Aaron Johnson & John Slattery are the perfect sandwich in VMAN

Ooh, Aaron Johnson is getting a lot of play today, isn’t he? VMAN Magazine just sent us the new issue – “The Age Issue”. Two of the people they profile are Aaron and Mad Men’s resident silver fox, my beloved John Slattery. Both Aaron and John do it for me, and now I’m picturing a little silver-and-teenage sandwich. Without apologies…sigh.

VMAN seems to be making a lot of the fact that Aaron – now 20 years old – is with a 43-year-old woman (Sam Taylor Wood) and that she just had his baby. They call the piece “Family Man: Barely Out Of His Teens, Actor Aaron Johnson Is A Father And A Fiance. And He’s Just Getting Started.” He is photographed by Hedi Slimane. I think this might be one of the rare times that an actor is better in motion than in still photography – I’ve looked at lots of photos of Aaron, and he never really did it for me. It was only when I saw Kick-Ass that I began to get it. First of all, Aaron has one of those great, lanky, broad-shouldered bodies. Secondly, he’s really, really talented as an actor. Third, he’s just hot. Hot in motion.

Now, for Slattery. My mom is amazed with my love for Slattery, and for Roger Sterling, his character on Mad Men. Roger isn’t just comic relief to me – I get his pathos, his dark side, and I get that he’s actually a better businessman than anyone thinks, and that he’s a lot sweeter and more sentimental than people think. As for Slattery in real life… well, he just sounds like a cool guy. Boston Irish, a surfer, married forever to George Clooney’s ex-wife, Talia Balsam. In other words, he’s a cool cat. LOVE.

It’s great to see Slattery on Mad Men getting recognized, because he’s one of those actors that has been around doing small roles (and doing them well) for years. It’s hard not to feel like he deserves his current success.

Anyone remember him on Sex and the City? Ahh, good times.

I totally remember him on SATC! He is a great actor, but I don’t find him particularly attractive (but he does look great in those suits). A little to wizened for me. The other one is just so…young.

For me, Slattery will always be the guy who wanted to pee on Carrie Bradshaw. Always.

I like him on Mad Men, but I always have that “mental image” on.

  4. A.K.A. says:

Didn’t he want Carrie to pee on him? I don’t remember which way it was but it was funny ! 😀

Didn’t he also play the same kind of character in Desperate Housewives with Gabrielle Solis?

That suit he’s wearing in that black & white pic give the impression he has major dandruff issues! 😀

  5. Mistral says:

Agree that Slattery is hot. The young one’s a cutie…his situation creeps me out, though.

It’s not a slight against character actors in the least, as they’re often just as charismatic and very, very often far more talented and versatile than certified ‘stars’. Not that versatility is everything, Cary Grant definitely played to a type, but it’s one to whom I always stick if I chance upon one of his films. However, something about John Slattery never seemed to fit into the regular ‘character actor’ mould. I don’t know, his presence on the small screen seemed to knock everyone else out of frame, so I think his association with this kind of character who has a kind of slinky ‘largeness’ about him strikes me as a good fit. Everyone becomes tripped up over Jon Hamm (deserved, I’d say, as it would take an almost supernatural talent to bring pathos and attractive qualities to a character who is pretty much a con-artist shitheel lush), and Christina Hendricks who–whatever, body type aside, I just can’t be bothered when stripping at any opportunity bestows you with the ‘best feminist ever’ title. I think he’s great on that show, now, more love for Robert Morse and Season 4’s breakout, Jared Harris.

Aaron Johnson has a porcelain quality to him. I’m always thinking that he belongs under a willow tree with a lute and ruff cranking out John Dowland’s greatest hits. ‘A penny for your sorrows, and I shall weepeth from the stings of thine barbs, cruel mistress mine’ and so forth.
