otherwise living the high, energy consuming life. Always liked George, but I am starting to get bored with his movies and him.
Is this the official kick-off for Hot Guy Friday??
I love how when he talks about Brad and Angie he always say something about their “15” kids. Glad he has a sense of humor about them and since he’s so tight with Brad it makes me think Brad and Angie might actually have a sense of humor too.
She looks like a dude more and more every day……
@TESS, I agree.
I think I have vaguely heard all of the quotes before but I do admire his laziness the man absolutely refuses to promote his movie eventhough its supposedly OK.
@Stronzilla: I just love your nick ;;)
horrible shoes! yikes!
I like Elizabetta. Confident woman. She isn’t looking her best in this photo but she has looked very nice on the red carpet. She must be happy with her no strings attached relationship with Clooney. No woman should stay with him and put their own career on hold unless there’s a nice cash payout at the end….why bother otherwise.
@stronzilla – I find myself jealous of you and also in agreement.

You know, HW superstars’ s*it smells like roses and shines like diamonds, that’s enough to make an ugly place like Lago di Como a tourist destination. LOL
A lot of this must be either bits and pieces from past interviews or he just gives the same pat answers in all of his interviews because they probably ask him the same questions all the time. It’s probably just me but I’ve noticed in the last couple of interviews that he gave he sounds or seems like a man who can’t be alone for any period of time, even some of his relationships were off and on again when he had no one in particular in his life.I will admit I saw The American last night because my hubby wanted to go see it,even though he’s not a GC fan. It has a very 60-70’s feel to it. It is not like the BS trilogy. It’s not a crash cars, burning cars, shoot everyone in sight kind of movie. It is slow in the sense that Clooney is always waiting in anticipation of something to happen,he is the killer who then becomes the target. His character is emotionless because of what he does for a living, he can’t form any relationships or friendships either but he does find some sort of friendship with a priest who makes him question what he does for a living and how it affects his soul/spirit.Everything Clooneys character does in this movies is well thought and planned out(methodical and calculating with a sense of purpose) I read some of the reviews before I went to see this movie so that I knew what I was in for. Like I said it’s not action packed but it was interesting and different,a low key intensity feel to it.Some of the scenery was nice in the movie as well.
Stronzilla It’s nice to have an opinion from someone who lives there and can set a few things straight for us.(well for me anyways)
Sidenote “Laglio has turned into a tourist mecca” surly the mans ego is not so big that he thinks it’s ALL because of him? or does he?
@ tess I agree with you HW is full of”do as I say not as I do” syndrome.
Solveig,
sorry but I can’t agree with what you said:
“You know, HW superstars’ s*it smells like roses and shines like diamonds, that’s enough to make an ugly place like Lago di Como a tourist destination.”
Lake Como is a beautiful area in Italy. You’d love it!
The interview seems a patchwork of old interviews and quote, no doubt there. Had it been new he would have spoken about the American more and about Haiti.
I totally agree that open toe boots are really ugly and Eli looks tired in many pic. Lucky woman, must have been an endless night in bed with GC.
Aqua, thanks for your opinion on the movie. I’m looking forward to it. And yes the scenery is beautiful in Abruzzo. GC showed he cared in a nice way, by filming there he gave work to many people in Abruzzo who had lost a lot because of the earthquake. I live close to this reagion and a friend of mine was cast as a walk-in for the day. She said G was really nice and smiled and waved to everyone asking how they were. He stayed in Sulmona up in the mountain (he was back there in July to film extras) and local papers were full of people saying what a nice man he is.
I highly doubt he sat down with the Rupert Murdoch, right-wing trailer-trash mouth-piece The Sun. If we were talking about The Guardian, The Telegraph or even the Sunday Times (also a Murdoch production), but The Sun? Nah.
uh, he’s gay and she is a former man,
bottom-line.
I still like George.
I don’t know why but this site always say that interviews with tabloids are new and legitimate. Does anybody really believe that Clooney, Julia Robers, Angelina, etc actually gave interviews to The Sun, Star, or In Touch? These “interviews” come from press conferences open to all media or usually with European tabs, completely made up. Some of these quotes are definately old. Is it just me but has Clooney done zero promotion for this movie? I don’t think there was even a movie premier. I remember Clooney saying he’s going to step back from promoting because people know if they will or not see a movie but it’s weird to see so little promotion.
@ Erin
When I typed “Laglio has turned into a tourist mecca” surly the mans ego is not so big that he thinks it’s all about him” I should have included the word Laughing at the end of my sentence. He probably is a very nice man otherwise he would not have made the point of making the movie there. He also has a sense of humor and doesn’t take himself to seriously. I was not trying to be mean.
oh yes, he stopped drinking alcohol and started snorting cocaine with his ugly escort anal-dumb!
she’s so manly and horse-face in every photos! the cokewo.hre has ugly shoes!
she’s again Hollywood disco Milano testimonial and she’s a Mediaset tv (berluconi)girl:

Clooney souldn’t mix with so miserable and low people!
@Erin, ero ironica, I know pretty well how beautiful Lago di Como is (I prefer Lago di Garda, though), I was sarcastically pointing out the fact that in Clooney’s words it seems that Lago di Como became famous just because he lives there.
The lies come out each time, i do not think that he likes angie, i do think he wishes he had the old Brad back. He and angie are a lot worse off as people since they got together. After the excitement wore off, they both settled into trying to make it work and put on a show for the public. All relationships get to the daily grind, they are no different.
