A few days ago, the giant baby known as Wyclef Jean was performing stateside, and he decided to riff on two of his biggest critics, Pras and Sean Penn. Both Pras and Penn had offered surprisingly well-spoken criticisms of Wylcef’s presidential run in Haiti. It didn’t matter in the end, because Clef was ineligible for the presidency because of residency rules, but Clef seems to put some of the blame on his critics. Anyway, during the weekend performance, Clef said/sang: “If I was president….I got a message for Sean Penn, maybe he ain’t see me in Haiti because he was too busy sniffing cocaine. I got a message for Praswell, even though you don’t want to support me, I got love for you, even though you only kicked eight bars in the Fugees.”

Thus far, Pras has not said anything. But Sean Penn’s panties were in a wad, so he got his rep to issue this statement:

“Mr. Jean is clearly unfamiliar with the physical demands put upon volunteers in Haiti. As aid workers there, the notion of depleting the body’s immune system thru the use of illicit drugs is ludicrous. More specifically, J/P Haitian Relief Organization (a.k.a. JPHRO) has a ZERO tolerance policy for any and all illegal drugs. As the leader of this organization, Sean Penn has not only set this policy, but adheres to it. That Mr. Jean would make such a false accusation is reckless and saddening, but not surprising.”

And the rep added, “By the way, Sean’s is bigger than Clef’s.” You know that’s what it’s all about, really. Two boys arguing about whose humanitarian streak is bigger. I really can’t slam Sean for this though – even though I wouldn’t doubt that he’s using again, or that he was a raging cokehead in the past. Penn probably was genuinely pissed at the accusation, though, and he took this opportunity to slam Clef for not even knowing World Health Organization policy.

Sean Penn may be an angry prick (ok, he IS an angry prick) but for Clef to make an accusation like that just sounds like he can’t refute what Penn said about him.

  2. jen says:

    Battle of nitwits.

  3. kate217 says:

on this one i am team sean.

  4. Fluffy Kitten Tail says:

Takes a cokehead to know a cokehead.

  5. Me1st says:

YOYO99 WHY ARE YOU TEAM WYCLEF?

  6. EzE says:

Team Spicoli all the way here.

  7. LOVE ANGELINA says:

Wyclef is gonna lose a lot of his creditability. I really wish he hadn’t responded so childishly to criticism. Wyclef knows people will criticize him but you don’t behave that way by calling names.

  8. hellen says:

Yeah, Sean’s a prick on a personal level, and a drama queen about his hobby of rescuing people in danger – but I gotta support him on this one.

Wyclef’s a dolt and a whiny jerk who has done very little, if anything, to help the people of Haiti. That Yala Haiti thing was a total scam.

  9. Kaboom says:

Considering how many breaks Penn takes from his Haiti visits he could snort up half of Bolivia while on US soil.

  10. di butler says:

Since I am not from Haiti, don’t work for any Haitian charities, I can’t say I know the truth about either ones true involvement. Sean Penn is a jerkified old druggie head, Wyclef sounds like a tit.

  11. aenflex says:

    Team Sean.
ps – you don’t need to live/work in Haiti to become aware of Penn’s involvement – you simply have to read, or watch TV.

  12. cprincess says:

What exactly has Wyclef done for his ‘people’ other than attempt to run for President and set up at dubious charity that is being investigated and was not deemed worthy of receiving Red Cross funds because of accounting irregularities…
Yeah Sean Penn is an angry dick (a great actor though) but at least this angry dick is doing something practical to help the Haitians-I havent seen Wyclef down there working in one of the camps so he needs to shut up…

  13. NayNay says:

Wow, Wyclef is acting like a little p*ssy.

  14. BethL says:

Does anybody even care about these people? It seems like this is getting a lot more attention than it should.

  15. Jo says:

When w. jEAN WAS ON oPRAH HE MAD SEVERAL COMMENTS AGAINST us EFFORTS TO HELP ACCUSING US OF THROWING THE FOOD DOWN LIKE THE SURVIVORS WERE ANIMALS.. hE IS A JERK AND MADE IT ALL ABOUT RACE ETC.. Althoug I am not a big fan of the other jerk

  16. lucy2 says:

If that was Jean’s attempt to answer criticism, it came off poorly, and very childish. If you want to be taken seriously, you have to act like an adult.

I think Penn is probably a miserable jerk, but he is there doing something, and I don’t blame his team for issuing this response. Plus it only makes Jean’s comments look worse.

These guys need to remember that they’re on the same team, trying to help the people of Haiti, right? Leave your egos at home, boys.

  17. k says:

Ah, but the notion of depleting the body’s immune system thru the use of nicotine is perfectly OK.

Aside from this hypocracy, I’m team Penn — just for his heartfelt efforts in Haiti. In non-Haiti life, I’m team Wright.

  18. Lee says:

With his whining, Jean has underlined the very real misgivings people had about his suitability to rule. Thank goodness he was ruled out by residency requirements. Perhaps if he truly wants to help Haiti he should keep his boots on the ground there, and his money and his words where it will help and leave aside the “poor me” histrionics.

  19. Kelly says:

IMO, Sean Penn is an egomaniac who can’t keep his mouth shut if the world isn’t revolving around him. He comes across as an ass and control freak. He had no right to criticize Wyclef on larry King, no matter what tone it was.

  20. Kelly says:

I’d also like to add that a true humanitarian, one without ego, wouldn’t need to criticize another. Sean has a long way to go.

  21. original kate says:

they both need a good slap upside the head. what a couple of twats.

  22. Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

What he means is, ‘If I WERE President’. One who is well-versed in the intricacies of the subjunctive is able to divert a bit of the attention away from the fact that he is an egg-brained fool.

It’s time to put a bullet in this ‘Old Yele’ donnybrook.

  23. kim says:

Kind of love Wyclef for calling Sean out. Sean is a total cokehead!

  24. CaramelKiss says:

“Don’t throw stones, if you live in a glass house.” Wyclef himself has had some questionable actions with his non-profit organization and still hasn’t really cleared up how he spent disaster relief money for personal reasons. IMO he’s not in any position to bring Haiti out of their suffering and he comes across as a politician on the take, it’s not far fetched to see him taking bribes. Seriously Grimy.

  25. Sasha says:

    Team Sean!!!!!!! a million times

  26. anoneemouse says:

That would explain the anger issues he has…

  27. WTF? says:

I think they both need a big steaming cup of STFU.

  28. Ron says:

You have to give Sean props for really getting in there, doing the real work and helping these people. And not just being there for a photo op. Regardless, Jean should be happy that someone is advocating for the people of Haiti and leave the name calling for children.

  29. Amanda says:

I have been keeping up with the Wyclef Jean stories, and I’m really surprised that no one has mentioned Wyclef’s connection to gangs in Haiti. Has anyone seen the documentary Ghosts of Cite Soleil? He basically lays out his gang connections.

  30. jzhz says:

    Team Haiti. F these losers.

  31. Justina R. says:

Kaiser, I think it’s interesting that you’re on Sean Penn’s (who beat Madonna and while being a crackhead) side, but you never put up a story about the Death Threats Wyclef was receiving when he announced he was going to run. I bet it was Sean Penn doing those death threats.

  32. Chris says:

Penn has never been a coke or crack head and repeating it over and over again doesn’t make it so to anyone who matters. Loved him in Bad Boys.

  33. poopie says:

Sean Penn is a worthless P.O.S.
No talent, fugly excuse for a human being. i’d almost rather read about the LOHANS and that’s SCARY

  34. normade says:

There is a time and place for everything…I doubt he’s doing coke and relief work at the same time. Coke is for Hollywood and Cannes.

  35. xxodettexx says:

[a little late to the commenting partay!]

team penn on this one… penn may be a douchy jerk, but he is pretty honest about working charity with his body and money, and not just his mouth… *coughcoughwyclefcoughcough*
